    Love your level of detail in the video that covers the 8 things to look out for before sharpening with the Xarilk Gen3! I am just getting around to stepping up my sharpening game and appreciate your honesty and thoroughness - I'm convinced that for my use - my kitchen knives - the Gen3 will be perfect. During my research I came across another youtuber, Neeves Knives. When doing his video on the Xarilk Gen3 vs the Kadet Pro he found that the knife clamps for the TSProf Kadet/KadetPro fit the Xarilk Gen 3. He also reported that by putting the two clamps on the Xarilk on one side can result in a different angle when you flip it to sharpen the other side, and that using the TSProf Single Clamp may be a better solution if doing lots of small knives. He also suggests adding a pair of TSProf rod stops to limit the travel of the sharpening rod. Placing one between the pivot bearing and the stone will reduce the chance of injury, though not likely with the Xarilk guard, and placing the other stop on the other side of the pivot bearing minimizes the assembly from scratching the knife.

    This is a cool sharpener, but seems complicated and more appropriate for an engineer (such as you🙂). There is no doubt that it can do a great job in the right hands. For me, not an engineer, my Work Sharp Precision Adjust, even without modifications, does a really nice job. It is fun to use, and has minimal frustrations. It probably has a lot to do with edge requirements and specifications needed by the user. Thanks for showing this to us. I never fail to learn something.

    I've found on my diamond plate stones that even though you don't have to wet the stone I find it helps prolong the life to moisten the surface with water and a little dish soap which provides enough lubrication to keep the diamonds from breaking off the metal plate
    My stone progression if the bevel has already been set is 600, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000 followed by fine and extra fine ceramic and then onto two strops with 3 micron and o.5 micron diamond emulsion. If a reprofile is needed I start with a 180 and 240 grit and then the others. I've found that using more stone equalizes the wear on all the stones.

    Yeah I agree the finger guard rolling around is annoying. It needs to be removed le as imo it doesn't need to be there. They should include two travel stops so that newbis can't fall off the stone or push in to far and cut them selves. I communicated with them when they sent me a text unit telling them to include included two travel stops, I don't know if they are going to include one in their next revision or not but it would really help the system overall and make that annoying finger guard no longer of need.

    • @wayneanderson991

      Get your self a couple of split ring drill stop collars and a couple of light short springs that fit the rod, that will solve the issue of falling off the stone. The spring will cushion the over travel stop you have set. Maybe future generations of this sharpener will include such items but if not it is easy to remedy on your own. The reason I suggest the split ring collar is to avoid a set screw mark on the smooth rod finish.

    Nice over view of the Xarilk gen 3 sharpener. I have a wicked edge system and am currently looking for an additional fixed angle sharpener. The Xarilk and the Ketiped professional knife sharpener have my attention at the moment, both of these seem to offer good value and functionality. I did find some inexpensive diamond stones on amazon that look promising for use on these fixed angle sharpeners, it's the10pcs Diamond Knife Sharpening Stones sets with aluminum backed diamond plates Kit for RUIXIN PRO RX008. This stone set has an aluminum backing plate instead of plastic and offers a nice mix of abrasive grits. When the abrasive wears out you could replace the diamond plate with say a piece of leather to make your own strop, or mount a piece of balsa wood as stropping material etc. The Xarilk has a stone compensation feature so different media thicknesses is not an issue for maintaining the correct angles. To deal with the Xarilk brand plastic stone backing flexing, I would think you could find a weaker spring at the local hardware store that would be more appropriate in spring tension for the provided stones in the Xarilk system. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series, Thanks!

      Wayne, serious question: if you have a wicked edge what is the purpose of another fixed angle sharpener?

    • @wayneanderson991
      @wayneanderson991 Місяць тому

      @@MrBearbait75 I don't like having to purchase proprietary stones when they wear out for one. Next is the ability of the Xarilk style systems to handle longer blades with better support at the tip, especially thin blades. And because the stones for the Xarilk type sharpeners are wider you have more control of the stone when approaching the tip to avoid rounded tip issues. This takes greater care with the wicked edge system IMHO. The Ketiped system would allow easier sharpening of long serrated bread knives and similar type blades because the elevation head can travel along the length of a blade giving you strait access to each individual serration. I like to sharpen things for my self, family and friends. I have a shop full of sharpening equipment. This is just one of many hobbies I have. Hope that answers your question.

    When needed, I'll go over the plates with a soft eraser to clean out in-between the diamonds. I don't think it looses any. They shouldn't & if they do, then those free-range diamonds aren't damaging my edge.

    14:50 I like use the ceramic from the Worksharp, freehand to help remove stubborn burrs along the edge or just a specific spot, or a ceramic honing rod.
    18:45 That sound, the feedback I can feel from here lol. GET THAT BURR! 🥵
    17:14 that has happened to me a couple times where the bevel was uneven because I had the blade set in the clamps unevenly, tilted up or down, whichever it was it doesn't matter in the grand scope of things, it was off, ever so slightly. The spine design is something to look at when clamping.
    Ooopsy 21:58 I was looking away when I heard you say you tightened it up to 27-1/2 ft/lbs. Foot pounds, on this thing? Nevahhh 🤣. We know you meant to say 2.3 ft/lbs 😉.

    like this needs more 😅 I loved the close ups. I'd like to see what stroke pattern you use. Some people say to go in one fail swoop, others straight back n forth & some like making small 'loops' where you grind forward & come back straight, rinse & repeat.
