    I'm young, and I love this. I find that most things designed for people with accessibility issues seem to actually be great for people without them, haha. As someone who has a million "moving parts" to deal with at work and people constantly "changing the channel" on my brain, I find this incredibly useful even as a healthy-minded 37 year old without short-term memory problems. I work in IT support for a fairly big school district, and there is a lot of "paperwork" involved in filling out digital reports later on about many things I came across when solving issues or need to do later on when re-visiting a problem, inventory changes, etc.
    Instead of opening my phone, finding a note app, pushing the icon, choosing the right folder or category, pressing write new note, typing things I need to say, pressing the option to add a new photo, etc., I can now do things EXACTLY as quickly as I need to and move on without losing my train of thought or screeching to an absolute halt. I like that it automatically categorizes it for you by tagging it so I can specifically focus only on these notes. The nature of my job is also having clients not exactly being very socially aware outside of themselves and hounding me to solve their problems while I'm clearly busy helping someone else, so this truly helps me stay on-task. Such an excellent discovery! As much as I know about multiple operating systems, I never play around in "shortcuts" too much. It's great this was brought to my attention, thanks!

    I am very old and very slow. And as you moved through your instructions, various links you directed us to press did not seem to exist on my iOS 17.2.1. I had to experiment. I repeated short chunks until I stopped floundering. Near the end I created the “Remember This” folder, having created a test note with several test entries. After creating the Remember folder nothing would appear there. Finally I deleted my test note with its entries. The new Remember This folder worked perfectly. Ah sweet success. I’m leaving you now for a well deserved nap.

    Thought I’d got this, loaded a small BLACK APP WITH A WHITE HAND, All that did was allow names, addresses but, no note! I left it onscreen, went back to this video, got things done step by step and GOT IT! It collected all my other notes and that is exactly what I wanted.
    I have misplaced lots of things by not remembering what I did with them, wires, medications, books etc., but now I religiously make a note!
    I was 40 when I first used a computer, I used to help others but now, at 80, a lot of my knowledge has left home! Thanks for your advice, it is much appreciated!👍🤝

    Thanks heaps Rich for explaining “ remember this “ its gold. I had a stroke a few years ago and im slowly coming right . remember this helps me remember stuff. If i want to remember something for later on i quickly put it in remember me . I go through my list every day and tick things off. It helps me to keep up with others. Thanks again Rich . My only advise , im pretty good with IT , and it can be a bit tricky. If you struggle setting it up get help. It is so worth it 😊

    Super useful shortcut. I’m 68 and just found your channel thanks to the UA-cam algorithm. I’ve watched a few already. Thanks for your style of presentation and the topics you chose. I find that tech is changing so fast it is hard to keep up and what you offer are excellent ways to try and keep up with the times. Even much younger people than myself struggle with the pace of change. I find that out, by asking them questions and realizing that often they know less than me about how the OS works and how to use it to make life easier. Many younger people i talk to seem to have adopted the attitude of technology is bad so they only reluctantly learn what they have too while hating the experience. My experience is technology has made my life amazingly easier and continues to do so although there is much of it i have to sort through to find what really works for me. You’re helping in a big way with that, so thanks.

      He left out the most important component - use Siri to by-pass all the steps! Just say “Siri, remember this” and she will ask what you want to remember. You tell her whatever it is. Then she’ll ask if you want to attach a photo. If you say “no,” that’s it. No more steps.

  • @NichaelCramer
    @NichaelCramer 4 місяці тому

    Thanks for pointing to this, but one possible heads-up concerning the setup and the order it’s done in.
    That is:
    1] I loaded the Remember This shortcut, and added a couple test entries. These were put into a new “What Happened Today” file in Notes, as expected.
    2] I then went in and created a new “Remember This” folder in Notes.
    3] I then went in to edit the shortcut to point to the new “Remember This” folder.
    The problem is that it seemed to remember the old, original “What Happened Today” file.
    That is, new entries went into the old “What Happened Today” file, and nothing was put into the new “Remember This” folder.
    My quick fix was to delete the original “What Happened Today” file. After that, everything worked as expected.

    One other thing I discovered - the shortcut will not allow smart folders as options when you go to select a folder in the shortcut edit menu.. That’s weird, but it has to be a regular folder. Took me a while to figure out why I couldn’t see the Remember This smart folder I had just created - I created a regular folder instead and that one showed up in the drop down list in the shortcut.

    Problem! I’ve been using this shortcut on all my Apple devices (Mac & IOS) and it had been working flawlessly. I updated to iOS 17.2 yesterday and the shortcut stopped working “Couldn’t communicate with a helper application” (I believe something to do with ICloud access…) at that point my Mac version still worked. I then updated to MacOS 14.2 and guess what!? The Mac version died also. I couldn’t think of another way to tell you this… I did subscribe and I love your videos…

      @@dickburger4084 As far as I can tell the problem can only be fixed by two entities; Apple Computer Co, to counter whatever changes they’ve made to both OSs, or the person who put the Remember This shortcut together…. I am neither of those. There are no settings I can change that I am aware of that will fix this problem which I do not completely understand because I’m not a computer programmer…. I won’t change anything on my system. I’ll just use other software. If in a while, the problem is solved, I’ll go back to “Remember This”.

    Rich, thanks again for your helpful videos. I have a question. I recently got my first iPhone after being an Android user for many years. I used Gmail all that time. After migrating to IOS, I find that all of my Gmail folders are listed underneath my Apple mail folders. I just noticed this morning that when I "archive" an email, it is going into my "Important" folder. I'm just confused as to how I can integrate all of the old Gmail into Apple mail. Is there a way to do this? Is it advisable? I don't like having two email systems in there. Perhaps you might make a video about this. In any case, thanks so much for your helpful videos.

      I'm not sure what's happening. Did you alter the shortcut to go into a specific folder as shown at the end of the video? If not, then the "Remember This" not will just be in your general Notes section. Look to see if it's there. Hope this helps...

      @@RichBowlin I deleted everything and started over twice. So the second time, after I created the new folder in notes, and then went back into the shortcut to " create note with text in remember this folder" it still didn't work, so I went back into notes and MANUALLY MOVED the "what happened today" note ---into the Remember this folder. Now when I added entries, it's there (at least for today). I'll see what happens tomorrow. Thanks for replying, much appreciated.

  • @DanEdwards
    @DanEdwards 8 місяців тому

    I have found what is happening to people who the shortcut is not creating new notes in the “Remember This” folder in notes. I was following along with you in the demonstration. The Remember This shortcut finds the note to update based on the name of note regardless of where it is located. Because there is a note created with a matching name in a different folder it updates that note. So this behavior will fix itself the next day, or you can just delete note and when it creates a new note it will be in the correct folder.

    What I find to be more helpful and much quicker is to keep a note called “Brain Dump“ in the Notes app. I jot down all the things that I need to remember to do. I select the checklist format so I can check off each task completed. Done!
    You get to choose whether you want to keep completed tasks or delete them.

    Hi Rich, another great video - thanks. I've tried to make the note go into the right folder as you describe by setting the app to send it to Remember This but it will not. I've tried sending it to another new folder I created but no luck. The notes appear in my Notes but just under the general latest note. Have I done something wrong or do you have any ideas? Many thanks, Kerry

      Hi Kerry. Not sure what's going on. I tested this method on a couple of devices before making the video to make sure I had things down correctly. If your note continues to go into the general notes area my guess is that somehow the folder you chose in the Shortcut just didn't save when you closed it. Not sure if this is much help...

      I discovered that you can’t use a smart folder - it has to be a regular folder. Go in to Notes and see if the icon for your Remember This folder is a pic of a folder, or if it looks like a gear wheel. If it is a gear wheel, it is a smart folder and won’t work with the shortcut. You’ll need to create a new folder and make sure you don’t check “make a smart folder.” The other possibility is that you accidentally made your folder a sub-folder in a Notes folder, rather than having it be on the dame hierarchy level as Notes. You can drag the folder to the left until it shows in the same level. Hope this helps!

    I’ve really enjoyed and benefitted from your channel. But this video was a strain to implement. iOS 16.5.1, iPhone Xr. Nothing opened in “Remember This” until I moved the “What happened …” note into that folder. The small icon does not show the keyboard until the Text Box is tapped. That is not the case when installed as a Shortcut - it works as you demonstrate. A shortcut to open Notes’ “Remember This” folder was good to learn, but if you want to use any other note, the Notes app icon defaults to opening “Remember This”, so I’m not sure how useful it will be.
    Some of my difficulty following this video was because I don’t care for Widgets’ battery consumption, so I’ve avoided using them. I’d forgotten how to use Widgets, so I had to look up some basics I didn’t get here. Until I know the “Remember This” Widget will not consume additional battery, I’ll live with the extra tap to get the keyboard and skip the Notes Widget to continue using Notes as I have.
    In spite of the aggravation, I’m glad you demonstrated its usefulness. I’ve been adding dates and times manually to a daily log note, and I expect this to be a much better solution. Thank you.

      An apt analysis for many people. I practiced putting this all together before I ever turned on the camera. I eliminated some things that were confusing and thought I had something good. But a lot of people have struggled with one thing or another. And I've done my best to try to help via these comments, but it's hard to do so without their iPhone or iPad in my hand. Thanks for your patience and understanding. This video held a lot of promise but I think it fell flat on my execution. I'm really bummed over the whole thing. I hope to do better next time.
