Alternative Tools and Fuels On The Homestead | Firewood Production

  • In this video, we dive into alternative ways to heat your home, focusing on the traditional method of firewood. I’ll walk you through the process of firewood production, from cutting and splitting to stacking and drying it for optimal use. We’ll also cover essential chainsaw maintenance tips to keep your equipment in top shape. But I’ll share why I prefer using hand tools, such as axes and saws, over power tools when possible, and how these tools offer a more sustainable, skill-based approach to heating your home. A lot of the victims of Hurricane Helene are going to have to be creative with their heat sources. We’ve already been addressing that and some of the areas that we’ve been. There is a very generous donor that bought a lot of wood burning stoves for people. We’ll help them cut the firewood since there’s a lot of it to cut

I'm 51 I heat with wood and a splitting maul is faster than a splitter and you have the satisfaction of being a man. It's very nice standing back looking at your house knowing your family is warm and you made sure with your own hands.

as a carpenter, i love my power tools, but i tell you what, my hand tools are what i reach for if they are the tool for the job. a good hand saw, a hammer and chisel can do what sometimes the power tools can not. great video, and reminder. nothing wrong with working hard. working smart pays off too.

I live in upstate South Carolina. We had several trees fall around the property from Helene.
We also lost power & relied on our generator for several days. As a result I bought myself a pneumatic log splitter that is hand driven. That way I can split wood easier without depending on electricity or gasoline/fuel.
I still have my splitting maul on standby though.

You are correct on small engine. Fuel, air and spark. But if you don't have good compression with the piston it won't work.
I have found with small two strokes, choke it, pull until it tries to fire and then put it on half choke and start it. Then turn choke off and warm it up.

I used to love boating, have a few and one big sail boat. Haven't seen it in 2 years. I've been constantly working on our small farm. Planting trees growing food working on the 130 some year old house. All so my kids and wife will be comfortably as i can make their home through the coming struggle. Hopefully after the chaos I'll see my boat again and not have the concerns i do now

Note to selves: Start up the small gas engines, 1 x per month, to check engine run. Have a couple of older meat grinders and coffee grinders. Keep em clean and oiled. Great video.

24:46 that is the point I wish everyone would understand- 1. Do not ask if I need help, if you WANT to help you Will.
    2. Don’t just walk by or stand there, help or disrespectfully keep walking 😂 trying the best of me to get my boys to understand that. I will get it done but don’t waste time asking if I need help. You either see it and act or you don’t. Great job of letting your son know why.

You are correct in that every day you will have things to do at the house in this lifestyle. All I have to do is look around and pick what I feel is priority or what job I have the materials there at hand to do without running to the store LOL. When I do go to the store I will buy 3 of what I need also. Great truth in and fun with the kids in the video Jason, I enjoyed the time.

I have a suggestion for you. Harbor Freight sells a hydraulic wood splitter for around 110 dollars. It's manually operated so it runs on people power. Perfect for getting the kids involved.

Always work the edge of the big rounds to start. Been heating with wood since i was 14, 42 years ago in my moms garage. Also, cordwood saws (pto driven) can be retro fitted to a 35-40" Simons removable tooth round blade on run off diesel tractor instead of the crappy steel toothed blades. 😊

Im 70 now and can still bust wood with a maul, I still have a gas wood splitter but use my maul some also, lift weights to keep toned and it helps quite a bit at my age. I use wood to heat the house all winter in NW NC, nothing like a good wood heater, no matter how cold it gets.

I can commiserate with your wife. I get seasick listening to waves too.. Motion sickness has plagued me my whole life.
I'm a 66 yo female, live east of Atlanta, GA, and am going into my 12th year of heating my home with a woodstove. I've got a furnace, but I love the feel of the heat from the stove. The furnace is set to 60 so that if the fire goes out or the stove can't keep up with the cold (small stove, bigger house), it kicks on. My electric bill has been substantially lower because of the stove. I originally bought it as more of a backup, but now it's the main heat source.
Until a few years ago, I split most of my own firewood from free rounds gotten off of FB Marketplace or neighbors or dead trees on my property. I have a 5 ton electric splitter (Earthquake) that has been a workhorse for me. I've also got a splitting maul and a smaller axe. I like using the small axe, but the handle breaks too easily (I'm terrible with aim, lol). Because I didn't have the strength in the swing, the maul was better because it was heavier.
I now buy my firewood from a man who lives next door to the tree guy I use. VERY reasonable prices and it still saves money in the long run to heat with wood vs heat pump. I still have to split the odd piece because it's too big for my stove and I enjoy doing it. All of my firewood, for this year, was bought and stacked by the end of June. Always be prepared... age and gender don't matter...

One main help with two stroke motors. Allow the motor to run out of fuel at the end of the year (if applicable) which stops the carburetor from "gumming-up". That one minor maintenance technique has saved me "bookoos" of headaches.

A quick tip for anyone this applies to, you can get makita chainsaws or circ saws in kit deals with 4, 5ah batteries and dual fast chargers, which basically costs the price of the batteries alone and this is 2024, I use my makita to saw mesquite 10-12 inches thick like butter, you still need bar n chain oil but that’s it, the batteries charge in less than an hr and you’ll have 2 sets for the 36 volt, don’t hesitate on these electric chainsaws guys unless you have a good reason, of course this message is directed at anyone who needs tools and is trying to pick a good brand to get in to and get some batteries going for continuous heavy work
Edit- I just checked the price and it’s much more expensive now to get this kit, damn lol maybe they’ll go on sale

Spark pull gap can not really change on its own, other than lots and lots of run time.
If it ran when you last used it, 95% of the time it is simply gas issues.

I have LOADS of those saws. You can occasionally find one ready to go. When that happens there is usually a second of the smaller size with the standard bench saw handle on one end. Usually wrapped in oiled cardboard or something similar ...
