In the spirit of How to Kill, Slash Course will take a look at some of the strangest entries in long running series on our new show Franchise Killers, beginning with Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. Freddy Krueger is in the upper echelon of the slasher stable, but as is true for most horror series, A Nightmare on Elm Street has endured varying degrees of quality throughout its tenure. From the original Nightmare on Elm Street by Wes Craven, to the peak of the series Dream Warriors, every subsequent sequel seemed to bring the evolution of Freddy Krueger to a crawl.
Robert Englund still brings the best Freddy kills, but as the dream deaths piled up, the series began to slow down, and soon Freddy was put on the bench for nine whole years. Wes Craven’s New Nightmare was the final entry in the classic Freddy franchise, and it marks a drastic step in Freddy Krueger evolution. The film depicts Freddy as a demon shaped by stories, in a post-modern look at the power of mythmaking. Unfortunately, as a slasher film, the kill count leaves a lot to be desired. Did New Nightmare lead directly to the Freddy Krueger death? You’ll have to watch and find out how we explained in the video, but if the history of Freddy Krueger has shown us anything, we can only dream of a world without Freddy.

Freddy's Dead film killed the franchise, critically and storywise.

Well, it's literally the title of the movie..
I would argue 4 was the beginning of the end for the franchise and 6 was just a product of 4 and 5. 4 took the comedic Freddy from 3 and just ran with it.
Freddy's Dead was one of the worst Nightmare's and the same could be said for the Dream Child before it as they were just doing anything to put a movie out as fast as possible to keep the money rolling in. It's good they at least didn't send Freddy into space like they did with Jason. Still I remember being in Middle School when Freddy's Dead came out and going and even as I kid being like man this film really stinks.
I loved New Nightmare so much I saw it like 3 times in the local small theater when it first came out. I used to have the paperback book, magazine and had two different versions of the poster (the theater one and the video store one) but sadly they're long sense gone.
I felt like new nightmare was good and a lot scarier than the one before it

100% disagree with this video. New Nightmare was a great film. loved seeing Heather slowly realize that it was actually freddy that was after her. Freddys dead killed the franchise. thats probably why this one is so different. stop smoking crack lol

It was a tiny bit scary when I watched it when I was a kid but it sucks now I like the first nightmare on elm St now that movie gave me nightmares for years when I was growing up

Nathan Isaksson seriously, they need a new writer...definitely a precursor to Scream which you can argue was the sole savior for slashers to keep going mid 90’s and beyond

Yeah, but I found some fans that arguing that new nightmare wasnt like "nightmare" and its box office says it otherwise. Fans didnt get the metafictional aspect because they expect the freddy they last knew. And the meta was too much on it, even I only see some parts of it, it doesn't have many suspension of disbelief, only few, way few. an element you would get on a meta film.
I totally disagree. New Nightmare is easily the best film in the franchise. Wes Craven's directorial craft had finally caught up to his ideas, and the movie wasn't burdened with countless one-liners.
Exactly. The franchise was basically a joke at that point; New Nightmare was an attempt to get it back on course, recontextualize it, & make it scary again. Which I think it was successful at.
@Mooky Blaylock Yes, best. The first film is poorly-acted and frequently shows off its inadequate budget (typical of early Wes Craven films). The second one is interesting thematically, but it reduces the premise to yet another possession story. The third film is the first to be well-executed, but it slowly makes Freddy less and less intimidating as it approaches the final act.
The fourth film is an incoherent music video posing as a film. The fifth film has some fascinating but underdeveloped subtext hidden beneath Englund's scenery chewing. The sixth film is convoluted and tonally inconsistent. Freddy vs. Jason is stupid. The remake is a sleeping pill. That leaves New Nightmare as the clear winner. It's actually scary, unlike any of the films after the third. It's actually technically competent, unlike the first two films. Its only real competition is Dream Warriors, but New Nightmare is easily the smarter of the two movies.

If it's not a slasher film, then neither are most of the films that regularly top the list of the most critically-acclaimed slasher films of all time. If we're talking about blood, then New Nightmare is bloodier than Black Christmas, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Halloween combined.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare is one of my favorite horror movies.
The franchise was already dead; New Nightmare just recontextualized it. *shrug* I saw it in the theater, & really liked it. It's my 2nd favorite, after #1.
Elm steet 1, 3, and New Nightmare are literally the only ones worth being in the series.

Ironically, Freddy's Dead was the thing that killed the franchise (I was always a big fan of New Nightmare, I thought it kinda revitalized Freddy interest despite never getting a direct sequel)

@Crado Dragmire Yes, part 3 most certainly set up the one-liners, the comedy, the celebrity cameos and the jarring 80's hair metal. No doubt about it. But even so, part 3 plays it remarkably straight as a horror movie.

I am pretty sure they haven't seen Final Destination 5. It's one of the best in the series, and it easily had the best ending of all of them.

I was lucky enough to see Freddy vs. Jason in theaters. It's my favorite Freddy/Jason movie. The final battle is so badass.

I disagree on the Ash/Freddy comparison. Ash started out as a generic final boy and grows to be a lovable, hilarious, and badass character throughout the series. Freddy on the other hand started out as a terrifying menace and became a laughing stock as the series progressed. Having Ash go back to the way he was in the original ED wouldn’t feel right, but having Freddy go back to his darker, more menacing roots is much needed.
Freddy’s Dead definitely killed this franchise in my opinion by a LONG SHOT lol. New Nightmare was simply ahead of its time.

They weren't technically off screen since Heather dreamt them and later on in the news they said they were found slashed to death with how she dreamt that they died

Ok , "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" wasn't out to save the Elm Street franchise, but I heard it was a "test run" for Wes to test the postmodern, metaphyiscal elements he perfected in "Scream" which if we remember, only came out 2 years later

I would say that 4-6 essentially almost killed the franchise, while New Nightmare basically saved it from falling into obscurity

Currently watching this film and its really the precursor for "Scream". The phone calls are creepy AS hell. This movie has that feel that everybody is a fast talking, in on the joke but the main character feel. Nancy feels like Sidney in this. This movie is really good. Seeing Freddy on the talk show is like the pinnacle of his character because he became comedic over the years so why not acknowledge the greatness then take him somewhere else that people wouldn't expect. The people in the stands dressed like him made it apparent on the talk show.. The real new nightmare is "Scream" cause that's what this movie conveys.. all the formulas of horror.

i loved New Nightmare. The tone was so dark,. It was more than a slasher movie. It was almost a cosmic and existential horror story. The idea of story telling trapping true terror is dope. (this movie fits so well with in the Mouth of Madness)
New Nightmare I feel wasn't and still isn't apart of the main series. I look at it as a standalone, and I feel it's the best one.

This is actually my favorite in the series. It really wonderfully pulls back the story in a way that most others fail to. The films turned into pure camp and a parody of themselves. Instead of the normal tactic of a dark and gritty reboot they rolled with the idea that self parody is inevitable and turned it into a meta commentary on the system itself. For a slasher series it is much more high concept. Love it..

If they were ever to re cast Freddy Krueger, I would either pick Willem Dafoe or Joaquin Phoenix.
Kevin Bacon is cool and all but I don’t really see him as Freddy.
I thought Jackie Earl Haley did a good job wirh what he had. My biggest issue with it was just how boring the script was and how unimaginative the kills were.

New Nightmare was terrific! Other than one or two minor nitpicks, my only real issue with the film is the finale. Yes, it's a cool setting, and the reading the screenplay while trying to avoid Freddy was clever, but I found most of it to ring a little false and corny compared to the majority of the film. I think I would have preferred a less stylish setting for the finale, and less of the goofy Freddy. He was mean for sure, but at the end he became a little silly for my liking. I understand why Wes made it this way, but it kind of brought the film down a notch.
Still easily one of the best in the series, and at times my personal favorite.

This is one if my favorites, so inavative, and "NEW"!!! Nightmare, 1, 2, 3, and New Nightmare are my favorite of the franchise. This did not sink the franchise, IMO...by no means. Freddy's Dead sunk the franchise, New Nightmare gave it "LIFE". Can't wait for Cecil's New Nightmare fan film...Dylan's New Nightmare. Please support it, it is for the fans Baby.!!!!!
If you go back and rewatch them, you’ll realize that New Nightmare is probably top 3 in the nightmare franchise. After 1 and 3 of course.

I think the problem was that Freddy got more and more campy as the movies went on, so that it seemed like New Nightmare seemed an over correction. You're right though, having Freddy be a molester in the reboot rather than just a murderer made him feel gross rather than horrifying.

New Nightmare is the best. And when you really delve into what Wes was getting at, you love it even more. My favorite!
The first 3 Nightmare movies were great. Next two went downhill, still watchable. Freddy’s Dead was worst movie. Then Freddy vs Jason is a stand-alone fun movie for Freddy and Hason. But New Nightmare is a masterpiece because it is a unique premise and more of a psychological horror than previous movies. New Nightmare didn’t kill the franchise, Freddy’s Dead did.( the 2010 remake making Freddy an actual child molestor was a bad idea).
Nightmare on elm street 4 was financially successful , highest grossing of the franchise at that time . Dream child while still successful is when box office returns diminished.

Freddy didn't talk too much in N N and was more scary than funny, plus how can anyone say that Miko Hughes can't act convincingly?! Some one hasn't seen the original Pet Sematary.
Re adding the molesting back story for the reboot worked rather well for me, whether subtly referenced or not. The ending was
too cliched though and semi predictable, but more gruesome.

Feel like this brought back the franchise then the 2010 version killed it. If they were to reboot it, Robert and Heather would HAVE to be in it.

Freddy Vs. Jason did a decent job of bringing Freddy back while still referencing his "death" in part 6. The ending can even be taken as a cliffhanger. I'd love to see a continuation of the original Freddy, but Freddy Vs. Jason really raised the stakes
The Dream Master is the third highest grossing film in the franchise after the remake and Freddy Vs Jason.
I loved new nightmare when it came out. Last time I watched it it still held up decently. Except him trying to eat the kid at the end, that never held up. Him flopping his tongue up and down still cracks me up
Please now talk about Halloween III: Season of the Witch. To me it's the second best entry in the series but almost killed the franchise

We have Freddy to thank for all the Tolkien movies, the IT franchise, TMNT( the much better original trip of movies), and Evil Dead franchise too.
Evil Dead came out before Elm Street did.
The Freddy Franchise was already dead by the time New Nightmare came around -- which Wes used as an opportunity to redefine his previous work that had been beyond exhausted & overplayed at that point. If he pandered to fans by including more deaths & nightmares in the movie, which are found in abundance in every previous entry, it would have reduced contrast with previous entries, challenged the franchise less, and cheapened his newer take. Scream is the horror-comedy companion piece to New Nightmare's horror-drama.

The first two were very scary. Little to no jokes. Third one incorporated more humor and I Know is a fan favorite. 4 was pretty good. Started slacking by 5. And sank to a horrid low in "Freddy's Dead". "New Nightmare" was a breath of fresh air. Regarding what killed the Nightmare on Elm Street series, I think Freddy's Dead did a great job of that. Was almost a parody of itself by then. I don't know what the filmmakers were thinking when they conceived that.
New Nightmare is fantastic. My 3rd favourite in the series behind 3 and 1.

Was never a big fan of new nightmare but I do respect it and see what it was trying to do and understand why people like it. Just wasn't my cup of tea tbh. I prefer 1 and 3. Bringing the "real world" into it just made it waaaaaaay too weird for me.

I'm not gonna lie, New Nightmare scared me.. but that's strictly to do with the thought of Freddy's claws coming out of my mattress to kill me was terrifying.

Dream child, knocked it out and then Freddy’s dead finished the job. New nightmare attempted to resuscitate Freddy. You could even argue as great as dream warriors and dream master were, the humour killed the original ethos of Freddy and the darker elements of the child killer.
New Nightmare didn’t fail due to it’s story or writing. Hence why it’s a critical success. Horror was on a major downturn during the time of it’s release, partially due to repetitive productions and also early nineties politics ( of which Scream was a direct commentary on). New Nightmare had a limited release and very little marketing due to the family first political drama of the time. The film itself wasn’t produced for teenagers, it was made for fans of the original who would’ve been around Heather’s age when it was released. It’s a brilliant and underrated film that was really just ahead of its time more than anything else. Freddy’s Dead also had a major effect on this movie’s success as it was received badly even by the fans. Many skipped New Nightmare because they were expecting more of the same.
Not to ramble on but none of these franchises ever really die. All it takes is the right people behind them to make a great stories that aren't repetitive and not too outside the box like Jason X for example.

New nightmare was intended to be the last of the franchise. The franchise ended not because of botched sequels(Halloween) or development hell for potential sequels/crossovers(Friday the 13th). It ended because that is what Wes, the CREATOR of the dang franchise, wanted: to end the franchise and end it better than the horrendous ending Freddy's dead gave us. And although freddy vs jason was always inevitable, in the end, nightmare stopped because of franchise integrity, which is rare, especially in horror.
Freddy's Dead killed it, New Nightmare revived it. New Nightmare revived it. Freddy wasn't the killer in New Nightmare btw, it was a Demon that took his form.
As long as Robert England will put on the mask and claws, there will be a Freddy franchise. They could do A Nightmare In Space, and he'd make it work ha ha ha
New Nightmare really reinvented the genre. It's actually my favorite Nightmare sequel.
Freddy was already dead at that point. New nightmare was brilliant since it allowed them to continue the story, while doing something new, while also being satirical of itself and genre. But it was also a narrative dead end of the series; no where else to go from there.
This series title is under appreciated
Wes craven said that Freddy was supposed to be a child molester in his original movie , he wanted it that way. But people thought that was to far.
