The Slasher genre has provided some of the most vicious villains in the history of horror, but it didn’t spring up overnight. Slashers began as a subgenre of horror movies in the ‘70s, as part of a long lineage of creepy, scary movies like Psycho. Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Leatherface, Chucky, Candyman and more have become cinema icons, despite their grindhouse, low budget origins, and throughout the evolution of horror, the history of slashers shows that the genre quickly came to dominate.
From Halloween to Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to A Nightmare on Elm Street, the evolution of slashers is a slow, graduation process that led to the current horror boom, along with excellent series like Slash Course and How to Kill. Here on NowThis Nerd, we’ve explored the evolution of horror on various ways, but Slashers just won’t die. Whether we’re hunting down the latest AHS 1984 clip or scene, or awaiting the new Halloween Kills trailer, or even tracking down the best horror compilations we can find and keeping track of the kill count, our thirst for scary movies knows no bounds, and if we’ve learned anything from the history of slashers, it’s hard to keep a good monster down!

RIP Wes Craven🙏..he changed the slasher genre forever.
Yeah he really did
With scream?
Trippy Zeke no, I think he was really more known for Nightmare On Elm Street
didn't he passed
You mean John Carpenter
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre does NOT exemplify "gratuitous nudity and blood by the boat loads." There is no nudity, and there is hardly any blood. It is not an example of the common splatter/grindhouse film at all. Its focus is tone and themes of the treatment of human as animals, a twist on the American family, traditional ways of making a living becoming obsolete, etc. The film was grossly mischaracterized in this video
Kurt Olson Agreed.
Yeah I don’t think this video maker actually saw Texas chainsaw
I would also count it as a slasher, its within the spectrum despite its differences to halloween and black christmas
Psycho may have started the slasher genre and I respect it for that. but let’s be honest, Halloween truly started the slasher genre
Guitar Chugs psycho did invent but I think Halloween and Texas chainsaw massacre may them popular
Guitar Chugs Wrong-o. Black Christmas “started” the slasher genre. Halloween, which came a full 4 years later POPULARIZED it. Do some research. Halloween is essentially the unofficial sequel to Black Christmas, which itself was heavily influenced by Italian giallo films.
Basically yes but it was the first Halloween made them popular
Psycho was the early slasher
Ahh psycho, black christmas, halloween is how it evolved at the time.
Dude... Leigh is pronounced Lee. You're doing a horror series. Respect the Queen Mother.
He also said Powers instead of Powell...
It made it worse as he'd just said Jamie LEE. haha.
I came here to say the same. WTH lol
@@paulpetroleum Exactly. Her middle name of Lee(referencing Jamie Lee, of course) came from her mother's maiden name, Leigh. Two spellings, one pronunciation, lol!
It's worse with comics man
I've been watching horror movies, thriller movies, science fiction movies & slasher movies since I was a little kid.
Good story Chris
Me too.
I disagree that nightmare on elm Street killed the slasher genre! It took a different approach to not being a cookie cutter film like so many others. People want variety not just same old approach over and over again
Bad takes from this guy huh
I personally consider the Town That Dreaded Sundown to be the first slasher when it comes to the way we classify the genre now
Yeah, not to mention the killer in that film inspired the look of Jason, in Friday the 13th part 2. Also, I thought I'd mention that the real life events that inspired that movie took place, just 25 minutes from where I live. I've been to Spring Lake Park in Texarkana, which is where many of the murders took place.
@@brandonpage7087 wrong, jason is a complete rip off of micheal myers. Even sean Cunningham admited it
I guess you missed Bob Clark’s 1974, Black Christmas. Genuine OG.
I’m so glad you mentioned “Peeping Tom”, I think that movie is massively underrated and it’s often ignored. I’m also glad you mentioned the influence of Grand Guignol, that seems to get overlooked quite a bit as well.
5 steps in the massive history of the sub-genre
1.The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Black Christmas, and The Town that Dreaded Sundown were the first two that set up what the genre could be with a villain being their most defying attribute.
2.Halloween took a stab at creating something super marketable
3.Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street came to define the genre
4.Scream re-inveggerated the genre
5.Then slasher films just...kinda went the way of the dinosaur with very little in the way of acceptions. Hatchet, Rise of Leslie Vernon, and a few other indie flicks are all I can think of in the way of slashers.
Good way of putting it. Props for mentioning Hatchet in the latter category.
Black Christmas gets my vote for the first official North American slasher. All the elements were there, in fact, I’m sure you know that Halloween was, in essence, BC’s unofficial sequel., I think it’s fair to say that Halloween was the first film to truly popularize the genre, but it owes a debt of gratitude to Bob Clark and Black Christmas. As for Scream, it is the only movie in my all-time Top 10 horror films to be released after 1980, coming in at a strong #6. And, of course, as the videographer states here, the entire slasher genre owes almost everything to the Italian giallo movies which came before it. They clearly set the mold for much of the modern slasher genre.
“Black gloved bare hands” this word combination hurt my head.
That does sound wierd, I'll give you that. I noticed when he said it, too. But I think what he meant was, "bare hands" as in, using only his hands themselves to kill, like choking or strangulation, instead of having a weapon in his hand to kill with.
Dude how did you get footage of Will Smith's nightmare on my street?!?! It's not supposed to exist anywhere!!!
Thomas Spiggle yet it's sitting right on UA-cam in its entirety
@@sgillman16 could you send me a link? I haven't been able to find it.

Thomas Spiggle I posted the link. Let me know if you see it. If not, Just Type It Into The search: DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Nightmare on my street
0:43-0:58 Yeah, the slasher formula’s pretty clear cut.
*snickers* Clear cut.
You guys are the best. As a horror film fanatic I appreciate the deep dives you take to explain the history & why people are do drawn to it. Keep doing what you're doing. And a very heartfelt thanks- whether you personally care or not.
This channel, found flix, and kill count satisfy my Halloween heart
This channel is so underrated
@11:49 One of the first horrorcore songs.
This is the thriller thriller night
Love slasher movies! Kind of sad that you forgot to mention the “krimi film” genre. It’s also worth mentioning movies like Dementia 13 (1963), which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
Did anybody notice in Halloween 2018 that Michael had the stab mark from the crochet needle in his neck in the first scene?
im so excited for these halloween horror videos
Technically the town that dreaded sundown was the first real slasher villain. It came out before Halloween and technically Psycho wasn't really considered a slasher movie at the time
Everyone who thinks they know Jason’s whisper:ch ch ch ah ah ah
Me:ki ki ki mah mah mah
Cool little short video. Subscribed thanks!
Can you do a new yellow spandex video Of Robin Jason Todd Or the Green Lantern
Loved this. Love horror. Love slashers. Just subbed!
I definitely count Texas Chainsaw as the first slasher.
Group of young people killed one by one by a memorable assassin with a mask. It's got a final girl, a weapon of choice for the killer, and a run-for-your-life kind of chase. JC's Halloween is one of my favourite movies of all time, but i'd be blind to say that its tropes weren't already put in motion by Hooper (and Clark and Bava and Argento in a less complete way... not to say that their films are inferior because of that).
More like black Christmas was the first
Let me tell you why I think it’s not. Slasher stands for stalk and slash. TCM has more of a grindhouse film feel to it, in which a group of hapless kids intrude on a family of grave robbing cannibals. Not quite a slasher, though it’s among my Top 3 horror films of all time. Black Christmas is, IMHO, is the first true North American slasher to really bring all of the ingredients together. It’s clearly Halloween’s biggest inspiration. Some say pHween was BC’s unofficial sequel.
@@gavinjett1487 100%
Laurie Strode & Nancy Thompson vs Michael Myers & Freddy Krueger in the same movie would be sick! Maybe we’d even get to see Myers vs Krueger briefly
You missed Black Christmas from 74, Halloween’s biggest influence.
You all should get Dead Meat to host one of your videos.
You love dead meat to
@@dexteradams8587 - yeah, now let's get to the killcount.
😆 “Billy Shakes”
Dug that, myself.
This should be longer like at least an hour. This is great take and there is no way it should be just 12mins long. Please recon this one 😝😝😝😝
Ronald Reagan wasn’t in office in 1980. He was elected in 1980 but didn’t take office until 1981. But I get your point about the pearl clutching panic over horror cinema.
Great research good video. I still think of this day Wes Craven was making fun of the genre when he made scream
1:12 after watching candyman's kill count in deadmeat i just cant stop saying "BE MY VICTIM" whenever i see this guy no matter the movie
Slasher movies is my favorite horror sub-genre
Please do a how to survive goosebumps monsters!
Peeping Tom 1960s really predicted the serial killers of the 70S.
When you got to the 80s I got so height
gizmo i think he meant to say hyped
"Happy October everyone!"
*Sweats in April*
Amazing
Storks is definitely top 5 slashers for me personally
Joker cameo 1:35

Tbh I watched you guys since 2018 I loved you guys how to kill I thought you would do it in different ways I kinda didn’t like but I still love you guys🤗
whats the song that starts playing at 6:22 ?
aw man black christmas is so good and honestly stupid under rated. 70s slashers are just the best in my opinion my personal favorite is halloween :)
You forgot about the mummy's Hand by Universal Pictures the Karis mummy series is really an early prototype slasher series so many of the tropes are there
Friday the 13th 6 is the best, btw. Not 4.
6 has a great tongue-in-cheek attitude, but I still prefer 7 where Jason was up against a telekinetic "victim".
Those are my top 2 in all honesty.
MavenCree Oh, come on. The first one is. Then the 2nd, then they all sucked.
6th and 3rd. As much as 9th sucked, I love the presentation; just so 90s I love it
YES
Can you do a how to kill. Creature from the black lagoon.
Made out of bees BEADS
Moose is in the house!
I think Alfred Hitchcock was the first to make suspense/ thriller movies mainstream. Then people like Stanley Kubrick’ Made A film called a Clockwork Orange which was considered a complete taboo film for its time when it was released in the U.K. Then of course we had European Italian film makers like Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci Who also turned up the anti in a big way In the horror, Suspense, and Thriller genres. After them we had a little Californian Film by John Carpenter called Halloween which was a huge game changer. Once we got into the 80’s, horror films and slasher films took on a whole new life. In a way you guys here at the channel are correct when you say we as humans have always had a fascination with the macabre. The ancientRomans couldn’t get enough of their blood sport in the form of the gladiator matches. When you look back at the origins of the horror genre to where it is now, it’s definitely been a wild ride!
How can you do a history of the slasher film without Bob Clark’s seminal 1974 even being mentioned??
I ❤ Slasher movies ❤
I hate to be that person but it's Michael Powell not Powers. He was for a while part of the legendary filmmaking duo of Powell and Pressburger, who created such masterpieces as Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes. While Psycho was a huge success, Peeping Tom destroyed Michael Powell's career. He was practically stoned in the streets after its release. It is now rightly seen a classic.
NERDD!!!!!
There’s a lot of little mistakes here, but overall good job
Background song: old school danger doom
If you think about it we always had a thing for bloodshed
What's the song at around 6:20
wow I got this 1 min agao
6:39 Kobe of he’s moring someone
Marian Crane is not the protagonist, she’s Norman Bates antagonist. He is the protagonist of the story. Robert Blochs book had him as so. Crane was a bait and switch.
Did you say 1984 is when these movies reached its peak?
Few weeks ago, no lie; i posted that AHS 1984 was referenced to best year of the slasher genre ever!
1984 is the year that the best slasher of all time came out.
Freddy Krueger is the GOAT of Slashers
Michael Powell directed Peeping Tom -- not Michael Powers...
Nice video, though.
Last House on the Left
There’s gonna be a 3 reboot of black Christmas
SsjMiltonB 29 you mean a threeboot
Please do how to kill the tall man
Spooktober
I don't wanna be that correcting guy and stuff. (I still am) but check out adam ruins everything episode about gladiator fights. It wasnt that much about blood
1:15
9:04
It's a Chef's knife not a butcher's knife.
The slasher movie comes from the hate you had from that one teacher
I meam I'm pretty sure that Friday the 13th part V and April Fool's Day caused the downfall of slasher movies but I don't think it helped that Freddy got more and more goofy with each installment, but still wrong to say that.
I agree nightmare on elm Street raised the bar on slasher films, but brought to end the slasher films no way! Nobody wants to watch cookie cutter slasher movies over and over again
@@joeymorvant161proven point let's not forget the dark humor used as well!!
@@davidjohnson8854 True. Freddy was the first wisecracking killer I remember.
Slashers
Wait! What about the Evil Dead? I thought that was a game changer?🤔
Evil Dead's not really a slasher movie.
Supernatural
Halloween
🎃🎃
Funny thing is there is a black Christmas movie coming out this year.
Another BC remake. Can ya believe it??
Why Jason
I guess slasher films have a long history but not the idea from the 80s but yeah cuz I'll call them Proto slashers I'll be the best word to call them
Make a how kill demons

PSYCHO IS NOT A SLASHER FILM!!!!! Two kills does not qualify it as a “slasher”
Technically it's considered the first
Joystick Shinobi I know but it shouldn’t imo
How
Joystick Shinobi No; it’s not.
Too many people get hung up on genre(movies, tv, music, books). Good is good. Psycho could qualify for multiple genres, lol, and I'd still dig it.😊

Im an actuall psycho. But dont worry. If I'm going to kill anyone, it's going to be a killer. Basically kind of like Dexter. Although I dont think dexter is a slasher.
Can you please finally take out Jason once and for all??
I'm very bothered that he mispronounced Janet Leigh's name. It's pronounced like "Lee."

Your name definitely is true! I love your dog already
