I drove from Kentucky to Carrboro in December to see him at the Cradle. Never thought it would be the last time but damn I'm glad I got inspired to make that trip. Heartbroken.
I saw this when it aired and remember being bewildered and fascinated at the same time. 20 years later I feel the same way. This kid is just astonishingly cool and funny. I love this clip.
Just found him in 2022 and feel blessed to have heard him live and say a quick hello. Lived in Carrboro and chapel hill for over 20 yrs and still missed him. What a legend that has inspired so many artists, his biggest fans. Saw in an interview he defined rock and roll simply as “ Speeded-up folk music” hell yeah! Did great visual art also. Rest in power Dex. His energy and music live on!
3:44 Buddy cover like I've never heard before... better than the OG. I mean it. If there is anyone out there with a complete version like this, please post it! Nothing else out there sounds like this! Nothing ever will...
You don't know how many times I googled different combinations of the lyrics I could decipher before I read your comment. Thank you sir. I knew the song was familiar.
this is why i love youtube. i have never heard of the flat duo jets or dexter romweber. but through the magical world of the tube i have found them. and they are fucking outrageous.
He did another classic episode with Alex Chilton to promote the album "Feudalist Tarts." That one and this episode with Dexter are my faves from The Cutting Edge.
@HappyGuitarFellow This video is from a show that was on MTV in the 80s called "IRS's The Cutting Edge". It is a crime against pop culture that the show has never been released (to my knowledge) on DVD. Thanks cmanzan for posting.
Rest In Peace Dex. I got to play with him a few times and o e of the times I asked him what happened to The Mos. He told me this wild story that his buddy and him took acid one day and Dex went on a walk. His buddy fell asleep somehow in The Mos and woke up to the place on fire. They were using candles as a light source. He ran out of the place before it went down. Dex around this time came back and saw the whole place going up in smoke. Still high and thinking his friend was still inside burning, he ran into his moms house crying and called 911. That's when his friend came in from the front porch to Dexter's extreme relief.
If you're talking about the crazy hazy kisses performance, it was removed because it is from the Athens GA Inside Out movie. They probably saw it and took it off because of copyright.
This video is sofa king great. Thx for posting. Dex has such creativity not only for the music but to design such a living space like that at a young age. The emotion in his voice when he discusses Holly, etc is so genuine. I don't think he's weird. He's refreshingly unique, interesting and original..i.e. not boring. I love how you constantly hear cans kicked around as they navigate..and he is baked to the absolute bejeezus haha. May the Internet bring Dex the fame he has long deserved.
Just as that slim picture of Elvis in Dexters crypt is the best Presely ever look,so is the sound of the Flat Duo Jets in this clip.Fucking best sound they ever had!Sooo good
This kind of clip is exactly why I love UA-cam. I hadn't thought of FDJ in quite some time, looked them up here, and bam, this clip was first on the search. Thank you so much for posting this. Dex and Crow stayed at my place once after a show opening for the Reverend Horton Heat, and they were good people. I'll always remember that, and shit like this brings back some great memories. Five stars for you cmanzan.
I never seen this!!thanks for the video. I seen the Flat Duo Jets live in WI.and have to agree with the rest here great live band. Lots a heart & soul. Thanks again fro the vid..
there was drawing of the mausolem on go go harlem baby and i cant believe there actually was, this holiest of rock n roll houses that spawned the legend that is DEX & CROW this video is really cool ..unbelievable..thanks
same here man. i don't know how i found this amazing, brilliant, crap quality clip half a year ago, but it changed the course of my musical path. this low quality, shitty looking little video inspired me more than anything else i've heard in years. i want to rock like dexter romweber. loud, sharp and mothingfucking rock and roll - like it was originally intended.
saw Dex and Sara last night at the White Mule in Columbia, SC. whatta show! talked briefly with Dex about Silvertone guitars, he is on #13. Sara is cool, we talked about WQDR-FM and a band called X-Teens. Rawk!
ive always wanted to start a band with this sort of sound (blues punk is what i call it but i dont get real technical) i love singin like that and i wish i could learn guitar the only problem is i dont know one dam person that likes this kinda sound
The world is a little less bright today. Love you forever, Dex.
This is the first MTV cribs
❤
This is how I'll always remember him. So many memories of Chapel Hill in the 80s had Dex in them.
Hey I saw somewhere it was 1985.
Glad I got to see you live Dex. Never be another like you.
I drove from Kentucky to Carrboro in December to see him at the Cradle. Never thought it would be the last time but damn I'm glad I got inspired to make that trip. Heartbroken.
Can't begin to explain the joy this brings me
hahah i love how everywhere they walk you hear a bunch of cans clashing and stuff lol
I saw this when it aired and remember being bewildered and fascinated at the same time. 20 years later I feel the same way. This kid is just astonishingly cool and funny. I love this clip.

I seen Dexter Romweber many times as Flat Duo Jets & on his own. Rest In Peace....
3:44 Buddy cover like I've never heard before... better than the OG. I mean it. If there is anyone out there with a complete version like this, please post it! Nothing else out there sounds like this! Nothing ever will...
Nice shout out by Crow to Big John, our childhood friend. See ya in Valhalla, Dex..
Dexter a awesome tortured soul...sad to hear his sis passed away...rock on Dexter....
He's gone now.
@@larryn2682I suspect that wherever he is, he's still rocking on🤘
we had the honor of meeting him in 91 and opening for him in 2002 what a great cat!!
Every now and then i have to watch this again.
Yeah. Agreed
the song at the end is "Girl on my mind" originally by the one and only Buddy Holly
You don't know how many times I googled different combinations of the lyrics I could decipher before I read your comment. Thank you sir. I knew the song was familiar.
sounds amazing the way Dex and Crow do it
it was never released, was it?
this is why i love youtube. i have never heard of the flat duo jets or dexter romweber. but through the magical world of the tube i have found them. and they are fucking outrageous.
when i saw this in the 80's i thought it was some kind of joke, but loved the realness of it, still do
Time is subjective. Good artists and music is timeless.
This is one of the best fuckin videos on youtube.
Back in the olden tymz I bought Flat Duo Jet records and I played them on my record player
So you weren't into cassettes back then?
Peter Zaremba was actually the host of IRS's The Cutting Edge, which is where this clip came from. It aired on MTV on Sunday night before 120 Minutes
He did another classic episode with Alex Chilton to promote the album "Feudalist Tarts." That one and this episode with Dexter are my faves from The Cutting Edge.

Rest in peace, legend
THIS IS FUCKING GANGSTER
RIP, Dexter. Rock on forever with the Rock of Ages.
Rip to a legend
this is what i imagine jack white being like if the white stripes never made it
I'm a little bit speechless. So incredibly weird and amazing.
i found these guys through it might get loud and now i dont think il ever forget em

He's just always had a great voice.
I've met him a couple times and he's the smoothest guy. Nicest too.
this is one of the coolest episodes of the cutting edge!
Thank you very much Dayyv. Much appreciated. This is my fav Flat Duo Jets song, even though it's short and a cover..
Caught the Jets once what an experience. He is playing with his sister on drums now. Check him out he is the real deal!
Aye R.I.P. Dex - fly high. Such a loss. 😢

there was drawing of the mausolem on go go harlem baby and i cant believe there actually was, this holiest of rock n roll houses that spawned the legend that is DEX & CROW
this video is really cool ..unbelievable..thanks
Dex,,
I LOVE YOU MAN..!!
I remember asking Dex about the Mausoleum at a show in '89....his response "it BURNED DOWN". Too bad. Still see him around here occasionally.
I read in an interview that it burned down in 86, during an acid trip. He also said that one of his friends almost died, barely escaping.
acid.
alot of it. and a fine taste and appreciation for the american rock and roll.
Dex sais your welcome Jack White!
oh damn...thank you
At my funeral or/pyre I WANT this to be one of the many.

DarkJedi246 Thanks man!
La verdad es que suenan bien.
That's right...it was the Cutting Edge. Thanks, Bob.
The craziest guy ever!!!
u can use any reverb pedal to get that or u can get a delay pedal and set it to repeat really fast and fade really quick
now thats rock n' roll. what a fuckin voice.
I knew guys that lived like that
This guy is a god.
you see where Jack got his look from. His solo style is also inspired by Dexter.
@GeorgeDeadson yeah i would use one of those fer slide thats for sure
blows buddy's version out of the sky.
RIP Dex.
No it's Peter Zaremba from the Fleshtones. He was the host of "120 Minutes" on MTV back in the day...
He's playing in Atlanta next week, with Sara on drums.
0:05 - 0:12 : isn't that Peter Zaremba from the Fleshtones walking into the house? He presented Cutting Edge on MTV in the 80s
This is from the Cutting Edge, and yes, Peter Zaremba.
buddy holly-girl on my mind
DEXTER FUCKING RULES!!!!!! still rockin' today.
Bad man Brown!
Dexter is the perfect name for this dood
