One of the most beautiful songs ever written, in my opinion. I have times where I listen to it 20 times in a row. Only a handfull of songs can make it to that special category.
Peter gabriel, the man in a class of his own, his looks here, like the grandfather, of the singer he was, on foxtrot in 1972, he was utterly utterly fantastic, with genesis, he solo stuff, is great, and this song is so sweet.
People may say that they are no longer interested in watching the Oscars --- well, here are two reasons to Watch: Peter Gabriel + Randy Newman --- duet.
That was the first time I'd seen Peter since he shaved his head. I remember being quote shocked at the time, which I'm sure he would've loved. Beautiful song and performance.
And amazing song, and infinitely better and more timeless than whatever won that year (Stephen Schwartz). Great love and respect to two enduring maestros, Randy Newman & Peter Gabriel.
What blows my mind is how much Peter changed physically in the five years between Secret World Live and this performance. It’s like he aged twenty years in those five. It’s funny how some people turn the corner from their young look to their old - Peter looked the same until 1994 and then has looked like this from 1999 to now. So strange.
David Bowie was three years older than Pete and didn’t age anywhere close as drastically as Pete did (Until he started to die from cancer). The argument that it’s just getting older doesn’t seem to hold much water. Everyone does show signs of aging, but he really just let himself go. I say this as a fan.
I think Peter just gave up when he started to go bald and piled on the pounds for a while. If he had went on a diet and gotten implants he might have looked younger, but that isn't the type of guy he is.
I'm literally amazed how much Peter aged between 1994 and 1999. In 94 he still looked young (same as he did in the 80s) but by 99 he had the grey beard and was bald on top.
Yes, at the time everybody said he was unrecognizable when he appeared here. The first time with this look. I saw him live in his early 90s "Secret World" tour. One of the best concerts I have ever been.
This was a regular on the BBC 2 Morning Show when Terry Wogan was doing it. I used to love that show, incredable funny but some cracking tunes. Also check out Beth Neilson Chapman's "I Find Your Love" Eve Cassidy "Fields of Gold" or Katie Melua "Nine Million Bicycles" Paul Walters had a real talent for spotting the talent and Terry for presenting it.
I think Wogan was just about peak radio. Paul Walters picking absolute musical gems and Terry making us howl with laughter e.g Janet & John stories. The genuine love that listeners had for the show just shone through and also Terry's affection for his "listener". When he played this song he said he usually had to go and lie down after listening to it.😊
A travesty that this didn't get the oscar. A simple, delicate song written by a master craftsman. It's classic, traditional songwriting with a lyric that appeals to both young and old. Don't stop, keep going. The arrangement and simple chord structure is beautiful. What did win? An insipid, bland RnB ballad with acrobatic vocals... "when you believe". It's ok, nothing special. Forgettable. Randy and Peter should have won.
Actually you're refering to the 72nd academy awards. That's were Phil Collins won. This was from the 71st academy awards, a year earlier. The song that won that year was When You Believe from the Prince of Egypt- Stephen Schwartz writer/composer.
This SHOULD have won the Oscar!!!
Those two gentlemen, Randy and Peter, If I’m ever stranded on a desert island, all I’ll wish for is their music.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written, in my opinion. I have times where I listen to it 20 times in a row. Only a handfull of songs can make it to that special category.
Beautiful. This is the great side of humanity.
This song was robbed of its Oscar!!
I cry every time I hear this, even now and I'm 65
Stephen Simpkins Right there with you my friend!!
Me too. It’s so beautiful!
I'm 32 years old and I cry with this song.
I'm 70 and do cry every time as well, it's too close to my old dog Roy who died around the same time it came out

I love the smile on randy Newman’s face just before the end of the song he knows they have nailed it.one of his best
I like how into the song he is, and he’s watching Gabriel throughout, like a proud dad!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written for a film.
Truly!
A beautiful message to the downtrodden and downhearted. What you are and what you do matters, whatever happens that'll do.
Paul Murray "a little courage goes a long long way".
two of the greatest talents ever to have walked this earth. Stunning
Newman's song possessed by PG's unique soul. Maybe Hollywood didn't realize the privilege of witnessing this moment.

He looks more like The Godfather-Marlon Brando.
This is the song that Newman should have won the Oscar for.
Agree, wholeheartedly. Absolutely exquisite.
Wonderful song! A hidden treasure!
Simple and magnificient!
agreed
Gets me every time. :-)
Could we all take this message to heart? The world would be a better place if we did.
This was robbed of the Oscar!! 😔 😔 😔 😔
There were in total 5 great songs and prince actually did deserved it
@@scoutart1508 no way

It’s one the most beautiful songs short and to the point ….. a tear jerker … love it !
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard by two masters, at the top of their game!
sublime.
Nice song full of hopes!
This song makes me cry
Brilliant

Two legends.

@@MrGabeanatorpretty but lacks the magnificence this one does.
@@shimmeringfairydust3275i beg to differ all the nominees that year were equally beautiful
I love Randy Newman, but this is my absolute favorite of his songs, for the lyrics alone. So so beautiful.

OOAK...Peter Gabriel, I am so grateful for his far superior talent...It was a pleasure to get to hug his mother at the Secret World tour.
Peter Gabriel is singing a classic hymn. Congratulations to Peter Gabriel for his Oscar 1999. Now, Peter Gabriel is finishing his new album.
This is a gorgeous song
A song that can get you through these strange days 2 legend s

Really doesn't get any better than these 2 Guys.🤙
OOOOOOOHHHH!!!!! Look at the piano man!!!!!!!

He just got bald and gained some weight. The recipe to look older.
So true, he looked youthful until 1994-95 then was like a literal old man by '99. It's like aging all caught up with him with a bang!

Yup. Sad he was even questioned about it in interviews.
@@laartwork what did he say?Sorry but I lost my hair?..Guess he could have kept in better shape though. He really piled it on poor guy.

I had NO idea this was preformed at the Oscars thanks👍
I have my funeral planned and this song will be played at my grave site.
Maybe you could also have it sung on a joyous occasion like your birthday. That way you can enjoy the dedication.
I have a severe mental illness. I have rescued animals for 53 years, which often kept me from suicide. Now I am better and looking for a job.
I love you, Peter.
After 1999, Peter had a grey beard and no hair. That’s the look that he’s been sporting pretty much ever since. Really good.

I love it ...i do..

The Oscars were not big enough for the brass band which made it half as good!

When Randy writes a song he does not sing but someone else does, what he does is he plays his magic piano while the other person sings.

Nice song but why do I get the feeling he wrote this song thinking the movie was going to be more like its predecessor?
I can't believe this lost,.. to an unforgettable bad song from Phil Collins,..it makes no sense
