Are Lighter Trucks Better?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 вер 2022
- After how impressive the Thunder Lights Trucks were, I was happy to get my hand on a pair of these Thunder Hollow Lights Trucks!
The main difference being that these Thunder Hollow Lights Trucks have a hollow axle as well as the hollow kingpin, unlike the Thunder Lights which only have the hollow kingpin with a standard full axle...
It's safe to say these Thunder Hollow Lights Trucks are just as impressive as the Thunder Lights Trucks and the difference in weight was quite noticeable while I was skating them.

Have you guys ridden Hollow trucks?
Let me know how you find them below 👇🏼
I’ve been riding Thunder trucks since 1994, current set for a few years. Never ridden hollows but these will be my next set after your review.
I just ride normal thunders might have to try the hollows✊
@@aussiekartman Damn, that just proves how good and long lasting they are 👌🏼
Yeah they are actually really good!
@@harryrethus7309 Either way, Thunders trucks are the best 😍
@@LeonPaxton hollows or lights best?
Love your grinding and sliding. Smooth operator.
Also Thunder Hollow Lights are the bomb. I’ve ridden them in 147s and 149s and never been disappointed.
Haha thanks heaps dude! 🙏🏽
They sure are, I'm late to the party but I'm glad to be here now 🙌🏽
The base plates are aluminum. The only thunder trucks that have titanium is the titanium lights and its only the axle rod. Thunder lights,Hollow Lights & Titanium lights are all amazing. Each lighter than the latter and in the case of the titanium lights you will never have to worry about messed up axles nor having to retread them. Hope that data helps. I strongly recommend that you try them!!! Really great video and you rip Bro!!! Thunder Knows!!!
Oh thanks dude, I messed that part up!
Damn I think I will have to try those ones next! 🙏🏽
@@LeonPaxton none of them has titanium baseplate, titanium is just inside the hanger, not even hanger is made from titanium.
Titanium don't feel right for some reason thats why I just go with the hollow lights.
Glad you corrected him. ... but how you figure about axles not getting messed up or not needing threading? You think it's invincible? It's not.
@@onegod7257 I'm solely speaking on experience. I had a constant issue with the axl getting messed up and having to reach thread them. Once I switched to titanium lights since the rod is the titanium piece it has never messed up. It might be the case that some extreme abuse might damage it but it hasn't happened to me.
That was a nice looking back side 50 you did on the bank to ledge. You get two thumbs up my friend 👍👍😊
Thanks dude, that ledge is actually so hard to skate lol
Very fun looking park - great review
Thanks man, that park is so fun!
Great review! Awesome skatepark (love the bowls)! Even the music adds an upbeat vibe to a chilled session. Well done.
What's that song?
Thanks dude, glad you enjoyed it!
I’m not sure but I’ll find the song name for you 👍🏽
That park looks amazing
Yeah dude, Meadowbank skatepark is so fun!
I’ve found the hollow axle is slower in comparison to the titanium axles. I believe the hollow allowed significant vibration, which in turn absorbed my momentum. That’s been my experience anyhow. I prefer the solid axle LIGHTS over the hollows.
That's actually a good point man!
I think I would prefer the Lights too if I had to choose but only because I grind a lot so it's more peace of mind having a solid axle but the Hollow Lights are still amazing so far 👌🏼
Hi Leon.
Nice video and review 👊🤙🏼.
What brand of camera do you have?
It’s always a clean shot even you made it zoom.
Thanks. Keep it safe.
Thanks heaps man!
I'm actually filming most of my videos on the Iphone 11 Pro Max and I edit the videos to pan when I'm putting my videos together 👌🏼
Hi Leon, I've been riding my 148 hollow lights for about 4 months. And so far these are my favorite trucks of all time. However, I noticed that my back truck axle has bent, does this have happened to you before? Im very confused since I only ride them occasionally and just do low impact with some ledge/curve skating.
What do you think?
Thank you for your great videos, keep them coming!
Oh damn, that sucks!
That happened to me with the Independent Hollows but never with any of the Thunder Hollows I've skated 🤔
That definitely sounds like those trucks are faulty though if you've only been skating low-impact!
Thanks dude, appreciate that heaps! 🙏🏽
Such a sick video I really wanna try thunder lights now got my first set of titanium Indy’s so I’ll see how I go 😅
Indy titanium one of the best!
Thanks so much man!
Let me know how they go 🙏🏽
These are the best trucks hands down on the market! The Thunder Titanium lights i have the 147's
also i own the Independent forged titanium 144's both are amazing
trucks lol had to have them both! Btw my Thunder titanium lights 147's are
customized with all custom titanium hardware from Japan! Here's what's on the truck?
It has 1 top titanium bushing washer cup, and it has 1 bottom titanium bushing washer cup/2 Titanium hollow kingpin's/2
Titanium kingpin nuts/Titanium 7/8ths Allen key hardware/4 small titanium nuts that screw on the 7/8ths
hardware /4 titanium Axle nuts/Tekton Precision-Profiled XT Steel bearing Spacers/Bones
hard bushings/Riptide pivot cups/Bones Swiss Ceramic bearing's/Powell Peralta Dragon Formula Green Dragon 52mm wheels.
The titanium hollow kingpin was installed by my local skateshop if anybody
interested in buying a titanium hollow kingpin
that's actually hard to get! in matter of fact the only comapny i knew that
made them were theeve came in a pack of 2 and they
were expensive i used to buy mine
on Amazon but they are discontinued now.
the link is below they will be shipped from japan!
stoke-shop.com/collections/all/products/stoke-titanium-kingpin
Definitely agree! 🙌🏽
Oh dude, that sounds sick! Did you fully chose the way the truck was built?
@@LeonPaxton i tried posting my comment it would not let me it's to long i guess lol and it has links so i texted you on Instagram it's worth a read?
@@LeonPaxton I have been thinking about selling my whole setup but who has the balls and Bread to buy it? with the complete titanium hardware never been skated i just look at it all day long lol not to mention it has possibly everything you could ever dream of on skateboard i think the total on my whole setup was about $733 which that's the most expensive skateboard that i know of i guess that was the goal and i would like to sell it for maybe that price but still the parts were so hard to find and the board setup it's just nuts Insane!!! If you want a whole run down on what's on the board let me know i think i already posted it tho?
@@LeonPaxton And yeah i chose the way i wanted the trucks to be built i chose all titanium Hardware and Bones Hard bushings Riptide pivot cups Spitfire Tablets 52mm wheels with Bones Swiss ceramics bearings 14 pieces of titanium hardware per truck🤯
@@G3T_R3KT_XM8 No problem man, I'll check my Instagram 👌🏼
I'm pretty sure I've had Thunder Hollow Lights before, because I remember having a hollow axle and kingpin. Ever since I went to Independent I really see the differences, I can Ollie easier and the nose is definitely lighter, I had to relearn manuals on Indy's though. I don't hate Thunder trucks, I just got tired of skating them over the years. I went from Forged Titanium Independent to regular Indy's, I can't go back to lower trucks now.
Yeah that sounds like them!
That makes sense dude, Indy trucks give you a shorter wheel base 👌🏽
Leon, you ever think of trying the “team hollows”? For that 1mm higher baseplate? I just went from hollow lights to team hollow lights and it def helped with less wheel bite.
Oh dude, I had never thought about that before but I'd definitely be keen to try them out!
I'll try and get my hands on some for my next pairof trucks 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton Seems like it would be something youd like because of your size, board size, and tech style. Cant wait to see that review if you end up doing it. Love the reviews and videos dude!
Awesome review! What board size you riding?
Thanks heaps man! I ride an 8.75"
What size on the board and trucks? Think i missed that. Awsome skating btw, keep grinding
Thanks heaps dude! 🙏🏽
I ride an 8.75" deck with 151 Thunder trucks 👌🏼
so i’m coming from a thunder hollow lites 147 and recently just got thunder lites 148’s by accident, do you think it’ll be a big difference in skating compared to the hollow lites?
Nah dude, not at all! The ‘lights’ are slightly heavier than the ‘hollow lights’ since they have a solid axle but I don’t think you will notice the weight difference at all man
I have a 8.5 indy short board real and a 8.25 thunder habitat long board great for flip tricks
Thats sick man!
I need to find a bacon from unheard district
Bro that skatepark was soo fun !!!
Where is it ??
That's Meadowbank skatepark in Ryde dude, So damn fun!
Since you come from thunder lights, is there a noticeable difference between the green and the blue bushings? or are they completely the same besides the color? thx!
The feel exactly the same to me and they are great!
I think the transparent bushings that come with both of the trucks are a bit softer and better quality than the solid coloured bushings
@@LeonPaxton aah good to hear thank you!
What size wheels do you ride! I just ordered my second pair of Thunders (149 hollow lights ii) cant wait to get them in and put together a new complete. Thunder > Independent
In this video I'm riding 55mm OG Classics but I've recently dropped down to a 54mm Conical 👌🏼
Hell yeah, Thunder are the best!
@@LeonPaxton You dont get wheelbite? i have to skate 52mm or under with Thunders or I wheelbite all over the place lol
polejam fifty was sick
Thanks dude, that shit was terrifying to try! 😅
I got 58 wheels you think the thunder hollow lights are too low for them???
Nah dude, all of the Thunders are highs unless they are marked as lows so it will be perfect but they are big wheels so you could need some riser pads if wheel bite becomes a problem for you 🤔
I just picked up a girl deck and love the shape, but found that the board was extremely heavy. Should I buy a set of the hollow lights thunders to fix the issue? I skate thunder raws and like them on just about every board, but the girl board paired with these thunder standards feel like im skating a deck with Indy standards. It just feels like I need to exert more effort and work harder to have the same height on most other setups.
What size board did you get dude?
Getting hollow or light trucks are definitely going to help make your setup lighter. It's more crucial for me since I am riding a 9" board now so I'm trying to drop weight wherever I can lol
@@LeonPaxtonI skate a size 8 board. The hollow lights feel too light, but I turned them into the thunder lights by using the standard axle with the hollow kingpin/forged plate. I’d say this combo works on the slightly heavier girl board. Feels solid for drops and light enough to have the pop/height on my tricks as if I wear skating standard trucks.
Bought a pair of these (149’s) because of this video ☺️ I mainly use ACE trucks but the Thunder Hollow Lights felt great on my Krooked/Real 8.3” Twin Tail Slick decks. Those decks have a pretty long wheelbase (14.4”) for their size and everybody recommends shorter wheelbase decks with Thunders. What’s your take on that? 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Sick! How have you been finding them?
Well yeah the geometry of Thunder trucks to Independent trucks are different so depending on the trucks you ride, it can actually reduce or increase your wheel base. Same as the bushings and washers you use on the trucks.
But saying that, you can slightly change your wheelbase by how loose or tight you have your trucks! If you crank your kingpin nut all the way down as tight as it goes, that will obviously pivot your truck down lower to the board which will decrease your wheel base since the trucks will be moved closer to each other.
So there is way to many variables when it comes to the trucks you use and how much it will effect your wheel base, that's why I just ride the same trucks all the time so I know there will be no change at all to my wheel base unless the deck is different lol
@@LeonPaxton have been loving them! It works great on this 8.3” Deluxe Slick Twin Tail and it should cos that’s what Ishod’s riding 😅 He uses 8” width Thunders with it though ☺️ Thanks Leon!
@@LeonPaxton do you use riser pads with the Hollow Lights? since these are quite low and your wheels are not that small ☺
I have read some comments that the hollow axels may bend- especially if you are a heavier weighing skate- what's your experience?
I wondered that myself since the axle is fully hollow but I'm on my second pair of these trucks at the moment and I've never had my axles bend at all. I weigh 100kg as well so I'm sure if it was going to then it would have bent already 👌🏼
My bushings is broke , can i change it by bushings bone ?
Yeah dude, you can just get a bushing replacement kit if your truck axles are still good
What’s your long term impression of these? Are you still skating them?
They're amazing dude! I'm onto my second set of them now actually 👌🏼
ua-cam.com/video/C9Pt-6TDOqM/v-deo.html
I ride thunders only because they push my wheelbase out due to their axle placement in relation to the baseplate. I'm 6'8" so I gotta have a long baseplate. I'm 225 so I'm always skeptical of the hollow stuff due to just how heavy I am
That's true, every bit counts! I'm about 100kg and have never had any issues with any of the hollow Thunders 👌🏼
Cool skatepark, where is it?
That's Meadowbank skatepark near Ryde dude 👌🏼
what size wheels are you riding without rizers?
I usually stick to 54mm wheels dude 👌🏼
Does putting in bones medium bushings mess up the geometry of the truck???
That's a good question! I wonder the size and profile difference from the standard Thunder bushings to the Bones bushings 🤔
@@LeonPaxton yeah same. It’s a lot of number involved haha
what if i just suck at skating? should i get these trucks?
Just keep practicing man 🙌🏽
Would you recommend hollow lights or lights for a standard park street skater?
The standard lights will be fine dude, I just wanted the Hollow Lights because my board and wheels are already big and heavy so I wanted to make my set up a bit lighter
@@LeonPaxton is it ok to use thunder lights 148 on a 8.125 deck?
@@sorrydot Yeah dude, that will be a nice and light board for flip tricks 👌🏼
What size are those trucks
I ride 151 Thunder trucks dude 👌🏼
brooo if you could tell me your height/weight and shoe size it would be so helpful to me... I am 6'1" with size 12-12.5 foot 180lb an but i have pretty strong legs... and break my boards on the first day, I ride and 8.5 with thunder 149 hollow lights and have been on the hollow light train for many years but for sure have broken those trucks in literally every area haha! even cracked the metal pivot nipple that goes into the pivot cup. I have been trying to find anyone who skates and 8.75 to 9 deck and get an idea if thats the right size for me because I was thinking of buying a lithe skateboard which is 209$ but won't break and keeps its pop and won't razor tail. you look like 6'4" with size 14 feet haha. do you think I would be happier with 8.75 or 9?
Yeah dude, I'm about 6'1" as well! About 95-100kg and US11 shoe size 👌🏼
I used to break boards a lot too but since I started riding egg boards I haven't snapped or even cracked any of them lol Maybe because I ride deck rails too and that acts as a bit more reinforcement? 🤔
Damn dude, You might have to rock some solid trucks then instead of the hollows!
100& dude! Especially with a size 12 foot, a 9" board will feel perfect for you 🙏🏼
Thunder 149 titaniums are the best trucks ever made, IMO.
I need to try some of those!
What wheels are those?
Spitfire formula four og classic 55s
@@williesctt5 That's the one! 👌🏼
What wheels do u ride
At the moment I'm riding 54mm Spitfire Conicals dude
Hey buddy do you ride the same trucks to the board or do you go the next size up? Or like an example a 8.5" board and 8.5" trucks? I heard some guys like to go a little bit wider for the trucks so the wheels are in line with the edge of the board and not tucked in a bit? Thanks
Hey man, I used to always match my truck size to my board size but you can definitely go slightly smaller or wider without any problems
@@LeonPaxton Thanks bud. Your channel has been a big help!
Review the hollows next!
Which hollows?
@@LeonPaxton thunder hollows, they have a 1mm baseplate rise
I can't seem to find them 🤔
@@LeonPaxton I can’t paste links, but they’re called the ‘Team Hollows’ sorry lol
Oh true, I know the ones!
The baseplates are not titanium, they are aluminum
Yeah I made a mistake on that one 🤦🏻♂
I am no longer riding Indys. The trucks dont turn the way i want and the bushings get stuck to one side. Its time for and upgrade.
Hell yeah, Thunder is the way 🙌🏼
6 month update?
Still going strong dude! I have just replaced my bushings though only because i ride loose trucks and skate a lot of rails & ledges so my bushings get busted about 6 months in but I feel like the trucks will last me another 6 months from now with no problems 👌🏼
Definitely getting the exact same pair for my next trucks too!
@@LeonPaxton Nice got some blue/green electroshocks on the way that should pair nicely with my Foy Gator deck! I have the Thunder solid 161 and 149 and I like those, my faves are new Ace AF1 they have the same slick grind feels as Thunder.
Deck Anti Hero 🦅🛹🛹🔥🔥🔥🔥♥️♥️
The best boards! 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton I have one from black label, im from Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷✌🏼✌🏼🛹🛹🔥🔥
25 years of skating and I've found thunder and royal made the best trucks . Destructo used to make extremely good trucks before they sold their manufacturing to China.
Damn, Destructo trucks used to be my jam back in the day!
I went from indys to thunders from your advice. Thunders kill indys.
You mad the right decision 🙌🏽
No
Indy makes thunders.
Indy's are made in China and Thunder's are mad in San Fransisco 🤔
Too light for me, regret the purchase. Going from Indy’s to these has been a terrible experience. Well made truck regardless, but be very sure before just switching up.
What size board and wheels are you running?
