Never Let Me Go seems to be pretty divisive as a book. I remember the first time I saw the goodreads rating and reviews. I was shook 😂 honestly, it’s my favourite book of all time. A lot of people’s majn criticism is that it seems detached and lacking in emotional impact, but for me that’s always what made it what it is. It’s so subtle and it’s these big emotional things hidden in all these smaller, day to day, ‘insignificant’ moments. These extraordinary circumstances surrounded by such ordinary/banal things and issues and lives. I also always love how Ishiguro writes about memory and perspective.
I so agree with this! A lot of the time when people don't like Never Let Me Go they mention not connecting with Kathy as a character, and I think that's very intentional on the author's part.
Never Let Me Go is also one of my favorite books, so I knew Kayla would hate it lol. I love all of Ishiguro’s books except The Buried Giant so she will probably like that one.
I read it in highschool, when I hated every book I was told to read, and I LOVED it. I've thought about it frequently ever since. I have it on my list to reread it now that I read regularly again and see if I agree with my past self!
It’s my favorite book as well. Once I figured out what was going on, it has such a profound emotional impact. It was like a punch in the gut and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.
Video idea: Reading other people’s cover biases. You have bunnies and hands and it would be interesting to see other peoples’ oddly specific cover weaknesses.
The Devil and the Dark Water is one of my faves! But I have that same issue with getting into a book if I haven't picked up the genre in a while. And Stuart Turton's ending are always... a choice 😂
I cannot read the same genre back to back. I find when I do that I can’t help but compare the books and it lessens my enjoyment of reading on the whole. I need to have variety , always making sure my next book is any genre but the one I just read. It’s like a palate cleanser. Interesting to see someone do the opposite, especially when we have such similar taste in books!
Never having seen a Keira Knightley movie is in and of itself not a travesty, but then I realized that means that you’ve never seen: Pride and Prejudice, Love Actually, Pirates of the Caribbean or Bend it like Beckham. And now I’m just shook. Pride & Prejudice?!?!?! Please what can I do to get you to watch this??
Love Actually will definitely be happening during one of my members movie nights, so there's that! 💕 Pride & Prejudice the book was 3⭐ for me so I just never found the motivation to watch the movie! Honestly I don't think I can name a single historical romance movie I've seen except...Titanic? haha
@@BooksandLala watch it for Matthew MacFadyen, he's such a foooorce in that film - i'm convinced he can get anyone to like Mr. Darcy with his portrayal (and I didn't like the book all that much lol)
@@beckyduff I wouldn't personally say Little Women is a romance, no. It has various love stories throughout it of course though! To me a romance is one where the one (and often only) real plot to follow is a singular romantic relationship that you are rooting for.
Kayla I would love to see a reading vlog where you just read books at YOU want to read and that you have been waiting to fit into a video... but they can be all random! "Reading 5 books I'm excited/hopeful about" or something :)
House of Salt and Sorrows surprised me when I read it because of how much horror imagery there was, and seeing how much you enjoyed Small Favors has me wanting to pick up now!
I’ve always not been able to explain why I’m a mood reader, but you saying you need to read the same sort of genre back to back sums it up, it’s too jarring to swap between them, it also explains why I always have about 18 books on the go at once with chunks of them being from the same genres, you’ve cracked the code for me!
I think you can put plastic wrap over your paint to keep it from drying. When I worked at an Art Therapy non-profit, we would use ziplocks to keep our small 6-pan palettes fresh. It was especially important if we had mixed a specific color we wanted to save but couldn't use it for a few days.
The Cutting Season and Small Favors are two of my favorite books so I’m so happy you liked them! I think you might also like House of Salt and Sorrows!
Ah never let me go is one of my most favorite books, i wish it would have been as mindblowing to you, but well, so cool that you finally read it!! Was waiting for your opinion for so long :))
I'm not sure if you have read this already but Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce is one of my favourites, which was published in 2019. The main character is a criminal barrister and her job features a lot in this book too as the author is an ex barrister herself. It's very gritty, with morally grey characters and has a great twist. 😍 Her latest book (It Ends at Midnight) also has similar themes, but I didn't think it was as good.
Omg I'm so excited that House of Hunger won!! I read it a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it! It's gonna be such a good book to discuss in a live show 😍😍
I loved the writing in Evelyn Hardcastle so much that I immediately bought his next book. That was two years ago and I have yet to read it, so I'm excited to see what you think.
Hahahahaa I couldn't help it. We both showed *such* interest in it in the liveshow, to the point we semi agreed to buddy read it. 🤭 You're lucky I didn't DM you this week and force you to complete it with me hahahaha
Break the Bodies, Haunt the Bones by Micah Dean Hicks is an underrated horror novel I’d love to see you pick for the book club (or just read in general 😅)! It’s a very strange and unique ghost story that also surprised me with how hard-hitting it was when I read it a couple of years ago. At the time I loved it and thought that you could potentially really like it too, so I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on it 🙂
Love having this to watch to start my day! I just DNF'D The Devil and the Dark Water, and I'm disappointed because I usually love mysteries but it is really dragging for me. Nana sounds so interesting, I've added that to my TBR!
I love Stuart Turton. The 7 deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (Americans get an extra 1/2 a death) is one of my favourite books. I really enjoyed The Devil in the Dark Water, and the Sherlock Holmes similarities.
I found a fully annotated copy of Catherine House at a local bookstore and I've been thinking of going back for it because I'm so intrigued. Like i HAVE to get inside this person's head!
I’m so curious if you’d like “The first day of spring” by Nancy Tucker. I think either you’ll love it or hate it 😆 I’m not sure what category to put it in, but it’s definitely dark and psychological. I gave it five stars 😊
I watched Ready or Not a few months back and really enjoyed it! Actually, I just finished These Fleeting Shadows by Kate Alice Marshall and it kept reminding me of that movie. Actually, it’s kind of a mashup of Ready or Not, Knives Out, and the Haunting of Hill House. I ended up totally sucked into the story.
Evelyn Hardcastle was a book that was so hard to pick up, but so intriguing once I could get back into it, and I feel that way about mysteries in general. However I gave Hardcastle 5 stars because I felt like it was so special and unique. I wanted to immediately start it over to see if I could catch anything I missed or forgot. I’m excited to get to Devil and the Dark Water and feel like I’ll try anything he writes.
Similar to your ‘hire a book recommendation’ (where you do an online quiz and it gives you a book). Can you do a video that’s like going into bookstores and either giving them a random brief and seeing what they recommend or just asking for their fave book and if it sounds like something you’d be into, reading it? Or maybe give them a ‘Vibe’ to recommend. Eg ‘what can you recommend me that will make me feel unsettled’ and just read them.
so excited to hear your thoughts on whisper network- it wasn't even a huge fav of mine, i just always thought you would have interesting thoughts on it!
It's been a long time since I read Never Let Me Go but I remember the tragedy of it all just knocking me flat. The emotional gut punch of the whole situation and the futility of fighting against it. Ugh. Just thinking about it hurts. Also - Andrew Garfield's performance in the film is so exceptionally raw. SEEING these kids be... well. Spoilers. But. I'm surprised to hear people don't feel the impact. It's one of the few stories where I think the book and movie are equally masterful.
Never Let Me Go is arguably my favourite book of all time but I had a feeling it wouldn't quite work for you! I was happy to hear your thoughts on it though.
I found that it took me a while to remember all the characters in the devil and the dark water. It also took me a while to get into but once I did I loved it.
I'm still shocked that I kind guess theme by the first post just because I sew this book in the Chanel of Megwithbooks and I thought you might love this book
Out by Nastsuo Kirino I think u would like. It’s about a group of ladies who do bad things to make money and they work in a factory and u learn about the factory life
The Devil & The Dark Water is an excellent book! [ The 71/2 Deaths Of Evelyn Hardcastle, by the same author, is even better! ] If you enjoy historical / vampire / mystery, then I recommend an old novel: Slave Of My Thirst, by Tom Holland. The beginning is good, the middle is interesting, but the last 100 pages is great!
If you want a romance recommendation which features a bit of insight into their work without being a workplace romance you should check out the Written in the Stars trilogy by Alexandria Bellefleur, two of the books are sapphic as well. In the first book one of the women works in Astrology and you get insight into her work, and in the second book the male lead owns a dating agency and you get loads of insight into his business!! Both really fun jobs and added an interesting element to the romance books.
Definitely going to check out The Cutting Season, I'd never heard of it and it sounds great! A book I'd strongly recommend based on what I see you read is GOOD NEIGHBORS by Sarah Langan. It's not *exactly* thriller or horror, it's one of those weird books that doesn't really fit a genre, which is usually the best kind! It's not aggressively weird though, just the right amount. I don't know what I'd compare it to, but I read it in between "Bunny" and "So Happy for You" and that was just a whole good time!
So glad you liked Nana because it was just such a FUN read for me. I listened to the audiobook which was fantastic. It was specifically an audiobook recommendation from Rachel with The Shades of Orange. It's not a surprising book but it did not disappoint and I liked that it had horror elements but also domestic thriller moments. But this is a book that when I've told people about it I always say the cover is so misleading 😅 I also listened to The Devil in the Dark Water and I was sooooo lost with all the characters. I stuck to audio because it's all my library had available but I do think it detracted from my experience (which is unfortunate because I do think the narrator did a good JOB it was just toooo many POVs). Also I think I could just be dumb but I swear even after I finished the book the the book summary is SO CONFUSING because there is a sentence that says "Travelling with him is his loyal bodyguard, Aren't Hayes, who is slaughtered" and I thought the entire first half of the book that Arent was supposed to die 💀🤦🏼♀️
Okaaaaay I will get pumped for House of Hunger, Woman in the Library was on my TBR already which is only why I was vying for it but guess I'll read both and that's totally fine! 😁
I also enjoyed Catherine House but disliked Never Let Me Go. It wasn’t bad per say, but I didn’t feel like the book did anything special or really add to the conversations that the themes were getting at. Like maybe it did at the time it was written, but having read it a couple years ago, I felt like the book said what I expected it to say when I figured out the plot twist. Catherine House however felt like a fresh take on the themes it was dealing with!
I can't imagine going into Never Let Me Go completely blind and liking it. I read it after searching for dystopian fiction that wasn't YA. I think that was enough information to know what to expect, without knowing exactly what to expect.
My mom literally just told me about the movie of Never Let Me Go, a few nights ago, & she LOVED it, she didn’t know it was originally a novel, so maybe the story comes across better as a screenplay than a novel
Perfect Days by Raphael Montes could be a cool pick for the book club! I don't know if you've read it (and if you'd like it 😅) but he's one of my favourite Brazilian authors! 😊
I feel like Last Night in SoHo (movie) is a good comp title for Catherine house! Just watched it last night and that’s all I could think about! edit: Less the plot and more the vibes- weird horror, questioning reality, kind of unhinged MC who isn’t *that* proactive, etc. Still takes place at a school but less dark academia than CH
I only finally read it 4 years ago! 😅 I'm truly committed to never watching an adaptation before reading the book. And after reading it..I just had no interest I guess 🫣
I also read Never Let Me Go and gave it 3 stars but I will say the images and themes have stayed with me a long time and so it’s moved up in my ranking over time
Just added The Cutting Season. Thanks for the recommendation! Also, I received my merch, and I cannot wait for the heat to chill (Ha!) to wear them. I'm glad House of Hunger won because I DNF'd The Woman in the Library. It's so boring!! So, thanks to my fellow club members for swaying the club to the truth, lol.
I didn't really care for Small Favors. I actually felt like we got too much of a reveal early on and then, after the fact, I realized all of that was in the synopsis (which I, thankfully, did not read beforehand). I would have liked more mystery on who/what was behind everything because it was creepier then. I really liked House of Salt and Sorrows so I think my expectations were too high going in. I loved The Devil on the Dark Water! I do think the reveal was a bit convoluted... but the whole process was creepy and I really didn't know what was really going on! That atmosphere was definitely amazing.
An idea for a vlog… go into a few libraries, ask the librarians their fave books and read them 😊
I hope she sees this comment!!! Such a good idea
I love this idea!

Oh my god! I had to read 'Never Let Me Go' in Highschool (i am from Germany) and we had to like analyse EVERY CHAPTER
Kayla, can I please get your recipe for the orzo dinner you made? Because I've been thinking about it since I watched this video!
the whiplash i got when you said 'i'm making my favourite dinner' and then said something other than asparagus pasta - i thought i knew you, kayla! 😂
are you telling me with your whole chest that you haven't seen pride and prejudice (2005)
I only finally read it 4 years ago! 😅 I'm truly committed to never watching an adaptation before reading the book. And after reading it..I just had no interest I guess 🫣
@@BooksandLala ok but i FEEL LIKE you would love it😤
@@daryanreads I'll have to think of some vlog to incorporate it into. 🧐✍️
I enjoy all of your vlogs but this theme was especially fun.🙂
I also read Never Let Me Go and gave it 3 stars but I will say the images and themes have stayed with me a long time and so it’s moved up in my ranking over time
Just added The Cutting Season. Thanks for the recommendation! Also, I received my merch, and I cannot wait for the heat to chill (Ha!) to wear them. I'm glad House of Hunger won because I DNF'd The Woman in the Library. It's so boring!! So, thanks to my fellow club members for swaying the club to the truth, lol.
Oh no, now I'm nervous. Never Let Me Go is up next on my September TBR. 😮😳🤞
That atmosphere was definitely amazing.
uhh love that selection of books! so excited!
