IMAGINE if you would have cancelled this video and THEN talked about it in a cancelled videos video and read the book from this video that was from the cancelled videos video, we would have been so deep into the lala lore haha
The Gargoyle has a cult following considering it a masterpiece. This author only wrote this book and lives in Canada. I was intrigued so I bought it. It is not about a gargoyle but a haunting story about a burn victim who is cared for by a stranger who claims she has gone through many past lives with him for 700 years! It is a great read so give it a try.
Kayla, the way you analyze things is amazing. I love watching you talk about how you come up with concepts. Also it was so fascinating to hear about how booktube has evolved over the years.
I can’t believe that so many guesses were right at the same time 😂 🤯 reading books based on your DNA test, cancelled videos, and booktuber favorites?! Plus more?!! My mind is simply blown
The ideal exemplary "Irish reading experience" would be, in my own opinion, Milkman by Anna Burns. The book is a hectic feminist stream of consciousness set during the troubles filled with the typical Irish bleak dark humour and I think you might actually love it. The Water Cure was objectively a bad book made worse by misleading marketing. I read loads of lit fiction and this book failed on every level from writing to characterisation, and I urge you not to belittle your insight as a voracious reader who has been reading across genres for a long time xx
I loved your Wordle video and it would be fun if you did it again! Maybe giving yourself more time to pick the books like you said? 💛 loved this video!!
I loved watching you read books by Irish authors/ about Ireland and I’m from Ireland myself! I’ve been wanting to recommend All The Bad Apples by Moira Fowley Doyle for years now. It’s a little dark and has a family curse, a little mystery, Irish history, it’s feminist. It’s fantastic and I think you could really like it so I’d love for you to check it out!!
YES all the bad apples is one of my all time favourite books!!! it's sadly so underrared. think Kayla could love the magical realism and all the other things you mentioned
You don't know how excited I was to see my comment shown on screen during the Irish books part! 😂 Funny that you mentioned Love Rosie/Where Rainbows End because Cecelia Ahern is also Irish!
I'm pretty sure that Senecal books don't translate good. Quebec writing style and conversation in french are so different than english. I read most of his books, My favorite being: ''Aliss'', ''Sur le seuil'' and ''5150 rue des ormes'' and I'm pretty sure none of them would be great in english. I don't know why they chose Seven days to be translated first... it's far away from the best one. Some of his books have also been made into movies. But, most of his stories are dark and can be gore. Sometimes I'm wondering about his sanity, lol!
My personnal favorite is Le Passager, but the twist is pretty predictable. I have to agree translating Senécal is probably not easy. Seven Days I liked, but def. not the best one.
I’m so glad you read the water cure because I always see it and it sounds right up my alley & I always almost pick it up but never do. Now I’m glad lol 😝
This got me interested to see how my DNA report had changed and it is amazing! Before it was Simply 80% British and 20% greater European. Now I've learned that I have a few ancestors from the same place that my own daughter ended up being born at. So cool!
Absolutely loved this video as always! Just love the way you talk about your reading experiences and how your channel has grown over the years (also your hair journey!! I always loved your hair but your hair now is so gorgeous!)
This is SO exciting, just did a huge library haul and now there’s an hour long Kayla video for me to relax with. Thank you as always for the amazing videos!
Amazing concept as always! I'm happy you said that you don't mind people taking your video ideas and making their own (with credit of course!) because I've definitely considered doing a zodiac sign one. That is if I ever make booktube videos lol.
Organically, a reading goal emerged at the start of the year to read an Irish author or Irish history each month, mainly inspired by my love of Colm Toibin. Part of this was reading a Sally Rooney, although I had no interest, but you can’t deny her importance in contemporary Irish literature. So I started hate reading Normal People and shockingly I really liked it and was impressed. What I most enjoyed was having two protagonists who were smart, maybe brilliant and how despite that they didn’t know themselves. I will say one of the most important books I’ve read since as I wanted to understand Irish history was We Don’t Know Ourselves, which doubles as a memoir with his life paralleling what went on during the second half of 20th century in Ireland and how it was dragged into the modern world. Im also excited to read Say Nothing, which has nothing less then stellar reviewers and love by readers and is by the same author as Empire of Pain.
It would be cool in my opinion if you selected a set of your older videos that you would make changes to and re-create them with the changes you mentioned, for example, the video where Rob buys your books or the DNA video.
Please watch the Normal People Hulu series, it's so good!! I feel like it did a better job depicting the difference in wealth and class between Marianne and connel then on page
If you want to read more Patrick Senecal books, I recommend "Sur le Seuil" it's about a psychologist who gets assigned to an author who cut off his fingers and "Le Passager" about a literature professor who picks up a hitchhiker after driving home late and picks him up every time thereafter. Not sur if there's an English translation for either of these books, but I remember the twist endings being really good.
Yay for Ireland! Not from Mayo but we usually leave out the County. Also I would give your pronunciation of towns and names about 6/10 (Eimear is pronounced E-mer)
Y'know what's so funny, I filmed this whole clip about how Irish names are never pronounced the way they look, but the audiobook pronounced it the way I pronounced it so I was so surprised I got it right. Come to find as I was editing, the author pronounces her name differently than the audiobook books does. Ridiculous that they couldn't get that right. 🙄
As someone who has read and watched Normal People, the series blows the book out of the water. It was fantastic. And the actors that play Connell and MaryAnn are perfect
Did you ever read The Lost Causes of Bleek Creek by Rhett and Link , I remember it was on your tbr at some point, I feel like it would be a hit or miss for you but I think it would be intereting to hear your opinion.
I have been curious to see how you would feel about Hollow Kingdom ever since I noticed it on your TBR shelf. Hollow Kingdom really didn't work for me. I read it as part of a book club and everyone else really enjoyed it and found it fun and funny and planned to read the sequel. I am glad you picked another book for that video selection that you did like, I've always thought of the Flatmate whenever you've talked about "righting your wrongs."
i was not expecting you to like normal people. i loved it but it know it’s not for everyone. i HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend watching the show it’s amazing and i loved it more than the book
I was just thinking the other day about how older booktube barely had reading vlogs! I love them a lot that it's strange to remember a time when they weren't commonplace lol
As a person from Québec, I enjoyed Patrick Sénécal's books when I was around 18/early 20s but honestly they really are not that great and often are just shocking without a purpose and kind of juvenile.
Lol i was in county Mayo, and we stayed in Ballina only like Feb '20! It was such a beautiful place and we made some really lovely mates who were still in contact with!
ZOMG. I love how you think about your videos in hindsight. I don’t even keep the footage… well loads was stolen when we burgled. I’m so haphazard. It’s made me want to both reflect and plot better. So thank you! I loved Normal People so much, the miscommunication was done brilliantly if that makes sense. I didn’t love The Water Cure either. It felt like a first draft. Ouch. I’ve always wanted to try Hollow Kingdom but somethings held me back.
I know that you've said you've lost interest in it, but I remember the series you did about reading your most anticipated books that you didn't get to, and I think you should pick up The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo. It's got that kind of atmospheric, claustrophobic writing and magical realism elements I think you would really enjoy despite the less than glowing reviews!
Also I want to add that I put your videos on so I can read with you in the background but I’m too invested in the videos that the book becomes the background 😂
Kayla I really appreciate your content ☺️ I rarely comment on your videos but I watch every one and am always happy when I see that you have uploaded something. So glad that you are on UA-cam 🥰
I read Seven Days in French and honestly, its one of my least favorite books of that author. It just left me bored and mildly angry. I prefer his more supernatural horror story Oniria or his edgy take on Alice in Wonderland which had fun in its outlandish ways. I loved that author as a teen (he is indeed very popular here in Quebec), but looking back theres a lot of fake-deep shit in his books, and a lot of sexual assault, and a lot of 'hUmAns bE BAd' themes, but not executed all that well. Im not surprised you didnt like this one, but Im not sure if Id recommend any other to you.
Omg I'm from Mayo!! I live there still, it's the second biggest county in Ireland but one of the most sparsely populated. It's a gorgeous county, so many great historic sites, you should come visit!! The film The Quiet Man was filmed in Cong, and Westport is probably the most popular and well known town, everyone loves it. It was so weird to see you scrolling through all these towns I'm familiar with. I'm so sad you didn't read any Moira Fowley Doyle, as some of her books are set in Mayo and they're exactly the type of books you'd like I think!! I especially recommend The Spellbook of the Lost and Found by her
I did the 23 and Me a while back too. (It was probably inspired by your video) I am 90.2% British & Irish. My top British location is the greater London, and my top Irish location is County Cork, but County Mayo is number 4 on that list.
I picked Normal People as my Book of the Month book back when it first came out. It was pitched as ‘an exquisite love story’. I ended up very disappointed by it, most likely because I’d had that expectation going into it. I do wonder if I were to reread it today knowing what it actually is if I would appreciate it more.
honestly I get so inspired watching your videos because your concepts are so creative and it makes me want to do them too but I never want to feel like I'm stealing your ideas lol
The first part of this is so interesting. I had to go back and see when I started doing reading vlogs because I honestly felt like yeah it was something relatively new for me too, but apparently my first reading vlog was in June of 2017, which is just WILD to me!
My mom’s family is from county Mayo too! We went a few years ago to visit their dairy farm. I’ve never wanted to read sally rooney before but maybe now I have to.
I found it very interesting that you talked about the dialogue in Irish novels because James Joyce, who is one of the most influential writers of the XX century, invented the stream of consciousness (one of his novels, Ulysses, actually reads very much like A girl is an half-formed thing, because it's meant to mirror the way we think "unconsciously", without rules of any sort). So yeah, I think you might be right on the money!!
Amazing vlog! 🙂 Seven days sounds a bit like the movie Prisoners. Which was a very good movie, so maybe check that out, if you haven't watched it. Definitely going to check out The chain. Was reluctant to read it, but you have convinced me
Love this concept and the length of the content 😍 Out of curiosity, what is the lipstick you're using whilst getting ready before Olivia's sprint? Love the colour!
First of all, as always, your videos are amazing. The concept, the editing, the content itself, this video was so good and I appreciate all the effort you put into it! Also, I LOVE A Heart in a Body in a World, it is one of my favorite books of all time, so I'm glad you have read it :)
I felt exactly the same about The Water Cure it was not what it was sold to me to be, and on top of that, if it wasn‘t for the name of the sister as the chapter title, I would have had no idea which one was which, they all had exactly the same voice. It‘s been 4 years since I read it and I still get annoyed every time I see the cover 😆
I love this. Especially loved seeing that you read Sally Rooney. (I really want to read one of her books, but I have a hell of a time with the way authors from the UK and Ireland use one quotation mark instead of two.) I also LOVE that you read a Sabrina book! I used to have one, don't think I ever read it, but I literally rewatch the last episode sometimes just for the serotonin of that last scene.
I mean that's not always true (idk what it depends on though, like the publisher or author or the font/typeface?? idk) but Sally Rooney doesn't use any anyway so that might annoy you less? or maybe even more 😭
i was so worried when i saw you were reading the water cure.....i read it a few years ago i think because i'd seen it on your tbr and Hated it. i'm glad i'm validated!!! i recently read her other book the blue ticket and didn't like that either although it *was* better. such a bummer because her concepts are interesting but the follow through.....smh
im not sure if you've read it, but know it was definitely on your list for a video and not picked, but the foxhole court! i dont think you'll necessarily love it but i really would love to see your reaction and commentary on it.
When I saw "The Gargoyle" I died laughing xD I bought it at the supermarket when I was around 12/13 yo because I liked the cover and read it and it was like my favorite book for a couple of years because it was such a weird book with a lot of "grown up" topics in it, and I reread it recently having forgotten all about it when I found it again in an old box and it was so not an appropriate book for me to have read at the time x')
IMAGINE if you would have cancelled this video and THEN talked about it in a cancelled videos video and read the book from this video that was from the cancelled videos video, we would have been so deep into the lala lore haha
💀💀💀
Book inception. 😂
Lol LALA LORE
LALA LORE!
oscar winning movie: lalalore
You liking normal people is the plot twist of the century for me right now and I am shook lol
Thisss!! I’m soo surprised.
It is a great read so give it a try.
i bought that book randomly when it came out, and i am STILL reccing it to anyone who will listen.
I completely agree with it! It's an absolutely underrated masterpiece!
Okay now I want to read it!
I just picked it up as a result of your comment! Sounds fascinating!
Agreed!
Kayla, the way you analyze things is amazing. I love watching you talk about how you come up with concepts.
Also it was so fascinating to hear about how booktube has evolved over the years.

Yes... Another wordle or Quordle octordle video
Can confirm, middle grade fantasy (I think Liam would enjoy) written by an Irish author - Skulduggery Pleasant - definitely has speech marks!
I love All The Bad Apples!
It's so good! Spellbook of the Lost and Found is unreal too!
Also The Call by Peadar O’guillin. It’s horror/ dystopian. It was a 5 stars read for me!
YES all the bad apples is one of my all time favourite books!!! it's sadly so underrared. think Kayla could love the magical realism and all the other things you mentioned
You don't know how excited I was to see my comment shown on screen during the Irish books part! 😂
Funny that you mentioned Love Rosie/Where Rainbows End because Cecelia Ahern is also Irish!
Such a fun video! I love the idea of righting your wrongs! I agree The Chain was so fun, but the ending let me down a bit
another iconic addition to the books and lala cinematic universe
omg love the little conglomerate of bunny books on the shelf
The pronunciation of Irish names and places made me chuckle hahaha some can be hard to pronounce 😅
I'm pretty sure that Senecal books don't translate good. Quebec writing style and conversation in french are so different than english. My personnal favorite is Le Passager, but the twist is pretty predictable. I have to agree translating Senécal is probably not easy. Seven Days I liked, but def. not the best one.
Honestly, if I had seen that cover of "The Man in the Maze," I would've picked it up too!
You know what could be really fun? If you let the hunger games simulator pick your tbr:) Also I loved this video!
“Reading comprehension who” 🤣🤣 I feel that sometimes lolol
I love watching people read when it’s sped up. The eyes just wiggle, it’s amusing
omg! The Chain was the only book from the 2019 video that I actually read so I remember hoping that you would pick it! This is so fun seeing it back!
I’m so glad you read the water cure because I always see it and it sounds right up my alley & I always almost pick it up but never do. Now I’m glad lol 😝
Your video concepts are my absolute favorite ones out there. 💖 I’m instantly pulled in every time!
This got me interested to see how my DNA report had changed and it is amazing! Before it was Simply 80% British and 20% greater European. Now I've learned that I have a few ancestors from the same place that my own daughter ended up being born at. So cool!

Always a good time for a feature length booksandlala video 💜
This is SO exciting, just did a huge library haul and now there’s an hour long Kayla video for me to relax with. Thank you as always for the amazing videos!
I also agree that your creative process is 5 stars.
Noone is quite like you and that is a very beautiful thing that I will never tire of watching.
as an irish person watching you pronounce the place names was so funny sorry 😭 mayo is a gorgeous county from the short time i’ve spent time there!!
Omg did you read The Gargoyle?? It’s one of my all time favourite books and I think you’d really like it
Amazing concept as always! I'm happy you said that you don't mind people taking your video ideas and making their own (with credit of course!) because I've definitely considered doing a zodiac sign one. That is if I ever make booktube videos lol.

genuinely the creative queen of booktube ur the besttttt
After receiving two lots of bad news this week this is just what I needed 💜 so thank you for posting this
Hope you are doing well❤️
@@annelarouche3536 aww thank you! I'm doing better now thanks. How you're doing well 🙂
I have been curious to see how you would feel about Hollow Kingdom ever since I noticed it on your TBR shelf. Hollow Kingdom really didn't work for me. I read it as part of a book club and everyone else really enjoyed it and found it fun and funny and planned to read the sequel. i was not expecting you to like normal people. i loved it but it know it’s not for everyone. i HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend watching the show it’s amazing and i loved it more than the book
Agreed! The tv show was fantastic.
i was literally just rewatching "reading books from canceled videos" video so this timing is too wild but i love it
also was fully expecting u to hate normal people since i saw it on your insta but im glad u didnt

That lake portion of the vlog looks so fun 🥺🌊
I know that you've said you've lost interest in it, but I remember the series you did about reading your most anticipated books that you didn't get to, and I think you should pick up The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo. honestly cried happy tears seeing this I just got home from a horrible shift, really needed this I'm so excited 💕💕
I really want you to read East Coast Girls. I read it because you’d mentioned it and now I just see it sitting on your TBR shelf in so many videos!
Your videos are the content version of a warm, fuzzy blanket
Wait! That book The Gargoyle is so so good! That is the book you should have read from that video!!!
It’s not fantasy. He is not an “actual” gargoyle.
i love that we can see the aftermath of an Instagram photo on your bookshelves lol
You seriously have the most creative ideas, I loved this video! Also, your hair looks amazing 🤩
Louise O'Neil is my favorite Irish author. I adore her writing style.
I’m so happy the chain showed up I was so bummed you didn’t get to read it in the Goodreads video
Would highly recommend the movie Wild Mountain Thyme for some hilarious Irish accents ☘️

Seven days sounds a bit like the movie Prisoners. Which was a very good movie, so maybe check that out, if you haven't watched it.

We had to read Hollow Kingdom for Battle of Books last year. It was a split section between people who loved it and people who HATED it. I hated it.

I enjoyed this blog. The books that ill read from it are: The Water Cure and The Chain
im not sure if you've read it, but know it was definitely on your list for a video and not picked, but the foxhole court! i dont think you'll necessarily love it but i really would love to see your reaction and commentary on it.
I had so much fun watching this video! Cool concept.
As soon as you said County Mayo, the first thing that came into my head was Sally Rooney. 😂 not gonna lie, I felt pretty chuffed 😆
I’m having the worst mental health right now, thank you for the distraction 💙
I’m sorry to hear that! I hope things get better ♥️
Sending you love 💕
Stay strong! U got this xx
I see Hide! I read that book in two days. Would have been one day if I had nothing else to do. Fun and kinda creepy book 👍🏻
Hmmm... an hour long video from Kayla or my final assignments due next week...
I think we all know what I'm picking :D
the gasp that left my body when i found out why you did a voting poll for sally rooney books.....
I genuinely love your channel so much!💟
I had no idea the chain was from 2019!!! 😱 idk why I thought it was newer 😂
