I've been stressing using a small stencil on a small topper crusted buttercream wedding cake. This is the easiest way I've seen so far and you've got my Vote!! Thank you so very much. God bless
You have done so well here. I've never done anything like this before and was looking at how I could help my daughter decorate biscuits for her market and this is so neat. Where baking was my passion I would absolutely subscribe. I think you have a lovely, approachable type of style, with a 'keeping it real' way about your presentation. You make a person feel that this skill is achievable without feeling overwhelmed or feeling like you can't do it. From a teacher of a different genre, well done to you.

vegetable shortening should be available at your supermarket next to the butter but you can also just use some non stick cooking spray or really just need something greasy to hold the plastic on the fondant.. you can use the gel direct on to the fondant or you can dilute with rose spirit which you can purchase from a cake decorating shop. Do not dilute with water it will become too runny...
I did try this n my cake it turned out amazing thanks to you i followed your video all the way and my cake was amazing i cant thankyou enough its so much better doing the stencils your way thankyou for an amazing video your the best xx

i like this video so much.. I am a new in this decoration..would you tell me what is the name of the paper or what ever it is that yoi use to get the mosture?
Hi Eka, i just placed some vegetable shortening in a bowl popped in the microwave so melted then brushed (massaged) it on the fondant so it becomes tacky so we have a "glue" to stick on the stencil...you can also just spray with some non stick cooking spray and pin the 2 ends of the stencil...
my pleasure :) keep me updated on how you go :) i used americolor navy blue...but theres royal blue, blue, they have so many gorgeous shades of blue and the quality is amazing...
I have never tried it with modelling chocolate but I can't see why it wouldn't work. maybe roll out a piece of modelling chocolate and try it...would love to know if it works :) I will also give it a try one day soon when i get the chance and let you know how I go :)
Love this method, hopefully as easy as it looks, going to try for blue and white chinaware pattern on fondant panels for planterbox method. Tried finding you on Facebook many diff Its A Piece of Cake pages, can you post direct link please? Instagram also?
Thank you so much for sharing. I will be doing a 3 tier cake and the first tier which is the largest i plan to stencil it. This base will be styrofoam. So would you advise me to follow that you have taught us on this video. Thank you for teaching us. It is very helpful for a cake (beginner) maker. Vanessa :)
+Ness Veron Cruz thank you. Vanessa yes absolutely follow this video! When I used to make cakes ALL my stencil work was like this. Your lucky that the bottom tier will be the stencil one. It means you can make it days (weeks) in advance! Been a wedding cake you should practise this method when you get the chance...youll be much more confident if you've tried it. Just practise on a small styrofoam. Let me know how you go :)
+Ness Veron Cruz my pleasure :) My cake decorating days are over so I just love teaching and sharing everything I have learnt on the way...and people like you that appreciates it is what keeps me going :) can't wait to see how you go :)
hi your cake decorating shop should have that stencil its a damask print. No i used the gel directly i didn't diluted it with anything.. you can add rose spirit to it which will make the gel dry quicker...
Oh WoW Rachel this looks Stunning! I don't have a cake decorating store where I live in Illinois, only craft stores (JoAnns & Hobby Lobby) would I be able to to find the stencil there? If not please send the link where I can find the stencil for my practice cake.. Thank you for the Awesome tutorial... I cannot wait to try this. I have NEVER worked with fondant before & would love to give it a try. This seems like it would be a good start. I was thinking about using a marshmallow fondant recipe bc I've heard that the original fondant taste horrible. What's your opinion on that? 😉
Hi Connie, you can purchase many beautiful stencils on eBay at very cheap prices. This designs is Damask. working with fondant is very similar to playdoh. My best advise is do not make your fondant if your recipe doesn't work perfectly then you will have a lot of problems with fondant. for example if theres too much sugar then your fondant will be hard and dry which will then give cracks and tough to work with. if theres too much marshmallows because you didn't knead enough then your fondant will be very sticky. So I would highly recommend you buy just a small package of fondant (if you have bakels where you are they are amazing fondant and very reasonable price...) practice with that. and just buy small different types of fondant and see what you like working with the most. I always used Bakels we get a 7 kilo tub for under $50 and no one ever complained about the taste and it was so so easy to work with..

sorry this is coming but i jst warched the video will this method work on using royal icing on the stencil i mean just robbing shortening on the iced cake and gently pressing without holding it with something like pin at edges?
hi i just found you channel in time lol my daughter is turning 16 soon and she wants tile stencil cake on fondant . could you please help me what is the best way for me .. some videos use royal icing i never seen one with gel colour .. any ideas you have will be great ty
hi to be honest both work perfectly fine...ive used royal icing plenty of times...for me i just prefer gel because its just much more quicker...what you should do is roll out a this piece of fondant and try my way with direct gel and see how you feel...practise a few times with the gel and then icing and see what you feel comfortable doing...the key with working with stencils is getting the stencil to grip firmly on your fondant then the rest comes easy...another thing to keep in mind is if you want your gel to dry quickly is add some rose spirit (your cake decorating shop should have it) it will dry the colour very fast aswell as give you an even colour throughout...
hi Leslie yes you can...just make sure you have the stencil fully covered with the shortening because if its missing a spot it will not "glue" on properly...
sorry just a question where did you find you stencil from i looked on ebay daughter wants tile but they only have small size 13cms. is that ok to do maybe on the front what do you think? thank you
ok go on google and search my dream cake its a cake decorating place here in melbourne but they do have a eBay store and send everywhere i purchased that stencil from there for approx $25-$30...but i just went on eBay right now and theres almost identical one for $4!!!!! :/ this is the exact title Damask Lace Border Cake Side Cupcake Stencil Sugarcraft Decoration Baking Tool as for the tile pattern I'm not sure exactly which one your daughter she's likes maybe if you send me a pic on lima3@live.com then i can see what i can do...as for 13cm by 13cm yes its very small which means you have to constantly remove and go around and that would be difficult. its so much easier to get one long one which are normally about 35cm...so it'd be done so much quicker and easier...
thanks you for sharing your ideas. i love your videos.... am just wondering, does the gel color dry up on fondant? I saw other videos use royal icing which dries up nicely. Thanks.
+Lyn Mac thank you so much :) once I've painted the gel i leave the stencil on for a couple of minutes (this is when the gel drys up) then i remove the stencil...but you can add some rose spirit and stir it with the gel then start painting...that drys up extremely fast...im actually in the process of making a video showing that method... :) :)
+mizz gee hi yes it does dry it forms a crust like covering...to test try it before doing it on your cake what you can do paint on some gel on a piece of fondant let it dry for couple hours then pat it with your fingers then you'll know what it'd be like...
Do you need to let the first stencil dry (both the stencil itself and the imprint on the cake) before moving on to the second section if you're going all the way around?
+Erin Thomas depending on your stencil if it has an extra tab on the side just cut that excess off then you can continue to go around the cake if it hasn't got that extra tab then your ready to go...that way you won't be touching the fresh gel....do you understand what I'm saying?
On a round cake like this, how do you get the next section of stencil to meet the one you've already done without messing up your work? It seems like you wouldn't be able to overlap the stencil on top of the existing design without ruining it. Thank you.
hi, if you stencil has a overlap tab you can cut it off that way the stencil can just line with were it has ended...or you could just let the gel completely dry then gently place the stencil and pin it place and continue..you should also watch this video ua-cam.com/video/b4qTHjpKswQ/v-deo.html I explain more throughly about the drying process. If you need the gel to dry quickly and very dry then I would recommend you dilute the gel with rose spirit gels drys up extremely fast and VERY dry...again if you watch that video Ive linked it'll explain more..
hi Rana thank you very much :) no i actually purchased this one from a cake decorating shop but I'm sure it'd be available online its called "damask" they're plenty beautiful designs in that range...
hi!!! this looks SO much easier and cheaper to make than sugarveil. I'm attempting to make a wedding cake with royal blue lace, basically it would look like yours. wondering if the color will run, melt or fade and what's the best way to store afterwards? room temp right?
Hi, yes it is defiantly so much easier and cheaper. No the gel will not run or melt if you make it atleast say 2 days in advance to give it more than enough time to fully dry. I would recommend you dilute the gel with rose spirit that way you will get a very even colour throughout and with the rose spirit the gels drys up extremely fast and VERY dry...because it is a wedding cake you should/must practise this technique on a piece of fondant just to experiment..have a falt piece of fondant spray with non stick cooking spray or use melted shortening attach the stencil and do half with direct gel and the other half diluted with rose spirit and let the gel dry and see what your comfortable with/prefer...also watch this video ua-cam.com/video/b4qTHjpKswQ/v-deo.html I talk more about the drying process...if you get the hand of stencils with gel you will never go back to any other method lol :P its just so simple....
thank you so much its all my pleasure :) :) if they don't have rose spirit ask what they have to dilute for example the gold dusts...alot of people use vodka (its evaporates) but either way your cake shop should have something...
hi again!! Sorry, I really need help with the same wedding cake. My shop doesnt have sugar roses in Royal Blue, so I tried a DIY using gumpaste and dye. I need lots of flowers, I'm REALLY struggling. Whats the best alternative? Could I just buy white roses and simply Paint them royal blue? will petal dust or gel paste be appropriate?? Thank you so so much.
Hi yes you can colour white flowers...you must dilute the gel with rose spirit or vodka (u have to dilute so when you paint on the flowers it drys fast and you can recoat if necessary). make sure your using a soft brush when painting on the gel mixture.. buy a blush brush you need a soft brush so it paints on smoothly and doesn't break the flowers...are you from Australia? and when is the wedding? depending when the wedding is a could probably do a tutorial on roses. I make them very easily and quickly.
hi I purchase my stencils either from art and craft stores or cake decorating shops (not online)...stencils are available in pretty much all cake decorating shops...
W00OOOoo000W That was easier than I thought it would be, thank you s000OOOO0oooo MUCH

Hi. I tried this and the gel did not dry. I used Wilton direct and didnt dilute it. It was extremely sticky and smudging! Any tips?
Lovely! Quick question, since this acts as a 'gel', I will smear it if I handle it right? Any tips as precaution?
Hi Tracey yes you can smear it if it hasn't had enough time to dry but if you add some rose spirit to your gel then it will dry a lot faster...
Thanks for the quick & AWESOME tutorial! Loved it!! it's exactly what I was looking for! ;-)
what about for dark chocolate modeling chocolate? would u still use shortening? are there other alternative methods of sticking the stencil on
I have never tried it with modelling chocolate but I can't see why it wouldn't work. maybe roll out a piece of modelling chocolate and try it...would love to know if it works :) I will also give it a try one day soon when i get the chance and let you know how I go :)

thank you very much
Can we do that on buttercream?
Hi, Can you use the stencil on SMBC? How long would you advise refrigerating the cake?
thank you for sharing
Does the shortening on the fondant effect the colour you paint?
+maz khatun no it won't. shortening is clear so once it drys your fondant will remain the colour it was and so will the gel.
can i do this on cream frosting?

Thank you for your response. I will try this method. Looks simpler than using royal icing :)
+Lyn Mac my pleasure :) yes its defiantly much easier than royal icing :P
+Lyn Mac I have just uploaded a new video (lv cupcake toppers) watch that when you get the chance i cover the gel and how it dries... :)
Thank you so much! Will do. :)
Can I ask does the gel dry eventually or is there chances of smudges later on
+mizz gee hi yes it does dry it forms a crust like covering...to test try it before doing it on your cake what you can do paint on some gel on a piece of fondant let it dry for couple hours then pat it with your fingers then you'll know what it'd be like...
+mizz gee i have just uploaded a new stencils video..watch that and I cover the gel in it...
How's the cake and cream so sturdy will the cream not melt??
Hi, that is not cream. The cake was covered in fondant.
Hi! What Is the vegetable shortening? Is it similar to butter?
no vegetable shortening is different...but use non stick cooking spray if you can't find vegetable shortening...
Its A Piece Of Cake thank youuu
So pretty. Where u find the stencils
I got the stencil from a cake decorating shop but eBay has plenty of them. just search for Damask stencil...
@@ItsAPieceOfCake Yassss Gurl. I already did last night. I'm new to fondant, thank you for showing this. Thank you
Fantastic Job!
+Bruce Andrews thank you :)
Amazingly beautiful
Thank you 😄
hi.. which color you used ??
Pls make a video on how we can use stencils on cream cake without sticking on d hand n spoiling smooth finishing
Is the 'gel' the same thing as the colour soft gel paste by Americolor, thanks
hi yes it is :)
What did you use to stick the stencil pattern was it shortening?
yes in was...
Great video.

Hi your work is so nice .can I ask you from where you bought the stancil and if it is online how ?
hi Rana thank you very much :) no i actually purchased this one from a cake decorating shop but I'm sure it'd be available online its called "damask" they're plenty beautiful designs in that range...
Its A Piece Of Cake thank you very much for your answer
Thank you. Really useful
hi!!! this looks SO much easier and cheaper to make than sugarveil.
I'll check if they sell rose spirit in our bakeshop. You've been most helpful, thank you very much for the infos and your videos! :D
thank you so much its all my pleasure :) :) if they don't have rose spirit ask what they have to dilute for example the gold dusts...alot of people use vodka (its evaporates) but either way your cake shop should have something...
I enjoyed the video! Thanks
Hi there where do U buy your stencils ? Can you please post the link
hi I purchase my stencils either from art and craft stores or cake decorating shops (not online)...stencils are available in pretty much all cake decorating shops...
Is it work on butter cream covered cake or only fondant?
Ive never tried it with buttercream so be honest I'm not sure. ..
Wow - Good. Thanks for Posting
