It almost feels like a practical joke when the waiters come and ask how the food is when you’ve just taken a bite and they do that almost without fail. My problem with that is two-fold: 1) You haven’t had enough time to judge the food yet; 2) and it’s awkward to talk when you’ve got food in your mouth. Great video as always.
It is very important to have proper table manners. Besides, I just had a British all day breakfast this afternoon. Not just being neat and tidy to place the utensils in place, but also properly place them when finishing it.
A very useful and complete lesson on Western table etiquette. Everyone in Taiwan just knows bit of this and bit of that, and some elders actually teach you the wrong Western table etiquette. Thank you.
Thank you for the video, this is really helpful. This is based on what I remembered. In Chinese culture, "jiggling your leg" is bad. People believe that there's gold on men's knee. So anything like jiggling and kneeling down should be avoided at most time because "jiggling and kneeling" symbolizes losing your riches (財運). In modern days, jiggling is still consider as "things only poor people do". Refer to "窮抖腳", and "男抖窮, 女抖賤, 樹抖死, 人抖窮"
In traditional Chinese culture, putting your chopsticks straight down in the rice is in the event of "祭祖“。Meaning that bowl of rice is for the passed away ancestors.
Reaching across the table! 😂 Been told off so many times before as a kid in both cultures. We call it 飛象過河。 Its a reference to the Chinese chess ( the piece equivalent to bishop) reaching across the whole chessboard) which is an illegal move. Got a smack on the back of the hand evertime i did it haha
I thought I was taught that if you have to leave the table for a while (for restroom or else) and you've not finished your dish yet, you can place your knife and fork on the dish crossed or in the positions of "4 o'clock and 8 o'clock" (like Chinese character "八") to signal that you'll come back and finish the dish, and the staffs shouldn't collect your plate.
I’m so glad to hear that it’s rude to put your phone on the table while eating, even if it’s between friends. In the US, this is definitely not the case. Maybe I’m a bit old fashioned but I personally find it rude.
Hi Susie, don't be snobbish lol I saw English people eat quite casually, but I totally agree with some of the rules, but nowadays they are quite relaxed, I always communicate with "foreign" friends about etiquette. Eat quietly definitely one of those, but in Asian culture, esp to show how nice the noodle is, you should slurp the noodles. I dated some girls, I have to say table manner definitely is not a problem in the relationship, both people can learn each other's culture, it's fun.
1. Everything you mentioned is fine for me, except I think it's absolutely fine to hold the bowl when I drink soup as you mentioned "highly inefficient" to drink it with a spoon with the bowl on the table...I think I should probably leave Europe...2. I think jiggling one's foot is fine as long as this doesn't directly impact another person, I hate it when people do this when we are sharing a same bench or for a show when they are sitting behind me with the foot touching the back of my seat. I encontered this situation quite often in continental Europe(never been to the UK). I am Chinese from China.
Western soups are usually thick and would be difficult to pour it from the bowl directly into mouth. Chinese soups are watery so it's a different kind of activity to eat the soup efficiently.
Hi Susie, thanks for sharing the video. Can I have a question please? Should I place knife with blade facing towards myself? I went for a quite formal dinner once and found many people placed their knives with blades facing outwards. I felt that was a bit odd.
Great topic as usual Susie. Talking while chewing is pretty gross which to me is the number one turnoff. Couple more (a) don’t slurp the soup and (b) always pass both the salt AND pepper together. And in a family style or pot luck setting, we always make sure no one wants that last piece of food before grabbing it.
Could you do more on the table manners on the placement of fork and spoon, like what you had mentioned, placement of both spoon and fork at 4 o'clock mean you have done on the meal, and crossing the fork and spoon/knife have other meaning as well.
Hi, Susie, I'm reading a book called Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English Behavior, by Kate Fox. This book is very inspiring and it shares many of your opinions, on English personality, English social rules, English humor, etc. I didn't know English people pay so much attention on social classes; it seems the entire society moves around the idea of acting one's class by avoid using certain words, choosing certain furnitures/cars/houses. I got lost on whether the author was just showing her humor, or perhaps she was stating the cruel facts on classes. Do people from high class discriminate the others? Do people from the lower classes try very hard to act like they are from a higher society?
Jiggling legs itself isn't rude imo, just a little distracting if done too often or for too long. Whether a person is rude or not depends on the full body language I guess. Sometimes, people are just anxious. Some don't even realize they do it. I know of people who frown upon it and there're also people who don't care at all. But it is definitely more of an undesirable habit, and if some kid is jiggling their legs, their parents are no doubt going to try and prevent that.
while the bill is brought to me, shall I stay at my seat or go to the cashier counter to pay if off ? always confuse 😱. Could you help advise ? Thank you
Appreciate your effort in making this video informative and educative as it has always been Jiggling, in my opinion, should be avoided as it might offend others
Jiggling leg is definitely rude in the old time in Asia. My parents snapped at us every time when they saw me or my brother doing that when we were much younger. Now I don't like people jiggling legs either.
I recall there's a Chinese-language book written by Hong Kong actress-turned-psychologist Josephine Siao on western etiquette, just wondering if Susie has read it before.
About jiggling your legs. There is a saying so you can see it is something you will get told off by others. p.s. this saying rhymes in Cantonese and not so much in Mandarin, so may not be generally known in Taiwan nor northern China
Jiggling your leg is a posture people behave when they are anxious or quite in a smug self-satisfication. The former shows their impatience with the companion, while the latter is in general not a pleased scene, and either way it doesn't show one's control on his or her behavior and emotion.
Not all Chinese have the same culture. South and north Chinese are different culture. Also all Chinese have their own local language. Even foods are big different. Old generation oversea Chinese are coming from Southern part of China. (Canton area) Most of them speaking Cantonese or Tao Shan. Chinese said jiggle your leg at the dinner table are not polite. Some old age Chinese said jiggle your leg mean your fortune will falling off follow your jiggle action. Haha funny right
Jiggling legs happens with young people much more and it's a subconscious movement. Sometimes someone commenting "you're jiggling your legs" is enough to get the person to stop. It's not rude but a bit unhealthy.
Jiggling one’s leg or tapping one’s foot is a no no - 樹搖葉落,人搖福薄!A jiggling tree shed its leaves. A jiggling person is void of his or her blessing in life.
In America forget about it.. we just use our fingers now. We grab tacos like the Mexicans, eat pizzas like the Italians, mix rice & naan like Indians ... The Queen is going to be so disappointed after two hundred some years... 😂😂
Thanks for good information. Can anyone tell me why I followed those etiquettes in an American restaurant, everyone looked at me like an idiot? And the staff refused to give me knives and forks! I swear I won't go to KFC anymore, their staff and customers are so strange.
In Chinese culture, same as slouching, jiggling is not allowed. In middle or upper class family, usually Mom will discipline her child who jiggling his/her legs.
About jiggling legs: I don't think it is necessarily perceived as rude in China or Hong Kong, not sure about Taiwan though. Historically it might have been unacceptable. Personally, I hate it. I never allow myself to do it. And when my partner does it, it bugs me a lot.
Jiggle can be seen as a weirded or rude behaviour but people around won’t voice out. However, people are very forgiving if it’s related to medical issue or psychological issue. From Hong Kong.

1:神、福、禍、祈禱、祈福、祝福、等等;
2:人、佛(教)、儒(教)、仙(道教的最高境界)、偶像、等等;

Jiggling leg is definitely rude in the old time in Asia. My parents snapped at us every time when they saw me or my brother doing that when we were much younger. Now I don't like people jiggling legs either.
thank you so much!

It's not rude but a bit unhealthy.
please adding English subtitles exactly what you say as previous video. tks

Jiggling is considered as being impolite in Hong Kong, although you would still find quite a few people jiggling in local eating places. 😂

In middle or upper class family, usually Mom will discipline her child who jiggling his/her legs.
some people say those who jiggle will eventaully shake away their weath

About jiggling legs: I don't think it is necessarily perceived as rude in China or Hong Kong, not sure about Taiwan though. Historically it might have been unacceptable. Personally, I hate it. I never allow myself to do it. And when my partner does it, it bugs me a lot.

One thing I can't stand is loud eating, but that's due to my own pathology of misophonia.
Jiggle can be seen as a weirded or rude behaviour but people around won’t voice out. However, people are very forgiving if it’s related to medical issue or psychological issue.
