Wow! I honestly haven't watched a more soothing movie explanation before. I definitely love this movie. It hurts me to think that it so underrated. Moreover, I too felt the same about the end about Kimberly lying and just wanted to affirm it while I came across this video. Yet haven't really thought about the concept of the comet. Such a lively interpretation with the background music, and soothing voice. Thank You so much for it 💜

Everyone fails to mention Kimberlys dialogue about Paintings and Timelessness. The way the movie is made is such that the scenes can be assembled in any order, and it would still carry the same emotional poignancy. It transcends the limits of time. This movie is a Painting. A literal masterpiece.

This is exactly it. You can see the entire canvas of their different parallel lives all painted in separate dimensions but in one beautiful masterpiece. The comet was simply the big bang of their relationship.

Comet is a movie that will forever stay with me, I watched during a specific time of my life, I fell in love with it knowing that it's not perfect, which also was the case in my relationship that I had later on.

I was part of a panel at an earlier showing of this film in Vancouver in May 2014. Sam Esmail introduced the movie & followed it up with a Q&A. Some important things I learned/were touched upon in the panel:
It’s important to note the beginning text - this takes place in a PARALLEL Universe. During the ending scene, the reason the apartment is almost half empty is because her “fiancé” is moving out. The ring is missing because she broke things off with him. The big LIE is the pregnancy (which many correctly deduced).
However, the ending is still ambiguous, as it shows 2 suns several times in the last scene placement: briefly as Dell is shown sitting at the dining room table describing the dream, the camera pans outside to show 2 Suns in an early evening/sundown placement in the sky. At the end on the rooftop as Dell is standing opposite Kim & the silence before credits rolls, 2 Suns are shown rising above the mountains.
Esmail stated the end is left to interpretation but pointed the above out during the Q&A in regards to the ending.
Another thing to note is that Dell misses the Comet passing originally, which is indicative of his first time around with Kim. But by the end of the movie, the 2 suns rising again - together in unison this time - is a slight nod that MAYBE this time around, they can finally be honest & give each other a real chance.

    DISAGREE.
While I love how you connected the word Comet to the character(to which I definitely agree) somehow I DISAGREE ABOUT YOUR CONCLUSION IN THE ENDING. YOU GUYS HAVE FOCUSED SOO MUCH ON KIM'S LIE THAT YOU ARE TOTALLY MISSING THE WHOLE PICTURE OF THE FILM. THERE IS MORE TO THE STORY THAN JUST KIM'S LIE!!! OR AESTHETIC!! JUST SO YOU ALL KNOW, THIS IS MY MOST FAVORITE FILM AND I'VE SEEN IT MORE THAN A MULTIPLE DOZEN TIMES. (NO KIDDING. I'M TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH IT) SO let me share ya'll my explanation.
HERE IS A CLEARER EXPLANATION OF THE ENTIRE FILM WITH VALID SCRIPT BASIS(you will get the ENTIRE film once you read this) :
    FIRST
Let me get this clear: this film is a film of Regret and longingness.
To understand the ending is to understand the whole movie. And that is that the whole film is an entire dream, made up of random real events in the Dell's life, plus the “apartment/balcony “scene that NEVER really happened.
If you think there is any other way/interpretation around it then clearly you DID NOT UNDERSTAND the most important setting of the movie which bluntly tells the viewers the film is but a longing dream: the apartment/balcony scene(the first scene and the last) .
To begin with, let's go back to the Hotel scene and take note of Kim’s question to Dell.
    First quote:
“Have you ever dreamnt about me?…like an ambiguous depiction of what we are or were or who we could be? “ - Kim
Clearly, at the time of the hotel scene, Dell, has never dreamnt of Kim (who he kept taking for granted) . Except when he finally understand what love is,that is where the dreaming begins which makes this movie... however unfortunate that everything is over and too late by the time he realized his love for her.
The whole movie was a flashback sort of dream about Dell’s relationship to Kim. All scenes did happen in reality except the apartment/ balcony scene. Remember their convo at the apartment?
    2nd quote:
“so I had a vivid dream the other night about us…it was dreams of memories. Conversations that we've had…memories of us over the years…they blended together like a…(painting?)…but they were all real but there is one moment in the dream that was…one we've never had…this moment that we're having right now…me, coming over to your apartment. “ - - - Dell
And it was, indeed a dream. That statement BLUNTLY tells us that this whole film was a dream of both reality and fiction brought about by regret. That explains the jumping and shaky scenes jumbled together; flashy transitions; KIM’S blurry and wordless thesis; the quick changing of setting from the apartment to the balcony in a nanosecond; the instant changing from day to Night time in a snap of a finger. The TWO suns(suns, which I will explain further later)
So what is the fiction part of the film?
the ending scene is the fiction part of the dream, (Apartment/balcony scene) . A fiction which tells us his desperate desire to turn thing all around. To get her back. It is not possible to get her back in reality so in his dream, he tries so hard to convince himself and kept repeating to himself that,
    3rd quote:
“this is not a dream. This is not a dream”
    -dell(first scene)
    4th quote:
"I wanted so hard to get back to my dream I had the other night. I try so hard to get back to sleep"
    --Dell(balcony scene)
Cuz in reality, Kim was indeed, pregnant. and she have already fallen in love with jack. the pregnancy shocked him but what hurt him was her, saying she love jack and will not leave him for him(Dell), as seen on his dismissive reply. he totally ignored what she said about jack and went on to comment about the pregnancy .
I know what some of ya'll are thinking. Maybe Kim was lying about the pregnancy to get back on him for the lie he told her in their first meeting? Because Dell is vulnerable at the moment?
Or maybe Dell really got hit by a car and died and everything was a play of what might have been?
    NOT.
First of all Dell did not die. Kim repeatedly pointed out to him during the hotel scene and the phone call scene that she saved him.
    5th Quote:
“I saved you. I knowingly saved you. “-kim
And we all understand by now that those events are part of his dreams that did happen in real life, right? (refer to 2nd quote) So he did not die.
the pregnancy: this one is very tricky and where the confusion to the story starts. Note that the whole apartment/balcony scene was all a dream. a sad wishful and longing dream of him, trying to get her back.(which 2nd quote CLEARLY STATED) .
Kim cannot Lie in a dream.
It is unknown to us what happened after their second break up but this "recurring" dream of Dell's gives us the glimpse of what had been.
Think about it: why would someone dream about a lie over and over again unless it is real? Lie does not makes sense at all and does not fit the picture.
dell said that he kept having this dream where he visits her to try to convince her to leave jack and be with him - -yes, that very moment.
A person would only dream about something over and over again if it is something he regrets in his reality.
And it is most likely that Kim did fell in love with Jack, got married to him and was pregnant to him in reality.
And so Dell was having this sad, longing dream of conversing with her over and over again. all because his time ran out. his”TIME-BASED” love. and he had wasted so much time looking for the perfect time, anxious of what might happen "5 MINUTES FROM NOW" , that he ended up losing her.
    6TH quote:
    "I miss things a lot" - - Dell(cemetery scene)
    Want more proof?
Dell said that his dreams would always end everytime he tries to kiss her. (again apartment/balcony scene)
the way the director cut the film right where he was about to come near her to " kiss" her was the director’s affirmation that the whole film really was all a drea
    (yes you can cry now.)
So the question is what about the “lie” part? Where does Kim’s lie took place then, if her pregnancy wasn't a lie?
The ending part is not to dignify the “lie” they are talking about at the cemetery. the lie part was Kim, cheating on him while Dell is in a vulnerable position to be cheated on.
    7th quote:
“that was your lie right? texting jack behind my back. it came when I least expected it. i fell for it hook and sinker.” - Dell(phone call scene)
    So what's the ending about?
It is to show Dell's growth in the film. that Dell finally learned how to love in the end. And what a beautiful night is. Feelings which he isnt sure of ,all throughout the movie. which is why he said in the end ,
    8th quote:
“you know, I cannot believe love is real”.
and he cant accept the fact that it was too late. which is why he said,
    9th quote:
“why does it feels so impossible to let you go?”
and so he kept having this dream on repeat over and over again. because to him, like he said,
    10th quote:
“ I feel like I’m in a wrong world.Because I donr belong in a world where I dont end up with you, i dont.there are parallel universes out there where this didnt happen. where i was with you and you were with me. and whatever universes that is, that’s the one where my heart lives in.”
that explains the parallel sun. in his dream, kim belongs to a world where they did not end up for each other. and he belongs to a world he believe they ended up together. the universe where his heart insistently lives.
and then he tried to kiss her but woke up from the dream. like he always did, each and every longing dream.and so he wakes up everyday with regret only to return to bed at night hoping that each dream of her is not a dream. thats what made this movie sad ,painful and relatable.
In the end, the video is right about Kim, being Dell's comet. And Kim is a once in a life time comet he missed. Similar to how he missed the meteor shower in the film.
I hope I helped you understand most of the film's part.

Yea, that's a better explanation, but it still feels incomplete.
What about the parallel universes' thing? It isn't equal to the "pararelity" of the 2 suns. It seems like author is leaving us a room for interpretation, whether what is true or not.
Though I'm not sure, I guess I need to rewatch in one more time.

    • @BehindTheSc3nes
      @BehindTheSc3nes Рік тому +1

@@arturarasniewicz I've already explained the parallel universes (represented by the parallel sun)
PLEASE refer to the 10th quote.
Kim belongs to a place where they don't end up with each other. Meanwhile, Dell, out of denial, belongs in a world where they are together.
That script plays a heavy role in this movie.
also, Do not forget that this whole movie is a dream.

    • @arturarasniewicz
      @arturarasniewicz Рік тому +2

@@BehindTheSc3nes Parallel universes explain the existence of 2 stars (in one "other"/alternative universe), but this does not work the other way. They appear only in the last Kim and Dell meeting, so the one that suppose to have never happened. Why this couldn't be the alt universe? There is no clear explanation for "the following events take place over six years, a few parallel universes over". Yours is just interpretation, which here particularly feels forced to me (because it basically says that parallel universes were only dream reality (Kim) and in it "denial reality" (Dell). And these two realities contradict mostly only in the last meeting when she rejects going back to him.

This became my favorite movie when I watched it, dethroning Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I agree with the ending but I also believe that when he told her he had a dream that ended when he went to kiss her, and that's how the movie ends, it suggests that that part of the movie was in fact a dream, and indeed it does have several elements that strengthen that theory. And it means that if that's a dream, they're probably together.
Another thing I love is when she says that a painting is the only art form that it's not time based. No beginning, no middle, no end. You see what you want to see, when you want to see it. And I think this movie is that exact metaphor. Such a work of art, different colors, different strokes.
I actually came to UA-cam looking for that clip and I found your video, which I loved, thanks!
