    Freedom is a good word for enthusiasts of the brand as well. One can wear a Grand Seiko largely without fear of being followed or robbed. I hope GS remains relatively obscure to the mainstream.

    Not sure if I subscribe to the thoughts and opinions of this particular take on skyflake.
    The dial is a unique experience in different lights: an off-white, to a sort of light grey, to different shades of light blue. It is a paradox of simple and clean but can be breathtaking. If you are lucky enough to have it catch your eye, you'll be drawn in by its exquisite sharp polish and balanced tones.

    I have been very lucky to have some amazing timepieces in my collection. I got to visit Japan, and explored Grand Seiko boutiques. They're just in a class of their own, especially now with their Singapore expansion. Their boutiques, the staff, the incredible knowledge and respect - it's amazing how much work they put into their watches. I bought a GS 44 Tribute JDM Limited Edition, it has this amazing Twilight Mt Iwate dial. I'm planning to visit again, because I'm just in love with Grand Seiko. There is more to their collection than just the Spring Drive. I love the Hi-Beat, absolutely stunning timepieces.

      Totally agree! Was looking to get a rolex as my first luxury watch and I got a lot of snobbery that I need to buy some jewelry first! I was pissed and angry but now I am glad thats the treatment I got because it pushed me to look for alternatives and thats where my love affair with Grand Seiko begun! Thank you Rolex because I will never buy an overpriced tool watch when I can get a Grand Seiko with better finishing and quality at a fraction of the price! Cant wait to expand my Grand Seiko collection in the future!

      @@vktravellog1242 Glad to hear about your experience. I think my experience maybe also might've been due to the culture in the countries - but both Japan and Malaysia have spectacular service. The boutique staff are very humble, they served us tea when we arrived and let me try on the Limited Edition 44GS Tribute Model. Their approach is more to let you experience the watches, and they don't push for a sale. The watch I bought is a Limited Edition and since I was travelling internationally, I didn't have the funds ready in my account - so I asked if they would like a deposit to hold it for me, and the sales rep said they would hold it regardless of a deposit and didn't ask me for anything. When we went to receive my watch, they gifted us a Travel case (for me and my gf), A storage Box for two watches, and a Grand Seiko Pen. One thing to note, you might already know about this, Grand Seiko has a club called the "GS9" club - the boutique where you bought your watch from will have a local one associated with them. Be sure to sign up there as they send you gifts and invite you to their events. Enjoy your timepiece and Take care.

    I'm a bit on the fence on this review, there's nothing 'ordinary' about the GS Skyflake. You can literally tell the amount of manual labor that goes into a GS, compared to say, a machine made Rolex with its crude dial and detailing. Even it's price (and value for money) is extraordinary, for this type of watch. Yes, I'm a GS enthousiast ;-)

      I love my Skyflake. It's my first and only Grand Seiko. Next I am considering getting the Cherry Blossom (SBGA413). Since you're a GS enthusiast, I want to ask you, which models are your favorite?

  • @balesjo
    @balesjo 2 роки тому +9

    Under magnification, you can certainly tell any blemishes in the finishing, even in the ultra-luxury brands. But looking at this GS under high magnification, the finishing is impeccable. If you look very closely at the beveling, the hands, the indices, every edge is extremely sharp and polished. And watching the blued second hand's smooth movement around the dial is hypnotizing. My only gripe is the charge meter's location on the face of the dial. It throws off the balance. But I'd definitely not turn down this watch if someone were giving it to me as a gift as overall it is a beauty with an air of simplicity.

    I picked up a Skyflake and haven't looked back. The Snowflake was amazing, but this was the Godfather II of watches; the sequel that added to the greatness of the original. The blue dial and leather strap evoked the Snowflake while transitioning it to a dress watch.
    Despite all the new models that have come out since, this remains my favorite GS.
    BTW this channel was one of the sources that convinced me go for the Skyflake so thank you so much for that.

      I have a Skyflake and what I love is how it works on so many straps .Of course the OEM leather but with its 100 WR also on a rubber tropic strap, nato, custom leather strap, and an OEM bracelet. And each time it takes on a different personality and the drilled lugs make changes a snap.

    Same goes for these videos, they have graced the path of UA-cam for roughly halve a decade. They may not be a jaw-dropping, hot-burning novelty every time , though they pose a home for something much more precious: a welcomed, short relaxing refuge from the busy world. Just like the nonchalant sweep of a Spring Drive. Alongside with world class eye candy.
    Though seemingly at rest all the time, a keen view reveals how the chefs of this production evolve their few, key ingredients, to evermore perfect their dish of perfectly served videos.
    4:09-4:38 perfectly embrace the aforementioned evolution.

    When I went in to look at the Snowflake expecting to be wowed, I have to say, I was underwhelmed. Likewise the Skyflake. The watch that grabbed me and wouldn't let go was the Shunbun. It has become my favorite and most worn watch for going on two years now. I get that the is is snowflake is an icon, and I imagine it will always an a centerpiece of their collection. Lots of their other watches have gotten lots of attention, but it's still the watch that put Grand Seiko on the map, and none have replaced it as the watch the brand is identified with, and I respect it for that. When I go into watch shops that don't stock Grand Seiko wearing my Shunbun, the sales people often ask me, is that a Snowflake?

    • @sleepdeprived9181
      @sleepdeprived9181 2 роки тому +1

      likewise, snowflakes is underwhelming when put beside shunbun. Thing is, Shunbun might be too flashy for some people's taste and/or associate pink hue as feminine. I just happened to be a female, so I am really happy with the Shunbun. Next to Shunbun is Shosho and Omiwatari in my books.

      I get that but I think the great thing about Grand Seiko is that they have so many great dials that you will always find a watch that sings to your heart in their range. I sat in a GS AD and looked at about 15 watches ranging from the basic steel to high end Evolution 9 watches and it was the Snowflake that I kept looking at coming back to and felt the best on my wrist. But every single watch was beautiful and would be a proud addition to any collection.

However, when we have the time to examine it at leisure, and in greater depth, it would be then that we discover all the hidden details and appreciate it even more.

    A beautiful watch with a few features that continue to make it pedestrian as higher horology. Traditional collectors do not clammer over the Springdrive technology. It is innovative but lacks je ne sais quio. Also, Grand Seiko insists on a date wheel for every model makes it an ugly duckling. And finally, a recurring manual wound model in the line I believe, would make the brand more respected.

    I have the exact model and might not be GS best and most famous watch. But in someone's famous words "I likes what I likes"

    I would trade my firstborn (if I have one) for a GS spring drive.

    To say this dial and spring drive are ordinary is pretty rich ;)

    The Spring Drive is so brilliant and beautiful! Except for the damn distraction of the power gauge thing: it's large and ugly, and unnecessary on an automatic. Its position is distinctly unsettling, appearing often to be an extention of one of the hands. What were they thinking of?

      Hot take - I like the power reserve indicator, even if the exact placement could use some work.

      Another hot take. I love both placement and the indicator. If you don’t like it maybe neither flakes are for you. The new spring drive “birches” have moved the offending indicator to the back.

    At this point I reckon the watch maker at GS lab must be either OCD or insane.Try to find a imperfect in the close up view but nada only stunning dial,hand & indices.

    …getting a little too prosey ? …i have the SBGR261, auto 3-hand with date but without underwhelming snowflake dial and expensive-at-what- real-benefit? spring-drive…in my view GS does simple elegance best…the huge gmt’s are off-the-macho-deep-end and some of their engineering, while artful and interesting, hold no practical time-telling advantage…

      several points. 1. The SBGR 261 is a nice watch. 2. look up confirmation bias and see your reflection. 3. As we all have mini computers in our pockets with +/- 0 seconds accuracy a day, a mechanical wristwatch of any kind , including yours, serves no practical purpose besides having something nice on the wrist and GS like all watch brands understands everyone has a different opinion of what is nice 4. No need to raise yourself by lowering others.

      …not sure how/when/why a critique of a commercial product became misunderstood as a criticizing of other people ? And the narrator is getting a little prosey.

    One mistake, talking hands. This case is quite traditional and certainly NOT inspired in the 44GS, which is annything but.
