Coilover mounts in under 15 minutes... (of video!) [Super DUkota pt. 8]

- We're back! This episode gives a general how-to for building coilover mounts for a solid axle swap. Shocks I have here are Fox 2.0 coilovers with remote reservoirs.
We are starting with bare frame rails- see previous build episodes for how I cleaned off and modified the frame of our 2002 Dodge Dakota SLT 5.9L 4x4. You can also see how I swapped in the Super Duty Dana 60 front and Sterling 10.5 rear.
From there, we make some frame mounting points for our coilover hoops, and then make the hoops themselves once we figure out our clearances and measurements. I am using the Rogue Fab M600 in this video.
With the hoops made, we needed to get them placed in a way that the shocks and the hoops avoid tire contact. This took a lot more time than it shows in the video because I had to articulate the axle fully on both sides with the tire tucked completely on one side and drooped on the other side, as well as with the steering cycled both ways to verify everything would clear in all situations. For my mockup stage, I removed the gas charge from the shock so it could be cycled by hand without needing the weight of the vehicle to compress it.
After tacking the hoops in, I made a cross bar that would strengthen the hoops and prevent them from moving under the weight of the truck. After getting the tube mounted between the hoops, I cut out the center section. This allowed me to weld some flanges in to make the cross bar removable. This was mainly for access to the engine and would allow for it's removal if ever necessary.
We then figured out our shock mounting points. I could have just used some universal shock tabs but they didn't quite fit the way I wanted. Instead, I used a scrap piece of steel from my time as a Ruffstuff specialties employee and used that for a much more interesting (and complicated) shock mount. Turned out cool though!
Lastly, we mounted our coilover reservoirs and did all the finish welding. This truck is finally back on it's own weight!

Cant wait for the new videos. This is an awesome project. Youve got my subscription
I appreciate the support!! Don't worry- there's tons more to come hahha
you can print off a pattern for notching tube that I love to use I cut them from a sheet of thin pvc from hobby lobby to make a permanent pattern..... like the videos I am currently doing a solid axle swap on an 03 suburban and your fab videos help me to get motivated!
Great tip! Thanks for the good words. Comments like yours help me get motivated to make more videos so the feeling is mutual haha. Sounds like a sweet build- good luck with it!
When are you making more videos of this rig? Would be awesome to see it going
More videos are coming soon! Wife and I had our second daughter back in October so It's been lots of family time but I'm getting back into the groove 👍 if you have IG I'm on there as webwheeler, and it's more up to date haha. Thanks for watching!
@@WebWheeler well congrats on the baby. I just had my second son a week ago lol. I like to live vicariously through other people. My current job requires me to leave the country every other year so, so my projects are always on standby
Cant wait to see this done
I'm driving it around these days- just gotta get my nose to the grindstone with editing! Haha thanks for watching 👍
Pretty cool channel to stumble upon, you have another video coming soon?
Thanks man! Glad you enjoy it. I have plenty more videos coming but it'll be a few months- I'm finishing up some details on the Dakota build then I'll focus on editing and try to release a new one every few weeks or so. Thanks for the support!
👌 *Video yang asik untuk ditonton, menikmati setiap prosesnya. Jangan berhenti, lanjutkan berkarya..*
This is super cool
Thanks for watching! More videos on this thing coming very soon 👍
So you’re telling me you can TIG weld? Jkjk great work and vid - once I learn I’ll have to do this to mine
I can attempt it at least 😜 thanks for watching!
I have a 94 I'm working on doing a dana 44 swap. You have been the only series that has really been an asset as I have almost no knowledge resources for my project. Thank you for doing this. Mine should be up and running hopefully in the next week or two.
Thanks for the good words! I really appreciate it 👍 you're quicker than me! Lol I have more episodes coming though. Congrats on the build and thanks for watching!
Great to see some progress on the Dakota !! I still have some work to get done on my Ram 1500 Superduty axle swap before it’s trail-worthy , but it turned out pretty decent and I drive it enough to keep the batteries charged . Keep up the good work
Thanks! Yeah that's basically what I'm doing with this thing at the moment haha. Gotta get some other little details hammered out but then it'll ready to party. I've done some little shakedown runs and those are the little wins that keep me motivated haha
Bro I'm loving the build would've loved to do something like this with my old 02 v6 dakota
Thanks man! Dakota's are awesome in general- too bad they have such lacking aftermarket support
is this beast ready now?
It is! I've actually been driving it around quite a bit and working on finishing up some little projects on it. I'm going to start uploading again soon and try to upload monthly after that. UA-cam doesn't like the one or two videos a year schedule haha 😜
@@WebWheeler how is it on and off road?
I've been babying it a little off-road as I work through making sure everything is functioning right but it's tons of fun and on-road it handles awesome- way better than I expected! I filmed the first test drive and that will be my second video to come out once I start uploading again 👍 thanks for the interest! It really helps keep my motivation in making more videos
@@WebWheeler ican wait for your videos, keep walking.
PLEASE COME BACK
I'm not gone! Haha I will be uploading more videos soon. I've been filming and finishing up a bunch of little stuff on the truck, not to mention having a second kid back in October. Just not enough time in the day to do any editing at the moment haha. Stay tuned and thanks for the support! 👍
@@WebWheeler congratulations for rhe new life!. And a big thank you for the knowledge you are sharing!.
