- Hey Fellas,
In this video I go over how I setup the springs on my shocks for Wratchet. Not overly complicated, but thought it might help some people set things up the right way.

Excellent Info! Every track and car will have a different preference. Especially for a Hobby Car. I just changed the valving on my Fox reservoir rear shocks and it made a big difference. Can't wait to test it out. Found some new trails 125 miles North West of home. I think you will like them. Not a track environment but should be great when the fall colors start changing. Hope you can join me sometime. Get er Done!!!!

Good video. Invest in thrust bearings ether the Delrin, or the roller bearings between the springs and the stops. I like them.

Hey Doug, good vid as usual.
Have you ever set up rear coilovers on a Baja bug with stock type one style rear trailing arms. Just wondering ballpark spring rates for a 12” travel fox res shock. Thanks.
When I had Mauler set up as trailing arm I had 14" shocks on it. It had a 14"x275 on top and a 14"x300 on bottom.
I was under the impression that since the top spring is lighter then the bottom, you would set your crossover rings based off off the top spring coil binding. So in this case the bottom of the preload ring and the top of the spring divider would measure 3.25”. Granted whenever you change your preload you would need to move your crossovers with it, so I’m not exactly sure if I’ve been doing it wrong.
So the difference is the way I did it I'm maximizing the lower spring. The way you're doing it you're maximizing the upper spring. Just personal preference. Only difference is you have to make adjustments if you change the preload. My way is more tailored to lazy people. 😁😉
I would probably set the gap under your 3.66” instead of rounding up. I would rather bottom out the spring than the internal valves. Or do the bushings on the shaft stop it before that point?
@@Tommy-B. Well in order for the shock to bottom out this far my bumpstop would have already failed. But if it does I'd rather let the shock bottom out all the way without binding the springs. There is a rubber stopper on the shaft that would crush and put the force into the shock housing. I guess that would be the best scenario.
Mike, May be I'm confused. What was the reason why you installed the heavier spring at the bottom. I thought that if you install the weaker spring in the bottom, you have a softer ride specially in the whoopies and as the springs compresses it gets harder until the bump stops applied.
It can go either way. But whatever spring is on bottom is the spring you're tuning.
With the soft spring on bottom you would need to fully crush it before getting full advantage of the heavier spring. It might take 3/4 of your travel before you fully crush the softer spring. And then the slider isn't really doing much.
With the lighter spring on top you can adjust the slider to cut the top spring out much sooner and benefit from the stronger spring.
When the springs are stacked, soft on top or bottom the spring rate is the same. Things only change when a spring is fully crushed, or engages the slider. Then you get the spring rate of the bottom spring. Whether it be soft or strong.
So you're not wrong as it can be done any way you want. But this is why I did it the way I do. ✌

I would think your buggy is more like Mauler, he uses 2" body shocks. I have 10" travel in front and 12" in rear. But you'll need to dry cycle your suspension up and down to see how much travel you'll need. And add a little extra at the ends too.
@@DougBugBuilder how about the weight to chose the strenght of the 2 coils?
@@ciobanuvalentinmail I can't tell you exactly as I don't know your weight or the ratio of your suspension. But I can tell you Mauler has 100/250 in the front and 275/300 in the front. I think your Baja is a bit lighter, but hopefully this is something to get you started.
