There are toilet seats with a smaller seat that flips down for the smaller buts of the little kids. This would be ideal for the cats leaving a much smaller hole ergo less chance of falling in. You just leave that seat down when you are not using it.
That is a really good idea if you start them on that seat. Switching later is not a a good idea though.
never start with a young kitten. They CAN fall in and if they do, they WILL drown. The instructions usually say 3 months or older. I would wait longer. I just taught a 3 yo and an 18 mo to use it.
@@MrPoga5 switching later works fine, You just need to make it more appealing. I did this by putting their favorite litter on the toilet system and one they aren't crazy about in the standard box

Managed to train my female, 8 y/o cat, without too many treats and the clicker, just by installing the litter tray and blocking entrance to the litter box. Then, week by week, I enlarged the "hole". It is true that she was spooked at times, but overall it went well. Now, getting her to flush is a different matter, and it's probably going to take a clicker and some treats. This video provides a good explanation!

The automatic flusher is a great idea! We may have to get Mau to do this! This is an excellent tutorial for toilet training. Cutting the final ring seems like a great idea, and Mau probably would have enjoyed this much more although she has the most struggle during the second-to-last ring. Thanks for sharing! ☮
There's also the alternative of getting a child's toilet seat, so they have a much easier time balancing while still having a full toilet experience. They make ones that attach to the regular toilet seat, so it's not any more inconvenient to put up.

How do you get your cat to squat on the toilet? We have a little kitten (10 weeks) and he already loves the toilet but wants to go inside - he already fell in twice (don't worry it was clean lol) and will try to bat at the water unless we leave the lid closed. We want to start him off young because he's so curious and open to trying stuff.

Wow, I wish I'd found your video before I started! You had some great tips. Going slowly is definitely the way to go. My cats (two 11 year olds) are on the last two rings of the CitiKitty now. One of the cats gets very upset if too much of a ring disappears at once, so I cut it away gradually. He does seem to like the lack of smell compared to the litterbox, though.

The reduced smell is a big motivator for one of mine too.
With a sensor-triggered auto-flushing device such as FlushMinder, the flushing part doesn't require any training.
My kitty runs in every time and jumps up in the lidded trash can to watch me potty then watch the flush. She watches untill the water stops trickling.
I think she is prime for potty training in the toilet.

I used a baby toilet ring to make the hole smaller for my cat made her feel safer and made her squat stance more stable. She used it reliably after that one concession on my part. I also had stairs up to the toilet when she got old.
I've wondered about when they get old. Because they are less stable, unless they are very healthy, I'd switch them back to a standard box.You don't want to risk their falling in and getting chilled or unable to get out by themselves. I've modified a box so my very arthritic cat could walk into without trying to step over the edge.
Learned a lot! Will definitely keep this in mind if and when I get my own kitty.
Getting my cats onto the toilet bowl would have been easy, they were always drinking out of it.
Too bad I'm at school all day and my cat sits outside all day...he barely even uses his litter box, opting to pee in the bushes :/

My cat was doing fine jumping up on the toilet seat and using the potty training kit until I cut out the second whole, after that he discovered, he can poop on the floor and never used the toilet trainer again. I show him the trainer every morning, show him the reward that his been getting the last 3 weeks for potting in the trainer but he still refuses to go there. I gave him extra time before I cut out the second whole and he still refuses to use the kitty potty training seat.
I think, I am going to go back to the basics and start using his old cat litter instead of the flushable cat litter and will put the trainer on the floor until he start using it again and work my way up from there.

Yes, some will. Others will be afraid. I had a cat we called The Plumber because he would sit for hours trying to flush (it's usually too hard for a cat's strength) and whenever he succeeded he ran as if he had played Dong Dong Ditch. Then he'd go do it again. We could not teach him to use the toilet because he'd fish in any body of water.

Great video... getting a cat soon, and do not want to use litter again. Looked up the toilet flushing sensor on amazon... 244 dollars! I know there will be tons (literally) of savings over the years, but that is a bit of an "ouch" to start off with. Any other suggestions?

DragoDino It was in-between 1 and 2 hundred dollars. Not cheap by any means and I'm sure there are cheaper ones out there. It isn't the city kitty branded one, I think it is rubbermaid. It has worked really great for us. As an added bonus you can wave your hand like a Jedi to flush after you go

I need help! Took litter box away a week ago. Training two kittens-one has pee'd in tub and on bed, I think 2 days ago. No other accidents since? Seems to be getting a little more comfortable since I've removed the first small opening. Should I revert back to no openings?

So the clicker, was this just to get him to get up on the toilet (and to use the autoflush)? I'm not seeing where this came into play with actually using the toilet
It’s a training technique. You want your cat to understand when they have done something correctly so hopefully they do more of it. If they associate getting a treat when they hear the click, they will try to do the action that activates the click more often.
Thanks for sharing, this was great! I'm considering trying to teach my 12 year old cat. I'm concerned that he's too old. Do you have any suggestions or anyone else? He's still a pretty sharp cat I just don't know how well he'll adjust
+Marissa Chavez If he is an indoor cat I think he'll have a chance if you have the patience. Just find the treat that he is willing to work for, use the clicker and go really slow with him through each step. Try using the clicker training to train him to do something else first so he understands the concept.

Hi, thanks for sharing. My cat is fully toilet trained (used the Litter Kwitter but no clicker, just treats, tone of voice and petting). I was concerned that he might not understand that flushing is a part of "using" the toilet. I thought he might learn to flush and expect a reward each time. Does yours flush by himself without the need for rewards? Is it an automatic part of the process?
khantiffany He flushes by himself but if I am home he comes and finds me after he goes and waits until I follow him into the bathroom before he flushes to get a treat.

I'm doing step 4 for the second time ... it happens that when my cat sees that the sand is dirty, with only one or two pees, he makes the poop on the floor ... when I'm home, do not let one minute sand dirty ... but when I'm not is very complicated! Toilet training a cat is hard. I think that some cats just won't do it, while some cats just start doing it with no training at all. Every cat is different, it's important to not make them uncomfortable. If your cat goes on the floor when the sand is dirty, my only suggestion is to try more sand up top. I've been training my cats for 2 weeks they get onto the toilet happily but won't pee in it
What other options are you giving them? I presume they're still using the box? DON'T remove it ( biggest mistake most people make and most kits advise it). Switch litter brands so that your cat's familiar brand is in the toilet ring and the new less preferable one is in the standard box.

Liliana Cruz I would recommend litter box training first. Once they are litter box trained just have the litter box in the bathroom with the citi kitty set up and wait for your cat to try the citi kitty. Your cat will let you know when it's ready to try it by leaving you a present up there. I recommend waiting two weeks before changing any part of its routine, if not longer.

If my cat is already comfortable with being on the toilet, including sitting on the seat like Leo, lol, would it be safe to skip straight to litter box placement? His current box is already directly next to the toilet.
I've read a lot of reviews and the two biggest mistakes people make is trying to rush it ( never skip steps) and taking away the litter box (great way to UN litter train your cat).
So, does he flush by himself when you're not around, or only to get a treat when you're there?

Where did you get the flusher
I've read that teaching your cat to flush the toilet leads them to continuously flush it for amusement. Did this at any point happen with Leo and if not how exactly did you avoid this issue? I'd really love to teach my cat, but I'm afraid of the water bill increasing.
ashrockets21 Leo did not flush for his amusement too much. The best way to avoid it is to totally ignore them when they flush but haven't gone yet. Then give them lots of attention when they flush after they have gone. Limiting the flush training to only ever rewarding them for flushing after they have gone potty, even from the beginning, may take longer to train but you will probably have less fooling around flushes

Before teaching your cat to use the toilets, you should know that walking barefoot is not hygienic at all especially with pets at home ! Hope you wash your feet at least before going to bed ....

The coloring is called seal lynx point, and the breed is rag doll. Other breeds can have that coloring tho.

+Dawiizme it's hard to say. You could try to get them into the squatting position before you get too involved with the process. You can see this part of the video it you fast forward to about the 3:30 mark. If they can't do the squat, then probably not. Even if they can't go all the way, some people just get to the last ring and their cat doesn't want to go any further and they leave the last ring permanently. This might be another option for you.
a cat that can not easily get out of a toilet on his own is in danger of drowning. Given that some of these steps require a hole big enough to fall in but which would make it harder for a cat to get out, I would NEVER teach a young cat or a cat with short limbs to do this. www.petmd.com/cat/emergency/accidents-injuries/e_ct_near_drowning

It's hard for your kitty to use a toilet and they may never get there. You have come a long way though and I would recommend reverting back to a stage where they are comfortable doing both in the toilet. Once there, extend the time before you advance to the next stage. Positive reinforcement is key and you should heavily reward when they go successfully. I'm not implying you would, but never punish bad behavior, they don't know why they are being punished and it breaks trust.
