    I really like hearing from different members of the team, e.g. Marc in the body shop. It's great to hear the extra insight. Allegro looks good; I imagine the look will properly come together once it's dropped onto final suspension/wheels.
    Thanks again to Cal and Alex for answering my question about Escort bulbs. Much appreciated. 🙂

    Earlier Scimitar's had slimmer metal door handles which would allow you to move the 'style line' higher up the door which might open up more options? You could even use your fancy Escort handles?

The basic idea is to mix and spread it over the area and wait till the crackling sound is over. It is now so cold and frozen rhat you can break it off without much effort. Maybe something to look into…

    The water blaster that you are getting is just a fantastic piece of Kit. Can’t tell you where I saw it being used. If I tell you I may have to shoot you. But trust me it is brilliant. Just don’t let it go across your toes. It was being used to blast off rexine pads that were applied by Very thick,and I mean “very” thick contact adhesive. It blasted it to bare metal. Incredible.

    • @fraserwright9482
      @fraserwright9482 4 місяці тому

      I would disagree with the water blasting system as it's marine based and there are two aspects where it's the wrong tool. 1st it's designed for ships with thick metal, you are also blasting into crevices to get sealant out. Pushing moisture into the seams. Dry ice/alc is used for sealant or bitumen removal as it's not pushing the metal and it's not messy. Plus you require no machinery. I use a vac abrasive blaster in conjunction with dry ice as this requires no blast room or wet room

    • @RetropowerNat

      @@fraserwright9482sabbiatura biellese use water at 3000bar to strip body shells to bare metal and have done for some time. Their history of stripping extremely valuable vehicles is considerable. Likewise a well known business in the uk rebuilding extremely valuable vehicles also uses this system. Having tried almost all alternatives (including dry ice and dry ice blasting) we are looking to improve things further.

They specialize in that engine (usually in RS3/TT-RS) but Hank Iroz also has a Quattro of his own with the later North American Volkswagen 2.5l 5 cylinder (at ~900hp). That PVC coating is great unless something gets through it and the corrosion creeps behind it, then you can have a big hole in the metal without even knowing or the MOT finding it .......

    • @RetropowerNat
      @RetropowerNat 4 місяці тому

      Absolutely! One of the reasons that we zinc metal spray is to prevent this exact issue. We don’t use pvc either but the problem can happen regardless of coating type. It is amazing just how bad corrosion can get on top of pvc sealer before it gives way!!!

    If you want another way to break down bitumen undercoating, try ether diesel or tolurene.
    As that's what is or was used up to 00's for stripping and removing bitumen from aggregate in testing laboratories.
    I worked in the tarmac/ aggregates trade for 8 yes, and it's because diesel fuel is one of the lowest refraction made from crude oil.
    And be aware that tolurene can be collected and cleaned and reused using a collection tank and still , once filtered.
    And yes, this used to be in Ipson P40 from the 70s & 80s, cause l remember using it on bodywork on my Peugeot 205GTi 85/6 model with later 115 bhp engine, bought for £450 .
    Yes remember prices like this lol .😅
    Did a very simple and easy body restoration. The car was 10 yrs old when I got it, and poorly painted metallic teal bodyshell out of a spray can.
    I fitted it with recovered parts and interior for £250, rear unmarked or cut parcel shelf for £25, 2nd hand plastic, and the hand tearing small metal buttons missing from the doors and wings.
    The front under bumper valance was like a modern nylon jelly mold until fitted to the bumper, which could be done fitted to the car.
    But it was easier to remove it and fit it together off the car, the Marchal spotlights rusted like buggery and were the most expensive ones that I never brought. Lol
    I finally got it to primer, from spray cans, but was complimented on my restoration of the boy to primer.
    And replaced the brass rods for the gear selection, and then it took two mechanics to get the right gear selection sorted.
    But the car got taken on by my d@#k of my older brother, and he did his usual and left the car to get nicked and stripped out after my hard work!!!!
    I'd love to restore my first 3 cars, a 1750HL Allegro estate, first cat l made a profit on, my 3rd car, MG Metro Turbo in the rare black colour but I ain't paying £9000 for a car that still needs work!
    And finally my 2nd car, a Suzuki SJ410 convertible, l had a UAE import in brown!!! Yes, but called Terracotta on the paperwork lol.
    Resprayed it black, pin striped it, and got a white hood and Cobra bucket seats originally for a Mini.
    Got a replacement dash from Percy Tait Suzuki.
    But now most Suzuki's have rusted or been wrecked on off-roading jaunts or flipped, but the dodgy tall body to chassis length is scary.
    And it is great fun filled 6 up no roof or rear seats or seat belts and wobbling like a jelly.
    My car journey till I got my head turned by mc's and especially Italian mc's that have worse electrics than our supposed 'Lucas, lord of darkness' from the 70s.
    Which isn't right .

    Is it a customers choice to have the Retrpower logo on things, like eteh Escort mirrors and cluster surround hood catct etc, or are they compulsory as part of the contract for you to build the cars?

      Exactly as Robert cook says, nowhere near being an effective process. I have used a (very powerful, 250cfm airflow rate) dry ice blaster, and while it cleans engine internals very nicely, and removes oily deposits from aluminium castings and the like, it would never remove under seal. It won’t even remove oxidation from the surface of aluminium effectively, unfortunately.

    Why are you giving up on the glass blasting??

    • @RetropowerNat
      @RetropowerNat 4 місяці тому

      We aren’t. It’s just that prior to the initial blasting session, we usually have to have a substantial under seal and seam sealer removal session which takes longer than the blasting operation. It has become apparent that the best method of removing sealers, while not putting the entire body shell through a pyrolysis oven, is water jetting. This has the benefit of stripping back to bare metal and finding very thin weak metal in the same way as the crushed glass blasting, so the idea is to potentially eliminate the initial blasting, replace that with water jetting, then still undertake the final blasting post-metalwork, since that must be done immediately prior to zinc metal spraying. Hope all that makes sense!

      Sometimes that seems appealing I can assure you😂 sadly it has usually broken its bond with the steel in a few places and will allow water under at some stage and cause corrosion, and also as correctly pointed out, we add further joints to the spot welded seams, generally by tig brazing them with silicon copper alloy rod, which needs a reasonably clean seam to start with. Then we also zinc metal spray the full underbody, which again requires freshly blasted clean steel to adhere to

      @@russcooke5671 seam brazing is a process by which heat is used to add a filler rod of bronze. Its melted and flows into the seam to add strength. The urethane based sealer is a contaminant that would make this process impossible. Its covered in detail on one of retropowers earlier videos.

    Could the cars not be acid dipped ???

    • @RetropowerNat
      @RetropowerNat 4 місяці тому

      No, we absolutely will not do this. It would be wonderfully easy. But putting a body shell through a pyrolysis oven then dipping it is not the way to a good result! We have experience with this and it has always been bad experience! We also tried the alternative, using hot caustic to do the initial organics stripping, and had issues there too. We have always come back to blasting, preceded by hard graft to remove the coatings

      @@RetropowerNat thanks for the reply and I don’t doubt what you are saying but I’ve seen many restorations is some very expensive rare cars and they have been acid dipped and it seems to work very well. But obviously not everyone is of the same opinion. 👌👌👌

      interestingly I would say that the vast majority of "high end" restorers that I know reasonably well all use techniques other than dipping. the more I meet, the more I find that have had bad experiences! Was quite an eye opener as I was of the same opinion as you 15 years ago!@@russcooke5671

    Just wondering. I'm not a painter but isn't it a good idea not to put your hands on a car especially if it has been undercoated etc. Body oil on hands etc. I realise you probably use grease and wax remover prior to further coats.
    I noticed your stainless steel exhaust welds are all discoloured, which is a product of the TIG welding process. This can be removed by wiping with a pickling solution available in welding shops. I don't know the correct name for this product but it's use makes for a better job.
    Keep up the fantastic video's. It's my favourite UA-cam show down here in Australia.

    Put the Scimitar scans online and let the community have a go at working out your design issues with the arches - I am sure that enough people would be willing to have a go at it for a credit on your vid... Personally I just think it's a cr@p looking car.
