    Thanks for this Mattias. This came at the right timing for me as a couple of weeks ago I got Orb Composer 1.4.5. I'm about upgrading to the 1.5.
    With regards using AI for composition, I have no problem with AI as a tool for generating ideas, but even more importantly, for the educational aspects. I've learnt a lot quite quickly from AI mixing and mastering tools, and I got Hexachords Orb for this particular reason - to learn more about composition.

      Hi Tony. Cool, yeah it can be very helpful as a learning tool. Virtual AI teacher. ;) We do use these progressions, melodic part writing anyway so why not get more info on the subject. I’m a sponge for new ways of looking at music. You run into creative blocks from time to time. But yeah, on most of those times I just listen to completely different musics and get inspired. It’s almost the same thing. Tools are tools for the crafting people. Use them if you feel for it. ☺️ Thanks for writing and good luck with the upgrade. I’m having a good time with 1.5 and it did yield some interesting melodies which I can mold into my style by arranging / sound design and my personal voice. It’s always important to remember who YOU are. And use your own ears to what resonates with you.

    Funkar Orb 1.5 i Bitwig?

      Hi Ulf, I am happy to hear you watch all my videos and content!
      I can’t really recommend any specific of these. It’s all up to personal preferences and what would suite your production, budget and needs which I know little of. ;)
      Yes I did use third party sample libraries with Orb Composer in the example. Hexachords have some templates with basic instruments layed out for say Studio One. But you will have to add all the virtual instruments yourself and make the routing. The template only consista of empty midi tracks (ie. Violin 1 Legato, Violin 1 Marcato etc). So it’s quite the setup before you get started. That said it’s a cool product for generating ideas.
      I didn’t try Orb Composer in Bitwig 1.5. But it should work in any daw since you just setup midi in devices to receive the midi data from the Orb Composer midi app. Orb is not a plugin you load up within the DAW (as of now). I used Orb as standalone software which sends midi data to Studio One, Logic, Bitwig, Live or whatever!
      Hope the info helps Ulf! Cheers, Mattias! 😋💎

    Mattias, can you do other genres, like pop, R&B, Jazz, and Gospel? I really like that it can be done in Studio One. I looked at this composer before, but I cannot get an answer to where the instruments came from until some answered me in the comment section on the Orb Composer video. Thanks for sharing.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      yeah, the sounds from your DAW and third party plugins will be a big helper to get a good vibe from the generated content in Orb Composer. So be sure to setup the routing before you start working. It's a bit of setup but when it's done...it's done. ;)
      I dunno how well it performs pop, R&B etc. I noticed there is a template for pop/rock, electro etc... but I've yet to try it.
      Personally I wouldn't use such a tool for these other music styles you mention. To me AI seems a perfect match for, and more suited to, classical composition (read film scores and game music). But with the right flow it should work for anything. All genres have formulas, it's all math, which can be translated to a plugin or whatever. Then one is free to do whatever they feel with the generated content. There are only 12 notes, treat them carefully... as someone said... ;)

    I I take so long to compose; I sometimes want to get somehere with developing a sketch. I would treat OrbS as anti-depressant.
    I liked your piece, but the violin's appearance is a bit abrupt, but has AI the same value as some random person's opinion?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      Yeah this was just a quick demo and my personal view on these tools, are that they should be used for inspiration and not necessarily for final product. I would never let an AI make the whole decision. It's just tossing up ideas which you can then use and flesh out into a bigger arrangement. Some randomized ideas are just too "cheesy" and "simple". ;) Indeed anti-depressant if you are in a bad mood. 😄👌Thanks for writing!

      @@MattiasHolmgren Of course, the Dutch Masters used to get their students to finish the painting; they were trained to paint in the exact style of their master. I envisage OrbS being able to do this; you 'train' the AI in your style and it finishes the piece for you! This assumes you have a defi nite style of course.

    Mattias, how do you route Orb Composer into Studio One?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      Hey Jerome, they include a special software with Orb composer that run as a service in the background. So in Studio One you need to map those specific midi ports (Midi in devices) so you can get access to the midi data that is sent from Orb Composer. Its a bit of a setup, but after that initial setup all is good to go for future sessions.

      Hi Jerome, I dunno if they have the info in some tutorial video on how to setup the routing. Did you install the Orb Composer Midi app? If so, you should go to preferences->external devices and first add a Instrument device in S1 and make it recieve from Orb 0 and send to Orb out.
      Then map up all other Orb 1, orb 2, orb 3 etc. as New Keyboards to receive midi from these orb channels. Hope the info helps.

    Orb composer has potential but I got the "cheaper" and crash sensitive artist version (1.3-1.4) and this version is extremely limited in the number of chord progressions. Also, the drum track is not really useful to the very limited pattern generation in 1.4. For me, there is a dissonance between the capabilities and the current business model. As an "early" user I now forced to pay 79 euros for the upgrade to 1.5 artists, with a very narrow amount of simple chord progression, or 250 euros for a 1.4 artist to pro upgrade. On my system 1.3 was very unstable and 1.4 seems to dislike moving and removing blocks (sometimes). I know Mattias likes positive feedback but a fair consideration is the cost of 80 or euros per year. My recommendation is to go use the pro edition and skip the limited Artist version.

      No worries my friend. Discussing the price doesn’t mean negative feedback on me or my video. Its always good to discuss pricing and how it might be more ”fair” to the users. Yeah price models are not always compatible with us customers. I’m personally not a fan of ”rent/subscription models” or the current apple price rise to extremely astronomical costs for their phones.

    This is not an A.I. It's a generator that follows a specific music theory rule set and the other plugins are following the parameters.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      Indeed Orb Composer consists of rule sets with random attached. ;D AI means the machine will learn from it's processes...and hopefully get better results. So it's Rule-Based Algorithms rather than AI. But AI is hip, so we go wild with the titles. lol. I'm sure no one is offended. Hope you like the video anyways. THanks!

    I got the VSTi version, but will regret my buy thanks to 30 day back guarantee. To me, it looks more like algorithmic generation than actual AI/ML (similar but worse than rapidcomposer). Also, I didn't find the swing option, and the patterns generated by the arp or bass modules were not inspiring at all. The standalone software might be better though.

      Well, technically we've probably had the tools to replace composers since they came out with polyphonic synths, arpeggiators, & sequencers since the 70s. But isn't it really about note choice? If you have a machine that always plays the same-sounding type stuff, maybe it won't be enough to trick the ears for listeners? I wonder if there would be an industry where they hire low-wage Music Techs to build music automated tools, with no one getting any royalties, except maybe the company.
      I recently got the Audio Modern Riffer Generator & it's a pretty interesting vst sequencer. I set it up in Bitwig to send melodies to the MiniBrute 2S & play it back into Bitwig. It all works.
      Btw, I think I'm gonna go ahead & order my Minilogue XD Module today. I went back to look at getting the Behringer stuff & found the Neutron was no longer as cheap & their Model D has a 2-3 month wait to it, which I didn't see before. I never fast with my purchase decisions which is unfortunate for me. However, for an all-around super-synth that appears to do it all, the XD is a no-brainer. There are people already generating free & low-cost oscillators for it in the developer section, haven't seen anything for effects yet. So it looks like I'll be sticking to my original plan to get one of these..finally.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      haha indeed dood. I think you are doing well at beeing a bit slow and thoughtful about the purchases. It's good for the wallet and your insanity. TOo much gear and too little time...
      Yeah Minilogue XD was a no-brainer to me. Yeah I've already got some free oscs...it's nothing ground breaking though but a bit fun.
      It's a pure joy to work with it (now if I only had a HP filter and...) ;)

    • @shitmandood
      @shitmandood 4 роки тому

      @@MattiasHolmgren Yeah, the Minilogue XD seems to have everything you could want. Those CV inputs will modulate things, so I can try the MiniBrute against it. I also noticed some of the presets were created by Dorian Concept. I don't know if you've heard of him, but I saw some of his videos a few years ago on how he was doing these full songs with just a MicroKorg. Many of those presets sound really good too.
      Oh man, did you see Korg's website today? While I was looking up the name of the MicroKorg, I saw they just announced the Pearly White Edition of the Minilogue XD!! ARGH!!! Makes me want to scream because I love limited edition products! If they had Pearly White for the module, I think I'd send mine back & ask for the Pearly White instead, but I don't see it for the module version. Dammit! My XD Module is currently enroute from Sweetwater & will be here next week.
      Another problem I've suddenly discovered is that I don't have a large enough mixer for my instruments. The Korg products have stereo outputs, so that's double the channels: Korg Volca Drum, Minilogue XDm, MiniBrute 2S, plus Guitar if I want to do some comping with the machines. So I need 6 channels. Crap!
      I also need a better guitar amp. I recently bought a Digitech Drop so I could down-tune without having to redo the guitar setup & found that the noise from the high strings right off the guitar will bleed into the sound with the amp & I can't turn the practice amp up high enough to drown it out, so there's a constant dissonance in the sound quality, unless I choose down-tunings where the tuning matches the tuning of the guitar. I think I can try it with headphones at least. So the Cold War build-up between synth & guitars continues.
      For guitar, I'm looking into the Bias Mini as the amp head (includes Bias Amp Pro 2), but unsure which speaker cabinet I should get for it. I'd like to get a multi-effects unit too & I think the Line 6 HX Effects would work nicely with the Bias Mini...It's murder on my wallet though & the speaker cab will take up some space, which means I need to make room for it. If I had that stuff now, I think I'd be completely done as far as having my guitar ecosystem setup (not including the special pedals like the Mood...I haven't forgotten about them..lol).

    Orb composer is a good idea but the IT implementation is really of poor quality especially since version 1.5 or 1.5.1.
    The application has a lot of bugs, and the interface is not at all ergonomic. The most serious is that the developers have noted the many bugs but are unable to fix them. Almost 3 months since version 1.5 was released and still no fix for the biggest problems. It is completely inadmissible for an application of this price.
    I have been using the application from the start with Studio One and I am very disappointed by this startup which does not have the means to solve the problems 😒

      Hi Christian, sorry to hear about your experience with Orb Composer. I didn't have any issues with bugs while trying out this version. They are coming out with a new version where it's re-designed as a plugin rather than a standalone software. I think it's the right way to go, since building your own DAW isn't really optional these days if you have another focus product in mind....like an AI composer tool. It's better to focus on one specific tool. This will probably make it easier for them to stay alert with updates and fixes on the core features.

    I think people will still need human composers, but don't have any problems with AI because today's music already sounds like it was written by AI. It's all the same, no new ideas. What's the point in writing it yourself? The tricky question is what should real people do when AI will be better. Perfect disneyland without kids. Listeners will also be artificial...
