Regarding MLS All Star, in the 2000s, MLS beat most of its opponents. In recent years this has no longer happened, not because of the opponent but because of the number of substitutions in the game. In the 2000s, the number of substitutions was normal for friendlies. Example - In the 2005 MLS All Star there were 5 substitutions, in the 2023 MLS All Star there were 17 substitutions. With a lot of substitutions it becomes impossible for a team to have a style of play, or a good performance. In the past MLS wanted to prove that they could beat European teams, today that no longer matters to them.

So I have two reasons why I don't like Garber. First, I'm a Crew fan. I can't forget the attempted move. The second, is because I'm also a fan of a lower league club. His moves are great for MLS, but have a tendency to damn lower league sides anywhere near a club. Does that mean they kill them right away? Sometimes, other times no. But, people flock to the bigger team, even if they have to travel farther when a local club is right there.
MLS has create an entire 3rd Tier league, along with a full-on academy system league wide. There's no reasonable expectation that any Commissioner of one league would/should help another league. I'm a USC Trojans fan, we're in the B1G TEN now... the "Conference of Champions", the PAC-12 is no more. There are certain hard truths in sports/business. MLS can't sit around worrying about the USL -- no fan of MLS (or of Soccer or of sports) should expect that of that league's Commissioner.
I think the issue is that he will now be on his 25th year in charge. To me whenever somebody is at the same job for so long it ultimately will hurt. This isn’t just a soccer thing, it’s a life thing. Think of someone at your job who has been there for over 20 years. They hate new ideas, they take forever to adapt to change, and they believe they are above it all and can do no wrong. That’s why these position should be like politicians, have term limits, or at least have to run to keep your position. When you have new people coming it, they bring fresh ideas, new perspectives, and will help the league in the long run. We are at a point where the league isn’t beholden to the almighty dollar. The league needs to turn their focus to the game and leas on the business. Cause no matter what, fans of the game will never care about the bottom line first and foremost. That’s why they are fans. And as long as Don cares more about money, the fans and him will never see eye to eye
“st. Phil” indeed put the league on his back by owning several teams by the early aughts. He and Lamar Hunt believed in the league and put their money where their mouth was. That said, Garner saw the need for teams to have their own stadium to control revenues and improve aesthetics. He also saw a need for a diversity of ownership. Not all of his moves panned out. Chivas USA & the Earthquakes to Houston move were mistakes but I can’t see who you could bring in that can take MLS to the next level.

For example, why are we playing preseason games in Asia? The US market is the one that needs to be developed most. This preseason tour should have been here in the US against teams people in the US watch. Imagine a game in New York against Palmeiras? They could have it on prime-time television and make a spectacle. They could invite celebrities from other sports and entertainment. This could have been a celebration of soccer in this country against Mexican, MLS, and South American giants. I'm sure that would have generated a ton of money and would actually attract the fans we need. Instead, they flew off to countries that will never sign up for the MLS season pass because they are on opposite time zones. It's the same reason no one here watches the Asian leagues. We need someone who understands soccer and how to sell soccer to soccer fans and beyond. I think they should also replace a lot of their media talent with popular youtubers. Right now, all of their on-air talent feel like corporate maniquins. I also think there should be one game per week free on UA-cam. I think if MLS focuses more on winning over soccer fans in this country, the league will take that next step and become a mainstream league in this country. I really think Don Garbers' vision has been realized. But we need new ideas. Messi is the ultimate DP. We will never sign another player with more fame and notoriety than Messi. A few years ago I ran into Tom Fox who was the one who negotiated the return of the Quakes in 08. He had some Quakes gear on and before I even realized who it was I was stating how John Fisher was cheap etc. He got mad and pulled the old "who you know who I am" card and said that he had a plaque inside of our stadium. One can understand what Don Garber is there to do as MLS commissioner,i.e. make money. He came with the same philosophy (from a NFL background) like many MLS investor-owners in their single-entity model. We get maybe 2-3 per year. Good for Canada they can take academy players and turn them into a good team---you have better coaches. One of my favorite youth coaches (from France) went to Canada because his visa ran out in the US.

@@r2dad282 I mean like all things, it takes time. It initially started back in 2007, however, teams didn’t really start their academy systems until 2014-2016. On top of adding an academy team, academy players have a significantly smaller impact on the team salary cap should said team sign them. The majority of these player play in the league. Also a lot of teams have sold their youth player to other leagues for $$$. I would say that the MLS academy system has been a net positive for the league and for US Soccer has a whole.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it let the asset keep maturing until it isn’t anymore. The product on the field has been improving as a result of the money. The investments into infrastructure and academies are expensive. I think they’ll start spending more and more each window until the new CBA is in place. Hopefully they double the current cap and do annual percentage increases like they’ve been doing

Call me crazy but I wouldn’t consider raising the salary cap to something like $20 million a bad thing. $20 million is still a reasonably low amount, it’s something that every owner can afford to spend, and if you keep the designated players/under 22 initiatives/young DP… You could have really quality rosters. $20 million is reasonable. It goes up quite a bit, but it doesn’t allow the free-for-all that destroyed the NASL in the 1980s or creates the lack of parody like you see in Germany.
You don't understand the "Salary cap"... its not a real "cap". All 29 teams could spend $20 million on Player Salary right now under the current "Salary Cap." But they choose not to. ACTUALLY, if there were a "Hard" Salary Cap of $20 million, we wouldnt have Messi and friends.

You are allowed three designated players that do not count against the salary cap. You are allowed to give players up to an additional $1.2 million on a GAM contract and an additional $1.6 million on a TAM contract. You can also have three additional players on your roster age 22 or younger on a 22 initiative contract, which only partially counts against your hard salary cap. There is also the young designated players. You can only give as much GAM/TAM contracts as you currently have total GAM/TAM to spend. Essentially every team has around $5 million of each but very few teams actually have that exact amount as GAM/TAM is often dealt in trades.

In the end, Garber/MLS/Crew fans managed to keep the "Crew" in Colubus and move Precourt.
Make the MLS open to everyone either pro/rel and get rid of the salary cap and any Team with a silly NFL styled name or soccer club instead of football club and change from MLs to MLF or anything that says football instead of “soccer”! The salary cap has to stay, it can be raised as long as there is a reasonable salary floor.
All sports leagues should change commissioners every 10-15 years at the most.

He had some Quakes gear on and before I even realized who it was I was stating how John Fisher was cheap etc. He got mad and pulled the old "who you know who I am" card and said that he had a plaque inside of our stadium. The guy probably knows Fisher so I don't blame him for getting irritated by my comments. Simple answer is that things need to change for the better.

the reality is there was no return of the Earthquakes, but MLS likes the fiction. Houston should have just bought a new franchise and made the old franchise sell to another local Bay Area group. Go to their wiki page. how can the earthquakes be champions in 2001 and 2003 if the franchise wasn't established until 2008? it's all a fraud, something Garber learned from his NFL days.

The main reason why MLS has outlived the original NASL is Don Garber. BTW: How many of those hashtag warriors remember the state of American soccer in 1985, when the only vaguely organized version of the sport was put on by the NCAA for approximately 3 month seasons? I do, and it was not pretty.
One can understand what Don Garber is there to do as MLS commissioner,i.e. make money. He came with the same philosophy (from a NFL background) like many MLS investor-owners in their single-entity model. I think the MLS is at a crossroads, e.g. wants to create more games, but still limit themselves with squad restrictions. Unless there are miracle changes MLS seems to be plateauing with the depth and quality. In the end, Don Garber is there to only make money, not grow the game (that’s the role of USSF and perhaps non-profit organizations)
Lies. MLS keeps adding better and better players. And by the way, any and all improvement requires REVENUE. Ligue 1 reduced its league from 20 to 18 teams because they're expecting to DROP in REVENUE in their next Broadcasting deal. AND they lost MESSI to MLS.... lost Neymar to Saud... and is losing Mbappe next...

Sorry, but it’s extremely naive to compare Ligue 1 to MLS. Ligue 1 produces world-class players consistently every year, transferring them to the Premier League. I don’t get it. DG has made the league profitable and a sellers league. We are building good talent and the league has improved….a lot. I don’t agree with pulling out of the USOC, however, if we want teams to take it seriously then US Soccer needs to invest in the tournament and actually spend money to eyeballs on the tournament.

One of the main reasons the Canadian national team, along with a couple of national team in concacaf, are actually performing decently right now is because of the MLS academy system. If you watched any part of the Leagues Cup game from last night, a majority of those starting players came through the Sounders academy system, and they dismantled Pumas. @wadeflores6978 If the MLS academy system was working there would be dozens of new, top pros in the US every year. We are a country of 330M. MLS just skimming the cream, it's not soccer development. We get maybe 2-3 per year. Good for Canada they can take academy players and turn them into a good team---you have better coaches. One of my favorite youth coaches (from France) went to Canada because his visa ran out in the US.
@@r2dad282 um there are tons of pros playing in MLS, USL and USL one my guy. We also do end up selling a lot of that academy talent to other leagues around the world.
@@r2dad282 I mean like all things, it takes time. It initially started back in 2007, however, teams didn’t really start their academy systems until 2014-2016. On top of adding an academy team, academy players have a significantly smaller impact on the team salary cap should said team sign them. The majority of these player play in the league. Also a lot of teams have sold their youth player to other leagues for $$$. I would say that the MLS academy system has been a net positive for the league and for US Soccer has a whole.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it let the asset keep maturing until it isn’t anymore. The product on the field has been improving as a result of the money. The investments into infrastructure and academies are expensive. I think they’ll start spending more and more each window until the new CBA is in place. Hopefully they double the current cap and do annual percentage increases like they’ve been doing
None of that will improve the soccer culture in this country. Only pro/rel will do that.

So while he has continued to add clubs and fans of MLS teams, he has also poisoned the well for many hundreds of thousands of other soccer fans. The sport cannot progress until Garber is gone. The future of the sport is youth development. Skimming the cream of 14YOs in this country is not youth development, it's poaching. So while MLS makes money, peak USMNT was 2002. Well-done, USSF.

Call me crazy but I wouldn’t consider raising the salary cap to something like $20 million a bad thing. $20 million is still a reasonably low amount, it’s something that every owner can afford to spend, and if you keep the designated players/under 22 initiatives/young DP… You could have really quality rosters. $20 million is reasonable. It goes up quite a bit, but it doesn’t allow the free-for-all that destroyed the NASL in the 1980s or creates the lack of parody like you see in Germany.
You don't understand the "Salary cap"... its not a real "cap". All 29 teams could spend $20 million on Player Salary right now under the current "Salary Cap." But they choose not to. ACTUALLY, if there were a "Hard" Salary Cap of $20 million, we wouldnt have Messi and friends.
@@davidday2373 you might be the one that doesn’t understand the salary cap. The salary cap for your roster is currently a hard salary cap at $5.21 million. There are current exceptions. You are allowed three designated players that do not count against the salary cap. You are allowed to give players up to an additional $1.2 million on a GAM contract and an additional $1.6 million on a TAM contract. You can also have three additional players on your roster age 22 or younger on a 22 initiative contract, which only partially counts against your hard salary cap. There is also the young designated players. You can only give as much GAM/TAM contracts as you currently have total GAM/TAM to spend. Essentially every team has around $5 million of each but very few teams actually have that exact amount as GAM/TAM is often dealt in trades.
@@gracielynn9623 Teams find a way to only spend $10-12 million on their roster, while other teams spend 2x and 3x as much. And anyway, the average team salary has doubled every 5 to 6 years (since 2010 or so). If MLS squeezes that down to 4 years, by 2027 we'll be at $32M-$35M Avg., with high-end teams possibly at $45M to $50M.

After what he did... meaning make the league a success? saving the league from dying on the vine? fostering exponential growth in team "valuations" (at least, if not revenue)? creating MLS NEXT Pro and a full academy system under each team? The Columbus/Austin thing that never happened -- that was not Garber's idea. There were clauses in the purchase that Precourt used to force things. In the end, Garber/MLS/Crew fans managed to keep the "Crew" in Colubus and move Precourt.

Make the MLS open to everyone either pro/rel and get rid of the salary cap and any Team with a silly NFL styled name or soccer club instead of football club and change from MLs to MLF or anything that says football instead of “soccer”! Then MLS can become a top 5 league. Maybe even clear number 1 in some years
