In most video game series, you can just look up a full playthrough/all cutscenes video of a game. You can not do that with Touhou. Lunatic 1cc's are the closest thing to a full playthrough and they are uploaded EXCLUSIVELY for the purpose of showing off skill. They will skip through cutscenes so quick as to make them unreadable as they are not the focus of the video, and that's assuming they're even playing in English, which they usually aren't. There is a wiki and it is very good having written translated transcripts of every single cutscene in every single official game and a surprising amount of fangames, along with links to download the English patches, but many people may not be aware of the existence/usefulness of the wiki. Their are some English videos explaining Touhou lore but they're usually just that, lore, not the plotlines of these games. Basically, there is no way to know the story of an individual Touhou game without playing it yourself and downloading an obscure link unless you go to a site you may not even know exist because there are very few English speaking lore fans on the Internet. This video takes every window era game, including spinoffs and manga, and functionally summarizes what their stories leaving little to no ambiguity on what is or isn't cannon by not even mentioning the choices that aren't Cannon. This comes with some problems, like without the context of the choice between legacy and pointdevice in lolk the fact that they are offered a potion of what is affectively immortality but better and they just deny it and it never gets brought up again is... odd, but other than minor things like that this is an amazing comprehensive video that allows you to experience the underrated narratives of Touhou project in a very accessible way. PS: PCB is my personal favorite with IN being a close second. I wouldn't have been able to experience either of them without this video. Thank you :)

1:21:00 I haven't watched the full video, so idk if you go over this, but Sumireko are not clubmates with Renko and Merry! This is a really good video man! I focused on trying to piece th1-5 to 6 more than the recent ones so this really helped me learn more about the recent parts of the big narrative

1:09:35 - may be getting something mixed up here, Ichirin is Byakuren's follower? She would be fighting for Buddhism in that case. I haven't really played 13.5, is that like, a whole thing? edit: 1:21:04 - could have worded this better, i think! Renko and Maribel don't work alongside Sumireko. Renko and Maribel exist in the far flung future of the touhou universe, and are university students where as Sumireko is a highschooler.
Thank you soooooo much for this video. Admittedly, I'm into roleplay and I've been wanting to add some aspects and characters from Touhou but have been struggling to find a way to do so due to my lack of proper knowledge on the series. The wiki works fine but I needed aomething more comprehensive to get the events down correctly. Much love. ❤
Touching video. Touhou is the sole thing that has not changed in me. Most of my personality, goals, circumstances, home, role, pretty much everything changed. The only thing that is not my most core personality or anything remotely related it touhou. Ive loved touhou for ages. I still love listening to the same midi tracks and feel the exact same joy as if i heard them for the first time. I still love playing the same games and the same spellcards, still reread manga once in a while, still paticipate in touhou. I bet it will still be the case in half a century. This video made me release so many feelings. I am tied to touhou, it is one of very few things i respond to with a feeling rather than stone face and stone heart perfectly neutral to anything. I had court i did not feel any fear or joy. Bone tumor? Not worried. Lost alone in the other end of the country with no family or friends? Nothing. Almost forced to engage in a knife fight yet heart didnt even race while holding the blade. But touhou is different. Nirvana is not for me, i will not drop love for touhou. The last sole thing that makes me feel anything. Touhou is the perfect illusion to stray into. I tore up. I am content with anything that could happen on this earth, just spare touhou ;_;

The funny things about spellcard rules is that some patterns feel like they exist to abuse loopholes in them. Can't repeat the same attack in a duel? Just modify it a bit and reverse it lmao (Release of Id and Superego in SA Extra). There are also some spellcards which are technically beatable but have enough random elements that you can get into funny situations (iirc one of the scenes in ISC can throw a wave that's genuinely impossible without items if the RNG hates you). Fighters tend to be on weird side because of how they play being vastly different, but even in context of that, sometimes you get things that make you think "hey what thefuck". Infinite Speed Flying Object from 7.5 is a good example because you can't block or graze it unlike most other projectiles in the game, all you can do is dodge it... except it's a bunch of lasers that cover the entire width of screen with only a short warning, and while the places they appear seem predetermined, the specific combinations are random so sometimes you just get completely bullshit sequences that are hard to react to in time, especially on Hard/Lunatic which add an extra laser. Oh yeah also eventually the lasers start spawning on their own, even though 7.5 lets you interrupt AI during spellcards! Also, some technicalities. Aya did technically learn from Eiki's lecture to some degree, given she rates it as "30 points. Close, but not quite.", plus Medicine and Yuuka never show up in her scenario (Yuuka does show up in Komachi's scenario, which is also set a bit later, but Medicine does not, so it's hard to tell if the lesson stuck with her, especially given how little she shows up later). According to ZUN, Iku isn't actually an oarfish (the fish name is written in katakana, which is used once in SWR), but she looks so much like one that many characters make oarfish-related comments on her anyway (such as Yukari's VS mode dialogue).
Also I'm ready for touhou 19.5 hopefully we'll see that 4th animal organization I have a theory that Zanmu commissioned them to put traps on the new characters' items
It's kinda hard to do that for touhou 1, as that game has next to no lore, and the opponents are very random The only way I could interpret it is that Reimu's shrine was attacked, so she blamed hell (in a literal sense) before she ends up fighting either (depends on which route you play) a biblically accurate angel (sariel) or definitely not an oni (konngara) It doesn't help that neither boss character actually has confirmed lore by ZUN, or that the game's ending, the only piece of possibly canon lore the game can offer, depicts reimu as a maniac as she orders a fairy that is incapable of granting wishes to just blow up the earth. Touhou 1, more or less, is just ZUN's attempt at video games back in college and I doubt that you can discuss much of a story, if at all, without resorting to fanon. Otherwise, I'd be down for a touhou 2-5 prequel vid, cause at least those games are more comprehensible lore wise.
1:01:38 Youmu participates in the incident just like the other three characters. Not sure why you're kinda excluding her, especially since it would practically be a plot hole for her not to participate? Why would she not leave the Netherworld to solve the incident? 1:53:41 Why would she be "too indecisive" to participate in the incident, especially since Youmu's character wants to solve incidents especially when they are related to spirits and such?

2: people more know about the fanon than canon
3: poor meiling
@@DarkSymphony777what is the TouHou fannon lore?
@@Jammox
theres fanon lore of everyone, but the ones that are most common ones are that some people are horrendous perverts or incredibly childish
if you look up characters in the touhou wiki, there's a small section that leads you to any notable fandom lore of the character
@@marisakirisame1st that was one month ago when I was an ignorant fool, my eyes have been opened to the greatness and horrors of TouHou project, Patchouli and Sumireko are the best characters and nobody can convince me otherwise.
Long live fumos!!!
what the hell...?
this just made SENSE to all the stuff thats happening in touhou games now.
i was having a crusade trying to make sense of touhou ingame lore and you combines both main games, spinoff, manga, and the novel ALL in one cohesive list and timeline.
why only 80k views? this is like the "OG GO TO" video when it comes to main touhou canon lore!
Phenomenal video, I’ve always wanted to watch a video that roughly explains the events of Touhou from EoSD and onwards since I’ve never had the time to do so myself. You deserve so many more views for all the work you’ve done to create this masterpiece
Now that's just what i was looking for, very good and precise, thanks for uploading this
ok imma just say this
Goddamn my guy. 2 hours (and a little less than 30 minutes). I haven't even started the vid yet, but I'm already interested.
edit: man's completed every game and has read a ton of Touhou literature. The amount of dedication to play all the games (including the fighting games) and go through all physical Touhou material is astounding. This man has done the thing I have wanted to do for so long: dive deep into Touhou. And for that, you have my utmost respect.
this is NOT what i think it is! i'm so excited to watch this video because it, as someone who just got into touhou from kkhta, seems to be exactly what i was looking for, and i've been for ages!
Researching all the trivia and the name’s meanings gotta be so much work, respect man
yooo my illustrations made appearance twice!!!
great video, didn't know this game has some lores (lie) and not just girls shooting at each others~👀
Absolutely amazing and in-depth video. Thank you so much for explaining each other these incidents in so much depth and humor. I really enjoyed this video and hope that more people watch this.
i watched all 2 hours of this video. and as a new atleast 9 month of being a touhou fans this brings me great understanding on every incident in touhou
Incredible video. Respect for all the canon research done.
Hope this blows up! Absolutely fantastic work and research. Helps me as an older touhou fan connect everything and catch up with the newer games and characters!
GOD YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A VIDEO LIKE THIS THANK YOU SO MUCH 😭😭
This is the most complete Touhou lore dive I've seen so far.
The funniest part of Touhou 17.5 is that everyone is instantly suspicious of Kanako die to her track record
This is genuinely incredibly well done, thank you
I really like touhou lore, so this video was a joy to watch and even brought me information I didn't know yet
i like how Eiki will just shows up, air out everyone's dirty laundry infront of others.
I love that you added the literal translations for every kanji-named character's names
nice, a 2+-hour Touhou video to watch after i'm done with all of the games (currently on 9.5) :OOO!
To think that this is "just" the summary..
I think the hours I've spent actually playing / reading all forms of official and doujin Touhou content go in the thousands and the whole journey is still mindboggling to me. And I learned Japanese somewhere along the way. Truely the franchise that formed a major part of my life. Now it's already nostalgically dear to me. Thanks for compiling this, so I don't have to :D
You have no idea how helpful this is
2hu 20 - The Return of Mima, maybe. At this point, Zun could accidentally drink a beer with a stronger kick and pull Mima from his ass somehow from the Old World into modern Gensokyo considering Hell is slowly getting closer and closer.
I think this whole video should have been about wakasagihime only
In most video game series, you can just look up a full playthrough/all cutscenes video of a game.
I really like the in-depth explanation not only of the incidents themselves but also the supplementary info of the names and relevant cultural terms. very cool.
I've been waiting for a video like this for years. Always been curious about touhou but too lazy to go through all the media. Very grateful.
1:21:00 I haven't watched the full video, so idk if you go over this, but Sumireko are not clubmates with Renko and Merry! This is evident from how the latter two are described as being from the future, them also being college students while Sumireko is a high schooler, and the Secret Sealing Club being reportedly created in their college by Renko.
azing work in covering not just all the mainline games but also the sub games!
I always loved how fairies rarely have anything to do with the actual incident at hand, they just see it as an opportunity to be shit heads.
As someone whose never touched the games but always wanted to know lore. THANK YOU MAD LAD!
you know this video is perfect to write a fanfiction story for those who love Touhou like Wattpad, webnovel and fanfiction
because it have all the information about the incident
Wanted something like this for a long time. Thank you.
This is where the fun begins.
This is a really good video man! I focused on trying to piece th1-5 to 6 more than the recent ones so this really helped me learn more about the recent parts of the big narrative
th1-5 arent canon btw ++ theyre from the pc-98 era !!
Thanks to this video, I am now going to be giving a Presentation on all of the Touhou lore and your video greatly helped me with my journey of presenting this to my friends. Thank you so much
:)
15:35 Doesn't matter how many times I see this image, I will always laugh. What a work of art
I randomly got hooked onto touhou again and was too lazy to play the games, this is very well explained and actually kept me entertained!
Thank you, the video finally provides more insight into the story when delving into the actual canon. It properly establishes Reimu as the main protagonist and Marisa as the deuteragonist.
Bro great video!
Thanks for all your hard work making it!
Blud NEEDS more subs. Great vid.
Amazing job!
Great lore, i especially liked all the illustrations/fan art
finally... i can finally understand touhou lore
Cirno: is here basically for comedic effect at this point.
Something happens
Touhou characters: let's pick fights with random people until it's resolved
your video came out of nowhere, giving the best explanation I've ever seen, good job man
Thank you soooooo much for this video. Admittedly, I'm into roleplay and I've been wanting to add some aspects and characters from Touhou but have been struggling to find a way to do so due to my lack of proper knowledge on the series. The wiki works fine but I needed aomething more comprehensive to get the events down correctly. Much love. ❤
Touching video. Touhou is the sole thing that has not changed in me. Most of my personality, goals, circumstances, home, role, pretty much everything changed. The only thing that is not my most core personality or anything remotely related it touhou. Ive loved touhou for ages. I still love listening to the same midi tracks and feel the exact same joy as if i heard them for the first time. I still love playing the same games and the same spellcards, still reread manga once in a while, still paticipate in touhou. I bet it will still be the case in half a century. This video made me release so many feelings. I am tied to touhou, it is one of very few things i respond to with a feeling rather than stone face and stone heart perfectly neutral to anything.
I had court i did not feel any fear or joy. Bone tumor? Not worried. Lost alone in the other end of the country with no family or friends? Nothing. Almost forced to engage in a knife fight yet heart didnt even race while holding the blade. But touhou is different. Nirvana is not for me, i will not drop love for touhou. The last sole thing that makes me feel anything. Touhou is the perfect illusion to stray into. I tore up. I am content with anything that could happen on this earth, just spare touhou ;_;
This is the best video ever. There was no video that summerized all of the touhou lore and now here it is. I thank you so much. I wish there was a video that summarize the pc98 era and how it changes from the canon lore
So it's just a massive group of friends that battle each other over everything?
Sorta.
kanako gives utsuho big nuclear mountains of faith
I was wishing for a vid covering all the incidents and you did a real good job!
Thanks man, you saved me researching touhou, now touhou has taken me and now I'm showing my friend. Thank you man
Ahh Thank you brother! I've been waiting for this video ever since 2007. Tohou lore always seemed so charming to me, but I can't read moonrunes and I could never find sufficient resources in languages I know. Amazing work!
I would like a video going into the adventure of Renko and Merry
why it took me SOOOOOO MANY YEARS to understand that the leg of fussion was a reference to the elephant leg WTF... it never passed thru my mind...
Not even touhouwiki? 😂
@@HyperVanilo never looked that up at all i was more involved about the story than anything else XD, except for yuyuko i love her
Edit: also i was cassually watching a documentary before this video about some pictures taken of the elephant leg, and it sparked
IT WAS PRONOUNCED CHIRNO ALL THIS TIME??
Love this video you really explain it very well and interesting!!
A good part of the later half of these games being caused by the Moriya Shrine is hilarious
haven't played touhou for yrs but man i forgot remiu can't catch a break and how violent the main cast are except maybe sanae
I'll never get over how reimus power is to fly through life. Not only is it an unbelievably broken power, it's also incredibly unique.
She is able to fly out of reality
I also like how she can only use it subconsciously and at times when she's absentminded
What a awesome video! Coll to have all Touhou story in one place. Great job!
Outstanding!
bro just comes and drops whole touhou story, insane
i wonder how long it took him to make this
Also I'm ready for touhou 19.5 hopefully we'll see that 4th animal organization I have a theory that Zanmu commissioned them to put traps on the new characters' items
So this is where my iphone 4 went
now we need a prequel vid covering TH 1-5
It's kinda hard to do that for touhou 1, as that game has next to no lore, and the opponents are very random
The only way I could interpret it is that Reimu's shrine was attacked, so she blamed hell (in a literal sense) before she ends up fighting either (depends on which route you play) a biblically accurate angel (sariel) or definitely not an oni (konngara)
It doesn't help that neither boss character actually has confirmed lore by ZUN, or that the game's ending, the only piece of possibly canon lore the game can offer, depicts reimu as a maniac as she orders a fairy that is incapable of granting wishes to just blow up the earth.
Aesome video for lore! Ive always been curious about the story in this series amd have been hoping for a way to have it summarized in one place.
The dedication is truly unreal
