Today we are skiing Vail. Vail is about 45 minutes from our headquarters in Breck, just a straight shot on I-70. It's a Saturday today so as usual, there are a lot of people here. We were forecasted to get I think two to six inches last night, we got zero. So we were hoping to have a little bit more snow to ski and show you guys. However, we're going to give you sort of a quick tour of what it's like to ski a typical day at Vail. It is a bit different than Breck in the sense that Vail is huge. The scale of Vail for anyone who has not been to a mountain like this is pretty amazing. I grew up skiing the mountains in the Northeast and Vail was actually the first mountain out west I ever came to and it blew my mind when I came out here for the first time. So we're going to probably stick in the trees today just because it's pretty overcast. It is snowing a little bit. The Back Bowls are pretty white out right now so we're going to try to find some pockets of good snow, some fun stuff to jump off of..
And then we're going to end the day with something called the Minturn Mile. The Minturn Mile is a sort of locals favorite way to end the day at Vail. It's out of the back country gate. You ski down about two and a half miles, 2000 vertical feet from the top of the gate down into the town of Minturn. And we're going to go have lunch and some beers at the Minturn Saloon.
It's a Saturday. So it is super crowded. I think when people think of Vail, often the first thing that comes to mind is the crowds.
What we really like about Vail versus Breck is the fact that the terrain is a little different. You get some funky cliff drops, some funky rocks, some funky pillows. It's just a little bit different, an opportunity to be a little more creative on the terrain. So something like this is not something you'd really ever find at Breck, at least not that I've seen.
So we're at the top of the Minturn Mile back country gate. You can see the gate behind me. This is out of bounds terrain. This gate will lead us into a big bowl here. And then down through a gully that's about two and a half, three miles long. And about 3,000 vertical feet descent to the Minturn Saloon. I bet this gets skied probably 10 to 25 times per day here. It's super popular. During COVID, you do have to make a reservation at the Minturn Saloon so we made our reservation and our group is going to make our way down. I would expect it to take us like 15, 20 minutes. But it is a super fun, sort of unique experience that you can really only get here at Vail.

We have some snow in the forecast so we'll be creating a lot more content in the coming weeks... what would you like to see?!

Ha ha have done the mile multiple times at Vail and too bad you left out the long luge section, the stream crossing and the uphill cliff near the end of the mile in your video...was at Vail last week and my new Glade goggles were the bomb especially since we had such varied conditions including a couple of white out days in snowstorm and also some Blue Sky sunny days without a cloud in the sky!

Stoked to hear the goggles are working out for you! The Mile track changes slightly every year... no need to navigate any cliffs or streams this time around...

Geat segment. Watching you ski I noticed that you only make right side pole plants. I encourage you to become an equal opportunity pole planter. Looking forward to wearing my new Glade optics at Breck next week.

Thanks for the tip, Dave. As I said... I am definitely not a pro skier!
