So, we're at Wolf Creek right now. We came down here from Breckenridge yesterday. Wolf Creek is about three, three and a half hours, depending on the weather, south of Breck. And the reason we are here now, today is because Breckenridge has no snow. A lot of Colorado has no snow right now. However, Wolf Creek has been getting hammered. So, we are doing a quick storm chasing mission. Wolf Creek got about 13" last night. It's nuking right now. So, it should be a good day for free refills. Right now, we're doing a little bit of a hustle to get to the lift line just because we have Summit season passes here and it is a weekend on a powder day. So, there are a lot of people here for Wolf Creek. So, we're trying not to get stuck in the lift line. It is about, I don't know, 7:20, 7:30 right now, so I think we'll be okay, but better be safe than sorry.
Wolf Creek is a bit different than the mountains we're used to up in Summit and the surrounding area. It's not on any sort of major passes on the Icon Pass or the Epic Pass. It is still very much an independent mountain, and it's a small mountain. So, it does have this sort of old Colorado ski mountain feel that sort of adds to the charm, but it is very bare bones. Not a lot of amenities, not a lot of places stay around here, which is certainly part of the appeal for a lot of people. So, most of the time, I think the best way to describe Wolf Creek and other mountains like this is big snow and small crowds. Which for people that really care about skiing, it's a great spot.
People come here to try out a bunch of different terrain. There's cliffs, chutes, bowls, trees, a lot of really good seed trees. So, really, there's a huge wide variety of terrain, which is certainly part of the appeal here because sort of depending on what type skiing lights that do, there's a little bit of something for everyone.
Decently deep. Deeper than I thought it would be, at least.
So, the other super cool thing about Wolf Creek and what makes it a pretty desirable mountain to ski at is that there's an argument to be made that Wolf Creek gets the most snow in all of Colorado. It is on the South side of the state. However, typically Wolf Creek is one of the first mountains to open every season. And they'll, you know, one to three foot dumps pretty consistently here. So it is, if you're chasing powder, it's a great spot to go.
The reason that we came here and sort of like the thought process behind coming to Wolf Creek is that we didn't have a lot of snow in Breckenridge. There is a lot of snow out here in Wolf Creek. So, for times like this, we pay pretty close attention to the forecast just in case Wolf Creek or other mountains that are in the area are getting or expecting to get a lot of snow.
So, I think probably four or five days ago, we saw that there was a chance that Wolf Creek was going to get a couple of feet of snow. So, what we did was actually preemptively book a hotel room, get lift tickets just in the off chance that, hey, if we are able to get down, then we might have a really good ski day, and it doesn't always work out. But a day like today, it really worked out. So, storm chasing is certainly not something you want to do all the time. You know, like I would rather just be skiing powder, in Breckenridge all the time, but it is a fun way to explore new mountains and to get some really good skiing in.
All right, we are done. That was an amazing day at Wolf Creek. We, we had a lot more snow than I think was actually forecasted on this steak or at least what the report was was I think they said four inches for today, but it's been snowing steadily all day long. I think we probably had a, I don't know, what do you think? 12 to 16 inches of fresh snow? Basically the entire day with three refills. I would say it was our best day of skiing of the year, by far. The snow in Breckenridge has been terrible. So to come out here and have a nice, like actual powder day was super awesome.
So, in terms of like how the day went, we did a little bit of everything. We did some tree skiing. We did a hike up along the ridge off the Alberta lift, super windy hike. I would be shocked if they actually opened up any of that other high tier terrain just for adding concerns. I bet that place is loading like two inches, every 45 minutes right now, but it's, the wind has been ripping. The weather has been present for sure. It's been cold, but in terms of like the actual skiing in the ski day, we were getting fresh lines all day.

Yes it is a powder show!
Last I was there it had snowed so much that Purgatory had 150+ base by Christmas and The WOLF had 220+ base.
We skied untouched lines ALL day, everyday we skied and never had any lines. Only 3 or 4 times have I skied powder so deep that I needed a snorkel to breathe!
I still prefer Mary Jane for great fall lines and Volkswagen size bumps but Steamboat and Wolfcreek are the two best "powder in the trees" days anywhere in Colorado.
Thank you for the video, I have not gotten to go skiing in several years and you have reminded me that it is time for a road trip.

First time skier here. We are thinking about staying spring break in pagosa springs and ski a day or 2 at Wolf Creek. How’s the weather there during mid March during spring break? Thx

Lived in Summit for 10 years, bounced around from Breck, Silverthorne, Dillon. Just moved down to Durango and it's the best decision I ever made in my life. Absolutely life-changing to get away from the Summit shitshow.
