This Elvin Jones record is sick
@Michael Lloyd Merichko is that what he said when you asked him?
HA!!! I was just completely immersed in him when I read that.
It's so sick, it made me well.
By far one of the most significant discoveries of this century
Yeah this is wild used to be obsessed with Coltrane and there's one live "Love Supreme" (which also kicks ass,) but this is full-bore "Live in Seattle" "A Love Supreme." They might be on acid.
Only to be appreciated at high volumes so the neighbors can enjoy it too 🔊
Two things that are hard to believe.
1. I didn't know that this recording existed until today.
2. How many people are complaining about the sound quality in the Amazon reviews.
This is the find of the decade!
Thanks for posting this.
One thing I have noticed, when reading music reviews, there are "those guys" who find fault in ant recording. I read forums on the steve hoffman site and other music ones and learned to spot those guys.
@@photoslum Yes. If I was only concerned about "sound quality" I would have missed some amazing country blues, jazz, and folk recordings. High fidelity is nice, but there is nearly a century of recorded music that isn't Hi-Fi. Astonishingly, many of the high fidelity fetishists listen to vinyl, which is decidedly low fidelity compared to digital.
It's OK with you that Coltrane is almost inaudible overall? Do you actually listen?
@@georgemcfetridge8310 they mastered it as well as they could. Would you rather not have the music? Yes, I did listen to it I’m happy to own it perhaps you are not a Coltrane fan.
@@HeathWatts You reveal the whole thing when you say 'fan'. That implies blind faith and no critical assessment. Of course I'm not a 'fan', as you put it.
The greatest musician ever, what a masterpiece.
My God it's so free... and crazy chaos... and still... much too kind to my ears. I feel as if, finally, truth is unavoidable.
Today I´ve purchased this new 2-LP release in my local vinyl-store, glad to spin it this weekend!
This music is the result of musicians operating on a higher level on conscienceless than most ever will come close
This version was free without being chaotic like most free jazz that I have encountered. I could identify rhythms and melodies within the improvisational flow. It reminds me of some of the music that Pharoah Sanders did later on.
Love hearing it especially Pharoh Sanders solo after Tranes solo -once you’ve heard’Live in Seattle’w/ the tune Cosmos&Donald Garrett& Pharoh& the rest of the group you’ll feel the connection; InshaaAllah waTa’ala!
For years I have tried to 'get into ' the "Live in Seattle " release and it completely eludes me; his "Live in Japan " has more 'accessibility ' and I have to reach out and stretch, though it essentially exceeds my grasp, I don't find ALL of it incomprehensible and (somewhat) irritating.
Blessed be those who 'get' "Live in Seattle ": I keep trying but..
Far out man! The audience starts applauding mid way through his solo. It's like a guitarist bending the notes with distortion, but this is on a horn.
Feel it those that are gone should!
Who here could keep it together for this long like these four did?
I bet Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff would freak if they heard this.
Probably have, up in that great Pantheon of musicians, composers and are wildly envious. Schoenberg and Boulez have their ears cocked too.
Which four? Sounds like there's seven on this recording. Bowed bass and added percussion plus Pharaoh Sanders.
Who?
The Coltrane Quartet was joined here by Pharoah Sanders (saxophones) and Donald Raphael Garrett (percussion and other instruments).
Fascinating use of percussion to shake the energy up... Brilliant.. Closed it out❤️
Our cousin elvin lol!

Must
This sounds a little disorganized in a cool way
OK. why don’t you use listen.
Non ho soldi
Art h must feel something forget about who it’s a what
I love this. Is such a pity that the horns are basically buried by the drums and the piano.
The mic placement.
c*
ah thats unfortunate, can barely hear john. elvin is playing to save his soul, though.
I am sorry. I was prepared to forgive the Olatunji Concert for having ropey sound - or the Temple University release - but this is unlistenable to me. I am someone who listens with pleasure to all sorts of bootleg concerts, yet I can't recommend this recording. I would love to have this concert with the horns actually audible.
You're right. It takes actual attention to the recording to see what you're saying. Few actually listen.
I can hear the horns just fine... Maybe a bit quiet but I think you're overstating how bad it really is. Unlistenable is a massive stretch.
What a shame. This Free Style and I do not get along. It seems to be a waste of one of the worlds greatest tenor men, to play this way. I love his earlier work.
Have you heard the studio album ?
lol

Hi Mr Belmont, Yes I love the 1965 recording of A Love Supreme. Trane really plays with feeling on this album, unlike the Seattle version. I think it is an example of The King's New Clothes. Or perhaps I just do not get it. Thanks for commenting.
@@cliffbowes6270 Theres some magic before total entropy takes over like at 2:33. The cool thing about Coltrane and Davis is how they enter in and out of chaos which gives a feeling of a journey into the unknown and a radical transformation after coming out on the other end, a good example is Coltranes Africa.
It can be over done like here and in some parts of Bitches Brew , but when done right it's pushing the boundaries of the artist and as a result taking them to the highest level of the creative process. But i agree i cant really get with this one.
@@davyroger3773 Thanks for your succinct reply Mr Roger, I couldn't agree more. Bird, Trane and Miles were among the greatest exponents of jazz. I find it difficult to listen to Bird and Miles on that infamous track of "Lover Man" without getting very emotional.
Overrated tune and freejazz style
Overrated? Lol!
Nobody in the expanding 1960s knew what was emerging; lots of angles tried out.
This sounds a little disorganized in a cool way
