Yup, since owning a Grand Seiko SBGA I'd never buy a Datejust, or any Rolex. Dial quality, finishing, movement---no comparison. I'm glad to see that the new SBGAs with the 9R65 are still priced $5k give or take, and there appears to have been no increase on existing models either. Ie, just higher prices for improved movements. Honestly, when I got mine, I thought "well, I'd better pick this up before the US market gets over the Seiko stigma and realizes they're head and shoulders above Rolex, Omega, Breitling, etc..."

Bangkok really is amazing for the food. Didn't expect this topic, but they have a wide variety of foods in that city, ate great Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, and Indian foods, all in this city, all cheap, all amazing. Oh and the cafe and bar culture there before covid was tops too. Funny enough, Thai people are starting to really love wrist watches these last few years. The wrist watch boom is happening there too, and its not just the iconic and established Japanese brands anymore, Swiss is more and more popular on the wrist in BKK.
GS is definitely worth the money, once you see them in person you can tell finishing was done to a high level not to mention the smoothness of that second hand sweeping around the dail, it's a sight to behold.
I agree GS dial and finishing is great but would not consider 1 untill they improve their bracelet and clasp.
100% agreed on GS over Rolex, better finishing, objectively better movements, available etc. Rolex has nothing on GS
Rolex has resale value though I have only GS.

Like you, I did not immediately gravitate to Grand Seiko. But as one grasps that GS really has a mission beyond just making money, it is hard not to respect both the brand and its watches. GS does a superb job of engaging those who buy their watches in a way that is beyond just mere marketing. Instead of celebrity brand ambassadors, they have Joe Kirk who makes available to GS fans the same type of technological information and product updates as are made available to the staffs of GS ADs. What a novel horology brand marketing idea: treating watch buyers respectfully as intelligent beings.
are you old enough to remember when watches were just watches and priced accordingly? a rolex was not such a great premium over a seiko. so back when a seiko diver was 200 or so, a rolex might be 600. now a seiko diver might be 300, so a rolex should be maybe a thousand. only rolexes start in the six thousands. 15 or 20 years ago, i had a business and wore some nice stuff. breitling chronomat. the current omega constellation. aquaterra. speedmaster. i never paid more than 2 grand for any one of those, but today they push 10 grand each at even costco.
i'm just done now. my world today is timex, invicta , casio, seiko and citizen. that's it.

GS is basically the Japanese equivalent of Rolex. Both make great looking watches, both are well respected and both like to raise prices that drives all of Us crazy.
The market is crazy indeed. My "collection" on Chrono24 has gone up in value with 35 % with the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph more than doubling being the best and the Seiko Prospex "pepsi" the worst with a 7% decline. And no, I don't own thewatches in my Chrono24 collection but they are watches I find stunning.

I am new to the upper echelon watch market and have yet to purchase a truly upscale brand. Unfortunately, for me, I’m one of those people who likes larger watches, 46mm and up, and they are difficult to find, from a trusted source.

Love these Q&A videos, Fed. Agree on Grand Seiko- but what do you think of their Quartz models? If your budget is in the range of 3-4k does it make sense to consider one of these 9F models instead of a regular choice like a Tudor BB?

I've been the automotive industry 35 years, the manufacturers are starting to control the inventory much more now that the pandemic is on the downside. They're also becoming more involved on the preowned side causing values to increase even more. If Rolex and other manufacturers hold supply down and demand increases it's easy economics, prices will continue to rise and yes there's more money in the economy but wealthy or wanna be wealthy people are always going to buy what they want.
Hey Federico! Great video as always, extremely honest and insightful. I’m biased because I was able to pick one up, but totally agree on the dial of the SLGA007. Just mesmerizing when on wrist. Now I think I’ll pick up a new speedy and a 36mm Calatrava…or file for bankruptcy…which ever comes first!
Are Grand Seiko worth $10,000+? Good question... the same can be asked of Rolex, Omega, Patek, etc.
Just a warning Grand Seiko will not service older watches !! They wouldn't service mine, a mechanical grand seiko automatic.

I have always wanted a GS but if they keep upping there prices It will be harder to chose them between all the other major brands.

I check out a lot of websites that sell used watches. The amount of used Grand Seiko's being sold is overwhelming. This tells me that people buy them, and for whatever reason regret their decision and flip them rather quickly.
It's more they buy them and selling for more than they paid hence reselling as can get another one.
They are seiko after all
Allot more Rolexes out there being flipped due to much higher automated production by Rolex and of course flipping for grey market profit. Yes Rolex do hold their value based on massive demand, good for those who actually get the call from AD

GSs new watches with their automatic movement is most definitely worth the higher price. And also note GS still fills the 5000-7000 range with their other models e.g. the elegance line, so it's not really accurate to say GS is moving up market and leaving their bread and butter price range.

Love your content, nice to see your thought about GS has developed, I’m sure that there are some watch brands that have been a huge disappointment to all of those who appreciate watches. I agree with you 100%, Thailand has amazing food and food choices, I feel that the openness toward various ingredients and different cultural influences makes Thailand a very progressive food country.

I agree about the range and value of dining in East Asia. Perhaps because Western money (and cuisine) was dominant for most of the last century the far flung places Westerners went learned to provide the best service and food--to make visitors feel at home. So Western cuisine in Bangkok, Hong Kong and Tokyo learned to equal that of Europe, US, etc. When Westerners became more sophisticated and when East Asian economies prospered they elevated the quality of service and food for their own people. That's how we have been able to get the best of both worlds in East Asia. This has not happened in the West because Western money still dominates the world even though less than in the 20th Century. Wearing my JLC today, but considering dusting off the Seiko.
What watch would you recommend over a Rolex submariner date steel 2022 in excellent condition.

I understand the stigma with Grand Seiko and Seiko, but to my knowledge they are two separate companies. While I understand it I feel like more people need to realize this. I don't know if GS needs to advertise this more, but it's not a situation like Casio and G-Shock.
You are spot on. It’s like how Audi owns Lamborghini but no one talks smack that a Lamborghini is just an Audi. It is almost their mistake that the word seiko is anywhere in there. If they just called it Grand I think people would have been happier.

federico. i might be wrong, so excuse me if i am. didnt you just a year ago say that you didnt click with grand seiko, sold one, and said you are not sure you can get back into the brand. now you are saying they are two times the watch that rolex is. i know, just because you personally didnt click with GS you could still argue that they are overall have higher finishing and are a higher quality watch than rolex makes. still... i think this statement is a bit contradicting to what you said earlier. you might have had a change of hearts. i get that. rolex at retail is awesome, rolex at current market prices is insane. so i get you frustration, but youre pushing it a bit too much in my view.

I saw an OP tiffany dial listed for 70k AUD in a buy sell swap forum I'm in. Watch retails for 8k. Absolute joke.
This may be a pipe dream but I'm hoping that I would actually buy a Rolex GMT at retail prices rather than double retail or more.

Seiko have gone mental across their range with prices and flooding their own market. There will be pain and the end. Rolex are a joke now and I look forward to a world without rolex or a need the mention the name.

Grand Seiko first what they need to do before raising prices is to quit playing with those toy movements called Spring Drive. Get real Grand Seiko, you losing traction in this up market. Focus on manual and automatic movements.
