- Here's Ten Years After (Alvin Lee-guitar/vocals, Leo Lyons-bass, Rick Lee-drums, Chick Churchill-organ) doing a rehearsal in the studio in Germany, 1969.
They start off with "I can't keep from crying", then go into a blues tune "Woke up this morning" and after a break do "Woke up this morning" take 2. Finally Alvin plays a little to himself.
Remember Animal? Drummer with the muppets? Well, check out Leo Lyons here on bass.
The rest of the band is rather relaxed, laid back.
This was filmed by Wim Wenders, I don't own the material.
True legends of the 60’s and 70’s! What incredible memories come flooding back to my teenage years of and uncomplicated time grooving to great blues. RIP to the best guitarist i have ever heard. A tight band so easy to listen to and smile with amazement at their skills.
Finding this is like finding a big chunk of gold.
This is better than heroin!
Heroin destroys your soul,
This enhances your soul!
Gold can’t buy this!
I am 73 Saw them at the Royal Albert Hall & Isle of Wight in 1970 Greatest band of all time.
Was at Wight as well, 14 at the time, right up front under the stage, delirious.
@@wonder6789 You were 14 and I was 22 now I am 76. Enjoy that we are lucky to have seen things that the poor sods today will never know about our happy days
Don' t we just love the passion of Leo??!
I've always said how Alvin Lee is somehow left out of the conversation of best British blues guitarists, or just best blues guitarists in general, is absolutely preposterous. He could do what everyone else was doing and a whole lot more.
Agreed 100%
10 years gone now. Unbelievable what that generation had to offer. Glad to have recordings and footage. Thx
Alvin Lee , Johnny Winter two exceptional guitar players that don't get the recognition they deserve. The world of " The Blues " would not be what it is today if not for these two gentleman's contributions. Your welcome 🙏. Peace ✌️.
You got it man, John Dawson Winter lll, I seen JW about 6X an Alvin only 1X but so f-n killer
I’ll add Paul Kossoff to your list of under appreciation blues guitarists
@@leonbogdan1686 Saw Johnny Winter on tour with Rick Derringer. Rick could play with Johnny, note-for-note! They blew the walls down.
This is gold 😎
Just so smooth, I love the tone and texture of his music
Leo is monster bass player and Alvin is the king. This is one of best bands of all time.
Be' non esagerare 😀
I remember the bass player from the Woodstock movie. He good. But, he is just a little bit "different ", isnt he?
Leo now lives round the corner from me in a suburb of Cardiff, U.K. My wife used to work in the local post office and told me one of her customers played at Woodstock. I asked her to find out more and it was Leo. After that she got Leo to sign one of my TYA albums for my birthday. He is a very distinguished elderly gentleman these days. The stories he could tell!
Leo is also an absolute Gentleman.
No one ever talks about how great Leo Lions is, but he keeps up with old machine gun...
Alvin Lee with a Strat...NO WAY DUDE. Lifelong fan here. R.I.P. bro!!!
Alvin is so young here and yet he has completely mastered every inch of “it”, just a beast!!!! It pisses me off that people don’t realize he was one of the best ever!!!
I've enjoyed him since day 1
I saw TYA about a year after they played Woodstock, was really impressed by his playing...here I am knocked out by his Wes Montogomery style octave solos- got to say he was ahead of his time in the rock genre for sure. NEVER saw him play anything other than his ES 335, interesting to hear him play a Strat!
My guitar teacher in the mid 80s was a huge Alvin Lee fan. I knew who Alvin was then but my teacher made me a fan. I wanted to learn how to shred but my teacher said learn some of this guys licks first.
absolutely 💥💥💥
I was into Jeff Beck, Hendrix and all that. I never had anyone turn me on to Ten Years After. I saw the Woodstock footage, but it wasn't the progressive blues like they play here. They took it to another level. He's not a real great vibrato player but he was playing really interesting stuff.
Good lord, what a fabulous early piece of archival footage.
fantastic, never have ever seen him on a Strat, beautiful, absolutely
The tone is amazing
..yeah, was thinking the same..Strat!..looks like a large headstock but not sure
definitely doing a tribute to Jimi there
One of my favorite bands, even before woodstock, where i saw them. Alvin Lee doesn;t get enough respect, air play or mention. Man, what a band.
Thank you to the chain of people who made this available, it is pure gold. Here's to Alvin!!!!! Hats Off!!!!
Absolutely, no question. AKA: SpeedFingers.
I second the motion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(etc.)
But Eric was no slouch in Spoonful live...
The essence of rock. Uncluttered, no frills just emotion and riffs. Leo is the real madman across the water. Wished I could have seen this band in their heyday. Thanks for posting.
Alvin was definitely one of the best guitarists of his or any other time.
I'll say again; where is Alvin Lee in Rolling Stone's top 100 rock Guitarists?
NOWHERE! Could somebody please explain this to me?
@@donhancock332 they get the ssssh. Album a negative review too back in 1969
D'accord, mais il ne faut pas oublier Leo Lyons ; je n'ai jamais entendu un bassiste à qui on pourrait le comparer.
@@donhancock332 Easily. Rolling Stone have NFI!

Saw them in London ontario just after choo-choo mama album came out. I was 14 my brother 15. We hung out in the arena after the concert was over and talked to the band. We gave them 3 joints for 2 drum sticks which my sister now has . They chatted us up while yiadies tore down equipment. To sit with Alvin Lee and Co. Was a special memory for a kid. Thank you for this .
Excellent OCTAVE PLAYING,. ALVIN LEE IS A MASTER GUITARIST.GREAT BAND .🎸😎🎵
Leo Lyons is the absolute epitome of what a bass player should be! we are not worthy.
Leo is so cool, so funky…he’s fun to watch!
Sure you are. What's he doing, playing 16th notes and jerking around like Eyegor the hunchback?
And sure Alvin Lee had talent, but tbh it was plain even in the late 60's that he had a couple of licks that'd show up in every song and that got old after awhile.
Fast isn't necessarily good, it's just fast.
@@michaelwesterland1853 just say you are jealous of the talent you don't have.
@@MGDCrown559 I'm not a musician. What do I care whether or not somebody's more or less talented than me?
We all listened to TYA when the first two albums came out, but man, after a while you couldn't miss the stuck-in-a-rut repetition so the albums eventually got passed on.
Gotta admit it's funny to see a 50+ year old man wearing leather pants and playing guitar, though. And maybe Leo Lyons was playing 32nd notes, I don't know, but it's only impressive to watch, IMO, for a few years during adolescence and then tastes change.
Sounds like you've got a powerful crush on those guys, hmm? To each his own, I say.
@@michaelwesterland1853 I think they rock, you obviously don't. I like rocking blues and they put out some of the best. Your taste in music does not recognize what I find spectacular. Ric Lee is also a fabulous drummer, your ear is not tuned to it. does not stop mine from enjoying it.
Leo Lyons the best bass player in the world!!!!!!!
Certainly one of the best. The man can play.🤩😊😂
This. Is. Incredible. I really miss those days. Every day filled with new discoveries and priceless treasures. Life was so damn good back then.
We were so fortunate to see life back then ,and now we must try to teach these God less morel less creations that this life need to change back to where we were with morels and respect for God and others
Ten Years After and Alvin Lee are icons of Rock and Roll.
Such a good natural sound .This was how it was done then.
saw these guys at winterland in san francisco fall of 1971....got out of vietnam in winter of 1971...they played for 2 hours nonstop and did only four songs....tripping with binoculars,, was really intense....at one time had all their albums...switched from vinyl to casettee ....made three 45 minute tapes with tunes the way i wanted them...to this day i know this is some of the most creative radical music ever made ....
I saw TYA at Winterland in 72. I was 14 and it was my first concert
Lucky man! I’m glad you made it home, thank you for your service.
@@kenvanalfen5025 wow, I was there! Remember KSAN radio in San Francisco? Absolutely the best music. Those were the days. I spent a lot of my youth at Winterland. Lol
Saw Alvin quite a few times at the winterland ballroom. That was a magical place. When it was torn down I got a basketball size piece of the concrete façade with the white paint on it. It sits proudly displayed in the guest bedroom.
@@Scorpio1060- at the time i was driving a 1970 chevy van, long bed,....when the show was over i could not get it on the street as the street was very steep....the van was a 3 speed on the column....slowly backed into the car behind me and the wheels just spun....very trippy ending to a very trippy show...
Alvin Lee ONE OF THE BEST
Leo Lyons too...
The Bass Player really ROCKS!!!!!
Well the best ever....Check out the other vids. The guy is King!!
Hi. Leo Lyons ! The magic freak. Just watch him go on videos of the bands gigs. I reckon he's one of the Top bass players ever ! He's a freak mate ! Cheers from New Zealand 🇳🇿👍
this is so badass man what no alvin in the rock n roll hall of fame shame on you RIP Alvin one of the greats ever
Wim Wenders was the camera man. That is how world careers are starting.
Hi... at 73 this year me n my mates n girl friends use to go to the dancing slipper at '''West Bridgford''Nottingham around 1966ish to dance n watch the Jay Birds ,,, Alvin Lee on Lead guitar ,,, I lost touch as I emigrated to Australia 1968 ..............then in Sydney in the seventies I saw an LP with his pic, on it ,,,, OMG that's the Jay Birds , but no TEN YEARS AFTER ,, I still remember you and brilliant guitaring , RIP Alvin ,,
Lucky man
Hi, I am from Mansfield Notts, and I used to go to the slipper also.I used to play in a band in Mansfield too and knew the Jaybirds, and Rick Lee used to play in our band for a short time. I live in USA now and rarely go back to UK.
Sadly I was a shade too young to really enjoy these guys on first go round, Wasn't till much later when starving for good new music that I started going back in time to search for the bands i had missed.. Happy to say this was one of the first I rediscovered. Doesn't get much better than this.
BETTER LATE THEN NEVER ENJOY
Please dont ever take this down man.Its special.
Bass player looks like he has a neurologic condition with those funky moves. I like it.
It's called soul. Leo is a fantastic musician.😀😃🤩
Ouch that's gotta hurt

Alvin Lee, one of the greatest to ever live. A true genius and artist. I LOVE this guy!
I love Alivin Lee, i drew him by hand in 1976. I would sit an listen to that album with headphones all day ..along with Hendrix, also drawn. Love this..ty for the person who filmed an treasured this gem

Herking, jerking, spanking his bass.

Alvin Lee was one of my biggest influences on guitar....RIP Alvin Lee
Just Thank You.
To whoever filmed this, whoever kept it, whoever put it on here and of course the Band.
Thank You All, it's wonderful.
The director was Wim Wenders
Wim Wenders directed Wings of Desire and filmed Ry Cooder's foray into Cuba called The Buena Vista Social Club. Two Oscar nominations. Also worked with U@ and Talking Heads. That said, all he did was set up a tripod and change film when it ran out.

Leo is an amazing bassist.
Amazing...I'm 68 now, A Space in Time was the first album I ever bought...thank you!
Bought Sssh in 69 , never looked back....55 years ago. Everyone has their opinion, but I'll take Alvin over anyone....capice
Cricklewood Green was my first Ten Years After 8-track that I bought after hearing them play Love Like A Man on the radio. Best damn blues/rock and roll guitarist that has been overlooked. I wish I could have seen them back in their day, along with Jimi Hendrix, the Doors (when Jim was sober) and Janis Joplin.
I have a bootleg gig of Alvin lee called made in Germany 1969 looks similar to this and of course incredible guitar playing way ahead of his time rip Alvin lee you will never be forgotten!
I love this. Real band, real sound,
OMG, for 50 seconds there I feared I was suffering from hysterical deafness upon seeing this video exists... Can't type either, so excited.
How is it that Alvin Lee/Ten Years After isn't in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame?!?!
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is bullshit. They are a good museum; but the judging is not right.
@@robertiaccarino4363 'Could still happen? - Alvin Lee is, quite rightly, making a lot more appearances on UA-cam lately I am glad to see.
Because the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a bad joke. There aren't any criteria for entrance. It's a question of who likes what when it comes time to let acts in.
And bands like Cheap Trick is in.
All awards are a joke.
RIP Alvin Lee. The greatest ever
wow I wasn't aware he passed yes I agree RIP
I thought I knew rock/blues. Duane Allman and Peter Green, but this is as good as I ever heard! Alvin Lee didn't have to take a backseat to anyone!!! And Leo Lyons and the drummer, Ric Lee, are one great rhythm section. I listen to this everyday
@@garyesposito8982 I saw them 4x live over the years-- One of my top guitar players of All Time!!!!!!

Alvin understood the antics of blues guitar naturally. A rare talent.
Hello world to Ten Years After ?.... thank the gods for Ten Years After !!!😊Cheers from New Zealand
I love this band and think rick lee is an awesome drummer!!!!
Read his Book: From Headstocks to Woodstock. written very well with lots of insight into TYA and his & the band's Humble beginnings.
Alvin Lee never misses a note , and this is a rehearsal ? R.I.P. Alvin. Best guitartist that ever lived.
Tru that
One of the top 5 bands ever...! EVER
One of best dead guitarist
Never lets you down.
They always gave it their all
This pure gold...and when finishing I see the cameraman was...Wim Wenders! This is ridiculously good
I had forgotten how good this band was. And what a great guitar player Alvin Lee was. I saw them at Miami Jai Alai in 1970 or 1971, and I still remember them as having given one of the best performances I ever saw.
Leo Lyons, one of the most underrated bass player. He could play bass as fast as Alvin did with the guitar.
RIP Alvin. I'm glad I got to see you live in the early 70's in Vancouver.
This is so good, so great to watch, brings me back to a time filled with so many amazing memories...it almost hurts to watch. In that good way.
In the early 80's they played a small nightclub in my town. I absolutely idolized Alvin, but was too young to go. My sister and a couple friends of mine went & ended up hanging with them all in the parking lot after the show sharing a smoke, (nothing illegal, of course). I was devastated to have missed that, but I did get to see them perform together once & saw Alvin solo two more times. Such an underrated master of the guitar. I guess he gave up on the Fender since it kept falling out of tune from the whammy bar, but he sure made it sing.
RIP Alvin!
Incredible...
just Screamer! TYA - Alvin Lee, Leo Lyons, Chick Churchill, Rick Lee - thank you WV
This should be played on the radio with no introduction.
Not classic radio.
Let these younger generations minds melt while they wonder why they've never heard such sounds growing up
4 incredibly talented players.Thankfully they found each other.
Busts a string around the 16 minutes area, re-tunes the rest and just keeps on going. Amazing guitarist and band. Saw them live in Edinburgh on the same bill as Jethro Tull as substitutes for Stevie Winwood and Traffic - Stevie was "ill". A memorable night.
When Alvin Lee was in Phoenix we heard what sounded to us a tight band until Ten Years After followed. I've seen the Doors, Hendrix, Janus etc. But Lee and the band were the tightest I ever heard. RM
One of the most underrated guitar players...ever.
Alvin Lee,on the stage where he offered a Show he never ceased to impress the public with his talent and in recording after year Still we admire his play in Rock ,Blues & Jazz 🎸🎸🥁🎹 AL , RIP.
Leo is a GOD!
Interesting seeing the great Mr. Alvin Lee (r.i.p.) playing a "stratocaster".
I have been playing guitar for 50 years . Alvin Lee has always been my no.1 mentor , its always impressive to play even close to the way he does !
I was lucky enough to TYA twice, and seen him with TYL, Alvin Lee & Company, the Alvin Lee Band, and he was always amazing! This is such a great find, and thanks for posting it! Alvin playing a Strat is so cool to see!
Thanks for posting this . Many TYA fans still out there .
It was such a pleasure seeing TYA live way back when - I had the luxury of seeing them 3 times in very different venues - they shined in each one - blues, jazz, rock, they could do it all. Chicks head barely moves thruout the 1st track - while Leos head never stops. Its raw and beautiful. Theres random music and finesse melodies. I;m 50,000 miles outside my brain as I watch and listen to you. SSSHHHHH
This is incredible! What a find. Watching this made me feel like a kid again, as I saw them in 1972. Watch Leo.....he is a madman!!!! Alvin is the godfather of shredding.
Yes
Same here ! I remember going into a head shop in early 70s hearing TYA for the first time, was just blown away ! I must have been 16 Wow

@@peteraustin370 Wow. Pictures of Matchstick men were there?? Just Wow!
I think a very underrated guitar player. I first discovered Alvin Lee and Ten Years After from the Woodstock movie. I was just starting to listen to music seriously and I guess I was around 9 or 10 when I saw the movie so it was about 1972 or so and on came Ten Years After and never heard of Alvin Lee. When busted out Coming home and the solo came up and I was just blown away. So by my uncle who was only about 10 years older then me started teaching me guitar and the first song my uncle taught me was House of The Rising Sun and in Guitar magazine there were the notes of it in that months addition, who was on the cover, Alvin Lee talking about his Gibson 335 and the mods he did to it. Even though it's a long song and it's so many years later I will watch Alvin's performance from Woodstock and still be knocked out. Can't believe it's been 10 years since Alvin's death, to young at 68. Was very sad that day he was my first Guitar hero. RIP Alvin
Without pedals even, incredible sounds, thanks for upload

Great muppet analogy. Thanks for the video. It's fun to see bands in a low-production environment as it shows what they can do. Alvin Lee was amazing.
I wish I could’ve shown up at this rehearsal with a $20 guitar tuner from the future.
