Your videos give me the best countries to do my exploratory visits. As a result, I find my best "retire cheap in paradise" location. Another great video. Thank you once again.
Hello @johnerd, thank you for your personal note of encouragement. It really does make a difference for us when we know people appreciate what we are doing. Your comments also cause UA-cam to show our video to more people so your note is like paying us a small tip $$ for our time. Thank you, Dan
I have been traveling the world for one year. I started in Portugal, then Spain, then Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, then Bulgaria. All that time, nobody at any bar or restaurant asked where I was from. Zero interest... until I got to Bulgaria. At Kanaal, a craft beer bar in Sophia I highly recommend, the waiter and several patrons said hello and asked where I was from, etc. After almost three months of being completely ignored in the bars and public houses of Europe, I will be forever grateful to those people in Sophia (three of which were Italians, but still it happened in Sophia) for reaching out to me. Also there is a very nice tennis club in Zaimov Park and I found a table tennis instructor in Sophia as well. The ruins of a Roman city downtown are interesting. Good experiences.
Great story. That is why I suggest people do exploratory visits. To find their magic place.
Sofia is a good place, but the air quality is very bad over there in the winter. Sofia lies between mountains, and has heavy industry. I would reather live in Varna, or Burgas on the Black see coast
โโ@@andraskleistenes8586There's no heavy industry in Sofia or in the vicinity. What's that heavy industry you're talking about?
Yo I just live near the Zaimov park :D
๐ Oh, wow ~ beautiful footage. Thanks for sharing how you decide where to go ~ very enligthening!
The snow is not anymore an issue in Sofia :). May be some cold and rain during the winter but no snow.
I've never been to Europe, tho my ancestry is entirely European and I love older European architecture. As much as I'd like to visit Bulgaria, and other countries in Europe, Philippines is more likely on my next place to visit list.
That is okay. The Philippines are great!
I just left for it became MUCH TO expensive!!
Yes and I am from the shitty Netherlands!!
Where did you move and is it more or less?
Did Netherlands became shitty because of mass immigration??
It is getting dearer everywhere this time, unfortunately...
How about Novi Sad, Serbia? I want to visit there.
We go later
I spent the COVID lockdown in Novi Sad. It's a nice, small city. People are very friendly. Definitely worth a visit but if you are going to live in Serbia, Belgrade is a better choice.
@@brianpan6453 Thank you! I did not know how small it is. But it looks like an interesting Catholic town in Orthodox Serbia.
I think Kiev is cheaper ...
Are you quitting your day job to be a stand up? lol. I love Kiev. But I'll save my next visit for another time.
Finally Eastern Europe. Thank you so much for showing Bulgaria. Eastern Europe is a hidden gem. Just a note it does not get very cold in Bulgaria. It only snows a few times per year and melts away. The weather is similar to North Carolina in the US
Should bulgarians use again the runic alphabet? Move to Veliko Tarnovo! ๐ง๐ฌ
7:00 - How is Bulgaria in partnership with NATO and the EU when Bulgaria IS NATO and the EU? Bulgaria has been a nato member for 20 years now and an EU member for 17. There's no partnership, Bulgaria IS part of the EU
True. NATO is a treaty that Bulgaria is a member of. Here is the theory and practice of the EU in their own words--european-union.europa.eu/easy-read_en
I love how Dan is so polite in describing just how monotonous and tedious America is today. I live in a 'cookie cutter' community and I could not agree more. I feel blessed but there's no denying it's boring.
Other than NYC and New Orleans, the entire country is one big mono-culture.
Bulgaria looks amazing Dan! Wouldโve never been on my list, but it sure is now. Keep it up, looking forward to seeing more of Europe
I agree. Bulgaria is a nice place to be especially in summer.
Prague is the Best! I absolutely love that city!
Best beer in the world ..........and cheap!
@@SenorJuan2023 absolutely ๐ฏ!!
Prague and the baltics have been ruined by stag parties from the British. Plus it is no longer cheap.
Okay, it was a cool present of Sofia!
Thank you, Dan! We had been discussing Bulgaria as our next place to slow travel to and then this video popped up. I appreciate the info and links! We are hitting Eastern Europe after SE Asia and I feel good knowing you guys stayed there- feels like a seal of approval
Glad it was helpful!
Hi. Since you're promoting slow travel meaning each stay at one place rarely exceeds one month, and considering immigration restrictions preventing long-term arrangements, I find information on 1-month lodging would be much more valuable than a monthly cost with a yearly lease term you tend to take as a basis in most of your videos. Just 2 cents. Good report as always, anyway.
Yes. Thanks for the feedback. We share slow travel, retiring in one place, and snow birding.
Interesting vid. I spent Aug and Sept 2023 in Sofia before heading back to Asia. I enjoyed the city, but it is not the place to be if you have an issue with smoking/smokers.
Btw, my girlfriend and I were in Hoi An recently and spotted Qiangโs (sp?) Hobo Ventures card at Minh Hien restaurant.
Yes, was there last spring and I agree about the smoking, and maybe air quality in general with vehicle emissions too
Thanks for sharing!
@@VagabondAwake ...and thank you for having such an interesting and informative channel. Really helps me to think about taking my government pension abroad (outside the US in my case) when I finally do retire!
Not a fan of the cold I would probably only visit during the summer.
It does not get very cold in Bulgaria, Dan had exaggerated. It is similar climate to Virginia, it snows a few times and melts away.
@@user-iv8jf3mr1k There are areas in Bulgaria where it doesn't even snow at all. Bulgaria is one of the most climate diverse countries in the world. There are regions in the meditteranean and subtropical climate zones that rarely have snow if at all
Hi! Im finding no apartments for rent in sofia at the $513,only rooms. I checked one month stays in august and october, but nada. What's your secret? Or maybe sofia is becoming so popular, prices are increasing? Thanks, love your videosโค
You won't find that on airbnb. It's a 12 month lease rate if you live there. Click the link in notes below video for that one.

Chisinau & Kyiv should be by far the cheapest European capital cities.
Well, he means cheap and SAFE.

The architecture looks incredible there.
I was just in Greece and loved it. Can't retire there because it's very expensive.
Where in Greece?
I think that, Greece is not that expensive, if you avoid touristic places. A bit more expensive than Bulgaria though
@@andraskleistenes8586 I was in Athens and Paros amd found it more expensive than NYC actually but a lot nicer and safer of course. Greece is awesome.
@@VagabondAwake Where in Greece will you be going? I'd like to see Volos and Mapfia
@@Mongoose-ct6us Paros and Antiparos are the secret vacation spots of celebrities. I have not been in Athens since covid, but I think you may find affordable lodging there. Glifada and Voula at the beach are elite neigbourogh of the rich Athenians, so they will expensive obviously
To remind you that Sofia is a Capital City and comperativly expansive. Try to move to a smaller town and with a 2500 bgn leva you will injoy a very comfortable life.โค

Too cold. Sorry
You are so full of it. But I guess some say anything for a Buck.
You must be paying more? Many people spend more. Are you living there now? What are your numbers?
Its not chaos...its called cosmopolitan life.
ok.
This is one on my radar.
If you like chaos you will love India.
I spent 3 years in India. I would only recommend it to very seasoned travelers that let chaos roll off their backs. This is chaos light compared to that. :-)
Have both of you been to Tirana yet? I think Tirana may beat out Sofia for "cheapest"
We go there in about 2 months
so many relevant things necessary not just cost, ease of getting visa to stay, medical and other resources necessary. weather it goes on. weather can provide comfort a massive thing hence no severe winters of course, doesnt have to be tropical beach like other areas.
Visa gotta be #1 cuz if u can't stay or too difficult it nulls everything else
The USA sounds like hell these days
The quality of life in the USA suffers in my opinion because it is so focused on money and ego. I couldn't see it very well while I was living there.
Nice one!
Prague is the only capitol city in Europe that I would live
What's wrong with the other ones? Besides London and Paris.
Prague is beautiful for sure.
Madrid is very nice, although hot in August. Cosmopolitan, fun, plenty to do.

Bulgaria is very nice. Are you sure it's cheap? I always heard Greece was cheap it turned out to be the most expensive country I've ever visited.
Where did you go in Greece?
@@VagabondAwake I went to Athens and Paros but was always told those places were affordable. Both very expensive even more expensive than NYC. I selected Paros iver Santorini only yo find out Paros is as expensive. I am a budget traveler that's why I went to Greece but was shocked at how expensive everything was.
We head to Greece later this summer. We shall see.
@@VagabondAwake If you go to Greece hopefully you can go to Volos and Mapfio. I was only in Athens but I heard those other two cities were cool too. I am a city person so obviously I absolutely loved Athens but it was very expensive especially if you stay in Plaka. Athens also has a few beautiful beaches in the downtown edem I believe is one with cafes right on the sand. Athens is awesome. I did go to Paros Island but that I did expect to be more expensive since islands usually are. However I was shocked that eating and drinking in Athens was so freaking expensive. Decent place if you find an apartment in the center. The outskirts are definitely not nice. Lived there for a few months.
Definitely not the cheapest capital in Europe but one of the best bangs for your buck. Skopje, Tirana, Chisinau, Kiev will cost less I reckon.
Kiev?!?
Kiev....lol, ya I wanna go live there.
Dan, have you been to Albania?
I thought Albania was an even more affordable country than Bulgaria?
I'd like to get your thoughts on Albania as a retirement destination.
Thanks.
Stay tuned. We head over the in about 60 days.
There's no such thing as 56 days with snow per year. This is absolutely wrong. Locals even crave snow, it's a very rare sight nowadays.
Let alone you can easily visit Plovdiv or the coastline where they haven't seen proper snow in years. Plovdiv is in the subtropical climate zone and almost never gets any snow. Cities like Varna at the coastline haven't seen snow in YEARS. Your information is kind of wrong
The video says 5 or 6 days, not 56 days. Thanks for the clarification.
Looks very interesting. To me, safety there is a big thing. Everything else makes me want to stay in Latin America somewhere. Since Lidia is a native Spanish speaker and my Spanish is passable, I doubt weโd learn Bulgarian. So I look at cities like maybe a Buenos Aires as a comparison, I guessโฆ..
Great video !
Thx Dan !
That makes sense. I get it. :-) We love the whole world and people ask about all these other places that I have been so I am going back to show it to my audience.

Hi Dan
I was there 14 years ago for business. Stayed 2 months It is a beautiful city but I found that anywhere outside of my hotel no one spoke English Maybe things have changed
Things have changed I guess. We are running into English speakers everywhere.
Wrong. Skopje is far cheaper.
We head there in about 6 weeks!
Cheap for Americans, but NOT for all others without dollars!!
DUH
Yes, I guess the dollar is pretty strong right now.
It's cheap with BTC as well.
And Bitcoin is still cheap now.
While you are in Bulgaria, you should check out Blagoevgrad .
We missed it. What do you love about it? Thanks! Dan
"Sofia is known for most affordable european capital city" . This is so misleading and total bull. Sofia is amazing though and i love living here so much
What city would you say qualifies for that title. Insults don't convey contrary information. They just make you feel big. Are you here just here to insult or move the ball forward? This is a community, I don't pretend to be a know it all.
@@VagabondAwake well, first of all Europe is not EU. There are very poor countries in Europe (e.g Albania, Bosnia, Serbia, Moldova, N.Macedonia, Belarus). Even if we talk about the EU i still do not agree that Sofia is cheapest because we have the IT sector which is very developed. For example my employeer pays less salary for the same position in Madrid, Porto and in Budapest for sure. I would argue that there are capital cities in the EU that are cheaper.
What about the age gap in dating and relationships?
You see some but not as many as in SE Asia.

Iโm involved in getting a retirement visa now. My lawyer, the same one listed in the notes, said there was no monthly amount set by the government that you need to earn each month. But you do need to show over โฌ6,000 in a bank account in your home country. This is what I have learned from being in the visa process at this moment.
For which country ?
60k Euros (or equivalent currency) in home country bank?

@@VagabondAwake sorry 6,000 euros in your home country bank, And it does not have to stay in the bank once you have the bank balance print out. A printout that shows the amount you have in your accounts at the bank.
While water and tap water in Bulgaria is safe to drink in general (and really great in some areas), I wouldn't recommend drinking tap water in Sofia as the city's water supply system is quite old. So get a filter jug or something.
Thanks for your thoughts. We are using a Brita water filter. :-)
I am guessing that Bulgaria has not yet been overrun with refugees. These days unfortunately you have to take that into consideration.
