    I'd have to add Stardew Valley to my own list, too. It's got interesting depth, it's very relaxing and easy to sink time into, and it's got some beautiful presentation. I've always loved little farming/slice-of-life sims like thia, and Stardew Valley is definitely my overall favorite of the ones I've played.

    If you loved both Superhot and Job Simulator then by god, you need to play Superhot VR. It is the most exhilarating VR game I've played to date, and that's saying something. The regular Superhot makes you feel like you're playing an action hero, but the VR edition lets you *be* that action hero.

      I just dislike that it's an Oculus exclusive. Sure you can play through Revive, but ugh.

    • @skalhen3704
      @skalhen3704 7 років тому +2

      thankfully its not an exclusive and the developers have hinted that their working on a vive steam version. only reason i dont got it yet- and that there are so damn many interesting vr games to play right now.

    Superhot in 2D was great, but I think the the gameplay really shows it's potential in Superhot VR which is definitely my favorite game to play on the Rift right now and probably the best VR game out right now. It really makes you feel like you are in the Matrix.

    • @DarkTenka
      @DarkTenka 7 років тому +3

      Agreed, Super HOT VR was AMAZING. I just wish it was longer and had more weapons. It's missing half of the weapons from the 2D version .. no Kitana, no Baseball bat etc.

    1. DooM
    2. X-Com 2
    3. Dark Souls 3

    6. Mirror's Edge: Catalyst
    7. Steep
    8. VA-11 Hall-A
    9. Pony Island
    10. Super HOT
    Pretty sure this list is massively different from everyone else from 4 - onwards. But thats what it is for me.

    Doom was definitely my single-player FPS GOTY. They nailed it.
    And I was so worried about it too. I played the alpha/beta multiplayer beta and did not have a good time with it due to bugs, issues and not caring much for the multiplayer gameplay. And then when they didn't send out any early review copies, I was really worried that the single player was going to bomb. Thankfully they surprised all of us with a really good game!

    Dear LGR, you have not only made me interested in video games, but hardware, software, oddware and many more also. I had always watched sims youtube videos and dreamed of playing it one day and when I saw your videos it reignited my love for the sims and I purchased a copy of the sims 3 off ebay. It's so much fun and I owe it all to you! and I also went thrifting (inspired by you) and found 3 sims 3 expansion packs, and RCT3 (another game which I also became interested in again because of your chanel!) so I just wanna say thank you and please please please make tons more videos in the future!

    Nothing grabbed me in 2016 quite like Recore. Having spent my formative years on games such as Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter and Spyro, this game hit my nostalgia buttons in just the right places with its open world, puzzle platforming, and skill dungeons. Combine all that with the corebot customization and color affinity-based combat and I'm hooked.

    This list is pretty much all of the games I loved this year as well, just with me personally the addition of Titanfall 2, HITMAN™ despite the shaky launch issues for months, and Shadow Warrior 2. Watch_Dogs 2 especially was the one of the most pleasant surprises this year.

    Nice list, LGR! A lot if my favorite games I finally got to play this year weren't even released this year but I loved them none the less. In no particular order: The Mark of the Ninja, Gears of War 4, Grim Dawn, Forza Motorsport 6, Doom, Rachet and Clank PS4, Overwatch, Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and M.U.S.H.A. for Sega Genesis (Yes I played it for the first time ever in 2016. I can't believe I just discovered that one!)

      This is a criminally forgotten game for this year. I would personally rank it at least in the top 3 games for 2016. It's also the game that I have gone over 100 hours of play time in the shortest time span (literally in the first week).

    I remember when I bought Rocksmith 2014 and it was still December of 2013. now we are a day apart from 2017 and I still play that game... trough this time I have noticed that in a lot of the cases improving games leaves gamers unhappy, simple games tend to have a larger life if I may say so, many older gamers are replaced with kids from the new generation typing in the chat bad words only because it's what other players do and since they don't have enough mind of their own they shut all the light inside and become toxicity itself. I've noticed a lot more stuff and I'm not sure if all of them are true but hell this is a long comment. BTW I've been watching you for around 5 if not more. I don't have much time as I used to so I carefully choose what games to play so I don't feel like I lost time playing something everyone is hyping and you are helping me choose as you are one of the few youtubers I trust. Thank you and best luck in the upcoming year!

    Obduction! It's made by the people that made Myst and Riven. Obduction has those same moments of wonder, cleverness, and frustrating confusion that made each title in the original Myst series a classic.

    • @LGR
      @LGR  7 років тому

    • @MrPotatoShed
      @MrPotatoShed 7 років тому

      Lazy Game Reviews If you didn't like Myst, that's fair enough, but don't let comparisons to The Witness keep you from trying it. They're completely different games.
      Plus, I've heard it's pretty amazing in VR, but right now I think it's only compatible with the Rift? I could be wrong about that one though. I don't have a VR headset yet myself. :'(

    Have you ever played Sim Farm? I've been going through my grandpa's old computer stuff as he recently passed away and found the floppies for it.
    He was a farmer his whole life, and it tickles me that he had that game. Hell, I grew up farming and Stardew Valley is my favourite game this year.

  • @Visuwyg

    Quantum Break was a fantastic off-the-wall sci-fi romp with incredible production value, american aesthetics filtered through Remedy's quirky finnish lens. The tie-in TV Series you watched between chapters was unique and made the digital characters feel unusually real - because they were. The story was really cool as well - examining an angle of time-travel not often used.

    • @LGR
      @LGR  7 років тому +8

      That was one of my biggest disappointments of 2016 :/ Unlikable characters, jarring narrative pacing, and most of all the gameplay just wasn't enjoyable to me. The story concept was neat, but overall I expected a lot more from Remedy.
      Even the developers have acknowledged this somewhat:
      www.bleedingcool.com/2016/12/29/quantum-break-developer-says-focusing-game-mechanics-future/

    • @Visuwyg
      @Visuwyg 7 років тому +1

      That's a bummer. Narratively and gameplay-wise it utterly nailed it for me. The only negatives I have is that I would have liked more fights with my whole unlocked arsenal (even a challenge mode to play around with all the powers would have been nice), and it ran like absolute garbage on my PC. It actually speaks for the game that I enjoyed it as much as I did despite the technical issues.

    The game that ended up being one of my favorites of the year was Shadow Warrior 2. It combined the fast-paced and frenetic gameplay of Doom with some of the absurdity of Borderlands but not in a way I found annoying. I believe your review was that it takes a throw everything at the wall and see what sticks and I just enjoyed the heck out of it. It's a little tricky to get started because it doesn't play like a normal FPS with low fire rates and high reload times, but once you really dig into it and get the hang of the type of gunplay and melee combat it has I just honestly can't say enough nice stuff about it.
    Not a PC game, but Dragon Quest Heroes on PS4 also grabbed my attention. It takes the Minecraft formula and uses it without being shackled the connotations that come with being Minecraft providing for a fun take on both the action RPG-genre (ala Fable, not Diablo) and block-building voxel worlds. Very recommended.

    For me, I'd include Enter the Gungeon. Its essentially Binding of Issac merged with a bullet hell and all the creepy and depressing elements swapped out with humour and bad gun puns.
    Its also hard as balls.
    Stardew Valley was also lovely because now I can play Harvest Moon on the PC without using an emulator, plus it has mods, and Pony Island was one of the cleverest games I've played in a long time, with some of the creepiest fourth wall breaking sections I've encountered.

    I would add Shadow Warrior 2 to your list. The game is influenced by Duke Nukem, Serious Sam, Doom and Borderlands. It isn't a long game (takes about 20 or so hours to finish), but it has some replay-ability. It is on sale for about $30 on Steam.
    ...I would also add Deus Ex Mankind Divided.

    Loved DooM + Dishonoured 2, quite liked Titanfall 2 + Deus Ex (apart from the end).
    But I don't consider Firewatch a Game as such, more of an Experience.
    The Turing Test was good if you like puzzles and stuff.
    Honourable mentions go to Battlefield 1 and Hitman.

    My favorite games of this year include Overwatch and Stardew Valley. My boyfriend got me Pokemon Sun for Christmas, but I'm not far enough into it to really have an opinion on it yet.

    Nice picks. In between all my jrpgs and art games, Watch Dogs 2 ended up near the top of my list some how too. It's far from a perfect game but provided an interesting and fun world and took some huge steps in the right direction. Now they just need to take their time and add more fun things like Hover boards in the next one.

    Huh, I would have thought Shadow Warrior 2 would have been mentioned. Doom meets Serious Sam meets Borderlands meets Bruce Lee.

    I feel deep into the Souls series this year. I can't quite explain it but it takes me back to 8 or 16bit gaming not because it's "hard", but because of the way the game is structured. Sure, there's difficulty when you first try the series, but after adjusting to it I really fell in love with it. Going through areas and dying a few times turned into progressively blowing through them much in the same vein as playing through a level of Castlevania or Ninja Gaiden on the nes. DS3 just knocked it out of the park for me as well I don't have the schedule to really replay a lot of games like I used to, but I put a lot of time into that game and I still could to be honest. I can see why people don't like the series and even why some people find certain entries to be polarizing (hey i liked DS2), but It helped reignite my love for gaming from what had been just something I did to pass time after work and turned it back into something I truly enjoy and have fun with.

    I though you were going to include mankind divided. I really enjoy it, even more than IW. I thought the world in this iteration was a lot more in touch with the present and also it was not as empty us the previous ones. Also in your review you showed that you really liked the game.
    Enjoy 2017!

      I really liked what little was there, yes. But it feels like the rushed "part one" of a trilogy, and the story ends so abruptly that it left an increasingly bad taste in my mouth the more I thought about it. I'll wait for the inevitable "Mankind Divided: Complete Collection" with the follow-ups included to make it a complete story before I include it on any lists!

    Anima Gate of Memories, Shadwen, Super Mario Run are my best games of 2016.
    Anima gate of memories is one of the best games I ever played and maybe the best true indie (made by 3 people) ever made.
    Shadwen is a nice little stealth game.
    Super Mario Run is really nice and fun, one of the first new quality game on mobile.
    I also played many old/not-2016 games.

    Good solid list. I can't say I agree with Firewatch, not that I don't think it is good, but I can barely call it a game. But that's just me.
    I don't have a list ready yet so I can't share it with you, but one game I know I would add is the RPG Tyranny.

    My game of the year is Severed! Such a cool game for touchscreen devices! It gave me an old school dungeon crawler feel, and I've explored every inch of this map. The world is vibrant and feels so organic, and the combat is delightfully fast paced, swiping your finger across the screen to cut off limbs and using them to upgrade your skills. And I fucking CRIED my eyes out at the end. All the characters and monsters look cool and it made me want to speedrun it even though I have no experience in speedruns and have no idea how to record from my shitty ipad!

    Surprised Last Guardian didn't make it, esp considering similar games e.g. Journey have made it in the past. It's an incredible experience, Trico can be a pain sometimes but that's part of the charm.

      Tom Fisher Yes, I've really enjoyed Overwatch. It's an incredibly well polished and balanced multiplayer experience. It's not perfect by any means, but I keep coming back to it and enjoying it when I do. I feel like a lot of the disdain for it is silly.
