Hi Kati ☺I am 60 this year and I am 2 years into my second attempt to go dye free. I kept my hair long the whole time with regular trims of the ends so I have about 2.5 inches left before I am totally dye free! 🙌 My scalp is feeling the best that it has felt in years with no more soreness or itching and my hair is looking so much more heathy and the freedom that I've found from no more constant root touch-ups is just wonderful so I am absolutely resolute this time that I am never going back to the dye ever again. I totally understand how difficult this journey is though but for me personally, it has been much easier this time as I dyed my hair much lighter this time (quite similar to yours) and the grey blended in extremely well, secondly, I already knew what I looked like with grey hair the second time so the looking in the mirror and not identifying with the person looking back at me was much easier this time so it's very much a case of learning to accept your new and authentic self and embrace who you truly are. I have followed your journey from the start and you have been a great inspiration to me so I really felt for you when I saw the video of yours announcing that you'd dyed your hair again as I know what a long road it is, I truly think you can make it this time though if you stay positive and focused on the freedom that you will have from the slavery of constant root touch-ups!!! Society tells us that grey hair symbolises old age therefore we must all dye our hair, there are many women that have proven that grey hair being synonymous with old age is not necessarily true though and they have embraced their authentic self and look absolutely terrific. Confidence comes from within and not from a bottle of dye and many of these women are brimming with confidence and don't look in the least bit old and neither did you when your hair was grey, I though you looked great. I'll continue to follow you on your journey, wishing you all the very best. Karen

The gray was lovely on you! And it will be again! I’m in my 3rd attempt, so I understand the struggle. This time I think I’ll make it. The gray coming in is so healthy and soft. I have curly hair and the curl is amazing now that I haven’t dyed. I’m about 6 months in this time, but like you, it grows fast and I’m thankful for that. I cut mine into a bob this time and I cut about an inch off every 6 weeks. Last time I cut it super short and the transition growing it out is not my cup of tea. So on top of gray coming and the short cut growing, it was hard. I like mine long also, but I’m finding a bob is helpful in making my brain believe the color will be cut off a bit sooner. Good luck. I hope you’re not hard on yourself for wavering, it’s a tough transition!

I was in a similar situation when I "stopped" dyeing my hair. This is long-winded, but I’m just going to put it all out there. Once the pandemic hit and I couldn't get my hair professionally dyed, I started doing it myself. The length of my hair was just above the middle of my back. I have stayed covid conscious, so spending 2+ hours sitting under a hair stylist's mouth was/is a no-go for me and I continued to dye my own hair after the salons opened up. So for about 1.5 years, I sectioned off and and dyed all of my dark brown hair as recommended. But after that timeframe, I decided to just dye the hair around my hairline, my part, and also sort of haphazardly colored the top layer of my hair down to my neckline. I did that for about 1.5 years, then decided to go gray on April 1, 2023 using the Dye Strip Method -- I didn't stop cold turkey because I knew that I couldn't live with the demarcation line. At that point, my hair had about 4 different colors - the dark brown dye strip at my part, older darkish brown from crown to neckline, orange-y from neck to mid back, and salt and pepper/gray underneath the top layer of all of that hair. I stopped dyeing my part in early October 2023 but occasionally used a color spray, probably until February 2024. By that point, I had enough grow-out to soften the demarcation line.
I did the big chop this past Easter when I couldn't stand the orange hair anymore and cut it into a short bob between my chin and shoulders, leaving about 1-inch (2.54 cm) of orange hair at the ends. The dye strip has now grown-out by about 4.5-inches (11.43 cm) and is just above my ears. Everything between the top of head and ears is mostly my natural dark brown with about 30% gray mixed in. The remaining dye strip (ie, everything below my ears) is oldish dyed dark brown with an orange-y hue. I estimate another 8-10 months to completely grow out the orange bits. I don't necessarily regret using the Dye Strip method, because I really couldn't deal with the stark demarcation line, but it did add time to my total grow-out.
    Good luck with your grown-out!
    From,
    another 'calico' girlie

Thank you 💖 Yes the demarcation line is hard to deal with. I haven't decided how I will deal with that this time.

@@Kati-almiel---- there's a product here in USA that is washable temporary "color" called FANCIFUL, it's like very watery hair color and you leave it in. So it comes in shades of brown. I did my transition to gray and I used a hair "topper" to cover over the demarcation line, which I call "a skunk line", haha. Okay, the topper I wore was the exact color of my dyed hair, and my hairdresser would keep trimming the bottom of my hair, shoulder length or chin length months of growth, until the whole gray grew out, took the topper off and nobody knew how I did it. I completely recommend this method. Bought my topper at Godiva's Secret Wigs online.
Hope this idea helps you and others who may read my comment! Best regards!!!

Thank you for acknowledging that it is not easy to transition to grey. I am almost at month 6 and i'm really hating the way it looks - mostly because of the old damaged coloured hair. This is truly a test in patience an not for the faint of hearted!

Kati, I was following you before you colored it. I am 6 months out and I do go through days of thinking if I should dye it again. But I like you get greys by day 10 following a color. I am loving the freedom of not havingbto go get it colored. I followed Tudor Rose. Her hair is gorgeous and it took her some time. But that is my goal! Wishing you success again!❤

I'm 65 and my hair is what call a dirty blonde so I always had highlights done. After mom passed away I decided to quit coloring my hair. I had a very short pixie so it was easy to grow it out. My problem is the top layer is still a bit darker and underneath is a beautiful silver. I'm torn between doing highlights on the top or just living with it till it goes silver like the rest.

Last time I saw a video of yours, you were quite into your gray hair journey so I was surprised her to see you starting over!
Is your dyed hair here close to your natural colour when younger? Your dyed hair colour here is a lovely colour. I've always wished I could have hair this colour! (My natural hair is a very dark brown). I also love the waves in your hair! My waves are all over the place!
I stopped dying my hair 1 year and 8 months ago, when I turned 60. I went cold turkey- cut it into a short bob and wore it pinned back or in a pony tail. (I wasn't about to spend lots of money at the hairdresser to go through the transition stage and I didn't care what people thought! As I get older, I care less what people think!) It's getting there now. I can't wait until it's finally all grown out. It's whiter which I'm happy about! It's so nice to not have to fight those white roots that were noticeable every two weeks! I could never go back to dying it!
I look forward to seeing your journey again. You can do it!

I’m 52. I have transitioned to gray two times. I’m still not happy and think about dyeing it again. I think part of it is aging and not recognizing my old self and feel frustrated with the notion that I just have to let it all go. Of course, I haven’t dyed my hair in two plus years, so I don’t remember how irritating keeping up the root dye is. I don’t know if there’s a right answer.

You look lovely with your silvers! I know, society makes it difficult for women! So in the end, we must do what gives us peace. Thank you for sharing why you're trying to let the silvers come through. I'm dark brunette, with a few silvers coming through. Been contemplating what to do for a while now. I would not be able to handle dyeing my hair and then 2 weeks, the silvers are back. This point would annoy me very much. So I've decided to use deep conditioning treatments which make the silvers look lovely amongst the brown! Best wishes. You're doing well to document this to the world! You're an inspiration!

Hello Kati I was so excited to your video. I to am on round two of growing out my grey. I had just finished watching all your old videos when you dyed to brown again and was sad for your hard work that was lost. I believe when we have our natural grey it brightens up our features. I also believe that if people can have blue pink or green hair then what does it matter if we proudly wear our natural grey 🤷🏼‍♀️. Just know that I am doing it along with you. I am now about 4-5 months in, I didn’t log when I last dyed, but I did have some of my old colour stripped out so it quite blond and not such a harsh line. I’m really looking forward to your monthly updates. Feel free to chat with me if you need support and encouragement. I’m 47 by the way 😁

I am looking forward to your updates and wishing you inner peace with your process & decisions, whatever they may be! I watched your journey the first time. I haven't found it easy either, I grew mine out for 2 years and then returned to henna. I'm not really enjoying the henna anymore but not yet ready to grow out the grey again. I have to henna the roots every 2 to 3 weeks. My hair is not as white-silver as yours, I think I am around 50% silver and the back is still light brown. I want to wait until I am 75% silver before I ditch the dye, not sure I will be patient that long. Wishing you the best of luck in this journey!

I did a good job growing mine out. My natural color is a medium brown with some red tones. But most of my gray hair was in the top and around the temples. The problem with grey or white hair in my case is that mine is finer and doesn't have waves while the rest of my hair is thick and wavy and shiny. The white hair was not as shiny. That part is annoying! it's like having two hair types on my head. Also mine is about 40% grey and all in the top part of my head with about 10% in the bottom part. What I found hard was my husband who kept telling me I would look younger with dyed hair and then my family who is in another country saying the same. I went to the UK for a wedding and before I left I dyed my hair. On the positive side I selected highlights lots of them all in the top and temples to help cover the greys. On the down side I was shocked at the damage that did. I told her not to take it all the way down (stripping) but she did anyway. One thing I hate is damaged hair and my poor white hairs were already more fragile. I am now a year out from that dying session and letting the grey grow out again. The challenge will be when I visit my family again in the UK which will be 2 years from the time of that wedding. I am determined to not be moved by them and dye it again and try to ignore my husbands comments :-( I do not have that lovely stunning grey that some women with dark hair are blessed with. I have the english rose very pale skin. My hair is long. I will be going for a trim in a few weeks my first since a year to take a few inches off the ends which are dry as straw!

I stopped dyeing my hair during the pandemic. It took about two years to go fully gray. And it’s been fully gray for about 2.5 years now. My hair is healthier than when I dyed it. But people do treat me differently. Many don’t like it. I’ve thought of dyeing it again, maybe temporarily, but the thought of growing it out again is too daunting. Overall, I do like it, but it’s not for everyone.

I can tell you DON’T CUT IT OFF. I wen to a pixie and it was cute, but my family wasn’t impressed and I felt pressured to grow it back out. It was TERRIBLE growing out that pixie cut. Having a silver pixie was extra hard. People just see OLD with short and silver hair.
