THANK YOU! I've been through several other granny square vids for beginners (me), and you have been the only one who taught me how to do this. Awesome! :o)
Thanks. Im learning again to crochet. Aim 80 and last time I crocheted it was a baby blanket for my 3rd daughter who will 47 next week. Thanks for your video. It's the 3rd one I've watched and your video was the clearest. Repetition helps I think.
I'm a knitter with minimal crochet skills. I've been trying to learn how to make Granny Squares for decades. I've tried from books and later tried from other videos, but I've always given up in frustration. I am so excited because I finally understand the construction! Thank you so much for sharing this. You are a fabulous teacher! Now I'm going to go practice.
Your tutorial is the best! I'd seen so many videos about making granny square but couldn't figure it out. Finally made my first granny square ! It took me so long but I'm so happy. Thank you so much for the well explained and amazing tutorial.
Thank you very much for making it easy to understand, corners and sides and the counting you made made it so much easier to remember. That's where I kept getting lost on all other video's, you are so wonderful !!
I was taught how to knit by my gran when I was a little girl but I recently decided to try to learn crochet. I almost gave up as the video tutorials I watched were so confusing! But then I found Leah's and the way she teaches is very easy to follow; I especially like her little mantras as they really help me. Also, her explanation of when to chain and when not to has made the art of crocheting much less puzzling to me as a complete novice. Thank you!
This is such a great tutorial. Thank you for explaining things so clearly with the sides and corners and slip stiches, and for not going too fast or too slow. I initially was chaining three before every DC and knew it didn't look right. So helpful.
Hi Leah - Thank you so much for a really EASY TO FOLLOW tutorial on the Granny Square. I sat all afternoon yesterday, LOL and well, it didn't look like a GS but I could not tell where I was going wrong. You gave an excellently slow and very well explained tutorial. It was nice that you didn't show one set and then fasten up at 100 miles an hour. I shall try again today. I am a quilter and knitter, but really wanted to make a granny square. Thank you for sharing. Linda x
Thanks for this great teaching video. I have crocheted for years, but stayed away from GS, thought they were just to fiddly, but after watching you tutorial, I have made up a couple of samples, and it was very easy. Thank you, as others have said the best video on GS.
Glad it was helpful! Granny Squares baffled me for many years until I realized I had to focus on the square shape and the corners specifically. It works!
I did it !!!.. after a weekend of making granny circles and a few pentagons... your showed me what I was doing wrong.. I was chaining 2 or 3 after every 3 dc. I finally have a square after 2 rows. I want to make sure I can master the 2 rows all of the time before I go onto more. I know your vid was posted years ago, but please know late bloomers like me are watching. Sad to hear you stopped making crochet videos -we beginners need all the help we can get !
I'm super happy to hear this! This was my one (and only) crochet video because it turns out a lot of people learning crochet are super rude commenters. Who would have thought?!
@@LeahDay oh.. I am very sorry to hear that as you are a great teacher and talented. I think YT has a feature that you can turn off all comments, just in case you have other crochet ideas to share.
It’s a bit wonky, but I made my first granny square watching your video! Thank you! I appreciate you explaining every step. I’ve only been crocheting for a week.
Leah! You are an exceptional teacher. I used to make granny squares with my Mom. That was many many years ago and she passed away in 2000. I still have one of the throws that we both made. Now I want to start again, but have totally forgotten everything I once knew. Your demo is outstanding and I can’t wait to begin crocheting again. Of course I will watch you video again and again until it sticks in my failing memory. However, you demo is exceptionally easy to understand and follow. Bless you! Linda
I have watched several videos to learn Granny Squares. I am trying to teach myself to crochet. Your video is the most understandable and easy to remember! Thank you for making it easy for a grandparent that has 3 grand kids in the same home. I can remember it and keep going through the interruptions lol. Thank you!!!!!😊
Thank you very much Amanda! Granny Squares are really great once you memorize the steps and then you'll be whipping through them with no issues with interruptions. Have fun!
your tutorial has helped me more than any other. And I've viewed many. Seems like a lot of them make it too complicated...and they all seem to vary, in how they do it. Yours is wonderfully simple, and explained so well. Thank you!!😊
Excellent! I made my first granny square. This tutorial helped me alot. I watched other tutorials but I was still getting confused also about the corners and the sides, but when you explained it that light bulb came on! I appreciate your work. Please keep them coming. Thank you.
You're super welcome! It's a tricky block to quilt without seeing it and I kept crocheting myself a messy ball when I first learned. Keep the corners really organized and it will always work out right.
This tutorial was honestly the first one to help me! I have been trying for two weeks to even just understand the Granny Square and today I actually made one! It's not very good and a bit lumpy, but it's the first successful attempt I've had!
made a cute headband/bonnet out of these {very shifty since its a very first project} but your tutorial was the first i actually managed to understand :D tysm!
Your video was the only one to helped! Other videos were chaining 2 for corners and my granny square was looking so wonky and mishapened! Tried like 4 times with no success. Yours was the first that had us chain 3 for a corner and it was a success! Made my first square in the first attempt!!!
Thank You for this tutorial!! I am new to crocheting and the Granny Square has really given me problems. Your video was so helpful and very easy to follow. I finally understand how to crochet a Granny Square!!
This is definitely the best explanation of a granny square I've seen. Thanks for taking the time to explain the "why's" - makes it much easier to know "why" as we're doing the process.
You are a very good teacher! And your video quality is great....close enough and clear enough for a newbie to see and understand. Some videos by others are not that great and it's frustrating. Keep teaching! It's your gift!
I'm new to crocheting and I've been struggling with granny squares. This is the first time I've produced a square! Thanks for the clear and very helpful video :)
omg thank you so much for this tutorial. everyone I have watched was so confusing it took forever to learn and make the blankets, this is the simplest and easiest I've found.
Thank you the tutorial was very good and I've watched it several times so I know what to do. My friend said that your tutorial was good and that it would help me. I've enjoyed looking and listening as it was very clear what was being said.
Hi there! Just wanted to say that I am have been trying to learn how to crochet and have watched numerous granny square videos and with each one, I have managed to become lost somewhere during the video. Yours, however, has resulted in my first, beautifully complete Granny Square!!! Thank you for a very easy to follow video!
Thank you so much for such a clear and easy to follow tutorial. So many videos are so confusing and hard to follow. This one is so easy to follow! The only bit I might have trouble with is using the slipstitch to get to the corner, but I think if I watch it again while I do it I'll have no trouble.
Brilliant video Leah, I am a knitter at heart....find knitting very easy...you said in your video exactly what I was thinking! I cannot get the when to chain and not to chain and when I'm attempting to do a square I haven't yet had that eureka moment of "getting it"! I will keep trying, thanks to your video 😊👍
Try to visualize the square from the first row. If you can see the corners and maintain the corners, it will become easy to know when to chain and when not to.
I'm learning how to crochet and I watched so many tutorials and yours I had the most success with I just get I little confused on the loop part. Thank you for this!
Thank you, it's a great instructional video. My husband's grand mother used cotton floss yarn and stitched across the bottoms of towels. They were so pretty. I however wasn't patient and should have watched better. Crochet and knitting are the 2 things I haven't learned. So this is very helpful.
I am so glad I found your video! I was getting so frustrated watching other tutorials. You broke this down so well I was actually able to crochet along and make a granny Square!
Thank you! I have been trying to learn granny square for 3 days! (Through a different tutorial ) Saw your tutorial and got it first time round! A little wonky but I can see it is a granny square. Very pleased. Great work. 😊😊😊
Thank you for your simplistic and slow demonstration! I do not know how to crochet and can completely follow your instructions. I wanted to make a nose warmer and searched several tutorials, but they seem to stitch so quickly I cannot follow.
Leah thank you so much for making it so easy to learn the granny square. I tried two others and was not successful in crocheting my granny square. No more confusion...
Thank you Leah you have a great tutorial its alway's the second round as you go round that confuses me but i'm sure I will get it right. I am making a bed cover at the moment it seems too be ok. But my corners are some times not quite right (haa haa ) if you know what I mean lol lol but I do keep trying. Thanks for all you great information
Like your video, absolute beginner here. but my square is actually more of an oblong circular creation. Think I’ve done too many chains instead of waiting for corners, will just keep going and try to make into a square. I’ve been turning playback speed slower so I can watch and try and keep up. You need to tug on the corners that are chained to make it more of a square shape from the beginning. Remember you ONLY chain in the corners, not the sides. Double check your stitches to see if there is a mistake.

You really have to focus on the corners and remember to chain three there otherwise you won't create the square pattern properly. Good luck!
Excellent directions. I’m a beginner.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Like your video, absolute beginner here. but my square is actually more of an oblong circular creation. Think I’ve done too many chains instead of waiting for corners, will just keep going and try to make into a square. I’ve been turning playback speed slower so I can watch and try and keep up. Thanks :)
Yep, it sounds like you've done chains in the wrong places. Only in the corners.
Thank you so much for explaining so well how to do this! 😁
You're very welcome Leah! Please share it with your friends!
How can I add different colors?thank you for this tutorial you are the best
You can add a new color when you slip stitch to begin the next row. Hiding the thread tails is a bit tricky because of the open spaces.
I've browed for beginner crochet, and I've just happened on your site. Now I'm confused. Question about your chain: You seem to put your hook on the right side of the yarn and pull it through. Other videos put the hook on the left side of the yarn, go under and pull through. Is either way acceptable to make a chain? Thank you.
Yes, either way is fine. A chain is a chain stitch. Grab the yarn and pull it through. It does not matter which side or angle the yarn is pulled from.
I'm a beginner and love this video!!!
Thank you!
first In my life, I am able to do this. thanx dear.

Wow spent a lifetime chaining one on the sides and chaining two on corners. Comes out the same however at least can’t tell the difference in the granny square. Learn different things all the time.
I don't think there's a 100% right or wrong way to do it! This is just the method I like for turning the corners with an obvious corner.
Hello..approximately how many squares to make about a double size throw?
That depends on the size of your squares... and the size of your yarn and the hook. Make a few squares and measure them, then divide the size of blanket you want by the size of squares - 80 / 4 = 20 squares
@Leah Day ohhh..duhh..lol..thanks a bunch!! I hope it rurns out..I'll post a pic when finished..lol..could be a while..lol..150 squares!!!
I love this tutourial - this has kick started a nice big blanket for my daughter 😍

What is the size of the needle to use?.
Is it plastic or metal needle is good
the first 8 minutes of the video, when I finished doing everything... it looked like a circle. is it because im making my chains too loose or is it something else?
You need to tug on the corners that are chained to make it more of a square shape from the beginning. Remember you ONLY chain in the corners, not the sides. Double check your stitches to see if there is a mistake.
Hi Leah Day I have been trying to crochet rectangle in a granny square pattern but I don't know how to start the pattern so is any way you could do a video on how to start the pattern sorry I don't know how to read the pattern on pattern Thank you soon much.
I'm sorry, but crochet is not the focus of my videos. I'm honestly not sure how to make a granny square into a rectangle.
At some point, you will no longer need to cross stitch or flip correct? When I was young my mom would start it for me and i would finish a blanket. I never cross stitched or had to flip.
There are probably a million ways to crochet this block. You can of course change the method to fit your needs.
Thank you so much for this video! You explain it so clearly, I finally understand how to crochet a granny square!
Thankyou so much easier than my method x
You have an awesome video. Thank you for the lesson on granny squares.
Aw! Thank you!
Lora Massegee I
Great tutorial! I got it on the first few tries.
How would you make the square bigger? I want mine to be about 3.5 inches.
Just keep adding more rows - chain 3 to start the next row, then 3 DC into each open space, then in the corners 3 DC, Ch3, 3 DC to turn the corner. You can keep adding more rows and you can change colors too and make an entire blanket with just this one square pattern.
Thank you!!! This was so easy to follow along with!
