You definitely should watch the Rose of Versailles. Top tier historical anime alongside Vinland Saga, Apothecary Diaries, Orb and Kingdom (moreso the manga).
i recommend watching a video on osamu tezuka, without him we wouldn't have manga AND anime as we have today, the amount of stuff he created was insane, more than 700 volumes during his lifetime, and he personally did anime with his own studio too on the side! He touched all genre, from kids manga to shonen to shojo to seinen to even erotic stuff! And most of it was really good too, his seinen period was the best imo
The last sentence is especially true when you consider said period gave us Ayako, Apollo's Song and MW as well as the short story collections Under the Air and Clockwork Apple.
Since it’s mentioned in the video I definitely recommend The Rose of Versailles reactions at some point. Perfect timing too since there’s an upcoming movie.
Rose of Versailles is a must. For all that say shoujo is romance anime check it out and rethink your statement. This anime is depicting late 18th century France, the intrigue, politics, action, identity searching, social differences, betrayals + some romance. Bring a box of tissues.
With this much of a deep dive, I'm surprised Spice and Wolf (medieval Europe) and Violet Evergarden (German/Austrian place names) weren't brought up in the modern section. Also, it doesn't matter about the Rose of Versailles spoilers. You should still watch/read it anyway.
Oh, true! I've heard great things about Violet Evergarden and I absolutely loved the original two seasons of Spice and Wolf. It's a very charming series with a medieval aesthetic. I'm loving the Rose of Versailles appreciation in these comments! Always feels like an upwards battle recommending shojo, since it is so niche in the West.
As somebody who grew up in Austria, obviously I watched Heidi back in the day, the German dub of it to be exact. The source material is popular here after all as well. And yeah, nobody knew this was a Japanese show back then. It was just another Cartoon. The first time Anime was called out as Anime here was when Dragon Ball and Pokemon started airing here towards the end of the 90s. Also, I find it incredibly fun every time there's random German in Anime today. Like with every single name in Frieren being German words.
Yup, I'm from Austria as well and for the LONGEST time I thought Heidi was a European cartoon haha and ngl seeing so much German in anime makes me cringe at times lol
The official animation of the World Masterpiece Theater is currently available for free on UA-cam. There are many other interesting works besides Haiji that I would like to recommend to the people reading this comment section.😊
The irony behind Japan's popularity for Cosplay is that the Origins of cosplay itself actual started in America. The first (cosplay) came from the 1st World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon), held on 2-4 July 1939 in the Caravan Hall in New York City, United States, in conjunction with the New York World's Fair. The phrase was later coined in Japan after the Worldcon of 1984 in Los Angeles.
The two I would recommend highly with this sort of topic present: 1. How American Animation Influenced Anime by KaiserBeamz 2. How Anime Influenced Western Animation by Internet Pitstop Both are really informative in how Anime developed and the shared influence between Eastern and Western animation. They may not have the views that Soak has with this video, but they are very well crafted videos that give a broader picture of anime's history.
The idea of exploration of taboo themes is very intersting topic indeed, because it also is a huge reason for the sci-fi boom in anime at some point and the relationship between the sci-fi and mecha genres with highly political, war stories. Because setting these stories in space did give more freedom to talk about still recent at that point in time memories of WWII or critiques on government and politics. And yeah, Isekai's seem very popular right now, but I wish you could get some more variety in your anime experience, to be honest. There is still such a big world of crazy good anime out there and I feel it's a shame you're kind of cornered in one genre, that in itself, isn't even particularly ambitious. I like to call it "anime fast food", because most of the isekai shows I've seen are light, easy to turn off your brain while watching but lack substance that would make them memorable for me or leave any impact. And don't get me wrong, I used to adore the isekai trope in anime, before it became genre. But the current trends make me a little uncomfortable, and the direction of the whole anime industry doesn't look great right now, with the insane work conditions of animators and expectations for shows that can never be met in a reasonable budget, not to mention the catering to the audience outside japan feels kind of like it gives less opportunities to actually learn about japanese culture from these shows, which got me into anime in the first place. Butthat's only my own opinion of course, everyone has their own and if you're happy with staying in the isekai corner then who am I to tell you to get out of it ^^;

Oh, and on the note of you having watched SO MUCH Isekai: You indeed have watched a lot of Isekai. About 1/3 of all shows you watched have been Isekai. And it is definitely one of the most populated genres. Every season I watch at least one completely new Isekai show, it feels like.
There are definitely a healthy chunk of isekai out there where the protagonist isn't unemployed (or a student, since that's too easy). Slime is usually the third isekai I think of, and the guy gets stabbed while meeting with a co-worker. There's also pretty much an entire sub-genre of "I used to work as X and then I got isekai'd so now I use my job experience in a fantasy world". I've seen a few that were game dev gets isekai'd into their own game, which is a pretty easy way for them to go power fantasy through "the protagonist knows all the exploits". But yeah, the early days of isekai were very much a means of escapism from people who were depressed and sick of life, and wanted something more magical (whether this was the author writing their own fantasies out, or if they were trying to be an outlet for others living through hard times). But the isekai trend blew up so hard, it didn't take long for parody and more creative twists to crop up.
A lot of romance anime in the 70's-80's were referencing French names or themes linked to France since it lent itself well to romance and there was a huge French market for anime in the 70's - 80's due to the show Grandizer (or goldorak) doing exceptionally well So kind of a double whammy with what was said in the video. It even got a live-action adaptation - quite an old one, too! 32:30 Especially with the unrrelated Ace Attorney footage, I'm surprised Professor Layton didn't get a shout in the gaming section! It's a great puzzle game series with a really whimsical, charming take on England. It and Ace Attorney (the latter of which did have an anime and is a lawyer visual novel) had a crossover game. Would also have been good to bring up Berserk, its own crossing of gender and taboo subjects, and how it was inspired by the very boundary-crossing shojo manga discussed (like RoV).
