Man, they just don't write songs like this anymore. The 70's and 80's were freaking amazing. I am so ready to go back. So happy that I got to experience those decades first hand.
MARCH 4, 2023: Today is Chris Rea's 72d birthday. Wishing him a great new year of endless happiness, good health, and good fortune. Chris, you will always have our undying love, loyalty, respect and appreciation!! Please continue to grace us with your music. Never give up; never give in.
October 1978 we were 23 years old. Heaven and existing as young adults in the 1970's. We did not know how fortunate we were. We have to thank Chris Rhea and others for those past reminders how lucky we are in these sad modern times. So glad we were there for ever and ever. Jackie and Steve.
This is another song that you remember sounding extraordinary when you first heard it back in the 70's and to hear it today it just amazes with that voice.
thank you so much UA-cam for taking someone like me a lady that is 56 years old to be able to try travel back in time to the 70s at a push of a button and listen to such great music that takes me back to my teenage years
This song will forever remind me of my senior year in HS (1979). The puppy-love relationship that brought me so much anxiety and angst then is the one I remember so fondly today. I owe Chris Rea a debt of gratitude for these memories and for penning one of my fave songs of all time.
How do you have fond memories if it gave you all that anxiety though? I ask cause those memories are my absoulute worse, they actually bring me anxiety today, .lol
@@JaneCooper190072 The stronger the love the deeper the pain in letting go of it. Though the pain is one you wouldn’t wish on your enemy, the memory of the experience of such a great love makes it worth it. I once knew a man for only 4 months but the love was so strong it took me 20 years to stop hurting after he walked away. It’s all an illusion and we cause ourselves our own pain but it’s just one of those tough life lessons.
NEARLY ALL 1970's songs have become ICONIC and historic in the music world. Beyond that, I don't have another comment. I'm in COlorado, just waiting for the "special" brownie store to legally open ! PROP 64 passed
First heard on the radio aboard the Greyhound bus in October 1978, heading west from Quebec to Vancouver Island after an autumn harvesting wheat in Saskatchewan as part of a North American adventure, far from the land down under, Chris Rea was a young northern British pop musician writing his own songs, breaking into the US market and this very catchy piece was written for his 17 year old sister, who had just suffered the break up of her first serious affair, but as Chris sings, "Fool if you think its over, its only just begun". Thus this very memorable moment of the glorious 1970s, began a long creative career for Chris Rea, unfortunately interrupted by serious illness, but Chris persevered, and has given us a magnificent repertoire of evocative music for those special times back when life was both a pleasure and an adventure to be celebrated, including "Driving Home for Christmas" and "On the Beach", before the planet became crowded out and overwhelmed, so thank you Chris for braving your battles, coming through and providing such wonderful memories from a time long gone, but relished by us who were there.
I wish life was still as simple as it was during the 70s & 80s. Thanks God for the good memories and quality of life when humanity cared for one another. Is this your favorite song?

This song touches a place in the soul that is indescribable!! This is also "THE" love song for a broken heart. I can feel not only the pain I have endured in this song... but the pain of others as well. Doesn't get any deeper...just nothing else like it!!
What a beautiful comment! This song does touch a place in the soul that is indescribable. I am older now and know that the words in this song were so wise. It feels like the end of the world when you lose the one you love. But the lyrics are so true. It hurts so much but you do get over it and move on. Just a brilliant, timeless song.
Chris Rea is adorable in this video. Like all of you, I would love to go back to the late 70s. I've exposed my children to great songs like this. Nothing today can compete. This is on my top ten favorite songs.
Fell in love with his voice first time I heard this. What a great talent this man still is. Sad his health has taken such a toll but so happy he has survived.
I have nothing but thee utmost respect for this man . . Chris always wanted to be a pop star but never ever saw himself as one although he was hugely talented at writing songs and had one of the best singing voices you could imagine. Although lately Chris has been through the mill with regards his health and is now a shadow of his former self but still is fighting and enjoying life . . God bless you Chris your an absolute legend.
I agree..yes he is saying"Look at me, yes this is my song!" And he should...he knew he had a hit there and I can't even find the words to describe how this song touches me. I was a little girl when it came out but I can only imagine being around 17 and hearing this around the time of a heartbreak. CRUSHING...but also magical!! He's so cute here and everything about his voice, the lyrics and museic is perfection at it's finest!! : )

Fascinating that Chris Rea already had that raspy voice at the age of 27, an absolutely unique artist.
