"Newborn eyes always cry with pain first look at the morning sun Fool, if you think it's OVER...its just BEGUN"!!! One of the greatest lyrics EVER written from the 70's!
The song's lyric came out of conversations Rea had with his younger sister, who was dealing with her first breakup. He assured her that her life was not over, even though it felt that way. This was the first single from Chris Rea's major-label debut album. Surprisingly, it initially made little impact in his native Great Britain, but was a big hit in the United States, where it peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent three weeks at #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It later scored on the British charts, where it peaked at #30. In America, it is by far Rea's best-known song - he never again made it higher than #44 ("Diamonds") on the Hot 100. In the UK, he fared much better, becoming a consistent hit-maker by the mid-'80s. Two of his albums, The Road to Hell (1989) and Auberge (1991), went to #1 in Britain.

This has probably been mentioned .. but worth again .. He wrote this for his sister who was stood up at the alter (back in Ireland) and a friend heard the song and couldn't convince Chris to release it. (It WAS his personal song to sis!) Eventually, it somehow found its way to a label ... and the rest .. What a talented guy!

Did you lecture in Ulaan Bator in Outer Mongolia comparing Ancient Korean with Mongolian? Well I did. So who’s the moron?
I always cry with this song. It reminds me of a 14 years hot and cold relationship... it ended and I felt like my whole world crumbled... months depressed. A year and a half later, when my heart had healed, I met this wonderful man who has taught me what real love is. I was a fool cause I thought it was over but it had just begun... but I still cry bc that pain I felt was so real and not deserved.

Ya-- I knew so many in the small city where I have lived for 27 years but most have also crossed over. Now I feel pretty much alone. I reflect back when we were lived in harmony, in trust and enjoyed good, innocent times. Now we self distance watching compassion and hope evaporate. They are creating a vacuum where can't breathe with their boots on our necks targeting our very souls. I'm glad I'm old.
@@rwboa22 I'm in my early 70s so I add to your list the 40s and 50s as well. Mid 80s and beyond -- overproduced crap with only a few listenable songs thrown in; then came rap and it WAS 'a wrap'. However, 60s, 70s and 80s had so many genres from which to choose which made for great competition and great composition. As the song goes, "Those Were The Days", constructive and not destructive.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you on that statement. The 1970’s were the decade of the Son of Sam murders, oil embargo, President Nixon’s resigning from office, Vietnam war vets coming back to the US with major PTSD, cocaine and heroin running rampant, the decadence of Studio 54, Disco(sic), crazy cults like the “Moonies”, etc... just remember it was nicknamed the “Me” generation for a reason.
Beautuful song sung so perfectly. I was told he wrote this song for his sister who was suffering a great deal due to a very painful break up. What an incredible sensitive, talented first class gentleman.
The first song I heard by Chris Rea. Since that time so many years ago, I have followed this uber talented genius. I am familiar with hundreds of his songs and have virtually every one. I never tire of them. He is prolific, he is profound. He is a one in a lifetime talent. Every song is truly HIS song. He does it all, always has and that is remarkable. I could go on forever on this man's talent but his songs speak for themselves, each and everyone!!!! Thank you for this post.
brent hoffman Because of the old film, Misery, I probably dare not risk saying something like this but... "I am his biggest, number one fan!!!!" Did I just "say" that? Oops. Thanks for your comment.
***** So right, he is, no other word will do, amazing. People just do not normally have so much talent. Every song, every note, his own. I saw an interview, or have read, that he said he has songs in his mind all the time. He awakens with them. I cannot imagine such creativity, but I am grateful he has it and I, among many others, have been the recipient of all that genius; the pleasure of listening to all the varied and wondrous songs by Chris Rea. Thank you for commenting.

And there is not much about popular music that does amaze me these days.

Chris is such kind and sensitive guy. Every one of his songs are so full of emotion. Plus talent to boot. I have loved him since the moment I first heard him. I was almost 12 years old when this song first came out. This is one of my many favorite songs of Chris'.
With his finely honed sandpaper voice and the Bossa Nova underscore, it was an irresistible hit. The Xylophones and Casual Sax licks just made it all the more of an early Spring late Afternoon Delight favorite
Summer 1978. Tough year. 22 years old and trying to support myself solely while getting an MBA. Struggled with be accepted socially. This song kind of sums it all up.
I was a teenager in the seventies and it was the best of times even with a broken heart. I too was heartbroken and crying over a young man who did not treat me well, as I cried I looked up to Heaven and all of a sudden I just stop crying. At that moment all my sadness went away as if God dried my tears. From then on I was over him and a few months later I saw him and he looked sad and depressed, I felt compassion for him and wished him well as I left.
Angel Sager, your mom probably did it for a good cause. Chris Rea's song, "Fool If You Think is Over," is a sad, but beautiful song, at the same time. May God bless you and your mother.
The 70s are everything! I don't know what people are talking about on the Superbowl halftime. They should have had artists from the 70s. Then they'd have something to talk about. It's just sad that they don't know any better.
It took almost 5 yrs to go by and lots and lots of tears to understand that the one i cried over for marrying somebody else was not the right one- maturity and years helped me see it never would have worked between us
I am so sorry to hear about this. I remember crying over mine too for being a liar and a cheater. But no more, my life has moved forward with my PhD graduation later this year.
This was written for his little sister who was suffering from a broken heart. Now that is a cool older brother.

I'm telling you the 70s music was the best I lived and stell live it
This has probably been mentioned .. but worth again ..
He wrote this for his sister who was stood up at the alter (back in Ireland) and a friend heard the song and couldn't convince Chris to release it. (It WAS his personal song to sis!) Eventually, it somehow found its way to a label ... and the rest .. What a talented guy!

Dyin' flame, you're free again
Who could love, do that to you
All dressed in black, he won't be comin' back
Look, save your tears
Got years and years
The pains of 17s
Unreal they're only dreams
Save your cryin' for the day
Fool, if you think it's over
'Cause you said goodbye
Fool, if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
First, look at the mornin' sun
Fool, if you think it's over
It's just begun
Miss Teenage Dream, such a tragic scene
He knocked your crown and ran away
First wound of pride, and how you cried and cried
But save your tears, got years and years
Fool, if you think it's over
'Cause you said goodbye
Fool, if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
(Fool, if you think it's over)
(Fool, if you think it's over)
I'll buy you first good wine
We'll have a real good time
Save your cryin' for the day
That may not come
But anyone who had to pay
Would laugh at you and say
Fool, if you think it's over
'Cause you said goodbye
Fool, if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
First, look at the mornin' sun
Fool, if you think it's over
It's just begun
I'll buy you first good wine (Fool if you think it's over)
Ooh, we'll have a real good time
Save your cryin' for the day (Fool if you think it's over)
New born eyes always cry with pain
First, look at the mornin' sun
Fool, if you think it's over
It's just begun
Thank you 😊
Appreciate it, thanks
When one of my daughters was 17 with a broken heart, I played her this song. Through the tears, she smiled a little. This song is now our song.

Stuck in the 70s forever! Long live 70s music
You're not alone.

What a nice guy, wearing the scarf his mum knitted for him.
The scarf made me think of the Dr. Who show that was so popular! Always loved this song.
hilarious! I was just thinking the same thing! That damn ugly scarf ruins the video haha!
It's probably cold in the studio hahaha
Lol..it was the 70s big scarfs were in style in that time.

Im stuck in the 70's with songs like this. Nobody sings songs like this any more. Cheers! to the 70's.
Old Boomer here. I loved living during the 70s. Great music.
Agree me too.
Just goes to prove you can have any gimmicks you want to do a song but only pure talent succeeds
“I think it’s a miracle that Chris Rea has managed to bring us such uplifting music despite suffering health problems “
Chris is such a talented man. Love his voice, too.
A timeless classic that means more than most casual listeners will ever realize from one of the most underrated musicians. Thank You Chris.
Born in late '76, yet this is way better than that garbage they play today.
This song by Chris Rea is a classic. Never boring listening to this song. What a beautiful song.
Try it with out the words ?????? See how pretty it is now ??????
Chris was the sweet older brother. He wrote this for his younger sister. When she was 17, her boyfriend broke up with her. "Knocked your crown and ran away...First wound of pride..."

Ya-- I knew so many in the small city where I have lived for 27 years but most have also crossed over. Now I feel pretty much alone. I reflect back when we were lived in harmony, in trust and
enjoyed good, innocent times. Now we self distance watching compassion and hope evaporate. They are creating a vacuum where can't breathe with their boots on our necks targeting our very souls. I'm glad I'm old.

Then 70's had so many wonderful songs from such varied genre, this one rightfully belongs among them.
I'm 44, pushing 45 and I will listen to '60s, '70s, and early '80s music well before I listen to anything from the '90s and today.
Totally agree.
The 70's the age of innocence.
If I could only get away from the nightmare I live in now. Internet, me,me,me,working for the man dying like a dog, greed, no morales, society hits new low😢 Trumpism, corruption, no one talks to one another......oh and the music $ucks. 10/2019, 70's were the BEST💜👍🎶🎶☝

Correct ,,,very talented musician,,cheers Martha
brent hoffman Because of the old film, Misery, I probably dare not risk saying something like this but...

I have been playing and listening to popular music for most of my 62 years. This is one of the best voices I have heard. It's got that rasp of a fuss tone pedal and yet it's got a clarity that pierces through to a remarkable high range. Why this guy it not a household name amazes me. And there is not much about popular music that does amaze me these days.

Whenever I listen to Chris Rea`s songs, I wish I had an old classic car like a Chevrolet, driving along the highways of America.
Got out of the Navy in 1972. Bought a new 72 Malibu red coupe. I will never forget looking out the window of the radio station where I was working to see my beautiful blond girlfrend spread eagle on the hood when she saw my new ride. Aw man..it goes by so damn fast. Got married to someone else in the late 70's, divorced mid 80's and lived life all over again. Great music, great clubs and dancing every weekend.

1978 was the best year of my life. Wish I had a time machine!
I wish I could time trip to 1970 and stay the whole decade!
My mom played this for me when me and my first boyfriend broke up

The 70s are everything! I don't know what people are talking about on the Superbowl halftime. They should have had artists from the 70s. Then they'd have something to talk about. It's just sad that they don't know any better.
Your wisdom is shining thru with that statement!
With that feathered hair, he takes me back. Almost looks like Keith Partridge. LOL Miss the days when the sax was a big part of '70s music.
It took almost 5 yrs to go by and lots and lots of tears to understand that the one i cried over for marrying somebody else was not the right one- maturity and years helped me see it never would have worked between us
hope your well and happy - thinking for you .
