Fix corrupted project file that won't open and keeps crashing in DaVinci Resolve

- In this video we use DB Browser for SQLite to fix a corrupted DaVinci Resolve project file.

I had similar issue, this helps in opening project but timeline is not recovered. I then disconnected the hard drives containing data, then opened the project . Deleted the problematic fusion composition and reopened the project after reconnecting hard drives. It worked.

IF YOU CAN OPEN THE PROJECT FILE BUT CAN'T OPEN THE TIMELINE, THEN DO THIS:
1. Follow the tutorial to open the project file
2. Under "PLAYBACK," set render cache to "NONE," "DELETE RENDER CACHE" in the same tab, set Fusion Memory Cache to "OFF," (idk if this helps but I did it anyways)
3. Make sure your Davinci is updated to 17.4 (my current version, newer versions probably work too)
4. Create and OPEN a new timeline (THIS STEP IS IMPORTANT!)
5. Right-click the CORRUPTED timeline and click "COMPARE WITH CURRENT TIMELINE"
6. You will see the corrupted timeline open, make sure that the timeline cursor or playback slider is on the left side of that mini timeline
7. Right-click anywhere inside that mini timeline while hovering over the corrupted timeline
8. Click "ACCEPT CHANGE," then click "CLOSE" on the bottom right of that menu
9. Quickly DISABLE all the clips using the menu on the bottom left of the timeline. This button should be called "DISABLE VIDEO TRACK"
10. Finally, DELETE the faulty fusion edit / composition
I can't right click the corrupted timeline :(
Edit : so, I can confirm backups do work perfectly. I reproduced the problem while editing again my video (after only 2 hours of work...). Luckily I had backups. The problem happened when I loaded a VST effect to add reverb on an audio file. I think it can be deleted manually from the database, although I don't have time to try. But someone having the problem may want to try. Another idea : delete the .dll of the VST to prevent it from loading, maybe ?

Impressive how you even know where to look for things like this. I consider myself computer savvy but know nothing about this wizardry. Just switched my computer and it hadn't crossed my mind that i had to turn on backups in the menues last time i Installed Davinci. Interesting choice by BM to harbor the lifeboats by default.

This worked perfectly for my issue! And it works awesome for Mac users as well. I set my timeline resolution to 5k and it caused my project to crash on startup. After doing this, I was able to delete the problematic project and keep on working. Thank you!!!

You are a lifesaver. Thank you. Mine was hanging every time I tried to open a project. I changed the DB as you suggested which allowed me to go in and delete the clip I'd been working on in fusion. So I still lost that, but it could have been a lot worse. Autosave enabled. Dunno why it isn't by default.

Dude. Life saver. Thank you! For me the current timeline index was already at 0 and changing it to anything else resulted in no data opening opening the project. However, changing it back to zero did the trick and it opened fine. I then deleted that last work i did and didn't have a problem again. Thank YOU!

THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH! It is 9:00pm, and I have to be done with my video by tomorrow. On top of that, I leave for a flight at 2:00am, so I really need to get to bed. Perfect! One of my projects was not loading, but I totally forgot the backup feature. The option is enabled, but I didn't remember to right click on the project and open a previous backup. That was more than enough :D

Rushing on projects and all of a sudden the projects could not open, wasted most of the time flushing the cacheclips, media files etc. and even go to the length of reinstalling the software itself. Your method IS A LIFE SAVER!!! THANKYOU!!! Should have try your method sooner!

This video was a lifesaver! In my project, I made a change, saved, then exited. Everything seemed OK. Then, when I tried to re-open the project in DVR, I got the dreaded "hang at 100% load". Oh no!
Fortunately, modifying the active timeline index in the sqlite db did the trick! I was able to load my project, delete the corrupted timeline, and continue working. This sqlite-surgery trick you suggested saved me from re-doing about ~5-6 hours of work! Thank you for this tip :)
After this experience, I've bumped up my project auto-backup to do it substantially more often + more, haha. Scary!

I remembered that I downloaded the same software for mac and followed the instructions carefully and the problem was solved, I don't remember every detail of it but try following all of the instructions given in the video and if you still couldn't do it maybe you can ask me.

@@farrfilms7225 in my case, there is fusion composition in my timeline, which caused the crash when Resolve trying to open it. So I changed the current timeline to a different one instead of the the problematic one.

Thank you for your great post that might work for a broad range of similar situations! One additional note: in one similar situation I was able to recover a project by simply deleting the content of the OptimizedMedia directory.

This should be the first thing everybody who used Davinci Resolve learns when they install the application. Well done "Essential Video Editing" EDIT: Before delete the number in the database recall what it was so that you can disable that timeline to prevent "accidents" in the future.

Hey! My Davinci crashes when i try to right click on the timeline and try out your suggestion for duplicating it. Do you have any fixes for that? I tried to disable all fusion effects as well. Thanks in advance!
In my case while opening the project Resolve tried to render stuff it couldn't render immediately because of the position of the playhead. In the database the value was already 0 so I changed it to 6 and it opened a new timeline without crashing, so then I deleted the problematic stuff from media explorer and everything worked!

Saved my project. Cant thank you enough. Didnt save my timeline but i changed to open cl, deleted the problematic clips, rendered and problem was fixed but i couldnt even open the project tried restarting davinci, my computer and even uninstalled davinci nothing could get my project opened but this worked.

My project doesn't crash, it just says that it can't open. The timeline DB mod doesn't help. Any idea what I could try?

Thank you so much! For anyone else who wants to save the timeline still, you can copy and paste it and the new copy should be openable. From there, delete the picture or video which is corrupted (in my case it was a jpeg) from anywhere on the project (BE VERY CAREFUL TO NOT CLICK ON THE PICTURE IN THE TIMELINE) and instead of clicking the jpeg, drag the size bar to shrink it until it is just gone. If you click on it at all the project will crash again. It is a very strange bug.
