- George Gershwin: “The Man I Love”
Kirsten MacKinnon, soprano
Mikael Eliasen, piano
Performed on Friday, January 15, 2016
Field Concert Hall, Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia
One of the most prolific American songwriting duos, brothers George and Ira Gershwin left an opus of jazz standards and “American Songbook” classics that would go on to be recorded and reinterpreted by nearly every prominent jazz artist of the 20th century. George Gershwin, of course, is well known among classical musicians for his innovative compositions that blended jazz and classical music, including Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris. Ira’s importance as a lyricist is equally celebrated in the world of musical theatre. In addition to collaborating with George on over a dozen Broadway shows, including the groundbreaking opera Porgy and Bess, Ira also penned lyrics for a number of hit songs by other notable composers, such as Kurt Weill and Harold Arlen.
Like many of the Gershwins’ songs, “The Man I Love” has gone on to great acclaim independent of its inclusion in any major musical. Originally written for the satirical show Lady, Be Good, it was cut from the score, as well as from several other musicals, as the Gershwin brothers attempted to find the right show for the song. This did not hurt the song’s popularity, though, and after establishing itself as yet another classic love song, “The Man I Love” found its home in a 1947 film by the same name, based in no small part on the song itself. Like “Someone to Watch Over Me” ( • GERSHWIN - "Someone to... ), “The Man I Love” is sung by a character eager to find love, but in this case, she takes a more positive and hopeful approach, looking forward to each upcoming day when the right man might come into her life.
The pianist stole my heart ❤️ great performance!
What a gorgeous, vibrant voice and nuanced performance
What a voice 🪽
Ohmygosh, who would give this lady a thumbs-down? Really?
OH NO. All the troubles on earth, yet she rises, comes forth to bring such Joy. I shall see if she has CD's, shortly.
Thank you, Curtis Institute of Music. And Ms. MacKinnon. Big hug, in spirit.
I accidentally gave someone a thumbs down (okay, I gave it to myself) - because my finger twitched at the wrong moment. Then I couldn't undo it. Might be the case here. Either that, or someone has a bias towards the jazzy version. I think this is gorgeous.
How sweet of you to write that. I admire the confidence it takes to perform before others plus the passion behind learning from all the training that is involved. Amazing. Yes, quite gorgeous. Stay well.
Are you really asking it, or are you just pssd off? Other people might have different standards, different from yours. Be open-minded and admit the fact no-one must see things "your way".
And no, I did not give it thumbs down. Just saying how I feel about your comment.
Espectacular
Klassik
Now I can say that I heard all the versions of this song.
That was beautiful, very emotional. Thank you.
Learning this tune as a jazz musician. First time listening to the song.
Beautiful
Amazingly beautiful, thank you!
(Verse)
When the mellow moon begins to beam
Every night I dream a little dream
And, of course, Prince Charming is the theme
The he
For me
Although I realize as well as you
It is seldom that a dream comes true
To me it's clear
That he'll appear
(Chorus)
Some day he'll come along
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay
He'll look at me and smile
I'll understand
And in a little while
He'll take my hand
And though it seems absurd
I know we both won't say a word
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
He'll build a little home
Just meant for two
From which I'll never roam
Who would-would you?
And so all else above
I'm dreaming of the man I love
(Instrumental break)
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
He'll build a little home
Just meant for two
From which I'll never roam
Who would-would you?
And so all else above
I'm dreaming of the man I love
Thank you so much ^~^

Does anyone have a recording of Joyce Didonato singing this? There used to be one on UA-cam but I believe it was deleted
Wow, academic vocal...
Hello, very nice, can you tell me please, where I can find a note of this song ?
Someday he'll come along
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay
He'll look at me and smile
I'll understand
And in a little while
He'll take my hand
And though it seems absurd
I know we both won't say a word
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
He'll build a little home
Just meant for two
From which I'll never roam
Who would, would you
And so, all else above
I'm waiting for the man I love
He'll build a little home
Just meant for two
From which I'll never roam
Who would, would you
And so, all else above
I'm waiting for the man I love

For me it belongs to the "lighter" music not opera.
This is one of the greatest love songs of all. But the performers make a taffy pull of it. The pianist plays most unidiomatically, & the singer is not better. They make a mash of Gershwin, who rolls over in his grave. This is surely one of the worst performances of Gershwin that's been inflicted on the world
shut up Ronald
I just had to come back, because this is the tackiest, most unidiomatic, & least respectful performance of this classic song I have ever heard (& I've heard plenty--not only that, I play the Gershwin songbook arrangements for piano, including this!). I just cannot believe that such a poor & disrespectful performance that is so totally lacking in sympathy for the composer's intentions or understanding of this song's rich poetry, could be put up on You Tube with apparent pride. You should be ashamed of yourself, wrong notes and all.
We get it, dude. You don't like this recording. You're either a troll for coming back and writing another rude and negative comment, or you really have nothing going on in your life that is more important. Regardless of which of these is true of you, I'd like you to do a little research and discover the meaning of the word "arrangement". And speaking of "apparent pride", you talk with a lot of confidence for someone who is so completely ignorant.
I’m trying to understand why so many ppl take issue with this rendition. I was under the impression that this was how it is performed in the opera.
@@jamilabrownie Jamila, "The Man I Love" was not introduced in an opera. It is a "standard" of The Great American Songbook," and to perform it idiomatically, I think you should make a study of the Gershwin style--or perhaps listen to some of the classic, old recordings from the 30s. Helen Morgan would be a good place to start. I hope this helps. Good luck, & happy listening!
@@fr.paulmartin6314 yes I realized my mistake soon after. For some reason I thought this song was from Porgy and Bess
I think this actually is a beautiful rendition by the singer of this Gershwin classic and truly believe there is room in our universe for more than one interpretation of this song. Wish I knew this singer’s name!
The singing ruined it.
