  • HG Morton is something else. . . founder of an organization advocating for the domination of women in the home, he spouts off views that were outmoded in 1959 (just listen to the audience groans). Today he comes off as a misogynistic nut job.
COUPLE #1: Mildred Gilmore, private detective / Hugh Langtree
COUPLE #2: Anna Melchizedek / HG Morton, management consultant and misogynist

In their on air banter, Groucho gives Fenneman a hard time, but he stayed the entire run, so it couldn't have created any bad feelings. I'm sure that behind the scenes, they had a good working relationship.

Anyone on that show surely must have been grilled beforehand, don't take anything too seriously. Fenneman I suspect was well used to Groucho and knew how to play the straight man.

You folks need have a drink and relax. This guy is a transparent put on; and he even has a hard time avoiding laughing at himself. He is deliberately chosen the most absurd ideas to promote and nobody is taking him seriously except the humourless viewers. He appears in two episodes. The first episode got an enormous response by mail from women; most of whom stated they had fallen in love with him. In his second appearence he is teamed with a woman who is prepared to vigorously retort his ideas. At no time does he display any "attitude" towards her, and, in fact, he is extremely cordial without any hint of chauvanism. Of course it is the folly of the time that one can just arbitrarily judge human behavior from a different era and assume some false sense of moral superiority because you don't understand the humor of the day. It's a put on. It's a parody of a discussion that was beginning to take stage. And it's funny. Obviously the name SODOWOW and H.G. Morton are just made up. The woman advocate got in her shots, and it didn't bother him a bit. One needs to be observant of human behavior, not obsess on dialogue. But then this is an age when we are systematically destroying anything that resembles human behavior, including humor.

The fellow was talking about these things in a somewhat outdated way (making the roles gender specific, for instance), but nothing he said seemed very bad. Perhaps a bit misguided, but at least respecting the work required to do those things well. Then he started talking about his little society and became absolutely repulsive in fewer words than most people could manage if they tried.

And Jesus wisely predicted that his ministry would divide "father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." Mr. Morton played a pretty good act. As soon as the questions started he looked to the woman there and took answers from her. And he gladly took a kiss from her. I think the show wanted to get people thinking. It would have been great to put the detective woman with Morton. However, she and the tall cowboy were a good match. So much do I wonder if they went on a date they had such a good time. Morton had some great HR ideas too. Groucho was ahead of his time.

She promptly slapped my face and covered my mouth. Took me decades to figure that one out! lol Anyway, The part you're right about is that no one talked about such things back then, kinda like Billy Clinton's, 'Don't ask don't tell' policy. There was a series of science fiction books dating from 1972 by John Norman called the "Gor books" about adventures related to the Planet Gor: some were totally hilarious: I recommend #12 Beasts of Gor.
An absurdist reaction to feminism, the books facetiously argued that women enjoyed rape & would kiss the chains that enslaved them, as well as the whips that chastised them.
Many women took these tomes dead seriously & caused much uproar, keeping them from being reprinted for some time. While far from great literary works, they are, for sure, not PC!

Serena Canciello I didn't get it either. Sounded like "Steward" or "Stewed" to me..

that's what I thought it sounded like too, lol. I guess I'm going to take that as he thought the guy was stupid.

Serena Canciello Yes, and since he couldn't say it directly, it came out as "stewed"...! ;)

He asks him "Are you stewed?" It's an old expression, meaning "Are you drunk out of your mind?"

Devin Lawrence Thank you very much for clearing this up! :) I was thinking it could have been something like that, but since English is not my first language, I didn't dare try to explain it that way! ;)

This Morton guy wants to get women out of politics by taking away their right to vote. And wants to make it harder for women to get into college so women will be less intelligent than men. Is this guy for real? This guy is spouting this crap in the 1950's! This sounds like something from the 1800's. I just wonder what this guy's opinion of black people was? He sounds like he could be the President of the Human Betterment Association. The guy is interesting though. I would like to use a time machine to bring him to today and put him in a museum and display him as a curiosity. Let people know that dangerous stupid kooks like this existed in the past and let it be a warning that nuts like this can exist now.

Idiot! Btw, there's a girl now, her name's Pearl (recently on Piers Morgan show) who ACTUALLY believes in what Morton said. Morton was putting on a parody but I guess that flew over your head.
