    Groucho was well-versed in sports and politics and Hollywood and the movies he was able to relate to people on many levels. He knew a lot about television in its infancy in those days. If I had been older I probably could have learned more about life from watching Groucho in those days but I was probably about 5 in 1954 and I'm not sure we even had a television by that time. When we did get a television there was only one channel to watch and it seems there was always something good on. On Saturday night there was Death Valley days with Ronald Reagan and also Gunsmoke I think. It was a good memory that we watch TV together on Saturday nights.

    It s bittersweet that Groucho, and especially the network, birthed the cue card. Execs were concerned, "What if he doesn't think of a great quip when he should?" [What? *Groucho*?!!?] So production staff, of course, interviewed contestants at length [maintaining that Groucho had never met or spoke to them before] and from their responses quips were written on large cards Groucho could use if needed. I have never *heard* of Groucho being at a loss; there are moments through the series where you can see his eyes gaze over to a card - I *honestly* believe he was merely humoring the producers by utilizing their gags when he felt they worked after all OR was checking to see if the scripted quip was better (or cleaner) than his first thought. (I've NEVER heard of Groucho being at a loss!)

    14:00 Patricia Cutts, born 1926, died 1974, British, acted in movies/tv in the early 50s and came to hollywood . One notable film she made in 1950 in the UK was Your Witness , a falsely convicted crime and courtroom drama, excellent movie also starring american Robert Montgomery 1950 . She was tall, very pretty she was married three times . In 1974 she was back in England and did two episodes on Coronation Street(longest running soap opera in tv history from 1960 till this day) . In here last two acting appearances ever, on Coronation Street, She looked aged prematurely . She had the part indefinitely but at age 49 she committed suicide. very sad. she deserves to be in a better place now .

    First off: I was surprised/impressed/curious about the sponsor DeSoto's "push button" gear shifting! Why did the concept fade? I expect a few reasons, not least is the claim it puts the shifting "out of reach of children"...but a squirming lunge and poke from a kidlet can *sure* change the driving experience. Still, kudos to DeSoto for the effort and innovative thinking.

    • @OldRustySteele
      @OldRustySteele Рік тому +1

      Push button automatic transmissions were a signature feature of Chrysler Corporation products from the mid-50’s into the early 60’s. Neither GM nor Ford nor American Motors adopted them (except for Ford’s short-lived Edsel line).
      My brother had a 1960 Plymouth Valiant which had a push button automatic, and the Valiant was their smallest, cheapest car. So Chrysler had the push button tranny from the most expensive Imperial to the least expensive Valiant.
      I don’t really know why the concept faded in the 60’s, but it’s making a comeback now! Some Honda products have them and some Lincoln’s have them too. They’re currently doing it to give you more space on the console between the front seats. (More room for huge cup holders and phone chargers and other crap like that.). Personally, I prefer the gearshift handle. You don’t have to look down at it to select the correct gear.

      I've learned about Mount Kilimanjaro from being well-read and having a decent knowledge of world geography. However, I *remember* Kilimanjaro because of the Toto song "Africa." Knowledge is different from instant recall, which is based on association. When Groucho read the question, my brain went from 'mountain' and 'Africa,' to "Africa" (the song), to 'Kilimanjaro' (in the lyrics).
      Without common associations, the brain struggles to remember things under pressure, even if you otherwise know them.

    Push button driving WAS dangerous- hence why we don't see it today. Google "The Edsel" to see why.
    Ironically, the closest thing that exists today is the push button ignition in today's hybrid cars.

      Goucho was never a communist. He was never proven to be one , despite extensive FBI investigations and finding only "whimsical" evidence. Ironically the FBI of the day behaved liked the Communist Stasi of East Germany , spying on its people and encouraging people , even children, to report behavior that did not support the regime. To quote Groucho "I've been a liberal Democrat all my life", and "I frankly find Democrats a better, more sympathetic crowd.... I'll continue to believe that Democrats have a greater regard for the common man than Republicans do".

Kevin McCarthy and Pence are two Trump sycophants. Gee, suddenly Trump world is full of McCarthys.
