"Best version of me" best advice. The way most people on social media look is really not the way they actually look. It's good lighting and photo editing.
OMG... Like I keep explaining to my friends you don't look the same the day after show day you don't look the same the day before show day that's why you go Thru peak week. Lol.
Beautiful answer. Based on the BMI recommendation I'm suppose to be 145 at 5'8. At 50 I will look hard and much older. I workout everyday and love my current weight which is 160. I love the way I look. My body is extremely toned and enjoy how I look in my clothes. My daughters are in their 20's and I tell them use the BMI index as a guide but not as law.
I'm 57 and I'm workout for over 40 years. ( Now gyms is finally open in UK ). This year I have started with weight 85 kg ( 177cm height ) and 20% body fat. My goal is to get 78 kg and 10% body fat. Even if I'm not achieve this goal, I'll be the best version of myself EVER. AMEN!!!
I was doing crossfit up to a couple of years ago, after about 18 months of pretty intensive training, I felt amazingly fit. I was 58 at the time, 72 " in height and i'd gone from 185# to 172#, my flabby chest developed into proper pecs, my waist dropped from 35 to 32" and I had pretty good stomach muscles. However, if I was out, sometimes people i know would say " You look too thin, don't lose any more weight as it doesn't suit you", whereas, at the gym, I would often change my sweaty tee shirt after a session and people, often a lot younger would say "wow you look really ripped", or "you look amazing " two extremes, that left me feeling very unsure about myself.Anyway, I had a skiing accident and after a lot of thinking during the healing process, I never went back, although I still do a little cycling and walking.
Everyone training needs to watch this. I've been an athlete and trainer for 30 years and have always hated that BMI B.S and it (still) being brought up is a constant source of annoyance. While I have always emphasised to people (and myself) to be the best version of you and compete with yourself not others, this height divided by 2 is the most logical way to asses and be realistic for anyone wanting a 'measurement' (and easy to understand) I have come across, thank you Paul 🙏
You're absolutely right, all that matters is what feels right for you, that doesn't mean you can be overweight and lie to yourself and say to yourself and you look healthy
You are 100% right. I lost almost 60 lbs and I am not happy. Happiness takes inner and outer work. I really appreciate all the words you said in this video - you are amazing.
I'm glad someone has some sense when it comes to that BMI calculator. I've lost 90lbs so far. At 5'1 I would be happy to be at 130-135. But, according to the outdated BMI chart that would be considered overweight. I believe It's more about eating the foods to get the nutrients your body needs. Also, getting some type of exercise on a regular basis. Not a number on the scale. Thanks Paul. New subscriber
Wow !!! What a great vlog Paul. It certainly hit home with me. We have some parallels here. I am 50 years old and 6ft 3in. During my lifetime I was doing some power lifting, bodybuilding, running and OCR . I peaked at 272lbs in my early 30's and was down to 209 before my first marathon at 40. Throughout this time, there were very few occasions where I truly felt like I looked good. Currently I am 222lbs and feel great.. I am in the process of learning out with a goal of 215- 218 lbs and 10% body fat. This video was so refreshing. I don't care what people think anymore. I just look at all the other dads at my daughter's school and sporting events and I know I'm in the minority and it feels good. I've been taking photos of myself for about 10 years and it truly is the key indicator of progress made As always, great stuff. Thanks
Two days out from my first show (unfortunately cancelled but doing a mock peak week) and I have been having serious self doubt. As a 6’0 young woman, it’s hard to see shorter and leaner competitors because I feel I can’t relate to them or ever get on their level. This video I stumbled on and it changed my entire perception of finishing this prep and getting the best body I’ve ever had in my life. This is a journey for ME- so THANK YOU for this and your knowledge. This video changed so much for me and my mental process on my progress.
I appreciate your hindsight perspective. Having a weekly check in with a coach gives my confidence in the direction. Photo comparisons help keep me motivated and on track.
Truthful and motivating. Strive to be the best version of myself and measuring against my accomplishments from yesterday. Diet, training, and mindset - we have the ability to dial it in. You and a handful of youtubing and instagramming motivators have helped unlock and unleash the best version of this 51 year old athlete. At 5'5" my waist size has been 32-34" since 1986. Holding steady at 30", last month I bought my first ever pair of shorts - sized Small. Thank you for your truth and guidance. And my abs thank you for letting them come outside!
For me it’s 165. As a track athlete I prefer when training and running I prefer to be lighter around 160. But when I’m that light My workouts in the eight room struggle. But when I’m heavier around 170 I feel slower on the track. So 165 is my happy spot
Finally a guy who teaches common sense. I’ve been a fitness instructor for 40 years. I watch these videos to see if they speak the truth. This guy does. Great video.
Great advice man! I was born premature with a really low birth weight (literally just slightly over a pound). At the height of 5’6 I’ve weighed 112 for the longest time. (Looked very sick. Sunken cheeks, thin as a rail, damn near skin and bones) I’ve managed to finally put on some weight at the age of 26. Went from 112-129. I put on some decent muscle and got a bit of a belly for the first time in my life. I still look thin, but at least I feel healthy and waayy better about myself.
Thanks for the amazing advice coach! I've been on a diet cutting since July and I went from 240-223. As a 6ft guy I wanna say rn I'm between 20-22% body fat, but my goal is to get to 190 and get to 13% body fat
@@trasex8572 I barely stared going to the gym already three months in but I’m trying to loose fat and gain muscle You know what I should be eating like for breakfast and lunch and I’m between cause right now in the morning I stared eating only oatmeal and than in the afternoon broccoli and chicken and than after a yogurt and an apple at night you think that’s good or what should I change
A good and easy guide is something Steve Reeves come up with. 200 pounds for a six foot tall man, add or subtract ten pounds for every inch above or below.
Steve Reeves also had another piece of measurement advice that was pretty clever. He believed the neck, upper arm and calf should all be the same. I believe his were all 18 inches.
I was fat all my life. Over the past 10 months (IF, low carb, steady state cardio & kettlebells) I got healthy and as a result I dropped 50lb. I’m 5’8”, 145lb with a 40” chest, 30” waist and abs for the first time in my life. I look like a frikin Marvel superhero with my shirt off but as you note, I still focus on the little pad of lingering fat, the skin that hasn’t tightened up yet, stress over whether I’m too light. I don’t tell people what I weigh or take my shirt off in public because regardless how good I look and feel, I get ignorant comments, “are you sick?” , “don’t lose any more weight”, “surely you miss the French fries”. I’ve followed the best modern science, the best practices of a variety of well regarded sources, yourself included, my health is my first priority, the aesthetics came as a derived benefit but you’re right there is so much pressure from other people to fit their expectations of normal. I’m the healthiest, fittest, happiest I’ve ever been in my life, their numbers be damned. Thanks for being such a sound mental coach.
Thanks for your genuine honesty, I’m 6FT 245lbs, I’ve looked at the scale and have been really frustrated, especially with the work I put in, but genetically I failed to recognize my father being a Grizzly bear lol, I come from big genetics. I feel healthy, my agility is good, but like you mentioned I failed to recognize the things my body can do, and got caught up on the things it can’t do. Deep message, thank you Sir. 🙏
I am about 6'6" I went for a physical in 2017 weighing around 250lbs. A subsitute doctor suggested that I should get around 200 lbs which I probably had not weighed in over 25-30 years. I am sixty year old now and was around 56 then. For my first forty years I basically had a basketball players physique tall and thin, But I was quite fit being able to do physical work or play all day once my body adjusted to it depending on the job or season . Even at 250 lbs I did not look that heavy. So I decided to take the doctors advice and start to lose weight maintaining between 215-225 lbs now at 60 in 2020. I just need to develop my muscles with weight bearing exercises maintaining 210-215lbs.
Paul, thank U 4 Ur msg concerning "ideal wt!" U hav redirected my focus 2 what I had been advocating for quite sometime. U hav reminded what is truly valid...."What matters 2 me!" I'm 58, and have recently lost 85 lbs. I look and feel amazing, for me. When at a healthy weight I have a slender build, I'm now happy with that. As a young adult I wasn't happy with that. Now I'm thrilled with that! Great video everything you said I agree with. Great video!
"what is the best version of me" , great comment! I just want to add a few words like, what is the best version of me, physically, intellectually, and spirituality.
Im an old man 69. I lost 30 lbs this year down to 179 69 inches tall 36 waist. My doctor said 170 is my perfect weight. My wife says i look too skinny. Im eating a high fat low carb diet and my aches and pains have vanished. Going to stop at 170 and work out more.
Great video! Thank you! I am 5 10 , 192 and hate it. I feel the best when I'm 170 ish with a 33 inch waist. The most Ive weighed was 206 and I felt obese. Some people (including family) tell me I should not be that light and I'm sick of it. I'm on my way back to that 170 range because it fits me. I can wear tight shirts at the gym or be at the pool and I feel great and healthy. Thank you again for the video!
Nice bro I was at 214 in the beggining of the year at 5'10.5" Im close to my goal which is 170 as well, got 10 more to go unless the abs arent showing 😭
Same 5’10 here. I just feel a lot better when I’m maintaining 175-180lbs. I’m closing in on my 1st year of getting back in shape on Aug 22nd. Can’t wait to see how far I’ve come since Aug 2022.
Here are the weight divisions kilograms and pounds lowest to highest. 128 lbs (58kg) and below very light. 128 lbs-160 lbs (58kg-72kg) light weight. 161 lbs-182 lbs (73kg-82kg) medium weight. 183 lbs-204 lbs (83kg-92kg) light heavyweight. 205 lbs-233 lbs (93kg-105kg) heavyweight. 234 lbs-308 lbs (106kg-139kg) and over super heavyweight. Around 235 lbs (106kg) is when you can be considered very heavy I think.
Hell yah. Excellent message here towards the end. I feel everyone, young n old, beginner to novice, should listen in and truly register what is being said. Best to come to terms in accepting one's current profile, perfecting it as best as they can . in stead of chasing a certain 'shape/figure' that is not attainable. As you said, in my younger years i'd have shined off that cheesy message. Now that i'm older and wiser, I can appreciate and totally support the 'Be the best version of me'. Thanks, paul!
I needed this I want something that’s not sustainable just because society has made it seem that way but in the end it won’t matter because I would be unhappy and in the end nothing in life matters just be the best version of yourself be happy and healthy and do what’s best for you and enjoy the process and don’t overthink the small things in life because it’s short but not short enough to overthink things that can be negligible in the long run 👌
One of the best videos ever about one's health. In a society of shallow, judgment people, and a scandalous healthcare system that tries to keep you on the system for profit, this video hits so many truths. You know if you're healthy. Just remember if you're living a lie about your healthy lifestyle, you're probably not healthy ... Personal Responsibility! Good luck with your health. Thank you for this awesome video.
Wow this is so very true! I remembered in HS the body shamming because I was more muscular than my team mates and I developed early as well. That affeacted me all the way into the military where I was in even better shape and I would doubt, bitch and complain because I felt bigger. Now in my 40s I working to get back and be better but it does take hard work and a mindset of appreciation. Great video!
I've been beating myself up based on bmi but the half of height formula - I've already met that and I do look good already. Thanks so much. I'm marathoning your videos and subscribed.
I've been eating carnivore for my health for over 2 years and work out at a crossfit gym. I had an ego boost earlier this week because younger men and women were looking at me. I wore a tight fitting jacket and now weigh about 158-160 and 5' 8''. I'm 68.
You all prolly dont care at all but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot the account password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Amir Drake Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
I don't care what people comments. I am happy with how i look, except that scale I jump on every morning scared me. No matter what I eat and how much I shuffle into my body doesn't help to gain an oz. It's stable but BMI show 18, mildly thin. Why can I not gain any weight? Concern health problem more than weight. Or just maybe that my body type? The BMI and the scale is my obsession. I am feeling a bit better after watching your video. Thanks for the comfort❣️ Subscribed
Its a great information after watching this i am relaxed now I don't need to worry much about weight because its all about you just forget about the weight but the concept of waist & height is good !! Thanks for making this video
Man, that is the most common sense approach to weight that I've heard ever. According to some "tables," I should weigh 130-140...I'm 5'9" and weigh 222 lbs. My BMI is supposedly 31...I am overweight, I feel it and my stomach says so. I don't have a "pot belly," but it ain't flat either. I'd love to get to 180 lbs with a 32"-33" waste, but at 63, I'm struggling to do burn off this fat. I lift weights 5 days per week, and do cardio 4 days. Now, the cardio thing...I've read and seen videos that say at my age I should be doing HIIT cardio, and others say steady state for 30-60 minutes is what I should be doing; one video I watched with two gentlemen discussing cardio concluded that the HIIT is the weight lifting and the steady state is just fine. I AM SO CONFUSED!! I JUST WANT TO BURN OFF THIS FAT!! I'm really attempting to watch carefully my macros...that's another thing, the variations of how many carbs, proteins, and fats is mind boggling: 40/40/20...50/30/20...25/45/30...and so on; eat healthy fats to help increase my testosterone, HIIT for a test booster, lift heavy for a test booster...HELP!
Nope, not all! I get many compliments by random strangers about my physique quite often. If I looked to thin no random people would ever approach me in a store or on a beach or at the gym to compliment me.
@@brookesmith1550 nothing wrong with compliments this just shows what people like very skinny people. At your height and weight you are definitely thin, guaranteed protruding bones which can lead others to view as anorexic.
I know that it should be really simple to take a waist measurement. But it’s also really easy to fool yourself-suck in, push out, bring the tape higher, lower, in the morning, in the evening, etc. Could you explain the best time and way to measure with a demonstration?
Eat a hearty meal to full, and measure your waist about 30 minutes to an hour later, where your stomach still bulging, that would be the most accurate waistline I consider. The fact whether you can digest the food quick or not was based on the metabolism you have, so the more nutrients you need based on the muscle you have to maintain, the faster the digestion will be, so the waistline is more likely to be smaller, and so is true vice versa. You can't cheat your measurements when you have your full meal and your stomach bulging.
Great stuff. We are our worst critic . Loving yourself and accepting who you are will help with any doubts. As well as insecurities . I'm around your same age too. I look at my fitness journey day-by-day . Its like walking up a hill with no end in sight . Just walking taking my time and enjoying the moment . Stay healthy my friends .
One of those major aspects that way too many people overlook is the difference in each individuals physiology is the unique physiology of each individual. Just because one person is say around my height 5'11, and they are 170Ib ,but I'm just over 200Ibs, and they might think I'm a tad too heavy even though I legitimately have less than 9% body fat, trust me you never go off of what someone else thinks or says. He is definitely 100% correct, never pay attention to other's opinions, for they are just opinions not facts, you know your body better than anyone, especially if you are like me and have been excersizing and weight lifting for over 20 years . And yes he is also correct when he said that unless you are apart of the "Average ", majority of society that isn't particularly overly physically active AKA not a avid longtime athlete, weight lifter and or other kind of active athlete, then the Bmi chart will be a roughly almost accurate guide but if you're a active athlete or even very physically active individual like myself who is also a current serving soldier, that stays very fit, then that "BMI" chart is going to be very inaccurate. But all specifics aside just remember you know how your body works better than anyone, don't let naysayers and doubters hinder who you know you are.
I believe that if you are comfortable with the way you look, it does not matter what people think. People do lots of crazy unbelievable things to make them try to look what they think they should look. You have choices and should not regret the choices you make. Love youself and believe in yourself. Live your own life dont try to live in anyone elses shadow. Much love and respect to all of you. Great content as usual Paul.
I'm a 59 year old man who is 5 foot 5 inches. I used to be taller but time and tide take their toll on everyone. I used to be 261 pounds (felt like crap)with 34% body fat. I'm now 154 pounds with 16% body fat. I feel great. I watch what I eat and walk 6 to 8 miles per day. Health issues prevent me from doing more. So I don't focus on what I can't do but rather on what I can do. The BMI says 25.0 which is on the lower level of overweight. I think the BMI scale is soooooooooo outdated. One size does not fit all.
Your message can be applied to everything in life, for most of us as we grow old we stop caring what others think and then regret that why didn't we do that sooner.
At those figures, I am grotesquely, overweight, difficult, but not impossible, not only can I do it, I am going to do it, thanks for the encouragement, this page is amazing, you guys are awesome, thanks again
God bless you I see the emotions in your speech and in your face I used to weigh 319 lb I now weigh 146 too many doctors are saying I need to wait 130 but my gastric bypass doctor told me I needed to wait 140 I am short and I still feel like I weigh 319 I had a panniculectomy March 2nd 2022 to get rid of my extra skin but yet I still feel huge they took out 8 lb of skin I couldn't afford the whole surgery but got what I got and I am so amazed and so happy that I look a lot better I went from a size 50 dress to 10/12 I like loose clothes the problem with me is I'm short so I look dumpy if I was tall which I'm not I would probably be okay my surgeon said I would never be skinny I told him I don't want to be skinny I want to be healthy so they said for me to be 140 lb but being 4ft 11inch really sucks I tried the measurement and it says I am medium bone & curvy thanks to my doctor...thank you for your video take care God bless you be safe
I’m the same, lifter and cardio (mainly kickboxing) lover. Mostly lifting these days and I still have a hard time putting on mass. Acceptance and functional fitness is my thought.
Very wise words. I keep getting told by fat people I am too thin. My bmi is 19.4 and I'm aiming for a bruce lee type of physique. I have abs, and just have a little more shredding to do before I'm done with fat loss. People think I don't eat even though I eat more than I used to when I was 5 stones heavier...high volume low calorie. It's not even difficult to lose fat...protein ice cream, white egg omelettes, roast vegetables....I go to bed with a food baby every night, but yes, fat people with their chubby cheeks tell me I'm too thin despite being in the healthy range, and them being in the obese or higher range....mainly because people look better with some fat on their face. Unfortunately I can't have abs and chubby cheeks. That would be great but it doesn't work that way. I love your wise words. "SCREW THEM". They couldn't even keep up with the amount of food I eat every day but they think they know more than someone who can run a sub 1 hour 30 half marathon. Does anyone else get this? I'm too polite to tell them to get back to me once they are out of the obese range, but I'm sooooo tempted.
OMG I love ❤️ this video Paul!! I’m very thin and get plenty of people saying at times I need to gain weight however I feel good 😌 & I’m happy 😊 I’m not trying to lose any weight, I eat healthy quality foods and much more much more than those telling me to gain. All about how I FEEL about myself not them~confidence it the priority not others opinions!
It's feeling too skinny but people say I look great for me . I do and I have a healthy body image but at 31 with 3 kids 6, 2, and 1 yrs old, I am 125lbs, 5'4 in. I like myself at a good 135lbs. Haven't been able hold it; my doctors say I am overall heathly and blood work is good as well. Eating healthy fats, proteins, mild strengthing body wrok..I see a lil something. This video helped alot as well. Thank you.
Good advice. I started working out at 70, I am now 76. I look at my muscles, how much fat on my abdomen, can I see my Acromiam under my T-shirt. I am a endomorph, I will never get thick arms or legs but I can very very fit. Good talk.
Good Info Paul. I also prefer to use waist/height ratio, and most top Marathon runners are close to 40% It is hard to be lean over 45%. So at 6'3" that would put your waist at 33.75. Scales are not that important, but those who remain lean do weight in more often.
I had the experience until now, that with 70 kilos had feel good, healthy, had good power for my beloved hobby(cycling, climbing hills, bikepacking-camping), but was a bit in the heavy side of my height, now I discover Keto and I'm 64 kilos, leaner and a lot of energy and power and more healthy than ever at 49 years old, I would have love people tell me you are too heavy or too thin...they just ignore the fact, I'm now almost 2 sizes smaller but powerful than ever and nobody says something...strange...but Ok, I know it and I now am more healthy than before, and if I don't feel good leaner, I will go back to my old size, but feel much better. So guys don't let other people's opinions or lack of opinion get you down, hear your body and how you feel! Thanks for this great video, new subscriber.

Thank you. This was so relatable, and appreciate the body positive message.
That's my goal too, I'm also 6ft tall, rightnow I weigh 210, I started the year at 230
Progress updates ???

A good and easy guide is something Steve Reeves come up with. 200 pounds for a six foot tall man, add or subtract ten pounds for every inch above or below.
Cool. That means at 6'2 218 I'm under. Makes much more sense than that age old BMI index chart.
You are welcome!

I'm 58, and have recently lost 85 lbs. I look and feel amazing, for me. When at a healthy weight I have a slender build, I'm now happy with that. As a young adult I wasn't happy with that. Now I'm thrilled with that! Great video everything you said I agree with. Great video!
The BMI is a good guideline for people starting out (not elite athletes) but I agree the BMI is antiquated.
Well said
"what is the best version of me" ,
great comment! I just want to add a few words like, what is the best version of me, physically, intellectually, and spirituality.
“Journey is between your ears” Amen

Wow this is so very true! I remembered in HS the body shamming because I was more muscular than my team mates and I developed early as well.
Yessss 🙌🏼 I want to be the best version of myself and screw what someone else thinks! 💪🏼👊🏼

So pretty much anorexic looking?
Nope, not all! I get many compliments by random strangers about my physique quite often. If I looked to thin no random people would ever approach me in a store or on a beach or at the gym to compliment me.
@@brookesmith1550 nothing wrong with compliments this just shows what people like very skinny people. At your height and weight you are definitely thin, guaranteed protruding bones which can lead others to view as anorexic.
You have a great attitude and mindset. Carry on brother. Respect !

Thank you Paul! Sometimes we just need to hear these things from another person. If we are happy, screw them. Thank you for reinforcing that!
Also depends on your basic body type ie endomorph, mesomorph or ectomorph and their ratios.
wow i am enlightened. thats an amazing point of view. thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great stuff. We are our worst critic . Loving yourself and accepting who you are will help with any doubts. As well as insecurities . I'm around your same age too.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a height problem. Seriously, thanks for the vlog, really good, useful information and realistic. 👍
I am going to steal this!
3:20 I believe that should be WAIST / HIPS (so it should read 35/45 = 0.77)
Awesome information. Thanks from Hawaii 🤙🏼

Great Advice Coach P!👊🏾💯💯💯
They're jealous.
You’re pretty awesome! Love your attitude and the message you convey.
I appreciate that!

Thank you.
So on point!!! Love it!!!
Good advice. I started working out at 70, I am now 76. I look at my muscles, how much fat on my abdomen, can I see my Acromiam under my T-shirt. I am a endomorph, I will never get thick arms or legs but I can very very fit. Good talk.
Ectomorph of course.
Good Info Paul. I also prefer to use waist/height ratio, and most top Marathon runners are close to 40%
It is hard to be lean over 45%.
