      Or rent/property values skyrocketing because of all the people buying investment properties to either turn them into Airbnbs or price the rent so high that it eclipses the mortgage, so that the renters are the ones paying off the property while the landlords collect the difference and minimally handle incedentals. That's why rent is now 30% of most people's paycheck on average. You're not paying rent. You're paying off someone else's mortgage and sponsoring their lifestyle. Good luck scraping up a down payment for a place of your own while the dollar gets weaker, you're not getting paid more, and the cost of everything else is rising.

    • @Demented_Zeal
      @Demented_Zeal 5 місяців тому +1

      @PANICBLADE I gotta push back on this a bit I’m a small time landlord, investment property always needs to pay you back. That’s the whole point of investing. It’s true a number of landlords take their profit margins too far we definitely agree there but unless you want to be forced to evict every tenant you have bc your being foreclosed on the property literally NEEDS to at least pay for ALL of the expenses it comes with meaning mortgage, utilities, maintenance, advertising, legal fees, and then you take your profit on top of that. Renters pay a premium to avoid these responsibilities out of pocket that’s why renting exists, for those that want a place to live with less responsibility or downside if you will and that’s perfectly fine. Now if we are talking about large whale investors buying up all the RESIDENTIAL properties like houses and not multiplexes or apartment and commercial buildings I think we would be in agreement that should be illegal bc it’s certainly immoral. That alone drives market prices through the roof bc these hundred billion dollar entities can easily pay 10-30k more for a house and see profit in the long term. Which forces people like you and even me to come out of pocket more. They basically buy out their competition by raising the bar too high. Hope this gave a different and useful perspective for you 🙏

    my parents had a talk me and my siblings, it was so depressing because the conversation boiled down to "once you hit 18 and start working, its all downhill. you will never have fun or much time to yourself, its a constant grind and it never really stops" it was crushing. it honestly made me kind of afraid to grow up and be an adult because it sounded like hell.
    not only is it the "I suffer, now everyone should suffer" mentality, but its also this mentality of everyone telling other people "yep, it's all downhill from here and it'll never get better" to the point that they make jokes about how miserable it is. They just accept that it's "part of being an adult". kinda like a defeatist mindset.

I make 0 dollars rn, live of my savings while working all day non stop to create the business I want to create. But it doesn’t feel like work everyday, I have so much fun doing it that I feel alive again! Work feels easy and interesting everyday. I may not make as much money as I did on my 9-5 this year or maybe even next year. But I’m out, if I wanna go hit the ski slopes tomorrow I can, no boss, no problem. • @spnked9516
      @spnked9516 6 місяців тому +30

      I think a big part of the problem is that a lot of people never really progress past a childlike mentality and fail to develop any real substantive meaning in their lives. They're essentially just living for constant consumption and pleasure in the immediate now. When you factor that in it makes a lot more sense why your standard 9-5 grind seems like the most pointless, soul crushing thing ever.
      What's more, a lot of the 9-5 white collar jobs these people work are essentially clown jobs that exist only because of incompetency or inefficiency, which results in the work itself feeling valueless. So not only are people not enduring work as a means to a greater purpose (supporting a family, for example), but they also aren't achieving any satisfaction from or seeing the value in the work they're doing.

    The worst part of the blatantly stupid standard 9-5 schedule is that no one can ever give a good reason for it even existing. I have a very personal example of that to share with y'all, if you don't mind my subsequent rambling.
    I used to work customer service representing a large corporation, but working under a smaller, dedicated Call Center company. So while I represented Big Corpo, I actually worked for Smol Corpo.
    Smol Corpo treated me well. They offered a 4 day/week (10 hour shifts) schedule, entirely remote. But they were based in another province (equivalent of a state in the US, I'm Canadian), and Big Corpo was based 20 minutes away from my place, so it only made sense for me if I wanted to move up the Corpo ladder eventually, that I would actually start working for Big Corpo instead, since they offered the same exact position, and were more than happy to bring me in (I'm a good employee).
    Here comes the big BUT, however. They ONLY offered a 5 day a week (8 hour shifts) schedule, entirely in person. And when I asked to work ny prior 4 day/week, 10h shift schedule, I was completely denied, and was never even given a reason other than "Eh, it's just the way things are. We can only offer you that option." No reason, just "fuck you", basically, even though I did the EXACT. SAME. JOB. with the previous company, on a fully remote 10h 4-day/week schedule. They wouldn't even accomodate me for a few days at home, even though we worked on LAPTOPS, and the 10 hour shift schedule fit perfectly in our opening hours for the Call Center.
    So I left! And I now work a 4 day/week, 10h shifts schedule, fully remote, at another company, who treats me and my coworkers with more respect.
    This whole BS is honestly just stupid people following other stupid people because the stupid people before them fabricated a stupid, outdated system that completely sucks the life out of you.

      It makes me think of the kind of character in a tv show or movie that feels 100% confident in bullshitting, like a Saul Goodman type-cause they’ve realized the people they’re interacting with don’t even know what they’re talking about themselves, and will sabotage your entire story if you let them take control. Thank you for this fair take, Charlie. I feel like most people with untraditional jobs or who simply get to be home and be their own boss wouldn’t understand. My 9-5 routine is something that has been really getting me down lately. I have been working a 9-5 since 2021 and have felt completely disconnected from the rest of the world. You have to wake up at a time you dont want to wake up, drive to a place you dont want to drive to, wear clothes you dont want to wear, and spend 9-10 hours with people you dont want to spend any time with to begin with. by the time i get home, make dinner, clean the dishes, work out, and finally shower and lay on the couch its 9:30-10pm. I have no time for the things i love like video games, movies, or comic books. Its soul crushing. And heres the BIG plot twist. This is coming from somebody who LOVES their job and only has a 20 minute commute! I have NO idea how my friends who commute to the city or have all commission jobs where you dont even know if you’ll get paid that week do it. So this girl i can relate to, and I hope she finds a way to better handle this career path or have the opportunity to change it because its rough out here.

      Yup. So true. Even though it is notably harder since the pandemic, the brutality of it all has been on the increase since around the late 50s to early 60s (A glorious era where even CEOs had caps)… But a massive blow was when “From Wikipedia: President Nixon canceled the 1944 Bretton Woods system that tied the US dollar to gold. So, the gold prices were fixed and the inflation rate was highly moderate. In 1971 President Nixon decided to abandon the gold standard.” Not all that long after then you have had the introduction of invisible money/money from nothing (Computer code), so as a result we are completely screwed… The overall debt for the world is roughly 12 times higher than the amount of physical money that is currently available!! We are now in an era where CEOs can easily make well over a thousand times as much as the average worker!! An era where financial corruption is truly rampant…

      As a fellow crew chief, I completely understand. I worked on F-15s on the flight line and in phase for years until an injury I suffered during a launch finally progressed to the point where I realized I couldn't reenlist. Eventually, I received word from the VA about the severity of my back injury. When I was in, I was so afraid it might look like I was trying to get out of work that I never really got my back checked out as I should have, regardless of how much it started to hurt. It turns out I was born with an extra disc in my back that, according to the VA doctor, was probably crushed like an eggshell. I continued working on jets for years after because I simply thought everyone's back was supposed to hurt after working on jets for a while.
      The "good work ethic" that I was praised for by my supervisors means nothing now because it damaged my body so badly that I can't work as a mechanic anymore. I'm glad I'm out, and I'll never pretend that working doesn't suck, whether it's a 16-hour shift on Christmas or an 8-hour shift on a Tuesday. sorry if this was a bit long i haven't seen another maintainer in a bit.

      @@wowwowwow7139Always great to hear from a fellow crew chief! I’m sorry to hear about your back, and you’re right that was one of the biggest fears while in was talking about any pain or mental issues so you didn’t look “lazy” or “weak”. I know how slow the VA can be on almost anything, but I really hope they get you taken care of brother!
      It’s always crazy to hear how that “good work ethic” from military cause so many of us to push ourselves and break our bodies putting service before self, but when we get out we’re all but forgotten. Life is short and I know too many that can’t live it to the fullest anymore because of some sort of service disabilities caused from pushing themselves too hard.
      And it may be a hot take, but I don’t believe we’ve been in any kind of war or conflict fora long time that should be having our service members pushing themselves to the breaking point like that.
      But much love and respect brother and I hope you’re able to heal up and are doing well in all other aspects of life!

    I think we can all agree that the major problem with this is not _just_ that you have so little time for yourself, is that most people with a 9 to 5 (or basically 40+ hrs a week) job just aren't earning enough to take a good vacation or just quit and not have to worry about basic necessities. Its even worse because it used to be a rumor and secret how wage stagnation was on purpose but now they even say it live on podcasts, talks and courses, they legitimately strive to keep people barely capable of paying bills so that they can't quit for fear of homelessness and poverty.

    This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think another largely undiscussed reason why we hate 9-5 jobs so much is that our cities are so car-dependant that they compound the problems. Lots of people can spend more than an hour or an hour and a half driving to work, which is unpaid and eats directly into free time that otherwise might have made people happier. Not to mention, driving in traffic is stressful. We need more walkable cities and more train lines running in the United States. When I worked in D.C. and had to ride the MARC commuter rail down there, I had a great time just relaxing on the train and walking in the city.

Older generations almost unanimously reject anything less than a 40 hour work week even when all evidence points towards a 32 hour work week being just as, if not more productive than 40 hours. • @flavoryf566
      @flavoryf566 10 місяців тому +1

      full time second shift sucks. I'm of the thought that you only take that position under these circumstances
      1. 1st / 3rd shift spots are taken
      2. You're working with friends/family during that time at that place of work
      3. You're single & want the shift premium to get a little more out of it.
      4. You also dgaf about when you work / are insane...
      I've worked full time second for 2 years due to #1 before. Miserable experience half the reason is also because I am a night owl / half my friends are across the world so difficult to interact with. Wake up at 8-9am, shower/eat an hour within waking, do stuff till about 2pm but not the hours I like doing things unless it was a day off... then work 3pm - 11pm / 1am, unwind from work till 2am and then sleep. Freetime being restricted to just a certain few hours before work really sucked. Especially Dr appointments since it is hard to get those times where I lived at the time. Always cut it close to work unfortunately.
      Graveyard shift now of 11pm - 7am or sometimes 9pm-7am (if doing a 4 day work week) much happier for 6 years on this. 10 min commute as well is a really nice thing. (VERY lucky on this front, others I know can have 30-90 min commutes, insane) I either stay up till noon doing whatever, get the earliest appointments luckily too or just show up to stores as they open which is nice. Sleep from 12pm - 6 or 7pm, things are quieter...can still hit up some errand running before work.
      Or I can sleep right away from 7:15 am till 2pm roughly. Then that's 3pm - 10:15pm (I wake up slow always takes an hour to be fully awake) of free time some days to visit friends/family do favors for 'em ie babysit their kid or pets for a bit and run all my errands, and what not. Far more flexible, girlfriend happier too for increased time spent together. Granted some people did not get the concept of when I was sleeping for a while lol. 45 mins to be ready before work in case of car issues every day, always played it safe. Need time to diagnosis it and fix it myself or call for an emergency ride.
      Granted you can say maybe I improved time management skills, nah hasn't changed that much they are just decent maybe at best. Again a nightowl is all it is. Day shifts aren't for everyone, and neither are night or graveyard shifts. But some people end up in those hours where it just doesn't work out for them due to positions being filled up, and sometimes those positions may only be available on that specific shift or time of day. Along with the factor of operation hours. If a company only operates 16 hours of the day, (so 5am - 9pm roughly for example) Then that ...can mess with some people but work well for others of course. But again depends if they can get slotted in for the hours they'd prefer to work while still having some semblance of a life, or just get the short end of the stick and have to be an early riser for a job, when they are a slow riser or more of an afternoon/night worker. So many factors....
      If they are just a dogshit worker or lazy/incompetent that's something else entirely of course too as a factor lol.

    Very much agree. I’m a lawyer and used to work for a Big 4 accounting firm in NYC. I lived in Brooklyn and my office was in Midtown Manhattan, so my commute was 50-55 minutes door-to-door each way. I would leave home around 7:15am and often wouldn’t get home until between 7:30-8pm. I literally had a nervous breakdown and had to take medical leave. It’s so counterproductive. The work-life balance I was forced to live to be “productive” for the firm resulted in my absence for a month.
    After 7 years working for these NYC firms that don’t give a damn about the mental health of their employees I’m just done. It’s a risk, but I’m quitting law and pursuing a career as a content creator because I simply refuse to spend the rest of my life not living.

    But the worst part is that in many professions 9 to 5 with 40 hour weeks doesn't even make sense from a productivity standpoint. Many tests of a 4 day work week or 6 hour work day with same pay often yield productivity INCREASES in the long term.

Having had all 3 of these different shifts, I can say the 9-5 is the best because you still have time to unwind each day unless you chose to work 10+ miles away from home.

But that comes at the cost of not being able to see friends or family, or do anything enjoyable for 2 weeks minimum. 1 week for regional drivers, but there's usually less money in that. On top of that, they deal with rude customers/shippers, potentially rude dispatchers, and of course, car drivers that just can't stand being behind a semi, so they cut them off.
      I guess it varies depending where you are. I live in a city with a booming semiconductor industry. And only after covid has it been really hard to afford living here. Prior to covid, one could rent a 2 bedroom apartment for 1000-$1200. Now a janky 2 bedroom apartment is 1400 minimum, 1800 if you want something "decent". And 2 bedroom houses for rent almost don't exist, the ones that do are usually $2000 minimum. i work 12 hours a day at a furniture store, with an hour of commute , 7 days a week. i leave home at 9am and reach back home at 10pm. im this close to sudoku or going full blown sociopath. it's been months since i had a meaningful conversation with a friend. only conversations i have are with customers who i'm trying to sell shit to. it's been months since i had fun. it's been months since i sat down and made music. im usually the friend everyone vents to. and im happy to help but lately, i volantarily ignore vents. because i know one more and im gonna break. this lifestyle is soul crushing. i hope she finds a job where she doesnt have to spend her whole day working.

    I have always hated how predatory the working economy actually is, and somehow the world doesnt care. There are millions of people working almost everyday to the bone, making minimum wage or slightly more, barely able to feed themself or live comfartably and that for their entire life. Only to one day be so broken down mentally and phisically from work that they cant even enjoy their rent. Its honestly disgusting. And the worst part? People dont care, i have seen so many people be broken down by this disgusting system only for them to spew the same ignorant garbage that their parents before told them "You need to work until you are old, otherwise you will never survive, and your children wont life comfartably". Everyone hates it, everyone is hurt by it, yet no one tries to change it. I always said that the current form of the working economy is simply a modern form of slavery, for everyone making a low salary.

My days off are spent developing skills and growing as a person and I'm extremely thankful for that.

    I think it’s a generational understanding problem. A lot of the older generations were born into eras with less technology, so naturally, more work. And that was normal. Now the younger generation sees that technology makes jobs easier, but the cost of living is much higher. I work a 9-5 job that I love, but I barely make enough money to provide for myself and time to socialize.
    It’d just be nice to be paid a livable wage. Especially in a corporate America where everything revolves around shareholders and helping the rich get richer lol
    It’s a tough position that I don’t know the solution for other than increasing pay without increasing the cost to live.

I feel like most wealthy people started feeling empty while driving through the city on their stupid SUVs and having no massive amounts of poor people to look down on to make them feel good about themselves, and next thing you know, every company is again asking you to leave your house, be stuck in traffic for hours, just to get inside a building and then proceed to sit on a desk and work with a computer for hours on end. @BlueOvals24 10 місяців тому +2

      @RemixedYoshi Exactly. People have it in their heads that college will open so many doors to them, and will do so right away. Sure, it does open more possibilities, but you still have to work your way up. But you have to know exactly what you want to do with that education, otherwise it can waste multiple years of your life and put you into debt equivalent to that of a nice car.

    • @traolin5877

      @@BlueOvals24precisely. College will open up more opportunities, but you need to know what you want to do, which is why it is ridiculous that 18 year olds are expected to make that decision so early and are given the ability to get eyeballs deep in debt. I always try to encourage community college first if you aren’t sure to at least knock the gen eds out and save some cash. Community colleges in my area have very generous financial aid, good education quality, and plenty of internship opportunities for experience. At best, you saved some cash, got a scholarship and transferred credits for your next school, or you ended up in a place where an associates and experience is plenty to get in the door. At worst, you explored a bit and didn’t break the bank. The only issue is that too many people still have a negative view of community college. Their loss though. Leaves more opportunities for those that do go

    I worked for a company that was hybrid and we only came in to the office once a week. The days that we were at home were awesome. Everyone got all their work done.
    This past year they made everyone come back to the office full time. I have at least 2 hours less per work day for my personal life due to commuting and having to have breakfast ready/shower before work. Obviously that’s 10 less hours a week to myself. It’s kinda crazy how different working from home felt vs how I never feel like I have enough time now. Shit sucks.
    And honestly I’ve got it wayyyyyyy easier than a lot of people. I very rarely work OT. my commute is a lot shorter than other people I work with and STILL since coming back to the office I feel like I have zero free time during the week.

    In Switzerland you start a 9 to 5 with the age of 15 as an apprentice earning cuple hundred of dollars. While going to school 1 or 2 days a week. The first year was realy hard for me adjusting to not having that much time and being exhausted from coming home late and then having to sit down and study for a couple of hours. Now i have it all figured out and have time for meeting friends and studing. You need to have good time managment to be able to live your life. That being said i do agree with Charlie and have to say that in countrys like america and switzerland work shouldnt demand that much from you. I was able to work in germany for 1 month 7 hours a day. And i have to say it was a massive diffrence, i was able to still enjoy the day and do something.
