One of the most iconic photos from Asia is a still from a video that is ironically banned in the country where it was taken, the man vs tanks at Tiananmen square
What tanks? In Tianmen Square? Are you sure that exist? Maybe that happened in the west but there’s no way it’s from Asia! I don’t know what you’re talking about!
Tank Man is the nickname of an unidentified Chinese man who stood in front of a column of tanks leaving Tiananmen Square on June 5, 1989. As the lead tank maneuvered to pass by the man, he repeatedly shifted his position in order to obstruct the tank's attempted path around him.

@Marco Arrantez hmm? What do you mean?

Bung Tomo is an Indonesian national hero from Surabaya. made a speech when the Dutch returned to Indonesia to colonize. He said
Bung Tomo :"Freedom or Death"
It became a symbol of nationalism for Indonesian youth at that time and now.
Edit: you can search for the speech on UA-cam
I read somewhere that the photo was actually staged for propaganda purpose, not taken at the moment. Very savvy.
Kalo menurutku yang membekas di otakku tu ga tau kenapa yang foto di atas hotel yamato robek bendera biru belanda. Atau gak pas soeharto tanda tanganin loi imf.

Hey J.J. you should consider doing a video on iconic national books. As an American, I think Tom Sawyer, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the Great Gatsby. I would love to know what Canadians and other people consider their country's iconic books!
What a great ideas to cover covers of iconic books. Me as a music lover would suggest an episode on iconic music album covers.
The Hockey Sweater by Roch Carrier is our national epic
Anne of Green Gables, though it may only be more relatable for Canadians living in the Maritimes rather than at a national level.
In Brazil the most iconic book probably whould be Dom Casmurro by Machado de Assis. Also i think that's a great idea for a video.
For Russia; Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky.
Can’t really say much about the book because I haven’t read it, all I know is it’s apparently a very good book and an important part of Russian literature.
If I remember correctly it’s about a poor young man who kills an old woman for her money but feels remorseful and is afraid he’s going to get caught. If you don’t think that sounds good I probably just did a bad job describing it lol

Inevitably there were several left out. Like the Napalm bombing photo in Vietnam, like the fall of the Berlin Wall, like the picture in Stalingrad, like the fall of the statue of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad, funeral of Gamal Abdel Nasser in Egypt, the Yalta summit of the four leaders for example. This does need a follow-up that could be equally interesting.

I can appreciate the cultural significance of Abbey Road, but as a Brit when I think of our iconic photos I will always think of Churchill giving V signs. My personal favourite is the 1943 photo in New York as he signals to a group of cheering sailors disembarking the Queen Mary, it really encapsulates the sort of hero figure he quickly became (and still is) and him being in America after so long of Britain having bad to no relations, really well represents what was at stake for the UK.
Exactly. As an Indian, the most iconic British photo I would think of is Churchill flashing the V sign in front of parliament. I would also think of the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana.

2:10 England won the World Cup not Britain. All the constituent countries of the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) play as individual teams in international soccer.
Except for the Olympics
David Trneček team GB for England, Scotland, Wales and those from Northern Ireland that want to compete as a British athlete. If a Northern Irish athlete wants to compete for Ireland they can.
Then in international Rugby there’s England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, which consists of Irish and Northern Irish players, regardless of whether they identify as British or Irish.

There's an interesting story related to the Apocalypse Now photo. When the photographer Niedenthal wanted to send it to the German Newsweek, he couldn't find anyone to get the photos out of the country. Desperate, he randomly gave them to a man boarding a train to Berlin and hoped for the best. In a couple of weeks he found that they were indeed published in Newsweek, unfortunately with a glaring error: the top part of the photo, displaying the name of the cinema (Kino Moskwa, "Moscow Cinema"), was cropped, significantly reducing the impact of the picture.
...EXACTLY THE SAME ERROR AS JJ MADE IN THE VIDEO!!!!
17:44 Thanks for including this! I was hoping you'd talk about it in more depth but considering exactly how many submissions you covered (and moreso how many you couldn't) I'm happy you brought it up at all. We need a followup JJ! 'Nam, China (though I guess, you prob don't have to many viewers straight from the mainland), Japan, Korea were all left out! I could say that the running naked Viet child (and the Prince Charles parody), the tiananmen square, Hirohito and MacArthur, and the charge of protesters at the Gwangju uprising are the most iconic images of those nations respectively (internationally anyway).
JJ has the best name for his fans. It’s literally Friends
There a picture from china that was somewhat iconic. I think... from around 1989. Nothing rly important, tho.
Kinda low-key.
All of the submissions were sent in by his viewers. I doubt that he has many subscribers from the PRC.

I always thought the self-immolated monk from Vietnam was an iconic photo. Rage Against the Machine used it in their self titled debut album
I think the current government there doesn’t promote that photo for a variety of reasons, namely because they like a narrative where there was no south vietnam and because they were just as bad to the Buddhist ms as Diem was
Lex Bright Raven after the French were defeated Vietnam was divided with a communist dictatorship in the north and an anti communist dictatorship in the south. The US tried to prop up the southern state, eventually signing a peace deal with north vietnam in 1972. Not long after the north Vietnamese communists abandoned the peace deal and began a new invasion of the south, which the US basically abandoned in the wake of political turmoil at home. South Vietnam surrendered in 1975.
Not my first time seeing The Royal Birch, in a server on Discord we have a very proud Norwegain fellow who will often share tidbits about his nation's history and culture. This was one of the first photos I remember him showing us and he happily told the story behind it. He is a favorite among us.

Great video! For some reason I felt your personality showed a bit more in this video in comparison to others. It seemed more wholesome.
I also like your comment how Canadians and Americans often think of multiculturalism/diversity as being "their thing" and not something found elsewhere. Canada/US have their own versions of it, but really you can go back to ancient Persia and the time of Cyrus the Great where ideas of multiculturalism were cherished and valued. Cyrus, upon conquering a nation, would invite their king to be a part of his advisory group while also letting the nation follow their own customs, laws, and even administration (as long as they paid their taxes, of course). This was highly unusual for the time since kings and their families were often murdered to prevent their later rise. In Iran today there are large monuments and buildings built by the ancient Persians that had on their walls written stories about what happen during Cyrus' reign, but it would be written over and over again in different languages from the empire! The idea was that the capital would be a place for all people of the empire. Cyrus was a visionary for his time and definitely had a kind, but firm hand when it came to ruling.
Funnily enough, the only reason the Western Wall (the wall you showed in your Israel photo) was built was because Cyrus believed so strongly in his multicultural vision, that he allowed the Jews to go back to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple (I even think he committed funds). Cyrus conquered Babylon without shedding blood simply by appealing to the Babylonians on the basis of their God. Instead of subjugating Babylon to the local deities of Persia, Cyrus said to them that he is the true patron of the Babylonian God and that by accepting his rule, they are in-fact empowering their own faith.
A bit of a ramble. But keep the good content coming!
Great idea, nicely executed. I'm fascinated by the fact that many photos featured two opposite poles of human conflict: war and sports. As an Israeli, the photo I had in mind was also of war and I thought that maybe our submission could be about something else. No, it was a double serving of war. Good choices though.
Great video, I love history so this was very interesting.
If you ever do decide for a follow up, or you just want to look at some cool pictures, there's a couple czech(Czechoslovak) ones I'd like to point out. We don't really name our pictures outside of galleries, so descriptions will have to be enough:
1. Klaus a Mečiar - before czechoslovakia split, we were a federation of 2 countries, each with it's own government. This picture shows the czech and slovak prime ministers planning the separation which happened without any form of popular vote in either country.
2. German invasion of Prague Castle - german troops marching into Prague castle gates after we were abandoned by western allies and de facto forced to surrender.
3. Soviet invasion of 1968 in Liberec - A lot of famous pics from this invasion, but there's one from the city of Liberec with a tank driving through a corner of a residential building which became really famous. And no, I'm not from that city.
4. "Peace in our time" - probably the only one with a "name", shows UK prime minister Neville Chamberlaine after he signed the Munich treaty with France, Nazi Germany and Italy saying that czechoslovakia has to surrender a large part of it's land, mostly to germany. Czechoslovakia famously wasn't even invited to this conference, was and still is seen as betrayal by the western powers as czechoslovakia was the only proper democracy in central europe at that time.
5. Nagano 1998 ice hockey semifinals - this year was the first time NHL players were allowed to play at the olympics and czech rep. won gold. Now while there's a lot of famous pics from the finals win itself, probably the most iconic comes from the semifinal shootouts against Canada with Czech players standing on the bench, arms around each others shoulders watching the shootout. Since it's from a victorious game against Canada, I dare you to show or at least look up this one ;) This dare also extends to any canadians reading this comment...

No problem, J.J., in Spain we are used to not being included. This video somehow looked liked G20 😂😂😂😂 Thank you for getting this overwhelming task done!
Which one would you say is our more iconic photo?
For me, it would be, or "The Falling Soldier" (muerte de un miliciano), or Tejero taking Congress hostage. Although the photo showing the aftermath of 11-M is up there.
@@nachoolo I would say "La muerte de un miliciano", definitely.
Spain and Portugal both, brother, it's sad
@@leoxholic3323 at least you guys can win Eurovision hahaha
@@pachoyuwerene94 yeah but you didn't have to listen to the winning song for the 4 months after Eurovision 🤣

He missed out Galtieri from his story on the photo.
“ I don’t want to be remembered as the guy who got hit by the Russians “
Lmao
Thanks for the little insight into my own national history. Australian here and I never knew about that Gough Whitlam story.
