You're not wrong, but it's important to understand that if you do not hit New Orleans, you have missed the best of the best (and most unique) southern food.
Back when the United States were being settled and farmed, families would start their day with a big breakfast with as many calories as possible. Their day was going to be very physical and difficult and they needed the calories to get through the day. Now we just eat these huge breakfasts on special occasions because they're delicious.
So guys, okra is a vegetable brought over from Africa by the slaves. It's popular in my wife's country, Brazil too with the same origin. There they make it with chicken in big one pot meal. They slice it in thin rings & fry which defeats the slime. Turnips are a root vegetable similar to yucca or yams. The greens are the top leafy part, very delish, similar to collard greens. Keep on traveling and trying. 👍
No the enslavers did not allow the slaves to collect vegetables and animals before being enslaved. It was brought by the white. From the enslaved peoples lands. Fact.
Hey Phil! I live in Savannah, Georgia (you're Southern neighbor). Cobblers (especially peach) are made with comforting and warming spices like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, etc. Although I agree a piece of peach cobbler would be delicious cold, there are few things on this Earth that are as heart warming as a freshly baked warm piece of peach cobbler. I hope you get to try that with a scoop of vanilla ice cream; truly something you will never forget. Hope you enjoy your stay here in the South! Come visit Savannah (the hostest city) soon!
Phil, just wanted to let you know that ocra is also available in Germany. It's not widely known, but it goes by the name of Lady Finger. I have only seen it a few times when I was a kid, but my mom never cooked it. You have to try it dusted in a corn meal breading (called fish fry), and fried in the pan with a bit of oil. The breading is thin and a bit crunchy. Very flavorful. My MIL used to make it like that.
I love how you show the beauty of downtown Greenville! I’m just up the road in Travelers Rest and in just about 15-20 mins, we can get to downtown and experience the food and that beautiful park!! Thank you!!!
YES Deana and Phil. Happy holidays, I've been here since the far east portion of the journey! Glad to see you guys have outrun every storm! Watching Deana dive headfirst without shame or mercy to get her equal bite is always the thing i'm looking for in each video and i'm sure this one will not disappoint.
I had to go and look up the answer to Phil‘s question; a turnip in German is die Rübe. So what they are serving is the green leafy portion of the plant while the white to pale purple root portion is the turnip that you typically see.
I can confirm for Phil that peach cobbler is indeed wonderful cold. I love it either way- especially with a scoop of ice cream. The ice cream doesn't have to be vanilla, either. My favorite to go with it is chocolate or chocolate cherry.
Growing up in Mississippi, we would have salt ham, blackeyed peas, homemade cream corn, and butter beans or snap beans for supper along with cornbread. For desert that night or for leftovers in the morning, my Mom would split open a big piece of cornbread and slather both sides with butter then smother in some strong molasses. We at it for desert after a meal and certainly would eat it for breakfast in the morning. So good.
Easy Cobbler is a quart or 2 cans of peach pie filling, 1 stick of butter , 1 cup of milk, 1 cup self rising flour, 1 cup of sugar. 1 melt butter in 9x13 casserole dish at 375 degrees in oven. While that is melting mix milk, flour, sugar in a blender. When butter is melted pull out of oven. Pour filling over butter then pour over the blended mixture. Return to oven until crust is browned and cobbler is bubbly
*Of course* do we have Okra here in Germany, Phil buuuuuut not deep fried 😅, usually you can buy it frozen or fresh and also I bought Okras in a glas-jar - I'm not quite sure if it's covered in salt or vinegar water - I didn't have try it yet!?!
What a relief you caught that raw chicken. I was freaking out when you cut into it 😄 We live in SC and we do not eat like that, I'd have a heart attack 😆 If we do, maybe once a month make breakfast, it's just bacon, eggs and toast. Nothing crazy. I've never had chicken and waffles but I did have a chicken biscuit once. It was good but you can only eat a few bites of it.
I go to South Carolina for the Mighty Moo Festival in Cowpens every year that I can over Father's Day weekend. We're always treated to great southern hospitality and the great southern cooking. I always look forward to it.
My Son did basic training for the Army at Fort Benning Georgia. We went to see him and got what we thought was going to be the best fried chicken.(we're from California) It was just mediocre. We did put it on rolls to make baby sandwiches in the morning, and it was pretty good. haha. That food you had looked awesome. Thanks for the video.
The origin of Chicken and waffles is attributed to the Pennsylvania Dutch not the south. It appeared there on menus and in cookbooks there 30 years before it appeared in the first southern cookbook.
Yeah, born and raised in Georgia. Never heard of the concept of chicken and waffles until2002-2005 time frame. Definitely is not some old southern tradition. And yes, southern food is one and the same as soul food. You get the same food at either type of restaurant.
I like peach cobbler warm and cold, but not room temperature. It is more refreshing cold, but more comforting warm. With vanilla ice cream on top, the cobbler needs to be warm to partially melt the ice cream, then you get comforting and refreshing!
Peach Toddler, too funny! Being from the south I am amazed at some of these dishes, we didn’t have Chicken and Waffles in my time, but hey, I left the south in ‘72. The biscuit pile on was new to me as well, but I could see someone who is a farmer toiling out in the fields all day as a much needed breakfast. It all looked good and tasty. Thanks Phil and Deana for taking us along🍯🧇🍗💕👍
Y'all make me drool, I lived in Greenwood SC for 7 years and went often to Greenville. I am American but live now in Austria and miss Okra, can't find this here anywhere. I can see Phil ain't American for sure, enjoy your videos always, since I live in Europe, I lost a lot of weight, no more sausage gravy on biscuits, I sure miss some of that good old southern cooking! 😄
Historically the loaded biscuits meal would be used by the workers that did a lot of manual labor and that would burn off the calories.Over time they forgot about the working part. The chicken and waffles were favorites of the club workers and the over night shift. They were like the concept of brunch but for dinner and breakfast.
Chicken and waffles has become a dish eaten in the South due to its connection with Soul Food, but it did not originate in the American South. The earliest version of the American chicken and waffle combo traces back to the Pennsylvania Dutch in the 1600s, where waffles were served with pulled chicken and gravy. The version we know today emerged much later with the opening of Wells Supper Club, a soul food restaurant in Harlem, New York, in 1938.
It is a good thing that you cut the biscuit sandwich to see the chicken needed to be cooked more. The large amount of calories for that dish at first is frightening but when you think about which meal should be the one with the highest, breakfast makes sense. Can you imagine eating that many calories late at night? Can't wait to see more
I'm a Midwestern guy who used to live in Florida and the only thing out of all that I've never had was the fried pork chop I've had pork chops baked in the oven but fried pork chops sounds divine
A lot of heavy southern breakfasts come from farmers getting in a big meal before going out to work a full day usually not eating again till late evening.
There are a lot of breakfast-lunch only places in Detroit area, too. Most are open 6/7 AM and close 2-7 PM. A small chain, Louie's is one of the best. But then we have the Coney shops, many of them open 24 hrs. You can get breakfast anytime from them, such as; National, Nicky D's, Detroit, Lafayette, Leo's. They specialize in coney dogs, but have much more on the menus.
I could imagine the first dish with the sauce as a meal on the way home after partying the night away. 😁 It's guaranteed to be just as difficult to eat when drunk as a gyros, but just as tasty. And the next meal is 10 hours later at the earliest. 😉

I am from the south but Maple Street Biscuit is totally lost on me. For the many people who love it enjoy! In fact, have mine too. Maybe I've seen too many biscuits and gravy in camp cafeterias and free hotel breakfasts.
Oh my that 1500 calories biscuit thing looked like a heart attack 😮 I would never eat something like that. Real southern breakfast biscuits and sausage gravy,no chicken and cheese or egg in it
I was born in Georgia. 1959. Lived here my entire life. We didn’t call it soul food, southern food. My mother made a pan of biscuits for (us-3 kids and parents) in the morning. Never was gravy that thick. Didn’t have meat except for the sausage that was in gravy.
I never understood the combination of chicken and waffles, I guess its the sweet n savoury but when you think about it the two dont go together usually but I guess they do.
Fruit cobblers are different from fruit pies in that the former only have a top crust and the latter have crusts top and bottom. Have you done German food in the USA? There are 2 or 3 in Greenville and at least one in Simpsonville.
Hi! It looks like you are at maple street, not trying to give away your location just wanted to say I worked at one for awhile and would have recommended somewhere a lot nicer for southern food. Also to mention I am a Southerner myself as well.
Uk the 'biscuit' is US cookie, but US biscuit is like a mix of British savoury scone but US eat it like British dumplings...savoury with broth ( mince and dumplings cooked in oven but more like dough with suet and placed in mince and gravey in oven tray peaked like moutains so tops crisp &brown), ( also steamed in broth on the hob not oven. not the Asian dumplings which are more like British pasties and Italian filled pasta like ravioli. I prefer sweet scones round like US biscuit, not triangular like shortbread.

I agree, German transplant. Now living in TN. My favorite meals are chicken fried steak or chicken (white gravy), chicken and dumplings, the slick kind. And of course, biscuits and gravy.

Mmm! I've been to Greenville numerous times. My fav brunch/lunch spot is Sully's Steamers in downtown. Lots of bagel sandwiches to choose from!
