  • Adam Hamilton pastors the largest church in The United Methodist Church, Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, KS. He has spoken several times on the floor of General Conference, and he has filmed segments representing the denomination's position on theological issues. He is very much in the mainstream with respect to the average UM pastor's theology.
In this segment, I sit down with TJ and our mutual friend Robby to go through clips of Hamilton's preaching that TJ had selected. This would be categorized as a reaction video. Robby brings his own flair to the conversation, marked with spiritual insights that neither one of us would have. We hope you enjoy!

I resisted commenting on this one. But, after so many sermon clips from this “Leading Methodist Pastor”, I had to. In my own journey I have been through quite a lot, including two near death experiences, working with death and dying, and more. I have spent a lifetime seeking some sort of grounding in the presence of God with my own love for Jesus Christ that I have had since I was a child. I have sought answers through Christian mysticism, new age, Sufi, and many other paths before finally coming back to my traditional Christian roots. This gives me a certain unique perspective on the modern Christian Church as I have seen the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as more important by far in my own life, than some of the dogma of the organization of the modern Christian church. Some of this is about the organization of the modern church, and trying to understand where I fit in. It also has given me a unique perspective after coming to the Gospel for so long, not according to “repeating after me” according to a Pastor or a particular church dogma, but instead by learning to meditate, pray, and listen to the Word of God by studying scripture.
It is not for me to say who will be in heaven, that is up to God. Rationally speaking, the Bible does say this is to be done through Jesus Christ. But, I always reference the last paragraph in John when people get up on their hind legs saying that, if it isn't exactly as it is in the Bible than it can't possibly be true. Clearly, according to the Bible, not all that Jesus did is included in the Bible.
John 21: 25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
I love God. And I know that there is such a thing as spiritual warfare. But, reading and debating about this or that nuanced meaning of scripture is to me, well, a bit foolish. This is why God created football (or your favorite sport) so we can all cheer our team on, and boo the other teams. With God, we are all on the same team. Scripture has rules and commandments, yes of course. We all have to do our imperfect best, every day. Who am I to tell another whether or not he can drink from the same spiritual fountain? Is it not better that I share my own enthusiasm for God with another, based on scripture? Even when I am only offering a single cup of water in Jesus name, I am not condemned for this.
God created the Church. The Church did not create God. The message that through Jesus Christ, and only through Jesus Christ, we can reach salvation is correct, and yet this is not meant as a punishment. I think a good preacher or offerer of the Word has the opportunity to make such a clear choice come alive in the mind of the hearer. Too often a preacher will take the easy way out by blaming the hearer of the Word, instead of stepping up his own sincere enthusiasm and allowing the Holy Spirit’s presence while he is speaking, not just from his own knowledge and his own mind, but genuinely asking to be an instrument for the congregation, imperfect, yet perfectly tuned to God.
There was another interview where the Primitive Methodist church guy was interviewed. He spoke of being part of the Holiness movement as the early Wesleyan Methodists were. What he was saying is that, when you give the Church and the organization of the Church to God, you still do what you have to do, but that doesn't have to mean creating large spiritually bureaucratic entities as the Methodist church has sometimes done. He referenced it as a “low church” where people’s testimonies and striving to live through The Great Commandment is the main point of an individual’s theological approach to being part of a congregation, rather than strictly adhering to a specific policy and dogma. I love being a part of a good church, but I am here to praise God, I am not here to praise the church.
I once was a part of the Unity new age Church, a Christian based cult. I now refer to the Unity church as a cult as it talks in liasse-faire language about the “Christ Within”, and “Christ Consciousness”, and “The Universe”. In fairness some of what I learned during that period had truth in it, and God always works things out for the lessons I need to learn, in spite of myself constantly getting in the way. Even so, you will not find a single Bible, Crucifix, or any mention of the Holy Spirit in a Unity church. It is all about the enlightened “Self” with a capitol “S”. Unity new age church is all based on positive thinking, like Dorothy clicking her heals together three times and saying, there’s no place like my having a new car, a new relationship, healing, more money, etc.
Having said all that, listening to this Methodist Minister from KCMO was really unpleasant. What I was hearing is what I might call scientific and intellectual rationalism, a very short walk down a slippery slope from “wokism”. While God may reveal truth to each of us as we surrender to God, no longer putting ourselves first, it is only by grounding ourselves in the Word of God (Jesus Christ), that we are protected from being seduced and led astray by the enemy. The enemy was defeated by Jesus Christ, but he has not gone away. He is off in the bushes doing pushups, and he will return when we stray from living by and in the Word of God. Amen. What I am hearing This KCMA pastor say saying is similar to what I used to hear in the Unity (new age) church, “ya know, it’s all good.” And, why should that be a surprise to anyone as the world headquarters for the Unity (new age) church is located in Lees Summit MO, just outside of KCMO.

Having watched a number of Hamilton's videos over the past year, I truly appreciated this presentation as your, TJ's, and Robby's sentiments well reflected my own. At one point in the video, I recall some discussion about science, and it gave me pause to reflect how scientists have had their theory of the big bang and proclaimed limit of the universe, as given in light years, turned on its head with new discoveries made by the James Webb Space Telescope that extends it (universe) beyond what man thought it to be. So, as typical, just when man thinks he has it figured out, God gives us a new perspective that reveals just how limited we are in our human capacities. May your words continue to be a blessing to all who seek the truth.

Whether it’s AH or many others, rather than spending the time and energy to deepen their understanding to better defend the faith, they apply their own logic. Your guest mentioned the typology of the sacrifice to clothe Adam & Eve & the prophecy of the coming of Jesus. There are concepts with the fall, sin, how God deals with man before and after the cross, the difference between Israel & the Church that are interrelated. Often it’s obvious they don’t have the foundation to make sense of the Bible in their own mind so they get off track.

The point about other religions is quite wrongly stated: it undermines all sense of obligation and urgency to proclaim the gospel to those who don't believe it. This has the effect of removing the great commission as a defining mark of the church. It's also counter to Paul's proclamation as recorded in scripture: Acts 17:30 "While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

Right on point. I do accept that Adam Hamilton is a believer, but his apologies for faith and the truths of Scripture are quite disconcerting. disheartening and lack all sense of urgency and power. He has built a big church, it is true, but I suspect it is by tickling the ears of the curious and telling them what they want to hear. I further suspect that the net he is casting has lots of gaping holes in it. Where does his flock go to get the meat of the Gospel, and not only the very weak pablum he is serving?

General Conference 202(0/4) put Jeffrey on the map for me. Now I am going back and checking past programs. Brother, THANK YOU!
This is just my 2 cents.
I am Wesleyan to the core, though Christ-follower is my ultimate commitment. The older I have gotten, the more I have learned to trust God with the questions I cannot fully answer. I LOVE logic, but my logic may be completely wrong or the product of wishful thinking.
We are instructed to proclaim that redemption through Jesus is THE path to eternal life. I have read C S Lewis' theory (much like A. H's) that some will realize that their worship was actually directed at Him. 😮
MAYBE that is right. A case CAN be made. BUT it is ultimately a bit of speculative theology. I HOPE it is true, and if somebody asked me I would tell them my hopes. But I would NEVER teach this as settled biblical theology. I tell everyone who asks these questions that I know that God is Good and Just and Loving, and I TRUST the Father to make the right decision.
As for me, I am called to proclaim the Good News of Christ as our only sure way to heaven. I am called to tell people to fear hell. I am not called to proclaim any specific individual as HAVING gone to hell.
My evangelistic statement would therefore be, God the Father has said the only way to Heaven is through His Son. We TRUST God to do right by non-Christians. But do you want to RISK everlasting hell, or accept the blessed assurance of everlasting life through Christ?
Of course a strong calvinist would say evengelism shows us those who are already the chosen sheep, vs. the already chosen goats. That might be a good tidy theological formulation, but I believe that does violence to a whole host of scriptures, and tarnishes the character of God.
    But, well, He IS God...

    • @plainspokenpod
      @plainspokenpod  2 місяці тому

These are things I have considered. In the end, God will indeed do whatever he is going to do. And yes, we have no heaven nor hell to put people into. God alone judges.
Yet it is important to consider how it is that we approach scripture. Is it something that might be lying to us to get us to act right? Or is it a reliable record of God's character and expectations? I think the only right way to read it is the latter. So I admire Calvinists for preparing themselves to submit to a God whose character is repugnant to our sensibilities. No matter how he governs, he is just and good, even if he doesn't behave according to our notions of these things.
Anyway, that isn't meant in a spirit of argumentation. You should just know that is what orients me as you stick with me (and I hope you do). Since you say you're Wesleyan to the core, I'll point you to an article I published on Saturday. I'll be interested in your reflections if you have any: jeffreyrickman.substack.com/p/what-methodism-needs-to-be

Awesome video. I really enjoyed what Robby and TJ bring to the conversation as well.
Matthew 7:13: Wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. 2 Timothy 4:3-4: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. Unfortunately, many are knowingly or unwittingly being led to the wide gate by the false and heretical teachings of Adam Hamilton and others (John Robbins, Van Stinson, Stan Copeland, …).

So in the account that portrays Jesus allowing the demons to enter into the swine (Matthew 8:28-34, Mark and Luke have parallels), was it just the man's depression that entered into them and caused them to jump off the cliff and drown themselves? I don't think so.

On the first point: the Lord alone decides who's "in" or "out" : 2Tim. 2:19 But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who calls on the name of the Lord turn away from wickedness.” The wheat and tares parable also warns us not to pronounce judgment, yea or nay, before the time. Adam Hamilton may be trying to dissuade Christians from putting their ultimate hope on right beliefs or good works, ruling others "out" to rule themselves "in", rather than putting their whole trust in Christ and his faithfulness. What annoys me about Adam Hamilton is his failure to warn people that there will be a resurrection of the unrighteous, that the tares will be gathered and cast into the fire. Without this warning, his "gospel" is incomplete, and therefore "different". This is where Paul's warning to the Galatians starts to kick in.

My husband was raised UMC and he said ‘I didn’t leave the Methodist church, it left me’. He said when they stood on the side of the World Council of Churches that was it. His mother was a lifelong Methodist and she just refused to see where it was going. When my husband and I married he joined the LCMS church which I was raised in and even it has changed. But not like this. Holy moly! This guy is NOT a Christian and he’s leading people straight to hell. Makes me fear for him. Just heard a sermon from yesterday (Hamricks’ church) on Jesus’ temptation. At one point he said Satan knows the Scriptures and better than we do. And he will twist them to deceive us. He tried it with Jesus - turn stones into bread. We must follow Christ’s example and use Scripture to drive OUT Satan, not invite him closer.

Yeah a lot of people don't know the history of globalism compromising the ecumenical urge in Christianity in the 20th century, essentially collapsing it all under the umbrella of Marxism. Mark Tooley cut his teeth founding the Institute for Religion & Democracy, which exposed with UM money that went to the WCC and/or NCC was used to fund paramilitary Marxist guerrillas in Central America. So obviously wrong.
It is absolutely correct to say that satan knows the scriptures better than believers generally do. Just because someone is quoting scripture or feeling/sounding holy doesn't mean that they are actually glorifying God. We have to 'test the spirits.' There are many spirits that compete for our affections. If we lack the discernment to determine truth from fiction, we will be lost. That's why so many today are lost. They would rather watch tv than read their bibles.
God bless you and your husband. I'm sorry for the failure of the church bodies in your lives. I hope you find yourself in a faithful believing covenant body now.

TJ… how could you have gone through this without presenting pastor Hamiltons famous, “Three Buckets of Scripture!”? I always get the impression that pastor H is embarrassed by God and feels like he needs to help him out. He seems to think that God was ticked off in the Old Testament, settled down a bit in the New Testament, but said things he didn’t really mean the whole way through. Pastor H then has to rush to the microphone and edit God’s words so people don't leave the auditorium.
I listen to quite a few Church services every week and pastor Hs Church is one of them. It’s puzzling because it always seems like he's going to dig into the scripture, then he ends up apologizing for something this is there. At other times, the preaching is so thin it's astonishing. One of his sermons was regarding “what if Jesus had a cell phone?”
Some of this video was light hearted, but it was actually quite sobering when you presented pastor Hs story of how he demonstrated to a fundamentalist pastor’s congregation that the Bible is full of errors. He willfully omitted key facts and then acted like it was the coup de grace. How many people did he lead astray that day? Pastor Hamilton's sleight of hand isn't so cute anymore is it? Pastor Hamilton will stand before God some day. I would imagine he'll have to explain the three buckets of scripture once more.

I can’t believe I forgot that was something he does. I just happened to have all those clips cut up and saved. Thank you for reminding me, I feel like that probably deserves a whole video to itself.
And good observation, it does seem like he’s constantly trying to “help God out” and apologize for what’s in the Bible so he can make it more palatable for his audience.

In Hamilton's honor, I have created three buckets of shepherds. In the first bucket are shepherds who are only in it for the money and praise, don't care about the flock, and believe that good shepherds are suckers. In the second bucket are shepherds who truly believe they are taking care of and feeding their flock, but have left gaping holes in the fence for all manner of wolves and other evils to prey on the flock. In the third bucket are the true and dedicated shepherds who live and die with their flock and earnestly do their best to keep their flock healthy and on the narrow path. I wonder which bucket we should put Adam Hamilton in?

Not that being first motivated by what you're against is a bad start. Hopefully the conversation helped you explore why you are against it, and what you are for. And hopefully that leads you to seek God's will through studying His word. After you do that, you might realize that the proper way to judge a tree is by its fruit, or in worldly terms, the merits of the speakers' ideas rather than the tribe of the speaker.
