Sadly, the UK is lost. Democracy is dead and we are witnessing the demise of Western civilization, all aided and abetted by a compliant population. Being true to yourself and your principles is the way to go, but it will come at an increasingly higher cost until all comply. I fear for my children and grandchildren.

@@larrypovey3302 Hitchin’s choice was his alone, as was everyone else’s, informed by his own research based on his health and age, not the wish to endorse the government. A debate isn’t about a wholehearted dismissal of everything your opponent does. It’s about a reasoned reasonable position based on the available facts. A position on each point of debate. His position on the vaccine was to accept it’s positive benefits for his own wellbeing. That the general population didn’t make an informed choice and were coerced into the jab is a reasonable point to debate.

Peter is right more often than not and I think he's spot on in his assessment of why worthwhile people don't go in to politics. To the best politicians going into politics was a vocation and not a career choice. That's been completely reversed now.

    • @brynleytalbot778
      @brynleytalbot778 2 роки тому

For vocation read career then advancement within it as the new motivation in every former respectable profession. The best opt out any way they can from the dross that’s now deemed acceptable to promote upwards. Where we once had a one or at the most a few irritating jobs worth’s they’re now the dominant force. Productivity? Down. And that’s why moral is so low. Purpose? Gone. The only value given to promoting oneself way beyond one’s merit. Welcome to a progressive descent to the bottom. Society is no more, said Thatcher, proclaiming it was now the individual and their family. The true rot began with free markets and the illusion of levelling up.

That one I can explain from the perspective of the anglo-american establishment, uniparty, Cathedral, pick your way to describe the group that had power from the 1980s until about 2008.
As an aside somewhere around 2008 either some portion of that group switched out for another group which changed the goals of the group or the group itself changed its goals somewhat. I am not saying that many of the policies that have brought us to where we are are new, just that there were some changes in the power paradigm around that time.
From the perspective of the elite they thought they had identified a correlation between per capita GDP and individual political sovereignty. They 100% believed that by increasing the relative wealth of the average Chinese citizen they were placing pressure on the Chinese system which would force the Chinese government to acknowledge increasing sovereignty of its citizens which has traditionally been made manifest in the form of improved private property rights as well as increasing political and economic liberalization and openness. I'm very serious, they thought making the Chinese rich would hurt them.
Yes, I am aware that there are multiple large-scale examples in the past which demonstrate that idea to be wrong. They were aware of that as well and handwaved them away has either outliers or special cases. There was also a significant chunk of personal interest involved where lots of folks thought they could make a lot of money and the process of the Chinese getting rich, I am aware that that played a role in their calculus but their publications don't talk about how much that played a role, reading between the lines I asked made it was a large role but not the dominant one. Additionally, from their perspective, if they could get rich while hurting the Chinese what's the problem.
Just in case someone reading this is curious my assessment is that they inverted cause and effect. Individual sovereignty, or more specifically private property rights and free exchange of goods and services between individuals, leads to a decrease in political power as more and more people just demand to be left alone, in an environment where being left alone by the government appears to be the path to greater wealth and prosperity. Making the government's the path to wealth and prosperity, which is what was done in the case of China, just increases the power of the government.
Side note, I think that a portion of that 2008 sea change in the West was the elite learning the wrong lesson, overcorrecting, and developing a belief that if China can be both rich and centrally powerful they can do the same without understanding that a substantial portion of China's wealth and power are fictitious and that the society undergirding the wealth and power are so radically different that tactics and techniques used in China are very likely to cause violent pushback in the West from populations which are used to a much greater degree of political sovereignty. Following that if they are able to clamp down on the demands for political sovereignty the damage it will cause to individual incentive modeling is such that it will cost the West its prosperity.

With regards to Sweden and COVID, it is important to understand the political structure of the country. For example, government agencies are all autonomous and independent from each other and the cabinet. During this pandemic, the Public Health Agency of Sweden is responsible for the policies and NOT the cabinet. The cabinet may not control or influence a government agency, which would be unconstitutional. Swedish society operates on good and transparent communications between government agencies and the people. There are no mask mandates or lock-downs because that would be unconstitutional. Sweden succeeds or not based on the cooperation and willingness of the people.

What will change the globalisation of trade, in addition to what John is referring to, is a major depression, which is inevitable. And China will be hit harder than most. Their internal property market is vastly overvalued and is effectively a state sponsored ponzi. This is similar to Japan in the 80s, after which a 40 year depression took hold. This will happen in China to and the West will discover that they have large populations who cannot get meaningful work. Companies will be forced to confront the role they must play in society rather than to just make the most money possible.

@@gdiwolverinemale2745 Greed is never fine, if one is depending on someone else to do the work for you. Globalist capitalists have been supported by liberals and conservatives alike, but the driving force has been our own corporations ever hungry for more money. They call the shots behind globalization. As for everything being fine until the rise of globalist economics, it wasn't. Prior to its great outburst in the 1980s and 90s, wages had already failed to keep up with a huge increase in productivity and the gap between the wealthiest and the rest of us, had already been growing. A certain inequality of wealth is expected in any civilization, but too much is a bad thing. And all that started with the arrival of Richard Nixon in the White House.

The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed -- for lack of a better word -- is good.
      Greed is right.
      Greed works.
Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.
Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind.
      - Gordon Gekko
... but .... Globalism is a completely different animal, particularly the open borders policy. The West is changing rapidly because the demography is being changed, intentionally. We seem not greedy enough to preserving our culture and national and historical identity
btw the current trend has nothing to do with Nixon. He was a great president. This period begins with the fall of the Soviet Union and the open borders policy. Reagan has actually done significant harm, granting amnesty to illegals

for our population level and the variety of products we actually did produce here.
So we've suddenly realised the political direction of our massive trading partner isn't what we thought it would become.
I love that one.. We all just noticed, because couldn't admit it 10 years ago, for various reasons of vested self interest.

People run the system. Few select do it. Negative outcomes result when nothing is learned from history of the mistakes of others. Learning is key. Not smart have sometimes huge impediments to EVERYTHING least of which is learning lessons. Decision makers seek and take advice. Some advice is VERY bad. Blame should be assessed properly on both the decisions taken and the advice given rather than being rational and sound, being foolish and nonsensical unless done purposefully to cause disaster. Thus conspiracy is a plausible explanation for why negative outcomes were intended to happen to cause a particular outcome that changes fate and destiny.
