I found the map a little daunting at first, because of its sheer size, but you soon realise it's like any other Metro system. Once you have one sussed, you have them all sussed. Topping up a travel card couldn't make things easier. Great Video!

These types of video are really useful for familiarisation if you've never visited a city or a country before. Someone below mentioned the security checks as you enter stations. There are airport-style baggage scanners and security personnel have hand-held body scanners. Also, if you're planning to meet someone outside a subway station, make sure you agree on the exit. Exits are lettered A, B, C etc. At some stations, there's an A and an A1. Important because the exits are often far apart.

Back when I lived in Beijing, there were only three lines - 1, 2 and 13 (not including the Line 1 extension on the east). It was only 3RMB (if I remember right) for any of the first two lines - to anywhere (almost - except for the oldest stations on the west side of Line 1, where the platforms were split)... and 5RMB for Line 13 (I think - even to transfer). Lines 1 and 2 still had ticket ladies, while line 13 had people give the tickets (after purchasing) for the automatic turnstiles. There were no gates on the platforms nor scanners before going in. Also, the old train cars were not really connected - two would be through a set of doors, but then you had to go out in order to get to the others. The cars weren't air conditioned at all - so very hot during the summers ;o (not sure if they are now)! Some of the oldest trains still had the Chinese national flag on the front. Ah, those were the days - miss them much :) ~

As of Feb 2023, buying a single trip ticket from the machines has become borderline impossible for foreigners, because the purchase requires Chinese ID.
No doubt for purposes of (now past world) CoVid tracking and (still valid) preventing social credit offenders from getting around.
If you don't have Chinese ID available, your option currently is to go to the service desk at a station and buying it from the staff there. Who, mostly, do not speak English.
They can use translator devices, but you will still need to either pronounce where you want to go, or have it written down to show them.

Since it will be hot , should we go independent or buy a private package.
I have done a lot of research on subway and attractions.
I am just worried about walking in the sun for my wife between places. With private tour you will be in a car.
I guess we can always find a coffee place near by.
Tour will cost a little more with convenience but give us less adventures and freedom.
