Kirk did an amazing job with the solos on this album …I really don’t think anyone else could have done better since he was open to the criticism from Lars and bob he served each song well!
For a second i though the title said "Kirk-Struggle with solo" and when i watched this i was like "Where the fuck is the struggle!?" because this sounds awesome xD
Awesome solo. I often play it to warm my fingers up when I play. Its just some minor pentatonic scales and an e minor arpeggio. But its how he puts it all together and the techniques he uses. Epic solo! Even when I'm completely warmed up.... Its still a bitch playing it perfectly. On the rare occasions I do.... Its a good feeling! 🤘 👿🎸
kirk definitely uses a circular picking motion quite often... watch how little his wrist moves 0:33 - 0:37 (where I believe he picks every note, unlike on the album version where IIRC there are some pull-offs [although this video naturally his pieced together from several different takes using several different guitars/guitar sounds])
I listened to this album many times but never really “listened” to the songs after my friend of misery because by the time I got to the end I was already tired of listening lol and I assumed the last songs are not as good and I got to this solo one time and I couldn’t believe it lol it’s a hidden gem and one lick sounds like yngwie, this is in my top 5 KH leads now lol
I've been listening to Metallica since Ride the Lightning, and I don't care what anyone else says. Kirk is the heart and soul of Metallica. James and Lars are simply the face and the arrogance of Metallica.
Me and my close metallica buddies always had an inside joke where we'd do that fist pump action at the end if we did something awesome like beat a game or something or bought something top notch.
When the solo is starting it sounds like Malmsteen, Kirk in an interview said that he learned part of Malmsteen style but he stopped because he didn't want to be a copy of him
I fucking had this on vhs when it first came out, early 90s,awesome solo by Kirk, coming from me,and I slag him off all the time cos he is overall pony lol
As someone who has never been in the studio. Is this how guitarists typically record their parts? With the drummers track instead of a click or metronome?
Yeah... Most of the time the lead won't know exactly how they'll play the solo until the bear bones of the drums and riffs are laid down... Makes it much easier to get into the groove and feel how the solo plays off the backing.
Holy shit! Kirk just destroyed that fucking guitar solo! It doesn’t matter how many times I watch this video b/c I have been for 22-23 years now. This clip is from the “A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica” videos. I had them 18 years ago on VHS tape. Shit most people don’t even know what that is now. I was about 15 years old back then and would religiously watch this stuff. This particular solo has always been one of my favorites. It really showcases his talent in a concise way. God, I love Metallica and Kirk Hammett is one of the best lead guitarists of all time! Thank you for making it look so easy Kirk! You’re truly the man!!
I love Kirk’s solos especially in Kill em All, And justice for all and of course the Black album. He was in his absolute prime in this album and his solos were all killers! His solos are all different in every song and I’d never get bored of listening to them again and again. No point picking up and down the fretboard with countless arpeggios for hours on end. Don’t get me wrong, I have my heroes like Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Dimebag, etc, but the shredder thing is just so overrated.
Hey. Load and ReLoad had guitar solos, they just weren't the types of solos people were expecting. Hell, the Outlaw Torn has one of the best Metallica solos to date.
Compared to the crap that hanneman & king made a career out of playing this is actually pretty good playing. He was decent till the mid 90s and then it went downhill, the shit vibrato and lousy bends have always been there but he used to be a tasteful soloist that actually could compose a solo
He’s so good he can even switch guitars mid solo
Multiple time lmao...
It was a montage from A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica, Vol. 1 - The making of TBA.
@@tylernewton7217 thank you Ted that was the joke.

I really do think this is the best solo on the album and criminally underrated

Proof kirk is a beast! Ans will alway be. Age might have took a bit of a toll, but he will always be my inspiration forever!

I love metallica !
Beast??!!
Actually he is playing live more clearly than in 2 decades
For a second i though the title said "Kirk-Struggle with solo" and when i watched this i was like "Where the fuck is the struggle!?" because this sounds awesome xD
Same lmao
The struggle comes when he cant use the wahwah pedal
The notes in between…
Lol it's my favorite solo of his...so cool
The struggle is within
Underrated song and underrated solo. Also the breakdown after the solo is the best riff on that album.
The breakdown riff after the solo on through the never is IMO best on the album

This is the Kirk I like
Me too, one of his best. No awful vibrato
Same here...this solo is just awesome
Lets try another guitar : /
0:43 Kirk when the notes in the middle do not fuck with him.
Wym by notes in the middle? Do you mean like open strings not ringing out?

Its an inside joke about Kirk being confused by notes through the Saint Anger recording.

god those harmonics at the end always get me. fantastic solo
I feel like the best part of the black album is all the songs that aren’t the mainstream ones. 🤘🏽🤘🏽
All these guitars that play for multi-platinum bands making comments on here never ceases to amaze
If he kept making solos like this in the later albums, he'll probably innovate his skills.
The way he dances after the solo

I don't really get the Kirk Hammett jokes.

Fucking remember watching this on VHS
Yeah right after the vid cuts off he finishes bob really annoyed kirk by saying let's try again. Gees he was annoyed u could see it

It might also be pentatonic wankery, but boy it sounds tasty
ok, lets do it again!
for some reason i read the title as "kirk struggles with solo"
James.....that's not how i wrote it!
No Wahs, and no descending noodle, just all out pentatonic!
Its not all out pentatonic, there’s some phrases that arent utilizing just the pentatonic scale
if you listen to the song on the record, from 0:22 to 0:33 is played with a wah petal
Holy shit

Very underrated solo IMO! Probably took him forever to compose it but whatever, he was forced to put effort in and it showed. Now? lol smh!
Kirk is easily the worst Metallica guitarist while Dave Mustaine is the best.
Without the Les Paul he's playing the solo with the same guitars he used in Seattle '89...
The Doctor Well it is only a year or two after 1989 so why wouldn't he?
Yeah the Jackson and the ESP from 1989!!

The riff that follows could be a song all on its own
This is what got me into soloing, that pentatonic run at the end man, at the time it was amazing to me
