That's what I did. Camping cot, laundry baskets, 3 drawer dressers plastic Walmart. Portable rubber collapsible sink, small go pro plus power station, clam shell solar panels, USB chargeable fans and lights. Butane 1 burner stove and small heater and small swamp cooler to keep cool. Cost about $350 for everything. I have a Dodge Grand minivan. Love it. Thanks again for all the knowledge you share with us.

Pro tip: Get totes that are different colors or use a strip of colored duct tape to give you a quick reference for what is inside it. Example: blue for toiletries, red for kitchen tools etc.
Yes! Or use something (marker, nail polish, ink, tape) to write something on the outside on every side. I write K for kitchen, T for toiletries etc etc.

Sandy Cakes If you’re not super tech savvy, I recommend the Jackery explorer power station ( 240 if you don’t need tons of power and the 500 if you think you’ll need more). Then you can order a 100w portable solar panel on amazon and you’ll be set. The solar panel is about $200 and the explorer 240 is about $250 so it’s a little pricey but not too bad considering how simple it is to use and how much power you’ll be getting. Good luck 👍
You could take a towel or sheet and drape it over the metal cot frame under the mattress and it will hide everything stored under the cot giving a nice clean look to your mini home.😊

I'm not a fan. It takes all of the force from the vertical upright and puts it on the small crossmember /weld. It'd be better if you put a support dowel inside the PVC to keep the force on the leg.

I think this PVC trick is nice, especially for someone who doesn't have a whole lot of strength. I would personally rather go for metallic tubing, or just shortening the other legs cause I think in time the PVC might deteriorate under the weight of the person sleeping... But that would take a while anyways. By the way, if you want your cut to be straight, you can take a piece of thin cardboard with a straight factory edge to it and wrap it around your pipe to mark it, then all you have to do is cut along...

I’m 63, my husband and I go for several days at a time in the summer. We have a Chevy Uplander with foam mattress and milk crates filled with our stuff. Fun.

I too, came to the conclusion that a van is a solution, to my financial situation, furnishing it with a cot with enough storage underneath, and plastic containers, etc.. I'm looking at a Toyota Sienna - taking ALL of the seats out, except the front ones... I see that the second and last row of seats can weigh quite a lot; taking them out will be a smart thing to do, and make room for a cot and storage...
Ladies, once we are on the road, we can travel with other ladies. I would encourage you to try to buy a high roof van because at our age, getting dressed lying down will get very old. I was lucky to purchase one only five years old for under $10,000. Use items you already have in your home for the build. I was living in my van for six weeks when we moved and it’s just a change of mindset. Some people don’t understand, but I was so relaxed not having the huge mortgage hanging over my head! Safe and happy travels!

I cant remember the name of their group, but I almost think that Bob did a video about them. They travel with small tow behind trailers and set them up really nicely inside and out.

The legs of the cot can be used as anchor points for bungee cords. Stretch bungee cords from leg to leg to further prevent the under the cot plastic bins, drawers and totes from shifting about while the vehicle is in motion. Also, @15:25 a piece of plywood can placed over the green totes to act as a table. Take a measurement of the size needed to lay on top of the totes and then have the home improvement center, like Home Depot, cut it for you. When not in use, simply sandwich the plywood between the mattress and the cot frame

Made my minivan bed from futon spring and legs from an old pallet, lower so I could sit up. Hung a hammock when I had a friend along. Plastic drawers from second hand stores, cookware from rummage sales. Works like a champ.
I put a small cookie sheet under my stove just in case there are any spill overs while cooking. It makes for easy clean up and protects the plastic totes from heat.
Cookie sheets are so cool. I use them under the little stove, and for wind breaks around the stove when outside, and as a serving tray, and as a place to put tools when working on equipment. Oh, and of course to make cookies and pizza!
One thing I would do with a van conversion is pvc pipes for tent poles and a large tarp from Harbor Freight to make a tent room off the back door of the van. Having a wind and rain proof room to stand in and cook "chuck-wagon" style helps remove some of the "cramped" feeling during foul weather. It's also not difficult to use sch40 pvc pipe to make a frame for an awning over the side door. A "front porch" layout under the awning also helps alleviate a lot of claustrophobia.
I have a friend who uses extendable paint roller handles - they extend to something like 6-7 feet! She uses them for tarp setup over and around her tent. I want to get a few for myself as $$ allow!

thank you for this Bob. Most likely, I will never "live" in a rig. My sticks and bricks costs less than most rent and I'm content. Where this helps me is, I have children that live hundreds of miles away, and what I truly need is a "rolling hotel room". This fits that perfectly. My own space when I'm at their house and my own hotel on the road.
same here, my house is so inexpensive it would be crazy to leave it to full time, people cant even rent an apartment for the amount I pay for a decent sized house with front and back yard, I just bought before things got insane. but I love my camper van, I have it all set up as IF I was going to live in it but just use it for weekend trips and to avoid paying for hotels when I travel. sometimes we take it even just for day trips because its nice to have a little home base with a place to go to the bathroom, a sink to wash hands, a little fridge ect. I love vans!
I am looking at the Teardrop trailer option as my rolling hotel room. As my trips will be few and far between I think the trailer will better suit my lifestyle without cluttering up either my vehicle or home.

I did build for my daughter. We didn’t know what to do for a bed. But I found industrial plastic shelves. We cut the legs down and zip tied it together. For the ‘mattress’ we used an outdoor cushion for a lounge chair. Then we used things we had at home-plastic bins and the like. Thanks for a great video.

Exactly... I lived in my mini van for 9months last year with my two dogs and became debt free... I now rent a room which works well.Bob actually saved me from what could of been a very bad time in my life ✌️
This is genius. You're going to help a lot of people with this! A couple of hints 1. Put a few layers of cardboard on the cot before you put your bedding down, to cover those bars that kill your back. 2. Measure your bins that you plan to use under the cot, and don't cut the legs off too short for them to fit.
That cot will kill your back no matter what type of cardboard you put under it. What he doesn't say in this video is how uncomfortable that "no-build build" will be. That cot is cheap, and you get what you pay for. Same with the shelves and storage units. There's a reason a build is better: it lasts longer and is more comfortable. This video shows you how to be homeless in a van.

@@danholmes2369 Yes, it's an emergency solution. Improvements can be added as the situation evolves. For instance, 1/4" plywood with holes drilled into it for air circulation could create a flat surface for the mattress. Cheap and simple, as soon as one can find the money for the materials, or better yet, a resource that's throwing offcuts away.

@@chezmoi42 I like the basic suggestions. But I also do know how to use a fewl tools. I am an empty nester. I have a lot of leftover/behind furniture and furnishings that I can convert/repurpose, if I choose to. Once an old entertainment system, the top of it is on the floor in my sewing room that I haven't used in years, and I could maybe repurpose that. And something I have that is really cute, I don't know that I can convert it, but I'm sure there's a way, is an old telephone desk that has the lamppost through the end of it with a shade even. I would have to run a electric, but if I had a jackery I could. Or I can convert it and make it solar or something instead. Or just put a solar light bulb in the socket and not plug it in. But it sure would make the van homey/quaint. There's the cubby hole under-the-table next to the seat where the phone books and such would go. That could be used for storage for other items. Say like maps, coloring books, supplies, crafts and road games. And right underneath I could place my own fashion picnic basket with the picnic plates, cups and such, already inside of that. I wouldn't even have spend money on those things.
I've been watching 100's of videos. And most of them are really good. But this video has to be the best I've ever seen. Straight to the point, simple, cheap and doable. I love it. Even I could do this.

When I think of all the vets who are living outside, this could be a great solution for some of them. A gentleman in my area was featured on the news saying he lived on the street in warm weather so he could use his small pension to rent a room in the winter. How much better this could be for him!
@@jamesmurphy2828 I don't think gas mileage is the priority for folks living in a van unless they are doing a LOT of driving on a regular basis. If you're living in and around a city, 16 mi/gal would probably be fine relative to paying for an apartment.
I wanna chime in with how awesome this is and add to what one viewer pointed out about this being a portable hotel room to visit her kids and another viewer saying how this is "stealth." Yes!!! In some neighborhoods, you or the people you're visiting can get in trouble if you park a camper for too long in someone's driveway. No one can complain about this one. It's just a mini van!
My kids and I took an impromptu trip to the beach in our Toyota Sienna when they were younger and decided to stay overnight, couldn't find a hotel because some big event was happening and the 4 of us slept in the van overnight and they loved it and to wake up and see the ocean was something remarkable. I'm buying another one and doing just this to spend the summer at the beach this year. The best thing is that it's so easy to drive somewhere or walk to a restroom and I'll use my gym membership to shower every couple days. I can't wait!

I just picked up a transit connect. So much to consider with the building. Almost overwhelming the cutting for a roof fan is my biggest concern. This video inspired me to just start with a floor cot and some cube storage and enjoy my new bedroom on wheels. Great content.
I am beginning to realize that I can use furniture that I already have! I have soft sided bags and "drawers". Look around your house. You may discover that you have a lot of things that you can use for your adventure.
I’m a tent camper and camp for weeks not days, organization is a must. That being said I’ve been looking into van camping since I’m a retired woman (fixed income) and a van in my opinion is way better than a truck with a shell, not having to break camp saves lots of time, and I want to hit as many National Parks as possible. You only live once, right? Your tips are so informative and useful because I can be a minimalistic. I intend to travel with my 2 dogs, for protection, company and because I love them to death, thus I need space for them (70 and 35 lbs, not small, they love camping) I subscribed to your channel as I feel your ideas are excellent guidance for the future to come. Thanks a million. Hint pots pan etc get the stuff for backpacking, you can get cheap stuff, everything nests together and takes very little space, same as a camping cot, very comfortable and not as wide.
If I wasn't so attached to my flowers, this would be the life for me. At 69 and partially disabled my dumpy, old, paid for, shack with lots of perennials is a better fit. I may have to join the patreon anyway because I know that in spite of not having anything fancy, I am blessed to have a roof over my head, gas heat and indoor plumbing. You guys rock!

I have been watching a lot of videos about converting vans into campers for quite awhile all the other ways I could not afford because I am on disability this is the one I am going to do mini vans are a lot cheaper than cargo vans and step vans plus they get better gas mileage I am so glad that I have found a way that I can travel and live in a van thank you for this video I am 65 on disability and want to see these United States and with the amount of money I get from disability this can now be done thank you again I am so happy

That's it Leah, I started in my camper pulling Ram 3500 and have been doing it for years and years. Used to get embarrassed but then saved some good money working and staying in one truck. I am probably the most prolific minimalist in the country. All a person really needs is foods , drink , and shelter and of course a few rags 😆
This is the most important video you have ever done! , giving hope to many people who have to adopt vanlife and who lack the necessary craftsmanship. I am adopting this layout in my planned campervan (ford transit custom 2.0 liter diesel in England). The idea of using low weight matertial and reducing petrol/diesel is excellent. The layout is very simple and can fit nearly every van. This video left me with a lot of thinking, before my next planning. A comfortable bed and good insulation do not have to be made by tons of wood! a simple water system means less problems! simplicity is the name of the game for those who lack the money and the time to turn their van into a campervan. I am using the extra money I am saving to buy a newer van. Excellent video!!! Thank you many times for this informative video.
bottle-cap taps are also very useful, same for having a bowl in which you drill a few holes in the bottom in a space slightly smaller than a wide bottle cap, a water jug with a wide bottle cap and cut the cap then glue it to the bowl. Or simply glue the cap to the bowl (ideally center, but not necessary), then use a nail and a hammer to punch holes from the bowl to the cap, or if it's a plastic bowl, you can use a very hot nail instead, to also make the connection waterproof. With a bottle with a tap cap and a sink connected to a water jug, you can have the tap-and-sink part of a kitchenette, and the rest is a table for cutting and prepping inside the vehicle, a folding table (can be the same table with different heights available) and a stove for cooking outside, you have a complete mobile kitchen.

Depending on length, a small futon couch might work, too, so that you can use the bed for seating too, if you choose! Walmart has one that looks like a couch, but folds down into a double bed, with adjustable side pieces, that can be popped up as arms when its in the sofa position! I have one, works fine. As I don't have a mini van or full van, I couldn't say if it would fit; but if it would, that would be a good option!
I like your content a lot more than those other van life videos I see on UA-cam who seem to just focus on fancy production quality. Your stuff is more realistic and straight to the point!
I just wanted to say thank you for caring about those who are struggling with homeless due to the high cost of housing. I'm in my 50's work full time and still have difficulty making rent. I'm looking for alternatives and this gives me hope as I have absolutely no building skills what do ever. The one thing I would really be interested in is how to add a shower, because I would need to shower before work.
One idea ...get a kiddypool plastic ($10 $ general) or blow up. Take a hulahoop ( yes !!! Lol ) hang it from the top with bungie cords then warm up water put it in a spray bottle . I use the garden size pump it spray it works great 👍 oh and a fold up stool to sit on
Lowes' and Home Depot cut wood for free might cut PVC too, just ask. This "no build" build is totally doable, and a way to test if this would be a lifestyle to pursue...

Home Depot got massively bent when I asked them to cut PVC. And they did a crappy job, just to sure they sent a "message" that they didn't want to do it. Uneven measurements and ragged edges.
Hi Bob, Great idea. If I may offer two suggestions I think you will find them helpful. 1st. Once you Mark the the length for your PVC take a piece of tape and wrap it around the pipe at the marks, this will give you a perfectly straight line to follow while making your straight every time . 2nd. To prevent all the weight and pressure on the PVC ( cold climates can make the PVC brittle at the uneven pressure point at the cross bar), drill to small holes through the PVC continuing through the cot leg. After that take small drift pins or a bolts that will match the diameter of your drilled holes. This will also secure the leg extensions to the cot. Thank you, Bob Mahaney Baltimore Maryland

9 years and counting. Selling everything and doing this. I’m so jaded by cost of living and keeping such a darn small percentage of my inadequate wages. I work my tail off until I’m sick sometimes and still struggle. I live in a really expensive area and am a single mom who can’t move. In 9 years, my sweet kiddos will be independent and I’ll be lonely as they leave the nest so this is the perfect solution to everything! Watching this makes me feel excited about the future rather than trapped. And this is definitely simple enough for anyone to do!! Thank you!
I am all in favor of this simple build. I have done much the same with my 2005 Sienna. A few other ideas: 1) I agree with Blazin' Saddles that leveling the cot is optional. 2) I leave the passenger side rear seat up soI have a comfortable chair and storage behind it for my seldom used Luggable Loo (in which I replaced the 5 gallon bucket with a lower 3 gallon bucket from Lowe's.) 3) I added the window rain guards as noted below by Taz Mahal. I also have screening to maintain ventilation. Great job.
I'm thinking about a Sienna, as well... But, when I get one - I'm taking out All but the two front seats out!! I have a couple of very light, folding chairs, which I'll use... I'm thinking about the space I'll need - and the weight that will be taken off since I'm removing the seat, and which will be replaced with my storage.
Pausing at 13:05: you get a bag from Cracker Barrell when you buy something in their store and those bags are awesome. Also, when you order something from Amazon, tick the checkbox to have it giftwrapped because that is just a decorative bag with drawstring ribbon and they are excellent quality bags to store stuff in, really good to have and it’s free with your order.
Theresa M - you are welcome. We use the Amazon giftwrap bags for computer cables because they can get lost easily and don’t really fit in a drawer well.
And mini-vans are tremendously economical fuel-wise. The 'tailgate' can serve as a makeshift awning while you sit there with a lawn chair and little table if you like. I've always said minivans have more room in them than many people realize. At the very least you have a portable, mobile bedroom so you don't have to shell out hundreds of dollars for a room when all your really want is some shuteye. Also, don't forget, they have the extended versions of these as well, which provide another foot or two of length. Great video. I've been subscribed for a few days now....glad I did!

Great video! I'm a 63 year-old grandmother who did a no-build on my 2008 Toyota Sienna. I used a regular twin metal bed frame with a piece of plywood and a twin mattress. I use under-bed and behind-bed plastic storage drawers and containers. I have two solar lanterns. I tinted the side windows and use a custom cover for the back window and a curtain behind the front seats. My potty is a 2-gallon lidded bucket (I'm small!) with a "separator" insert. I am fortunate to have a room at my daughter's home, but my minivan camper is my ticket to cheap, enjoyable freedom weekends and summers. Thank you for sharing the message that simple can be best of all!
I agree! I plan on doing a build like this, for the same reason. We always get really bad costal flooding, when storms hit, and having a ready to go campervan can really help to alleviate some of the stress that evacuations bring!

This is the most valuable video I’ve seen on this subject. It’s overwhelming to imagine taking on a build that you need to live in and have money for but this gives me peace of mind to know if I ever need, it’s not as hard to live comfortably off the street and be independent.
I love this! On May 1st I am going to be homeless. I need to find a cheap car to sleep in while I save for 4 months to buy a $3000 minivan to live in full time. I live on the lowest social security, so it will take all of the 4 months to be able to buy my minivan. I have saved your videos to use as reference when the time comes. I did put in for the Homes on Wheels minivan giveaway this coming spring. However, sleeping in a pos cheap car for 4 months won't be too bad. Martha it may seem like bad news but it will be great ! You can do this I was homeless for 2 weeks lived in my small car , essentials and access is vital I had a Coleman cook, stove water and cooler and food, cooles are a ripoff unless you buy the cloth kind at $ general . I parked every nite in the homeless shelter lot with my blackened screens on for privacy and comfort. Use aluminum foil panels made from foil and cardboard to insulate , place gal bags of water in so when you add ice they will get cold and the foil will keep them cold. Headline a must but solar is good to if you find them. Goood luck to you dear it will show you so much abt how strong you are and all this chaos you are in ? Will end us being a great adventure . I do a set up on my channel too. Same cost but I did mine a little different. Kitchen in the back. Bed on the other side and back seat totally out as to use the deep well. With solar.
Really like the extension idea for the legs of the cot. I hadn't thought about that and it will come in handy. FYI, keep an eye on the multi drawer plastic storage units. On some of them the frames pop apart. A three drawer wouldn't fit in the back of my car for kitchen storage, but a two drawer went in perfectly. Also, the grocery sacks many of us are required to buy anyway these days are usually flat bottomed, fairly sturdy, and cost 99 cents.... and they hold quite a bit. Waiting on the solar episode because, try as I might, that stuff just doesn't stick in my head!

I grabbed a twin bed spring on the side of the road, put an old twin mattress on it and set that on 4 Crates. I only bought the crates at a used store. I had that in the back of my truck which had a shell on top.
This is such a great resource! I am planning on creating a kit like this for my 2010 Dodge G Caravan, not to live in permanently, but as a Van-cationer to allow for cheap road trips. I also like the idea of having a mental backup plan in my life for if something ever happens to me where I am no longer in a financially stable situation.
Came back to this video again, because I lucked into finding the exact same cot shown in the video at a garage sale for $10. I already have my two 4" matresses that I have been using on the floor of my van, so this is an great upgrade just in time for a week long trip in March. Couple of things to note, for me at least, the couple inch slant on the floor has not been a bother to me sleeping on the floor or on the frame, and my head barely touches the ceiling as is, so I don't want to use the PVC method and give up any more headroom. I also don't want to cut the legs off the cot itself, because I value the flexibility to move the cot and mattresses into a tent. Everyone sleeps different, but I just left the slant and STILL sleep better in my car than I do in my house. Second, a really nice feature of the stow and go third seat in the Dodge Grand Caravans like the one shown is the 60/40 seat. Where Bob put those two greens totes, there is a seat that can pull up out of the floor with room to spare, making a built in living room chair. That also leaves more kitchen space in the back.
That's what I did. Camping cot, laundry baskets, 3 drawer dressers plastic Walmart. Portable rubber collapsible sink, small go pro plus power station, clam shell solar panels, USB chargeable fans and lights. Butane 1 burner stove and small heater and small swamp cooler to keep cool. Cost about $350 for everything. I have a Dodge Grand minivan. Love it. Thanks again for all the knowledge you share with us.

Sandy Cakes If you’re not super tech savvy, I recommend the Jackery explorer power station ( 240 if you don’t need tons of power and the 500 if you think you’ll need more). Then you can order a 100w portable solar panel on amazon and you’ll be set. The solar panel is about $200 and the explorer 240 is about $250 so it’s a little pricey but not too bad considering how simple it is to use and how much power you’ll be getting. Good luck 👍
You could take a towel or sheet and drape it over the metal cot frame under the mattress and it will hide everything stored under the cot giving a nice clean look to your mini home.😊

And bulk garbage days as well.
Old bureau drawers can also work well for storage under the bed especially when it’s a lower bed.

I'm not a fan. It takes all of the force from the vertical upright and puts it on the small crossmember /weld. It'd be better if you put a support dowel inside the PVC to keep the force on the leg.

I think this PVC trick is nice, especially for someone who doesn't have a whole lot of strength. I would personally rather go for metallic tubing, or just shortening the other legs cause I think in time the PVC might deteriorate under the weight of the person sleeping... But that would take a while anyways.
By the way, if you want your cut to be straight, you can take a piece of thin cardboard with a straight factory edge to it and wrap it around your pipe to mark it, then all you have to do is cut along...
No not really because now you've shift all the weight on those cross bar and they're are not positioned to take that kind of weight.

Ladies, once we are on the road, we can travel with other ladies. I would encourage you to try to buy a high roof van because at our age, getting dressed lying down will get very old. I was lucky to purchase one only five years old for under $10,000. Use items you already have in your home for the build. I was living in my van for six weeks when we moved and it’s just a change of mindset. Some people don’t understand, but I was so relaxed not having the huge mortgage hanging over my head! Safe and happy travels!

There is a nationwide group of women who do just what you are describing, and they strike me as some of the nicest people on earth. I cant remember the name of their group, but I almost think that Bob did a video about them. They travel with small tow behind trailers and set them up really nicely inside and out.
This was inspirational. Most of us are a paycheck away from being without shelter. It’s very comforting to know there’s a way to survive, no matter what. If nothing else, it’s great hacks for just a camping trip. Thank you for this!

The legs of the cot can be used as anchor points for bungee cords. Stretch bungee cords from leg to leg to further prevent the under the cot plastic bins, drawers and totes from shifting about while the vehicle is in motion.
Also, @15:25 a piece of plywood can placed over the green totes to act as a table. Take a measurement of the size needed to lay on top of the totes and then have the home improvement center, like Home Depot, cut it for you. When not in use, simply sandwich the plywood between the mattress and the cot frame

Made my minivan bed from futon spring and legs from an old pallet, lower so I could sit up. Hung a hammock when I had a friend along. Plastic drawers from second hand stores, cookware from rummage sales. Works like a champ.

Cookie sheets are so cool. I use them under the little stove, and for wind breaks around the stove when outside, and as a serving tray, and as a place to put tools when working on equipment. Oh, and of course to make cookies and pizza!
One thing I would do with a van conversion is pvc pipes for tent poles and a large tarp from Harbor Freight to make a tent room off the back door of the van. Having a wind and rain proof room to stand in and cook "chuck-wagon" style helps remove some of the "cramped" feeling during foul weather.
It's also not difficult to use sch40 pvc pipe to make a frame for an awning over the side door. A "front porch" layout under the awning also helps alleviate a lot of claustrophobia.

I made a tarp for the side of my dodge caravan. I sit under it in the rain and feels great. I also cook under it when raining.
I have a friend who uses extendable paint roller handles - they extend to something like 6-7 feet! She uses them for tarp setup over and around her tent. I want to get a few for myself as $$ allow!

thank you for this Bob. Most likely, I will never "live" in a rig. My sticks and bricks costs less than most rent and I'm content. Where this helps me is, I have children that live hundreds of miles away, and what I truly need is a "rolling hotel room". This fits that perfectly. My own space when I'm at their house and my own hotel on the road.

same here, my house is so inexpensive it would be crazy to leave it to full time, people cant even rent an apartment for the amount I pay for a decent sized house with front and back yard, I just bought before things got insane. but I love my camper van, I have it all set up as IF I was going to live in it but just use it for weekend trips and to avoid paying for hotels when I travel. sometimes we take it even just for day trips because its nice to have a little home base with a place to go to the bathroom, a sink to wash hands, a little fridge ect. I love vans!
I am looking at the Teardrop trailer option as my rolling hotel room. As my trips will be few and far between I think the trailer will better suit my lifestyle without cluttering up either my vehicle or home.

I did build for my daughter. We didn’t know what to do for a bed. But I found industrial plastic shelves. We cut the legs down and zip tied it together. For the ‘mattress’ we used an outdoor cushion for a lounge chair. Then we used things we had at home-plastic bins and the like. Thanks for a great video.

This is genius. You're going to help a lot of people with this! A couple of hints 1. Put a few layers of cardboard on the cot before you put your bedding down, to cover those bars that kill your back. 2. Measure your bins that you plan to use under the cot, and don't cut the legs off too short for them to fit.
That cot will kill your back no matter what type of cardboard you put under it. What he doesn't say in this video is how uncomfortable that "no-build build" will be. That cot is cheap, and you get what you pay for. Same with the shelves and storage units. There's a reason a build is better: it lasts longer and is more comfortable. This video shows you how to be homeless in a van.

For instance, 1/4" plywood with holes drilled into it for air circulation could create a flat surface for the mattress. Cheap and simple, as soon as one can find the money for the materials, or better yet, a resource that's throwing offcuts away.

@@chezmoi42 I like the basic suggestions. But I also do know how to use a fewl tools. I am an empty nester. I have a lot of leftover/behind furniture and furnishings that I can convert/repurpose, if I choose to. Once an old entertainment system, the top of it is on the floor in my sewing room that I haven't used in years, and I could maybe repurpose that. And something I have that is really cute, I don't know that I can convert it, but I'm sure there's a way, is an old telephone desk that has the lamppost through the end of it with a shade even. I would have to run a electric, but if I had a jackery I could. Or I can convert it and make it solar or something instead. Or just put a solar light bulb in the socket and not plug it in. But it sure would make the van homey/quaint. There's the cubby hole under-the-table next to the seat where the phone books and such would go. That could be used for storage for other items. Say like maps, coloring books, supplies, crafts and road games. And right underneath I could place my own fashion picnic basket with the picnic plates, cups and such, already inside of that. I wouldn't even have spend money on those things.

When I think of all the vets who are living outside, this could be a great solution for some of them. A gentleman in my area was featured on the news saying he lived on the street in warm weather so he could use his small pension to rent a room in the winter. How much better this could be for him!
And he'd have "wheels" to get to a part/full time job too!!!

@@jamesmurphy2828 I don't think gas mileage is the priority for folks living in a van unless they are doing a LOT of driving on a regular basis. If you're living in and around a city, 16 mi/gal would probably be fine relative to paying for an apartment.

I wanna chime in with how awesome this is and add to what one viewer pointed out about this being a portable hotel room to visit her kids and another viewer saying how this is "stealth." Yes!!! In some neighborhoods, you or the people you're visiting can get in trouble if you park a camper for too long in someone's driveway. No one can complain about this one. It's just a mini van!
My kids and I took an impromptu trip to the beach in our Toyota Sienna when they were younger and decided to stay overnight, couldn't find a hotel because some big event was happening and the 4 of us slept in the van overnight and they loved it and to wake up and see the ocean was something remarkable. I'm buying another one and doing just this to spend the summer at the beach this year. The best thing is that it's so easy to drive somewhere or walk to a restroom and I'll use my gym membership to shower every couple days. I can't wait!

I just picked up a transit connect. So much to consider with the building. Almost overwhelming the cutting for a roof fan is my biggest concern. This video inspired me to just start with a floor cot and some cube storage and enjoy my new bedroom on wheels. Great content.

I am beginning to realize that I can use furniture that I already have! I have soft sided bags and "drawers". Look around your house. You may discover that you have a lot of things that you can use for your adventure.
I’m a tent camper and camp for weeks not days, organization is a must. That being said I’ve been looking into van camping since I’m a retired woman (fixed income) and a van in my opinion is way better than a truck with a shell, not having to break camp saves lots of time, and I want to hit as many National Parks as possible. You only live once, right? Your tips are so informative and useful because I can be a minimalistic. I intend to travel with my 2 dogs, for protection, company and because I love them to death, thus I need space for them (70 and 35 lbs, not small, they love camping) I subscribed to your channel as I feel your ideas are excellent guidance for the future to come. Thanks a million. Hint pots pan etc get the stuff for backpacking, you can get cheap stuff, everything nests together and takes very little space, same as a camping cot, very comfortable and not as wide.
Great suggestion about the pans for backpacking! That's what I bought! They fit neatly together in a mesh bag no less!
If I wasn't so attached to my flowers, this would be the life for me. At 69 and partially disabled my dumpy, old, paid for, shack with lots of perennials is a better fit. I may have to join the patreon anyway because I know that in spite of not having anything fancy, I am blessed to have a roof over my head, gas heat and indoor plumbing. You guys rock!

I have been watching a lot of videos about converting vans into campers for quite awhile all the other ways I could not afford because I am on disability this is the one I am going to do mini vans are a lot cheaper than cargo vans and step vans plus they get better gas mileage I am so glad that I have found a way that I can travel and live in a van thank you for this video I am 65 on disability and want to see these United States and with the amount of money I get from disability this can now be done thank you again I am so happy

That's it Leah, I started in my camper pulling Ram 3500 and have been doing it for years and years. Used to get embarrassed but then saved some good money working and staying in one truck. I am probably the most prolific minimalist in the country. All a person really needs is foods , drink , and shelter and of course a few rags 😆
This is the most important video you have ever done! , giving hope to many people who have to adopt vanlife and who lack the necessary craftsmanship. I am adopting this layout in my planned campervan (ford transit custom 2.0 liter diesel in England). The idea of using low weight matertial and reducing petrol/diesel is excellent. The layout is very simple and can fit nearly every van. This video left me with a lot of thinking, before my next planning. A comfortable bed and good insulation do not have to be made by tons of wood! a simple water system means less problems! simplicity is the name of the game for those who lack the money and the time to turn their van into a campervan. I am using the extra money I am saving to buy a newer van. Excellent video!!! Thank you many times for this informative video.
bottle-cap taps are also very useful, same for having a bowl in which you drill a few holes in the bottom in a space slightly smaller than a wide bottle cap, a water jug with a wide bottle cap and cut the cap then glue it to the bowl. Or simply glue the cap to the bowl (ideally center, but not necessary), then use a nail and a hammer to punch holes from the bowl to the cap, or if it's a plastic bowl, you can use a very hot nail instead, to also make the connection waterproof. With a bottle with a tap cap and a sink connected to a water jug, you can have the tap-and-sink part of a kitchenette, and the rest is a table for cutting and prepping inside the vehicle, a folding table (can be the same table with different heights available) and a stove for cooking outside, you have a complete mobile kitchen.
I'm 58 yrs old, U.S. Navy vet, and have been interested in doing a project like this. Have had changes in life as we all do. Am playing it by ear right now and your video I am saving for future use. Thanks much for it. You seem real and down-to-earth.

Depending on length, a small futon couch might work, too, so that you can use the bed for seating too, if you choose! Walmart has one that looks like a couch, but folds down into a double bed, with adjustable side pieces, that can be popped up as arms when its in the sofa position! I have one, works fine. As I don't have a mini van or full van, I couldn't say if it would fit; but if it would, that would be a good option!

I just wanted to say thank you for caring about those who are struggling with homeless due to the high cost of housing. I'm in my 50's work full time and still have difficulty making rent. I'm looking for alternatives and this gives me hope as I have absolutely no building skills what do ever. The one thing I would really be interested in is how to add a shower, because I would need to shower before work.
One idea ...get a kiddypool plastic ($10 $ general) or blow up. Take a hulahoop ( yes !!! Lol ) hang it from the top with bungie cords then warm up water put it in a spray bottle . I use the garden size pump it spray it works great 👍 oh and a fold up stool to sit on
Lowes' and Home Depot cut wood for free might cut PVC too, just ask. This "no build" build is totally doable, and a way to test if this would be a lifestyle to pursue...
It's also somewhat modular. If you want to add something later, you can do so.
Home Depot cuts PVC pipe to order. Did that last summer for my garden build.
I've had Lowes cut pvc leg risers for tables. I think they will do 8 cuts for free and charge a small fee per cut therafter

Home Depot got massively bent when I asked them to cut PVC. And they did a crappy job, just to sure they sent a "message" that they didn't want to do it. Uneven measurements and ragged edges.
Hi Bob, Great idea.
If I may offer two suggestions I think you will find them helpful.
1st. Once you Mark the the length for your PVC take a piece of tape and wrap it around the pipe at the marks, this will give you a perfectly straight line to follow while making your straight every time .
2nd. To prevent all the weight and pressure on the PVC ( cold climates can make the PVC brittle at the uneven pressure point at the cross bar), drill to small holes through the PVC continuing through the cot leg. After that take small drift pins or a bolts that will match the diameter of your drilled holes.
This will also secure the leg extensions to the cot.

9 years and counting. Selling everything and doing this. I’m so jaded by cost of living and keeping such a darn small percentage of my inadequate wages. I work my tail off until I’m sick sometimes and still struggle. I live in a really expensive area and am a single mom who can’t move. In 9 years, my sweet kiddos will be independent and I’ll be lonely as they leave the nest so this is the perfect solution to everything! Watching this makes me feel excited about the future rather than trapped.

I am all in favor of this simple build. I have done much the same with my 2005 Sienna. A few other ideas: 1) I agree with Blazin' Saddles that leveling the cot is optional. 2) I leave the passenger side rear seat up soI have a comfortable chair and storage behind it for my seldom used Luggable Loo (in which I replaced the 5 gallon bucket with a lower 3 gallon bucket from Lowe's.) 3) I added the window rain guards as noted below by Taz Mahal. I also have screening to maintain ventilation. Great job.

Theresa M - you are welcome. We use the Amazon giftwrap bags for computer cables because they can get lost easily and don’t really fit in a drawer well.
And mini-vans are tremendously economical fuel-wise. The 'tailgate' can serve as a makeshift awning while you sit there with a lawn chair and little table if you like. I've always said minivans have more room in them than many people realize. At the very least you have a portable, mobile bedroom so you don't have to shell out hundreds of dollars for a room when all your really want is some shuteye. Also, don't forget, they have the extended versions of these as well, which provide another foot or two of length. Great video. I've been subscribed for a few days now....glad I did!

Great video! I'm a 63 year-old grandmother who did a no-build on my 2008 Toyota Sienna. I used a regular twin metal bed frame with a piece of plywood and a twin mattress. I use under-bed and behind-bed plastic storage drawers and containers. I have two solar lanterns. I tinted the side windows and use a custom cover for the back window and a curtain behind the front seats. My potty is a 2-gallon lidded bucket (I'm small!) with a "separator" insert. I am fortunate to have a room at my daughter's home, but my minivan camper is my ticket to cheap, enjoyable freedom weekends and summers. Thank you for sharing the message that simple can be best of all!

I agree! I plan on doing a build like this, for the same reason. We always get really bad costal flooding, when storms hit, and having a ready to go campervan can really help to alleviate some of the stress that evacuations bring!

This is the most valuable video I’ve seen on this subject. It’s overwhelming to imagine taking on a build that you need to live in and have money for but this gives me peace of mind to know if I ever need, it’s not as hard to live comfortably off the street and be independent.

On May 1st I am going to be homeless. I need to find a cheap car to sleep in while I save for 4 months to buy a $3000 minivan to live in full time. I live on the lowest social security, so it will take all of the 4 months to be able to buy my minivan.

Martha it may seem like bad news but it will be great ! You can do this I was homeless for 2 weeks lived in my small car , essentials and access is vital I had a Coleman cook, stove water and cooler and food, cooles are a ripoff unless you buy the cloth kind at $ general . I parked every nite in the homeless shelter lot with my blackened screens on for privacy and comfort. Use aluminum foil panels made from foil and cardboard to insulate , place gal bags of water in so when you add ice they will get cold and the foil will keep them cold. Headline a must but solar is good to if you find them. Goood luck to you dear it will show you so much abt how strong you are and all this chaos you are in ? Will end us being a great adventure . I do a set up on my channel too. Same cost but I did mine a little different. Kitchen in the back. Bed on the other side and back seat totally out as to use the deep well. With solar.

Really like the extension idea for the legs of the cot. I hadn't thought about that and it will come in handy. FYI, keep an eye on the multi drawer plastic storage units. On some of them the frames pop apart. A three drawer wouldn't fit in the back of my car for kitchen storage, but a two drawer went in perfectly. Also, the grocery sacks many of us are required to buy anyway these days are usually flat bottomed, fairly sturdy, and cost 99 cents.... and they hold quite a bit. Waiting on the solar episode because, try as I might, that stuff just doesn't stick in my head!

I grabbed a twin bed spring on the side of the road, put an old twin mattress on it and set that on 4 Crates. I only bought the crates at a used store. I had that in the back of my truck which had a shell on top.

This is such a great resource! I am planning on creating a kit like this for my 2010 Dodge G Caravan, not to live in permanently, but as a Van-cationer to allow for cheap road trips. I also like the idea of having a mental backup plan in my life for if something ever happens to me where I am no longer in a financially stable situation.
Came back to this video again, because I lucked into finding the exact same cot shown in the video at a garage sale for $10. I already have my two 4" matresses that I have been using on the floor of my van, so this is an great upgrade just in time for a week long trip in March. Couple of things to note, for me at least, the couple inch slant on the floor has not been a bother to me sleeping on the floor or on the frame, and my head barely touches the ceiling as is, so I don't want to use the PVC method and give up any more headroom. I also don't want to cut the legs off the cot itself, because I value the flexibility to move the cot and mattresses into a tent. Everyone sleeps different, but I just left the slant and STILL sleep better in my car than I do in my house. Second, a really nice feature of the stow and go third seat in the Dodge Grand Caravans like the one shown is the 60/40 seat. Where Bob put those two greens totes, there is a seat that can pull up out of the floor with room to spare, making a built in living room chair. That also leaves more kitchen space in the back.
I didn't know that Santa traveled around as part of VanLife during the off season.😁😁
