Dear sweet John was no real singer.., he was very self-conscious about his voice, and he’s a shy man in general. His bass sings for him.

Queen had THREE great voices (now only two). Most bands are lucky if they have one great voice. Foo Fighters is a lot like Queen who are their idols. They sang with Brian when Queen was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (They performed “Tie Your Mother Down”).
Brian has sung on many songs, his voice is a register lower than Freddie’s (baritone), while Freddie sang at a higher register (tenor) most times. That’s what makes Queen amazing, they harmonize and make a big sound. Roger sang all the high notes, like in Bo Rhap. John sang in the early years of Queen, he felt he wasn’t a good a singer than them, so he quit singing. He has a nice voice, though not a powerhouse like everyone else. You can hear him on “Somebody to Love”. Very pleasant, I think.
Sadly, John came back for this song and then retired to spend more time with his family. As far as he is concerned, Queen died when Freddie did. John is still the band’s bookkeeper, he handles all of Queen’s money and has a say in projects Brian and Roger are doing, like the musical “We Will Rock You’.
After the death of Freddie, Bri formed the Brian May Band, but when his friend drummer Cozy Powell died in a car accident, Brian couldn’t go on. There’s a MTV video featuring the two of them called “Resurrection”.
Hahaha! Sorry about the long comment, I guess I was channeling my inner Queen Fan Gurl.

The lines "It's another tricky situation", "Now the party must be over", and "There's a face at the window" are throwbacks to older songs of theirs, "It's a Hard Life", "My Melancholy Blues", and "Keep Yourself Alive", which include those original lyrics. I love how they included memories and references to their past. It's kind of like how Freddie's "I still love you" in "These Are the Days of Our Lives" video is a reference to "Love of My Life". All of their songs meant something and wove together.

John Deacon never got over Freddie’s death and retired from music soon after this song was released (1997) Brian, in the year after Freddie died, suffered from depression and even contemplated killing himself because it was just too much and he still gets emotional on tour when they play recordings or films of Freddie to sing along with. Roger is a bit more resilient but there was an interview a while back when he told how he got a phone call on his way to Freddie’s house saying there was no point cos Freddie was dead, and Roger was trying hard to hold back the tears.
This song must have been so hard to do but it is a beautiful tribute to their friend.

@ShariSez1 Honestly, Freddie said they would stay together until they die. Freddie did exactly that and I don't think he would mind Roger and Brian continueing Queen. They have different lead singers, but they don't publish new songs under the name of “Queen“. They keep the memory alive. I think it's also thanks to them still performing and marketing that Queen still is as popular as it is.
It's very beautiful Brian always sings “Love of my Life“ live with a picture of Freddie in the back. I'm sure it must've been very hard for them to continue, because every single song reminds them of their dead friend who will never share the same stage anymore.
I totally understand John couldn't do it and that's fine, but Roger and Brian are not doing the wrong thing either.

They're singing their love for and sadness at losing Freddie. Even years later they missed him like the day he passed. Brian's voice is the closest to Freddie's and sometimes on certain notes they sound exactly the same. I love Brian's solo voice and Roger's solo voice but together Queen were "A Kind of Magic". I came to Queen just a couple of years ago. I wasn't allowed to listen to most music while growing up so I missed all of Queen. I found this song after I found out that my best friend passed. The line, "There's a face at the window" gets me every time and I cry EVERY time. :( It's okay to cry. Sometimes there just aren't words and crying is the only way to get the feelings out. If you love someone, let them KNOW. You never know when they'll be gone forever. (Freddie's last vocal recordings were for the song "Mother Love" in which he sang about his battle with AIDS. He never finished recording the song bc he grew too weak on his last recording day and went home and said he'd come back and finish it but was never able to. That was in May 1991 and he passed 6 months later.)

  • @walover165
    @walover165 5 років тому +7

Yeah, this song is utterly gut-wrenching. This was Queen mourning publicly. And it's a good pickup about how sad John looks; this is the last time he recorded with Queen (I think he did one other public appearance with them later that year). After that he retired from public life. Even though John was the youngest, he ended up looking the oldest; Freddie's death aged him tremendously. I was quite surprised that you were surprised about Brian singing; have you not done a Brian song yet? He had some good ones; '39, Some Day One Day, All Dead all Dead, and Long Away are some of my favourites where he sings lead.

I've made this comment on the reactions of others & want to add it here also.
The symbolism in this song runs deep… "A hand above the water, an angel reaching for the sky"…just look at an image of Freddie's statue at Montreux, Switzerland, overlooking Lake Geneva. You'll see it. "They're only flying too close to the sun"…in our solar system, the planet closest to the sun is Mercury. Don't forget that Brian May has a PhD in astrophysics. He knows these things. Many of the lyrics are snippets from other Queen songs…"tricky situation," & "such an operation," for instance. I think you will find more as you listen to more of their songs. And the ending scene, the champagne glass on the piano, the single shaft of light, the sounds of footsteps & a door closing, these need no explanation. And "cut," that's the end. It is all so sad, & so beautiful.
The opening image of the flying man brings to mind the Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus, the father & son who made wings of feathers & wax in order to escape from the tower in which they were imprisoned by King Minos of Crete. Icarus, in his youthful exuberance & excitement about flying, failed to heed his father's warnings to not fly too close to the sea, lest he get his wings wet, or too close to the sun, lest the wax holding the feathers should melt. He flew too close to the sun, the wax melted, & he fell into the sea & drowned. So there's that, too.

Karolyn Hoover didn’t know a lot of this. Thanks for sharing and yes in context makes a lot of sense as I’ve seen many comments on other videos saying that Freddie was warned by friends to be extra careful when news of the AIDS virus started to appear but Freddie seemingly ‘flew too close to the sun’ as per Icarus. The beauty in their song tries it’s best to help contain the devastating effects of Freddie’s death on his fans. I truly believe he never could have imagined how many people he and Queen touched and so how many after over a quarter of a century still feel his death so keenly 👑

Karolyn Hoover - Yes, I picked up the symbolism of Mercury and Icarus as well and the references to their other songs. He flew too close to the sun for sure and it was his undoing but he lived more in his shortened life than someone who lives to 100!
The lyrics go so deep and have immense meaning. At the start Brian mentions "the broken-hearted, no one could reach them, no one but you". Freddie considered himself a bit of a misfit due to his sexual orientation, his being bullied for his teeth and being called a "Paki" by some ignorant people. He had all of those things against him but became an icon and other people felt, if he could do it, so could they. I think that is part of why he touched so many people. "No one could reach them, no one but you". He was what he was and didn't give a damn! I think in spite of his stage persona, he felt broken-hearted in some ways himself. He was one of them.
When he said "a face in the window", I believe he is saying Freddie will always be with them.
I do believe he was John's mentor and without Freddie there was just no point.
The epitaph on his statue sums Freddie up so well....
"Lover of life, Singer of songs".

To me this song is one of Queens best, it's also an uplifting song as well as being very sad. For anyone to right a tribute song about someone they loved is very emotional, very hard on the writer, full of moments of joyful memories whilst knowing more similar memories will never be made. So it's uplifting in the sense that Brian, John and Roger were able to overcome those emotions to write and perform such a beautiful, loving, caring tribute to their friend, bandmate, and brother in recording.

I don't think anyone ever reacted on YT to Roger's Old Friends so it'd be amazing to see you do that song. He was arguably the closest, they were flatmates in the early days, worked together selling second-hand clothes before Queen and were pretty much platonic soulmates. He even named 2 of his kids after Freddie's suggestion. And he still gets emotional talking about Freddie's death (personally I think he feels guilty for being too late to see him that one last time).
They all had extremely difficult time dealing with Freddie's death. For Brian it added to depression and death of his beloved father (and iirc his father in law died around that time as well?). John completely disappeared from public life; he had a very touching older/younger sibling dynamic with Freddie who 5 years his senior always tried to protect him. If you want to cry a bit more watch the interview Bri and Rog did a week after Freddie's death. Their grief is palpable yet they still loyally protect him from media. And I still admire the strength they had to put together that tribute concert in 92 (tho there are moments where you can see their masks crack a bit and raw emotions surface).

this song was a true tribute to show that Freddie was really like a brother to them, not just their frontman. Yeah, the looks on their faces, and listen to their voices; their sorrow is clear and doing all they can to keep it together and not break down crying, (not that I'd blame them if they did). John expressed all his sorrow in every note he played for this. I also recommend "these are the days of our lives" Freddie's last, onscreen music video and a heartfelt, loving farewell to his family, friends and fans. fyi, Roger had some eye problems so those are prescription shades. Yeah, Brian has a gorgeous voice. I also recommend 39, a more bouncy, folk space travel song that Brian sang.

Diana North - "39" sounds bouncy and folksy but the message is deep. I'm sure you know already. Volunteers go into space to find a new home because earth is dying. When they return they have aged but a year (Brian could explain the space/time continuum) but all of their loved ones, even grandchildren they never knew, are long dead. It ends, "For my life still ahead, pity me". He has to live out his life knowing everything and everyone he loved is gone. Brian's lyrics were often very deep and thoughtful. This one tears me up.

You wouldn't know it, (because he was not one to be in the spot light like the others) but John was very close to Freddie. (as they all were of course, but he didn't seem to bounce back like the other two to continue on with the music) Brian wrote this for Freddie after he died. Watch it again all the way to end....the symbolism of the champagne glass at the empty piano is beautiful. Great reaction!

lusmas99 - "The Show Must Go On" has always been one of my top 5 favorite Queen songs, but it never made me feel sad or tear-inducing... Until I saw BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY in the theater on opening weekend. I was *REALLY* hoping that they would find a way to include "Who Wants To Live Forever?" & "The Show Must Go On" into the film in some way. I wasn't disappointed, nor even really surprised, when I heard where they placed WWTLF? Kindof obvious, actually. Anyone who can genuinely call themselves a FAN of Queen could *FEEL* it coming a mile away by that point in the film ;-)
Now, I've always been the kind of person who keeps his ass firmly glued into his theater seat until after ALL of the credits have finished rolling(the James Bond & Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse franchises got me into this habit LONG before the MCU was even considered possible). And, as "Don't Stop Me Now" faded out, I was thinking 'Okay, we got at least another good 3-or-so-minutes of credits left to go through, so they're probably gonna end with "These Are The Days Of Our Lives", and I'm gonna end-up crying at the end when Freddie says "I still love you" like my dog just died or something'. But then, as the opening notes of TSMGO started playing, the tears began streaming immediately :'-(

Bless you. No doubt, this song gets you if not prepared..even if you are! At the very end as the music stops, you hear voices, doors open, and Freddie's voice saying "Cut" as he had so many times over years in studio sessions. A bit of.history Brian May told the story that he wrote this song soon after Freddie's passing, sending it to Roger. They waited a few months then began working on it...the last song John Deacon played on with Queen. As they began putting the video together Brian said they wanted it in black & white, and to set the camera angles as though someone was walking slowly through the recording studio while they were 'rehearsing' , just observing it all rather than quick moving camera shots. The piano was set up with a glass of champagne, Freddie often kept cups and glasses on the piano. At the videos very beginning as the camera brings the viewer down into the studio, is a camera shot of the Queen Crest, drawn by Freddie when the band formed as Queen. It is something often seen painted more glamorously. These musicians were/are so thoughtful and intelligent about their music and it's changes. Each had strong backgrounds in college, a graphics illustrator, an engineer, a dentist & an astrophysicist. I have wondered if that attributed to some of the unique/incredible Queen sound besides their obvious musical gifts! Thank you so much for playing this! If you're interested, another emotional yet beautiful song is, Mother Love...no video was made. Brian had to finish the last verse due to Freddie's passing, it on the album Made In Heaver. I agree with Roger Taylor's comment about the song Mother Love, some of the passages & notes Freddie sang in it are "spine chilling". And beautiful. Sorry this comment is so long, obviously I'm a Queen fan from long ago. I recommend all the songs!

I would highly recommend 'Mother Love'. It was Freddie's last ever vocal recording. Recorded in May 1991, 6 months before he died. He couldn't even finish the song. He sang the first two verses, and then had to go home as he was too tired to finish the song. He said that he would come back and finish it... he never did. So you hear Brian singing the last verse to finish the song. As a tribute, at the end of the song, they include Freddie's improv crowd chant from their Wembley 1986 concert, and then a split second of every Queen song he recorded back to back, like his life flashing before his eyes. So the song itself literally spans Freddie's death, it's very moving.
Could you react to that one? I would recommend a lyric video, or just one with the Made In Heaven album cover on screen if you want to concentrate on the lyrics, as the official music video is more of a mini sci-fi film, and doesn't show Queen at all. It can be distracting from the lyrics. You will need tissues as well.

There is so much so in this song and much of Queen’s Music because Freddie was a huge fan of Aretha Franklin. he would get on the stage in concert and asked the fans to play some games & I would start singing Aretha Franklin songs and they would sing along with him.
