Apologies for mispronouncing "Sault" the whole trip. I now realize it is "Sue"
Apparently you haven't lived in Michigan very long.
Salt/Sue
Really like the long form vlog style videos especially about Tesla road trips. Very interesting to see different driving challenges in various parts of the country. Cool seeing how efficiency changes with different conditions! Keep up the good work! Your video style is very chill :)
Good to hear, I appreciate it!
Really enjoy the long vlog style videos - keep up the great work. :)
Good to hear, I appreciate it!
Love this type of video Alex! And also great Chargeway plugs too ;). It’s really cool to see your efficiency numbers with the winter tires too in the M3, especially in those colder temps. I’m glad there is finally some Superchargers in the UP! Now that we have our M3 we can use those same chargers to get up there. - Tyler
Thanks so much!! Definitely going to have to make a return trip in the summer
@@Sibs yes! Absolutely! We love it in Michigan.
Great information! It confirms some of what I suspected. Also, showed some interesting problems that you encountered. Did you ever figure out the display problem?
Nope... I will say it's never happened at this frequency before. I'm thinking a combination of cold weather and driving the car that much over multiple days.
Thanks for showing us the worst case scenarios for EVs! Driving up to Berkeley next weekend and Rosarito the weekend after 🙌🏼
That should be a bit more enjoyable 😉
15:28 those mounds are massive! I've never seen snow in my life 😢
Very cute
That PU was a F150 Lighting test mule, great spotting!!!!
You got it 😎
I really like these efficiency videos Alex! Thanks. Are there hotels (these days) that offer charging? Are there more Level 3 chargers in the northern states due to the cold?
Also, If that vehicle you were asking about, I think that is the new Ford Maverick (smallest truck). Also, I recommend that you use windshield washer fluid that contains Rain-X in it. Being that you are in Ohio, I would also get the Bug washing one for the warmer weather. It will really help keep the water beading up and off it while on higher speeds. It has been so helpful in all my years of driving.
Thanks!
Yes, both of the cities I stayed in had hotels with charging, but unfortunately they were booked for the days I needed them.
That is not the Ford Maverick, but is a new Ford vehicle!
Thanks for the tip on washer fluid!
I definitely enjoyed this long form video, mainly because the conditions were pretty extreme compared to what I am used to. I was weird how many software glitches that you had. Does the voice control work when the screen is dark? If it does, you might’ve been able to tell the wipers what to do.
Didn't even think to try voice commands...
@@Sibs next time!
I am very confused why you did this but Pog I guess 😂
Haha I had to be up there for work stuff. Just recorded along the way 😅
Did you consider driving to pictured rocks lakeshore? I am contemplating doing that with my model 3 this winter but I am not sure if the charging situation up there is good enough to do that.
Great video Alex! I thought that the radar is underneath the bumper cover above the grill inlet?
It is. The video I showed was after the ice had melted off. Could've been more clear about that
@@Sibs No problem 😉
I haven't even finished the video yet and wanted to comment ,Thank you! I have yet to find an actual video on Teslas in winter weather...Edit: an for the people think its a waste of time sitting at a charger station is kind of dumbfounded...During that time if you wanted to you can take a 30 minute nap, read a book, catch on emails, stroll through your phone if you like, watch an informative UA-cam video etc etc....What's the difference between someone having to get their card out pump gas wait until it fills up then siting in the car, find some music, etc etc...People always seem to have underlying jealousy with questions or statements.
Hi BC, check out the Bearded Tesla Guy's video on winter driving from Indiana to Chicago (I think) or his trip from Indiana to Colorado and back. Wind and icy roads had him slip-sliding away on the standard tread tires which he recommended replacing with snow and ice tires in Winter.
You might want to check out the videos posted by UA-camr Bjorn Nyland. He tests tons of EVs and lives in Norway, so lots of winter trips, lol.
Nice report, thanks for that. Question: isn’t it bad for the battery to charge to 100% that many times in a row? I would think it would be better to charge up to 90% instead, but that would obviously increased the number of stops.
Yeah, but it's not going to hurt doing it a few times like this. It becomes an issue when you charge to 100% daily. That's one of the reasons phone & laptop batteries wear out so quick.
Wish I could find some precise data regarding motor efficiency but did find enough to see that the motor design is already really efficient. While it may be true that some efficiency is lost at higher RPM, that loss might not be nearly as significant as aerodynamic drag which increases as a function of the square of speed. Given the tire size and final gear ratio, the Model 3 motors turn 7,124 RPM at 60 MPH. At the top speed of 145 MPH, the motors turn at 17,216 RPM, and for the Performance, with a top speed of 162 MPH, the motors turn at 19,234 RPM. So, given that really wide range, it’s possible that Tesla selected a gear ratio to run the motors at the efficiency “sweet spot” at typical highway speeds to help offset some of the drag loss. Of course, this is all just wild speculation on my part, so it might not even be worth 2 cents. Having just completed our own cold weather trip this week, I would agree that cold batteries and cold passengers are a big range killer.
I know how cold it can be in upper Michigan because that’s currently where I live but after we sell our house I’m planning on moving back to Wisconsin hopefully down by Milwaukee down that way and I also plan on possibly getting a Tesla after we sell the house so me and my boyfriend can go to more events more and I know A Tesla would be good for me to learn how to drive because my reaction times are slightly slower so I like that the auto pilot has that help keeping you in the lane thing and at what you know if you’re going to hit a car when you’re trying to switch Lane and it will be cheaper to fill up the battery le it is a gas tank and it will be less on maintenance Cost as well
Sault is pronounced “Sue” Saint Marie.
Just for grins, if I drove my old 6cyl Pathfinder on that trip, getting it's average of 17MPG, it would have cost $288! A 2010 Prius getting maybe 45MPGe would have cost $109 but might have had a tough time on those snow-and-ice roads and wouldn't have done 75MPH either. Hmmm, so trade in the Pathfinder and the Prius, get the Model Y and watch my speed is the answer, I think. Cheers.
That your efficiency went up when you slowed down tour soeed a bit, maybe could have been estimated when doing the overall trip efficiency estimations as a comparison. I’m guessing tour costs would hVe decreased. Thanks for taking the time to do this video.
I was wondering how much it cost you for this trip in super charging in total just out of curiosity because I would like to get an ideal for when I get my Tesla it will give me an idea how much it will cost on a decent and road trip for charging
Skip to the summary section at the end of the video, I discuss it there.
Way cute
cool ... yeah it look cold weather is a nightmare for EVs .. but you should report the screen problem to Tesla if you didn`t
Didn't report, as it's not consistent. But will definitely let them know
Absolutely agree. The car is super efficient at slow speeds and in the city, but much less so on the highway at speeds of 75 miles per hour. Cold temperatures make mine about 10% less efficient which is okay
How can you deermine the version of the supercharger? You said that was a V3? Thank you..
A few ways:
If you're at the SC, the V3 ones will have thinner cables, and A-D on the actual chargers. It will also show a max charge rate of 250kW if you find the charger on the built in navigation.
Another way is using the Chargeway app, all V3 chargers are 🔴7️⃣ bubbles on the map.
The car also tells you if you click on the icon for the supercharger on the map.
Why did you not precondition at hotel?
The charger was like 2 miles from the hotel. Didn't have time to precondition and didn't think I would need to charge 🙃
And COLD AIR is heavier than WARM/HOT AIR. And most folks seldom set proper PSIs in their tires when the temps drop. I set mine to 46 when COLD before taking long road trips. And s-a-u-l-t is actually pronounced "SUE" like the name. Too bad you couldn't plug into a 120V outlet overnight at the hotel. Next time look for hotels with EV charging. Waking up to a FULL charge and warm battery/car is awesome. Isn't 27 mpg the actual average used to compare vehicles by the EPA.
Good hair around 7:21
Hard to tame it sometimes!

Road trips in an EV are easy :)
aweful for long trips

‘Sault’ is pronounced ‘Sue’. Ain’t English great?
Of course it is 🤦♂️ should've looked that up beforehand
It’s French, not English.
tesla sssucc.......... ????
That’s not true Telsa or EVs are not good for long distance. My model y 2022 Did Awesome job driving long distances from West coat to East coast! No issues… Great performances up hill and down hill.
I think its your Driving habits causing you to think its not good on long trips… LOL
Dude the car is doing its Job! Stop trippin LOL or you can drive a dumb ICE car your choice Right.
I hope you watched the video, actually quite impressed with how the car held up. Definitely don't intend for this video to be a knock on the car or EVs in general. If anything this should show how much a good charging infrastructure enables trips like this!
