- Cyclo-cross as it used to be back in 1960. Riders wading through rivers throwing their bikes in before them, washing their bikes in the river at the finish, cleaning themselves in a mucky bowl of water and brewing up afterwards on a meths stove - this video has it all. The wonderful commentary is provided by Bill Baty, himself a winner of the GB National Amateur RR Champs in 1958 and 1959. The races just aren't like this any more! I particularly loved the BarnesBurY CC catering arrangements shown at 20:14.
These are perfect examples of what 'cross used to be like... love it.
Really enjoyed this video, the cometary was fantastic with his sense of humour!
I knew Wes Clayton as a time-triallist in the '70s and rode a 50km TTT with him and his brother Dennis
2020 = Gravel Event ;-) = modern retro
Great commentary by North East's Bill Baty...brilliant film
A real historical gem, thanks for posting
brilliant. top commentary as well.
Tough old roads round Shaftoe and Bolam Lake ~ very pretty too. Nice to hear of stone of the old clubs that are no longer with us, Stanley Road Club, Dunston Couriers, Newcastle Road Club.
Great footage and commentary. Hard as nails those lads!
Too right Mark. I reckon we've either gone soft or hard is an understatement!
That lad just came back from a kidney transplant.
Early example of a triathlon
That was great i live around the area that they are racing, its certainly wasn't for the faint hearted.
Health & Safety nowadays would demand that riders wear lifejackets when crossing that river !!
Tremendous!!

Reminds me of the arly days of US Cyclo cross.... this is how we were taught to ride.
Tough course! They seem to be enjoying it though.
Ditch the bikes and make it a fell running race.
Biggest change seems to me that we know how to carry our bikes; they just threw them. Also, our remounting is faster.
Charge of the Bike Brigade........
