    Excellent and meticulous assembly technique. A bicycle from a time when it still retained its essential simplicity and most components were compatible. A time when I was a bicycle mechanic and salesman.
    One detail which I can’t resist mentioning is in respect of the brake cable termination. I believe that, after exiting from the straddle wire hanger pinch bolt, the brake cable is intended to continue straight down over the straddle wire, (and not bent.off to one side), thus better trapping or retaining the straddle wire when it is released during wheel changes. The hanger has a gap specifically to accommodate the cable tail in this way, and the cable stays straight, helping to prevent fraying. Chris, Plymouth UK.

    Another great restoration, well done 👍🏼 Great to see a Cyclocross bike resto for a change as cyclocross was never big in South Africa due to our relatively hot winters throughout the country. As a result cyclocross bikes are rarely seen for sale on the secondhand market.

    As a very young guy, I drove a racing Favorite in the late sixties and early seventies. Of course not F1, but the standard one with a steel crankset and center pull Favorit brakes. We rode then and cyclo cross, we only had tubulars with plugs, Barum off course. To mount the rear wheel with such a tire, (27x32), it was necessary to push the empty tire into the drops, then inflate. I also do a bit of restoration of old steel racing bikes and I would love to have one Favorite in my collection. There is one F1 near me, but the owner wants to sell a complete bike and asks a lot for it. When I was in Prague last year, I was looking at ads and hoping to find some Favorites. There were none.

    What is the stopping power on those cantilever brakes like?

    • @OnRoadVintageBikes
      @OnRoadVintageBikes  2 роки тому +1

      The braking power is not high, but whoever brakes does not win. Compared to 1/10 disc brakes, I guess. In the wet, it does not brake at all. Thank you for watching.

    One tip you will find valuable - Before even thinking about connecting either gear cable, stroke both derailleurs through their travel by pushing them, one by one, by hand through their range of motion while pedalling the bike gently. Chain on clearly, but you can even rough in the rear limits by eye with it off. You can feel more accurately if the limit screws are out in either direction, and make adjustments- always testing full stroke between adjustments. You can check and adjust hanger straightness, if needed at this stage too. You don't throw the chain off, as you did - risking damage! I cringed watching you! When all is good , the chain freely snicks into top and bottom, but you can't push it off either end for trying.Repeatedly make sure the return spring can't drop it off the inside when you release the mech under pedalling load from low gear. Make sure all gear combos work freely. All, good? THEN you connect the cable, pull it up finger tight, tighten it up, and your cable tension is right first time! On friction, should be job done! On indexed systems- you're usually within a couple turns of the barrel adjuster of perfection. A very old Australian bike mechanic taught me this sequence when I was young. Now I'm an old Australian bike mechanic, working in Latvia. Most, if not all mechanics here don't know this either. Which shocked me. In Australia, it's bike mechanic's Mother's milk- you learn it right when you start, if you find someone willing to show you, like I was lucky to! Hope it helps make future builds, that little bit easier. Otherwise- BRAVO! Excellent work!

    Period correct pedals would have been Lyotard 460d long thread. Toe clips should be double so that when you stamp on them they spring back. Toe straps were often cut and riveted or screwed to pedal side plates, as you show them routed flat through the side plate guides the straps would retain the mud scraped from shoes on clipping, de-clipping. Rear derailleur cable should be routed around the clamp bolt and back upwards to prevent pull-through. Mafac criterium brakes should be set up with the shoes hard against the brake body, as shown they run the risk of brake shoes pushing through under heavy braking. Replace front brake hanger for a Universal hanger this gives a QR mechanism and won't bend like the Mafac version as fitted. In all my years I can honestly say the reversed front to rear cable routing was never "common cyclocross practise"! In the '60's there was a brief fashion to run the front derailleur from the right hand (hbc) lever but this would be used in conjunction with a R/H down tube lever for the rear derailleur, this was perceived to give more feel and accuracy of change through the block, it didn't last. On a technical point please don't adjust the rear mech by screwing the stop screw in (or out) against the spring tension of the mech - move the mech by hand to the required position, hold and screw in the stop screw to meet the mech body.
